@RougeDeBlah some of the tools make a difference but I've been working with capri, tekton, sunex, a ton of other brands other than snapon that are a better value that work the same with a lifetime warranty. A new tech getting into $15,000 in debt for hand tools you can get at home depot and work for years makes no sense to me.
@Dr.Squints agreed, I've worked with people who've been in the industry for decades and are still in debt over their tools. That 20 bucks a week thing is not a good deal.
36 years as a mechanic and I highly recommend certain tools be Snap-on but not all. There's some really good electrical diag stuff out there that's much more affordable, as well most pliars don't have to be off the truck. Tool boxes have gotten out of hand. I know it's top quality and with the weight and value they hold you need a good box but not $60k box. My Snapon roller cab is coming up 30 years old but was under $5k back then.
Yeah the 08 Sterling bullet aka Ram 45/5500 I used to drive actuator would give us problems. Cummins could never get a VGT turbo right it was new technology to them at that time. Guys that idle their trucks you gotta blow the cobwebs out of it. With that guys tool truck the turbo is warm the vanes are moving.
All sorts of weird stuff happens when these turbos act up. My truck with a 2017 6.7 was wanting to creep forward randomly at red lights after a lot of driving and would have to press breaks harder to keep from learching forward then truck would stall out. I was thinking it was the trans for sure. Somehow the turbo exhaust break was turning on/actuator problem but ended up having to replace entire turbo assembly to resolve after 3 actuators replacements.
8:27 Check the turbo actuator, if it's a VGT. If the actuator is healthy, then see if you can move the turbo itself. I had a Cummins with the same issue, we ended up replacing the hole turbo because the fins in the VGT were seezing up. When it got hot while running the metal would expand and cause the VGT to not VGT.
Thanks for the vid guys. Always love watching Tylor and his comments on everything! LOL As a recovering Snap-on addict, without a current dealer, it's nice to see the new shtuff they have, and any other brand with new tools out. Thank you
Enjoy all the videos you guys put out. Recently started school for Diesel Tech/Heavy Equipment mechanics. So I come to watch you guys videos and pick up what knowledge I can from watching them. Great job and keep it up.
The loadpro is good made by esitest and dan sullivan. He was an equipment trainer. His book fundamental electrical troubleshooting is excellent. There also is a combo deal for the book and load tool. Also they offer a 48vdc rated loadpro test leads.
I like the Cornwell branded pinch offs. Especially the smallest size, I have the blue point and Cornwell and the Cornwell get the most use yet still grab and hold the best.
On the plastic hose clamp pliers, take a piece of hose (like the 3/8 black hose) and put one cut length wise in the hose and then snap the hose over the pliers, one hose on each side. Thats how I use those plastic ones and it works great!
The crescent wrench’s are bacho pattern, have owned more 8” ones than I care to remember, without fail after about a year heavy use, the small screw that holds the mechanism together comes free and inevitably disappears 😂
favorite use for the thermal imager is amp draws... if you let the vehicle sit for a while on an amp draw test you can sometimes see the fuse or the relay that is drawing power!
I have a specific need to cut off a heater core line, then leave it disconnected for up to weeks at a time. The local auto parts store stocks a set of those plastic ones but in cast aluminium, and they are really good for cutting off flow, especially when I need to leave them out in the open exposed to the elements
It's the turbo actuator on the turbo, it prob doesn't set the code when its plugged in because of a temp change with the coolant before startup. Replace the turbo actuator and calibrate it
The long barrel air hammer hits harder than the new short one. Will be buying the long barrel after my short barrel would not knock out a bearing race like my coworkers long barrel
turbo is cooked man. An actuator costs $1500 + the labour to re&re. That's a bandaid solution to a problem that has existed since the conception of the holset VGT. Replace the turbo and be done with it.
Turbo actuator could be going out, there is a hysteresis test you can do on cummins insite to see if it is working properly, I would start there. the ECM fault is concerning though.
He said wiring harness or ECM? Sounds like he's still guessing 😱 That's when shop manager comes in and says, are you sure about that? Are you sure! Used one is $1000 no guarantees. Do you even have a thousand dollars!
@@JacksAutoDiagnosticsthere were 2 different fault codes. A new turbo and actuator were tossed onto it before I looked at it. And this was months ago so I forgot what I even did or looked at
First check with Ed’s or what they call it now. Is to check batteries if your having a vgt issue. Second is connects for the egr harness to main harness
Depending on the fault code either turbo, vgtactuator, or harness and actuator and software fault leads me to more to the actuator just test ohms and voltage to the vgt believe spec is 120 key off
In another video Cam said the load pro isn't for apprentices, but in this video they recommend it. Any reason anyone can think to not get one as an apprentice. As long as you don't reverse the polarity of the leads on a circuit which switches ground and not power, apprentices shouldn't have an issue.
Wow man i have never met anyone else who uses the adjustable to get bolt size i have taught so many Apprentices this trick after watching them walk back and forth guessing at sizes tape measure works to. Only us gingers are smart enough to measure bolt sizes and teach others
Yep my rep always tells it straight of who makes what for snap-on. they knew bahco make the best so they use those and make em all blinged out lol same with irwin vice-grips
Best thing for an apprentice to do. Is stay FAR away from that snap-on truck. I own lots of snap on myself and love it. But I see so many toolboxes listed on marketplace of young guys selling everything they have that look’s basically saying not a mechanic anymore just need to get rid of it. Make sure this is the career you wanna do before jumping on that truck.
There is absolutely no need to spend more than $15 on a set of hose pinch offs. Harbor freight has a set for like $10 i use everyday changing out coolant return line gaskets. Fork lift field tech. Not once have i stepped on the tool truck unless you own your own business and can write it off, there is really no need to.
Pretty sad the snap on scanner from the dealer him self can't diagnose a Cummins and no price for these tools for the apprentice stay away from snap on
There is a lot of money in this video, who in their right mind would pay 124,000 for a toolbox/work centre. I was never a snap on fan boy I’ve seen new apprentices get neck deep into debt it takes them years to pay it off. Guys in the HD world tools get destroyed the bush mechanics I’ve been around they are not sporting in the thousands to 10s of thousands in Snap on tools. The automotive guys they are a different story their tools are dry they work in a clean environment. They drop a wrench it hits the concrete floor. A bush mechanic it drops in the mud it could be gone forever. There are a lot more options out there now for tools like Olsa. It is an expensive trade to be in mechanics because you need all these expensive tools to diagnose the electrical/computer systems. Carls truck probably needs a turbocharger actuator that is a common 6.7 Cummins problem I see a lot on medium duty trucks.

Yeah vgt was the first thing I thought
I just battled very similar issue with freighliner m2 with a Cummins was the vgt. A very common fail on these engines

I had a Cummins with the same issue, we ended up replacing the hole turbo because the fins in the VGT were seezing up. EGR cooler is what causes that, to a point. As it plugs up it superheats the coolant that goes right into the VGT actuator.
