How to Model Wheels & Tires Like a Career 3D Artist

  • Modeling cars and car parts in blender is one of the first things a lot of new artists want to try, but even things like wheels and tires that seem simple can be deceptively difficult. In this tutorial I will walk you through the tips and tricks I've learned in my 10 year 3D career and show you how I tackle wheel and tire modeling.
    Massive shout out to ‪@Donut‬ ‪@bigtimebigtimebigtime‬ and ‪@SpeeedCo‬ for being a big part of the reason I decided to join youtube in the first place

    Excited for the rest of the tutorials! My Sonett is rare enough that I've only been able to find 2 models of it, neither are good. So it looks like I’m doing it all myself. I’m really interested in how we make more accurate models, but I’ll save those questions for the relevant video. 👍

    8:13 You could bridge edgeloops and dissolve the inner loop to save time instead of lining up and merging vertices

    Thanks. Next time someone will post a scary story of how AI will soon replace 3D artists - I will send them a link to your video, so they can challenge Midjourney to make a decent tire.

    My advice for a faster cleaning of overlayed poligons is selecting all vertices pressing A, after that press M and select By Distance, it will be much faster👍

    4:03 id recommend making one side of spoke and mirror then array it using object offset and use an empty rotated at 60°

    Quick tip for connecting the inner section with the spokes part at 9:20. Instead of trying to line things up perfectly and using merge by distance or manually merging each vertex, just select both edges and Bridge them using Looptools.

      I realized this when I was editing 😭, I was cutting that section and was like, wait, wtf was I doing

    Hey man, nice tutorial! But what if we want to make an off-road tire that has treads on the sides as well? I would appreciate a tutorial on how to make an off-road tire.

    Amazing work. Thanks.
    Just curious why you modeled this in blender instead of cad. It's just a revolve with two cutouts in a polar array. Import as an STL.

    • @bytedozer
      @bytedozer  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      CAD is great for fast modeling but because it’s nurbs curve based the topology when converted to mesh type objects is unmanageably bad. This is the same reason film studios and commercial operations that are using the models they make primarily for digital content creation use mesh modeling rather than more cad like programs. As for why topology matters it’s important for achieving realism in shading and also for rigging

      @@bytedozer thank you for the informative response. i was under the impression that topology was better from brep models, not worse.

    I use a circle (loop tool) on the wheel and when rotating it is clear that the wheel is crooked, but without using the circle when rotating everything is perfect, who knows what the problem could be??

    • @bytedozer
      @bytedozer  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s possible your objects origin is off center, or that your scale has not been applied before using the loop tools circle thing
