  • Marine viruses are the dark matter of the world's oceans. We know more about deep space than we do of the viruses we share Planet Earth with. Together, let's unlock the secrets of this microscopic world that undoubtedly holds great potential for discovery.
Karen Weynberg is a Postdoctoral Researcher based in Townsville, Queensland, specialising in marine virology with 12 years’ experience researching viruses in the oceans. Karen was awarded a PhD from the University of Warwick, U.K., in 2009, for which she researched viruses that infect tiny oceanic plants called phytoplankton. In 2011, Karen joined the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) in Townsville, as an Australian Research Council Super Science Fellow. Her research has begun to reveal the roles viruses play in coral health, coral bleaching and the adaptation of corals to climate change. Karen is the proud mum of three amazing teenage children and enjoys exploring Far North Queensland with them, when she isn’t pursuing her passion for viruses on the Great Barrier Reef.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

It's sort of a side note, but the professor for the introductory chemistry course I took in 1973 at Purdue was Frank Fong.who was completing his groundbreaking paper Molecular Basis for Photosynthetic Process at the time. Every time I hear a lecture in which photosynthesis plays a part I remember Dr. Fong's class.

Question? How do lowered sea levels impact the marine viruses? Would sea viruses mutate and start killing good bacteria?

Probably not since they already kill good bacteria :) That's what she means by 'recycling material', so when you have dead ("good" or "bad") bacteria, the others can multiply, as well as continuing they cell processes like photosynthesis using their dead comrades materials.

ALLAH is the creator of everything. We have to return to him. Islam is the only religion which will be accepted on the day of judgment. Remove music girls, Follow Islam and earn jannah
