Like outriders and exercise riders, assistant starters are the unsung heroes of horse racing. What an important and dangerous job they do! They deserve a lot of public respect and recognition. Greetings from a venezuelan citizen who emigrated to Chile searching a better way of life.
Enjoyed it very much! ! Horse Racing is a family, you look out for each other. The gate is such an important position. Love that you are sharing how dedicated the gate crew is, and also the danger involved. I've been involved since, 1940 when I was 3. One of the best things that ever happened to me!!
Exhilarating job.unsung heroes... every job at the track is important and dangerous....but we love the sport of kings...this is what it's all about.,🏇🏇🏇
Good question. Most racetracks it is mandatory to wear helmets. But not all tracks. At Hastings racecourse most f the gate crew does wear helmets do. Thanks again god q
@@SportofKingsTV In all racetracks it should be mandatory for starting gate crew to wear helmets. Just imagine a horse kick on a human head! God always protects his children but we must also do our part. Greetings from Venezuela.
Schooling the horses helps. Go man go flipped in the gates. I bought a granddaughter from him. My mare loved to rear up and stand there. Some things passed on generation to generation.
KC M. There are some women that do work at the gate but not a lot, kind of like jockeys, there are more male's cause its still consider a male sport but female are slowly getting into it. There are more female pony riders then jockeys or gate crew worker. Females are just as strong as men just have to prove it.

The key to the race is that start at the gate..can determine every thing in a race.

How do they actually hold the horses halter in the gate? Do they have a shank hooked up or by hand?
Why in the USA don't the starting gate crews wear protective headgear like everywhere else?

Actually the person on the horse has the most dangerous job.

My friend Jay Slender.
If I was a Starter, My first job would be to take all their sunglasses away from them. Why would they trust you when they can't see your Eyes ?!?
no one is looking at those assistants' eyes, they are all looking down the track - besides, being out there in the sun they may need the protection
Dana Fenn exactly Dana. Eyes are a lot to a horse. How do people not see this?
Hahaha! No sunglasses! They have to be able to gaze deeply into your eyes! You obviously have vast experience whit horses. Lol!😍🐴😂😂😂😂😂👎
So you would rather the starters were blinded by the sun and couldn't see what the horses are doing? That would be really safe wouldn't it.
Nothing like the sound of the gates slamming open. Look at my channel to see how we do it out bush in Australia. Yes we are all crazy....
do you have any women that work at the gate?
