For the colorists, Corbin would upload his inks with a grey tone layer and a lighten layer in built wherever he had specific ideas for anatomy or effects rendering (pretty much every page.) So a lot of the dimensionality in the color was in the tones he delivered. Flatted some of Corben's Marvel and Dark Horse work and it was always a learning experience.

The colorists of these comics, Studio F, was composed at that time by Francisco Ruiz Velazco (mostly known for Battlegods from Wildstorm, and also worked for Guillermo del Toro on some pre-productions); Raúl Treviño (who published several comics like Magic Soda Pop, Live Forever, Tinkers of the Wasteland, Sombra), and Edgar Delgado (a veteran colorist for Marvel from the last 20 years); the three were based originally on Monterrey, Mexico, but parted ways on the mid-2000 to work independently. I believe Velazco lives in LA, Trevño is based in Japan, and Delgado lives in Southern Mexico region. Loved this video ✌️

Studio F was a mexican colorist studio. Former members include: Edgar Delgado (he usually colors Humberto Ramos), Edgar Clement (mexican Comic book author) and Marte Gracia (he usually colors Pepe Larraz and Stuart Immonen)

Great tribute to the GREAT Richard Corben. I was exposed to his art back in the 1970s when I was a teenager. Oh wow, I was shocked to find out that he passed away back in 2020. I always love his dark, gaunt, lean morbid artistic style. He will truly be missed by this fan.

It was devastating. I was very thrilled by Murky World and it broke my heart when his wife's posted on Facebook; saying that he always was very mindfull with his deadlines and deliveries. He was very passionate about his last run being on time.

Corben's artwork is so beautiful and ugly at the same time it's almost sublime!
    I loved this book!

"What could have been." Well said. I enjoyed these books and I was thrilled to see Richard Corben draw my favorite character at the time. Unfortunately, they didn't go over well with the readership and that ended the experimental direction. That's when I began to realize my taste in art and writing no longer aligned with the general audiences on these books. That's why I stopped reading most mainstream comics...

This is my absolute favorite Hulk comic and my introduction to Richard Corben when I was in middle school.
This book was so unlike anything else Marvel put out I thought that he was a new artist at the time.

There was an Ennis/Corben one-shot called Punisher - The End that came out a few years after this. The Corben artwork was phenomenal and very fitting for the apocalyptic setting of this book.

«The audience is a bunch of goofballs, and that is the reason why we've got to have this channel, to have like-minded people sharing this and to hip some people to cool stuff». Perfect :)

So true, so sad. I'm so fucking bored with 99% of the bullshit the big 2 put out and it pains me to see how in that era they were taking so many chances, were taking so many risks and can't help but wonder what would've happened if that had been given the opportunity to continue.

This is one of the best comics Marvel has ever released. I wish I could get the trade now. Corben is a true master and he will be missed.

The art may feel overblown, but the facial expressions are really subtle at times, especially in a genre where the main choice made in drawing faces is usually just whether the mouth is open or closed. Corben really shows us what's going on inside the characters' heads.

I've been watching the vids. I know I'm a bit late to the party, but it's really cool to see you guys covering with work with such reverence. That Corben was really something else. Just amazing stuff.

Thank you guys for delivering more Richard Corben! It almost seems like the 'woke' era Heavy Metal staff have dismissed anything Corben...so it's great to see the real fans pay tribute!!!

  • @gabrieljimenez9762

Goddam if this isn't a masterpiece. Sadly I was not aware of Corben's genius when this came out. I picked this book up a few years later and was enthralled by the art. The Hulk scenes were fantastic, but the people, their faces, the mood, the creepiness, that was sublime. This is the best Doc Samson I've ever read. Very smart, very brutal, super cool.
I read this and the Edgar Allan Poe books from Marvel around the same time and it cemented Corben as one of my favorites.

I remember being so excited to see Corben’s art dropping in mainstream comics like Luke Cage, Banner, Punisher and even CONAN THE BARBARIAN!! I guess all good things do come to an end. RIP.

I think its pretty interesting that Corben decided not to do the classic Kirby's Hulk flat head. Not that there's something wrong with Kirby's original design, but there's something very bold about going in other direction. That's the word I think it would apply to Corben's whole ouvre: bold.

my brother had this issues back in the early 2000s and that panel of Hulk holding the gun is one of my early memories as a kid.
some years ago i finally could read it and got impact for both the tone and the ending.

I had never heard of Corben, but im glad i do now, i love his stuff. You're right on about it being free, its like every image is an inbetween still in animation, like he never draws key frames. His panel layouts, angles, and expressions are fantastic and unique and really set an atmosphere and tone to his stories. Thanks for the introduction boys

I remember seeing this on the shelves when some of this came out, but the concept for a Corben book was the adaptation of William Hope Hodgson's "House on the Borderlands" is what really stuck out for me.
The X-Factor psychiatrist issue was amazingly well done, but what disappointed me was that Quesada was unable to do much more on that run.

The early 2000s marvel comics era was full of interesting and solid gems man. I remember growing up as a kid reading bendis’s ultimate Spider-Man, daredevil and new avengers, reading Bruce Jones hulk run, morrison on new X-men, Ennis on punisher, just seeing marvel being experimental and on fire creatively, which really pushed marvel toward and set the stage for what would become their cinematic success. Because so much of that stuff influenced a lot of their stuff going forward. But the comics of that period was just always captivating and street level aside from cosmic.

Artwork owes nothing to reality Corben knows this from his schooling at the Kansas City Art Institute, an elite art school. And, in comics the "narrative space and logics" are, first and foremost, about expressive reading of images. You can and should only follow the "rule" of what communicates and feels right!

Scott Dunbier approached Corben a while back about doing an Artist’s Edition of his work, but unfortunately he was uninterested. I expect his estate will respect his wishes on that matter but who knows.
The closest we are going to get to an AE is the Anguoleme Exhibition Catalog- which sold out at the exhibition and is now exorbitantly expensive.

I know you dismissed it at the beginning, but god DAMN this just validates why I hate digital coloring. Either flat colors on newsprint or painted artwork done by the artist themselves is the only way to go. Digital coloring by another artist is just asking for WAY too much interpretation and often just fights with the original art. Plus it mutes everything. Nothing jumps off the page or the cover any more.
