    I am a 68 year old teenager and I am new to all of this. I am presently getting ready to buy a 2018 TI. Your video was very impressive and more helpful than anything I have seen on TH-cam.
    Thank you VERY MUCH for your efforts.

      Your right Monte, I have. Still this design served me well and is a good way to add a jib.. I now have two hobie spinnaker sniffing bags one on each side. One side houses the spinnaker and the other, the jib. I use the spinnaker rigging to raise both sails. Its facilitates use of two sails without over complicating the rigging. Will be changing out the spinnaker for a code 0 type Genoa this month. We'll see how that works out. Maybe I'll get around to another update video soon.

    Great videos; love your work! At age 73 I've purchased a 2007 AI and getting ready to get wet. I blame you for that!

    wow this video was so in depth. thank you so much for the jib guidance. I have been having issues turning my TI to the left like it seems the rudder dosnt travel as far to the left as it does right. I replaced the rudder pin and I'm at a loss of what to do next. I'm taking it from pensacola to key west so I need everything to work at 100%

      Thanks for the kind comments. The issue with truning may be due to your rudder lines being too tight or not tight enough. This is easy to fix by loosening the screws on top of the rudder and adjust the tension of the turning lines.

      +Greg Matt thanks I was getting frustrated not being able to 1. see what I was doing. 2. I was just feeling around for lines. but I'll try that today thank you. I deffently suscribed. have a good day sir.

    Looks like your are in Houston? I'm up in Round Rock, and I've been using Hobie fishing kayaks for about 3 years and my father-in-law just gifted me his AI (2008). I'm now in the market for another AI and will most likely off-load my Revo13 and PA14 and even custom trailer. Great video, the voice-over was done well as you explain things very good. I bet that TI AMA upgrade is pricey, but I like that idea. These AIs, pre 2015, get really wet, much less than 2015+ since they increased the hull and AMA displacement. I like your roll bar and quarter deck setup, but I have ask, isn't your main sheet geometry affected where the clue is constricted to that area of the boat (w/in that roll bar)? My father-in-law has a barber hauler setup where I know this wouldn't work. I'd like to know the pros and cons and power add differences between the barber hauler, jib, and spinnaker. From there I would probably chose just one. If you are still in Houston let me know, I head down to Pearland where my folks live at least 6 times a year. Would be nice to meet you. Thank you.

      Hi Roy. It been a number of years since this video and I have changed a few things. I purchased the Hobie Spinnaker system and created a way to deploy the jib on one side and the spinnaker from the other. Over time i simplified the boat by getting rid of the spinnaker all together and deploying the jib using the spinnakers snuffing bag and rigging. I find the jib to be more versatile. The jib adds about .5 to 1 mph of speed in general. Not a huge amount but you feel it. I later added a barber haulers for the jib clue (not in this video) that allows me to tension and shape the jib better, providing more power. The sheet angle is about 7-8 degrees. When your in Houston, give me a call and I'll show you how things look on the boat now.

      @@gregrobinmatt Yes sir, I'll try to give you a heads up. I'm most interested in the seat cushion implementation for now. I understand/see how you keep the back cushion captive, but how are you keeping the bottom cushion captive? I've got two AI's now, a 2008 (has a different Attwood seat mod) and a 2013 like yours with the stock sit-in seat. I think for now I will try your modification if I can find those orange seat cushions at Academy. Here's the 08 seat mod, pretty slick: th-cam.com/video/LDhqA-SGk0Q/w-d-xo.html

      @@motleypixel The Attwood seat mod looks nice and comfortable. I sold my 2012 a while back and bought a 2015. When I had it, I use bungie cords around the PVC brace to hold the back cushions in place, That seat arraignment was more comfortable for me than the current post 2015 seats. Could not use it in the 2015s as the fit was different between the years.

      @@gregrobinmatt Took my son out with our two AI's (he's in the same AI you have) and really the biggest beef he had was the seat. For him the back kept falling back (straps would loosen on their own). I'm trying to get a good enough still from your video at 27:42 I want to crank one of these bars out before Thursday. There's a community called paddling anglers in canoes and kayaks (PACK-TX) and there's another BTB taking place at beach marker 80 Mustang Island to head out to the Mayan Princess rigs this Thursday. I'm heading to my local Academy at lunch today (they have 3 of those cushions in stock). I would like to ask if I could connect with you remotely, maybe get a good picture of all the tees/unions etc. of the 1 1/4" PVC you are using. You can reach me via my YT name with a . (dot) between my first and last name followed by gmail's domain suffix of course the the @ sign. I still can't seem to see how you affix the lower/bottom cushion as well. How do you keep it in place? Thank you.

    First off I want to thank you for your informative videos. I have been watching them for a time now and really like some of the projects you have implemented into you boat.
    Your past projects have left me with a lot of question in the past, and this one really gave step by step instructions on how to. I'm thinking on trying almost all these on my AI but still have a question or three. First I'm a little worried about the extra force on the mainsail. wont I need to add tension lines ? But most of all, I bought a 07 Hobie with a 09 ama kit added to it. so I'm stuck with the old twist a stow rudder system, I have found that this system has a great fault in high wind situations.
    Anyway sorry for the long comment, just wanted to give a big thumbs up for your ideas.
    Might have to sell this one and upgrade HA HA. I'm sailing this weekend all over San Diego bay, love this area
    Thanks again.

      +mark taylor Thanks for the kind words Mark. I have not had any issues with the extra forces on the mast. My boat is a 2012 though. I thought all twist and stows had the ability to upgrade to the new rudder. Not so? The 2015's are nice but I don't want to give up my seating options because the new seat is not as comfortable or versatile. Also don't want that extra weight since I car top. Still I would always welcome more sail.
      I did not find that the jib altered my steering at all so if you can sail fine with the twist and stow you can probably add a jib in this arraignment. If it doesn't work out you at least have a jib and hardware ready to go when you do upgrade. Feel free to contact me if you have any issues with your modifications.

    Vetgam, Great videos and explanations. I was offshore last weekend in my 2015 TI with light winds and needed some extra sailpower. I watched your video with great interest and want to add a jibl. Can you supply the dimensions? Is your mast 19 feet?
    Thanks,
    Scott Oxenhandler

    • @gregrobinmatt
      @gregrobinmatt  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Scott Oxenhandler Scott, the dimensions are Foot 51in, Luff 133in, Leech 117in. You will want a bigger sail for a TI. You mast is taller on a TI than my AI so your ideal dimensions way be different. Proportionally the fore-deck on a TI is different (smaller) than an AI and a jib may need to be designed differently or may not even work well. I went to a sail maker called Banks Sails in Kemah Texas where they designed the proper jib for my AI based on measurements they asked for. They said they would do the same for anyone, anywhere in the world. Just contact them and they can help you with the project.

      Thanks, for the dimensions. I've seen other TI with it so will probably work. Will use the trial and error method, avoid invasion of hull with everything removable. Worst scenario I'll be out a few hundred dolloars (? tank of gas in a regular boat). I will speak with Banks Sails. I am going to try to build on your design. Everything as yours and make it so the jib also furls. Then once furled, it will also get pulled into the mainsail furling event in both the jib un-furled (like yours) and jib furled states. This will give even more flexibility in higher wind conditions by allowing me to keep the jib up but furled. ie: won't have to remove the jib sail as you demonstrate. This is harder to do in TI b/c I like to fish in back seat (made a great rollbar mainsail line riser uyedabrothers.com/files/40634ba77b1ff7258a294abbd08b020a-47.html ) Not sure if jib idea will work, but that's the idea. Will keep half halyard idea, but might get into too many ropes etc. I envision one extra dedicated jib furling line. In jib furled state, when getting ready to furl mainsail, will have to figure out how to preserve clew line to mainsail proper distance so jib gets pulled in. Gathering materials now and will send videos as it comes together. Thanks, Scott

    Great info thanks. Why not just go with ss hardware install on shear bolts and ama safety lines?

    • @gregmatt5373
      @gregmatt5373 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have to be careful when using stainless steal hardware instead of the plastic Hobie bolts. The plastic is sacrificial and prevents expensive damage to the boat if you hit something. The lines flex and do not create a problem yet do their job of protecting the plastic bolts and help to prevent capsizes.

    This jib arrangement is really spectacular. It appears to be bit complex. Does the manufacturer of the sail by any chance have detailed rigging instructions? Thanks for a detailed and very thoughtful resource for the Island series.

    • @gregrobinmatt
      @gregrobinmatt  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Chip SOUTHERLAND
      Hi Chip. The manufacture only made the sail (jib). They did not do the rigging or supply the hardware. Everything I can think to offer up is in this video. Let me know if you have specific questions about the rigging and I will be sure to answer them. I can take a picture and provide a link to it of anything that is unclear. It's much easier to do than I had expected.

    • @gregmattdvm
      @gregmattdvm 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No they don't unfortunately. The rigging we just have to do ourselves. I was intimated at first but it was all that difficult. Just have jump in and go for it. Well worth it.

    How much does the jib improve pointing ability?

    • @gregrobinmatt
      @gregrobinmatt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your pointing ability will actually suffer a few degrees while you gain about a 1/2 mph speed. It's a trade off.

    Best video on the AI. I'm in the process of setting up a jib based on your method. Hobie has warned me against it because apparently they conducted trials with jib and the yak has an inherent weakness on the bow around the hatch; yet they have a spinnaker which is huge in comparison. Have you experienced any issues with your set up? I won't be installing the jib traveller, using instead only the clew line to the lower mast. Do you think that'll be good enough? Cheers again from Aussie.

    • @gregmatt5373
      @gregmatt5373 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I understand that Hobie has to say that but the forces of the spinnaker are greater than the jib. I have sailed with jibs for years now and without a problem. It is an added force that I take responsibility for if I break my boat. But I don't worry about that anymore. Play it safe by keeping the jib small and don't go larger than 110%. Although this setup works well, I changed to using a Hobie spinnaker bag on both sides of the boat. One holds the spinniker on one the jib. I use quick releases on the sheets and lines going to the clew, tack and head of the sails allowing me to switch between them. I get more power with the current setup because I can maximize the angle and tension at the clew.
