I was there both days! First and only shows I was lucky enough to see! It was completely out of this world! I've never experienced anything like it before or since. Changed my life forever and I still think about it everyday! Was just seaching the date today and stumbled on this and I am so grateful. This show is a part of my history and a part of who I am today! Forever Grateful Dead!
One my all time favorite shows! Being there was rough thanks to record 100+ heat. Hard to concentrate on the music when you're practically passing out. It was when I got the board and listened to it in a/c that I realized what a phenomenal show I had attended. This Help-Slip is raging! Ive listened to it several hundred times!
This is one that brings me to tears. These were GOOD TIMES 😂. And how I miss Jerry and Brent, the fellowship of all my Brothers and Sisters. Let us not forget about the absolute SMOKIN HOT SHOWS.
Did you or anyone you know attend The Dust Bowl at Alpine 88? It was obscenely hot for all 5 days (4 shows with an off day in the middle). Thank God we had a nice hotel, would have been doomed otherwise. I felt sorry for the 25,000+ that camped in the lot.
This show is f’ing amazing!! Nice recording!! I love it. Wish I was there. Didn’t get out west too many times only for a dozen or so. First time I had heard this one. Love it!!! Phil is pounding the bass the whole damn show
30 years after this show, I'm still grieving the loss of Brent Myland, because it was the last time that I saw him alive. The live music era after him was never the same.
condor5150 I do believe you're right, wasn't the same but still wonderful shows to see, I get ya though, I'm a Brent guy too brother. He brought so much, a true cat right? But I loved all of of it.
Lol. What a fool I was. This show was the only time I caught a glimpse of the band and crowd from the parking lot good times. Probably could have seen them ten times if I had been hip. Now, it's my shit. It is better to be late than to never have been. A show a day is keeping me sane. Thanks okie
My very first show! Totally awesome! Phil was playing really good and loud and blew out a speaker. Or maybe I was tripping. Great show. Thank you for posting
Yes the 🐻 Bear... Miss him.. tripping nicely Gooney bird doses and thoroughly enjoyed the day !!!💥A Very 🔥 Hot 🥵 day!! But we had a wonderful time there and really enjoyed it 😎😁🍺🍺🎶🎵✨👍🛩️🛩️👍💥🍄🍄
This weekend was legendary. I took way too many shrooms on the 5th & never forgave myself. By Slipknot! I was someplace else altogether. Singing ever single word passionately, but not retaining the memories. I made sure I didn't make the same mistake on 7-12-90. Just one hit of clean acid and I caught Brent's last Dark Star blissed out on every note.
@@DennisCampbell777 This entire first set is played at the highest level. They lost some steam in the second set, probably from the Vegas like heat. This is my go to first set when i need my mind blown! 👵💀🌷
@@staggerlee4979 3/19/90 is my go to first set and like you mentioned about Vegas, set 2 that night didn't have the sizzle of set 1. Probably smoked a huge pile of hash at the break.

I was at both shows (5th@6th) Hotter than I liked. I was in the water line 3feet from the water for a half an hour but I never made it to the front. Water was more available in the sixth. I was peaaking on some good liquid (got puddled), and the space-drums was sooo profound. Sounded like it was taking off in a UFO. Awesome show!!
I have come to the same conclusion! All my great memories started in 84 when I got on the bus & lead up to this show. After this show, up to 95 felt more like reminiscing the days that had come before.
Great Cinco de Mayo shows. Saw Tim Leary & Terrence McKenna hanging out by the side of the stage. Perfect SoCal weather for these shows on a soccer field. Got to record both Audience & FM Broadcasts in the Taping section. Had just bought a pair of used Nakamichi CM300 mics & these were the first shows I got to use them to record.
Greatful for the Dead, Greatful for all the good people, Greatful for life, Greatful for the person reading this, Greatful for the love of God, Greatful.
I remember waiting in line at the back of the venue for a sip from the water fountain. There was a long line and it was hot. All these people were coming out of this fenced area with huge glasses of ice water and they were all laughing at us because we were in line. “There are sprinklers and ice water back there, don’t wait in line!” A lot of us were waiting for a long time and we’re reluctant to get out of line. I was super high and skeptical of this water utopia, so were all the people around me. So we waited and watched these laughing freaks with these huge glasses of ice water. Finally I broke with the line and went for it. “Don’t go, it’s a clown trap!” I felt so ashamed to leave my line, I was so high. But there was, indeed, a water park utopia just out of view from the line and it was sparsely populated with the freaks who knew better. The looks on the faces of my line companions as I walked past with my fucking giant glasses of ice water is etched in my memory bank forever.
Recorded this on the radio since KPFK was broadcasting it and I got to avoid the heat. Sunday was hot, but much nicer, except for the person who died on the way home, the second time in 3 LA shows that a Deadhead died (also on 12-10-89), further souring the band on playing SoCal.
The band didnt sour on So Cal...So Cal soured on the band. Unruliness caused by the Touch Effects...gate crashing, public indecency...nitrous tanks...pissing and sleeping on people's lawns...open drug use in residential neighborhoods, panhandling. You name it. By 1990, the Dead were banned from every So Cal venue except the LA and SD sports arenas and a run down college soccer stadium that didnt invite them back. No more Ventura or Irvine. No more Greek or Frost. Shoreline was the only ampitheater.that would still have us because Bill Graham owned it. BUT THE BAND KEPT PLAYIN ON! 💀🌷✌
I went to that show. Problem was the authorities treated the Deadheads as the Enemy. Who would want to go back to Carson and deal with the black helicopters flying overhead after the show. Top it off, Carson is one of the worst areas for crime and all that in all of Los Angeles. It is fine for locals but not for visitors. Good riddance. Never want to go back there again.
@@davidsteven5007 The slums were the only So Cal neighborhoods that would have the Dead by 90. After this show, the Dead were limited to the Sports Arena in South Central LA where USC students can't leave campus without fearing for their lives. The Dead were banned from the beautiful residential cities of Irvine and Ventura thanks to the Dead's MTV money grab. Even the Forum in seedy Inglewood didn't want the Dead after two separate three show runs in 89.
Okie... the cover art reads like an ad, "don't dance while flying kids". Plus the colors are messing around with my head, but i can't stop looking at it yet... Don't want to look, but i do. Don't look... runaway!!!
Selling balloons in parking lot, I see Bill Graham coming towards my tank from the back of my line, saw him all weekend on his fat tire motorcycle, I turn and walk a couple cars away, he asks whose tank, no one replies, he opens tank and empties gas. I stand and watch, he leaves by pushing his motorcycle away. Next day I go to lobby of big hotel nearby to ask if anyone needs ride back east, hippy stranger say he needs ride to NYC, I take him and his dog across the country, he tells me a story , says he was in line at a nitrous tank in lot, Bill Graham emptied the tank, he didn't get his balloon, he was mad so he took the keys out of Bill Graham's motorcycle. There were probably 50,000 people at those shows.
It was the only sloppy performance of the show. They probably didnt even run it through a soundcheck to work out the kinks. Help-Slip-Franklins made up for it.
