  • For my CNC router build, I used this 2.2kW Water cooled Huang Yang spindle and VFD. The installation is not so straight forward, so I put my findings here.

    These are great value. I’ve bought 2 of them over the years and they do hold up under heavy regular work.

    Wim, you're the man! I have been having my own little adventure with this VFD, trying to get it to speak to a standalone SMC5 controller. Your info about the signal wiring is what made it all work. Thank you so much!

    Am here to find a solution to wiring my HY02D223B with 2.2kw air cooled to GRBL nano... In this video at 8:16, I see ACM&DCM are joined together my question is FOR, V1 and green (ACM) wire, where do I need to connect them to my adruino nano board?...anyone with any idea...(the nano board pin out has pin D13 as spindle directions and D12 as variable spindle PMW,...are these the pins to use the ACM fitted to ground?.....been 4 days waiting for reply from bulkman 3d of queenBee Pro where I bought my 1515 router from

    Thank you for doing this video, the jumper's correct position for
    Spindle control is very helpful .
    I have purchased Huanyang model #HY01D523B & 1,5k spindle . My
    inverter looks identical to yours but may have lower valued output capacitors and so forth .
    Do you have a detailed wiring diagram for your setup ?
    I have a 3 wire single phase 220v/30a outlet to connect the vfd.
    My main concerns are
    !) type of switch to install between VFD and outlet
    2) Is a 3 pole 220v disconnect between VFD & spindle for safe manual tool change required ?
    2a) if yes , best type to use ?
    3)Grounding VFD ,Spindle.
    A complete how to video for 220v wiring is what I have found to be lacking with VFD how to setup videos .
    Almost all cover power at the VFD only and skip the input voltage hot to from the outlet .

      Hello Angus,
      Nice to hear that this video is helpfull.
      Unfortunately, I didn't make the wiring diagram. I should have done this though. You can find a wiring diagram here if you register: cnczone.nl/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=7881&start=406 Unfortunately it is in Dutch.
      1) A 16 amp double pole switch is sufficient for this. You can see my switch in the opening scene. This one is a bit overkill, but it was for free. I also have a breaker right after the switch. I have more information in this video: th-cam.com/video/NkCVyd0bgik/w-d-xo.html
      2) No.
      3) I believe I used a shielded cable with a ground and grounded the shield only on the VFD side and used the grounding wire to ground the Spindle.
      I hope this helps as well.

    Is this spindle overkill for just milling wood? Should I go for the 1.5kW?

    • @WimsMill
      @WimsMill  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends. I use a surfacing bit of 60mm diameter: www.cmtorangetools.com/eu-en/router-cutters-chucks-for-cnc/spoilboard-surfacing-router-cutters-with-insert-knives-2
      I can do approximately to 1.2mm step downs a bit more on softer wood. If I do more, it really starts to struggle. This bit can make quick work of flattening a piece of wood. Depending on your routable size, I would consider the 2.2kW.

    • @matiasgoinheix366
      @matiasgoinheix366 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WimsMill That's one awesome bit. The largest bit I have is a 25mm surfacing bit because I mostly work with panels (plywood, finger jointed, MDF), would you say that for cutting, slotting, pockets and carving, the 1.5 is enough?

    • @WimsMill
      @WimsMill  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@matiasgoinheix366 In that case 1.5kw will suffice. It is smaller and lighter, which is better for smaller machines. The 1.5kW also uses smaller collets (ER16) which can go to 10mm. Some of the more powerful bits in woodworking come with 12mm bits. For that, the 2.2kW will be needed. The price difference is not that much, so for that I wouldn't take the 1.5kW.

    • @matiasgoinheix366
      @matiasgoinheix366 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WimsMill Thank you very much, my machine is 1.5m long by 1m wide. I noticed the price difference isn't big, I might go for the 2.2kW. Thank you for the replies and the video (will be of much help when installing), I think I'll go for the same brand you have here, seems to be the most common on ebay.
      Alternatively there is one fairly priced at steppermotoronline, I'll have to do some digging.
      Thanks!

    Is 2.2kw better or 1.5kw for aluminum milling work?

    • @WimsMill
      @WimsMill  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Depends on your milling work. More power can take bigger cut. But I think I never overloaded it except when making a mistake and plunging at full speed into the material ...

    Hi. what was your pin layout for the spindle to connect to the vfd

    • @WimsMill
      @WimsMill  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      pin 1,2,3 are the phases on the spindle. These should be connected to R,S,T on the VFD. If it runs the wrong way, just switch 2 phases on the VFD.

    You need minimum 14 gauge wire for your spindle. That wire you used looked way too thin for a three phase 2.2kw spindle. You also did not explain where you plugged the controls into on the other end at the controller.

    • @WimsMill
      @WimsMill  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well here that is perfectly alright. The wire I used are plenty thick enough. I used 1mm² wires. I would even use these wires to run 2.2kw on 2 phase. Then again, we can get away with half the cross-section wires for nearly everything. That's the big advantage of running 240V and 400V 3 phase for the power-hungry tools ;-).
      And no, I didn't explain the controller side. Mainly because everyone has a different controllerboard. There are only u few things that come from there: a run signal, a spindle speed reference and a spindle speed voltage.
