Nice vid, thanks! As an LP user, however, I am a bit surprised how general your approach towards 'funny rubbers' was. One of the first thing they teach for an LP (modern) defender is how to play push-to-push with long pips and how to create backspin in your own shot, which is much more difficult than create a dead ball instead. The difference in the two is the amount of brush by increasing acceleration of the wrist and amplitude of the total swing. And you need soft bendy pips on a soft-ish sponge. But then the magic happens: suddenly there is no spin reversal that is commanded by your opponent, but only spin reversal that you yourself may choose to create or not. Similarly, you control the amount of reversal on your chop, as well as the block. Players like Masato Shiono were experts at this. So I suggest you create a 'Part 2' follow up now :)

MY GOD. I thought I was the only one to realize that you could create topspin/underspin/no spin with LP when your opponent gives you underspin. Don't know it is common knowledge. [sosad][sosad][sosad][sosad]. BTW, besides the two factors (the amount of brush and amplitude of the swing), I find that the angle of the blade makes a difference as well.

    • @PechPongTT
      @PechPongTT  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

@@egghead1969 a chopper was telling me that to create backspin with Pips on chops you actually use the side of the pimple (hence the need for soft bendy pips) which is where the grip is (side of the pimple rather than the top) he was2600 chopper btw

    • @assa1975

@@egghead1969 Absolutely! The 'brush' term is an umbrella cover - it includes the angle of the blade. If the ball enters the rubber at the wrong (read 'direct') angle, the won't be any brush and won't be any own imparted spin. There is a Japanese class on this topic with Shiono here: th-cam.com/video/3SbO5I2bYLs/w-d-xo.html
Even if you don't speak Japanese (I don't!!) it's quite clear what they are explaining there.

@@PechPongTT True, like LP's chop blocking. It also creates the ball wobbliness because of the pip bending and straightening movements. As @assa1975 mentioned, it is all on the brush and swing.

Great video as always. These are solid tips and I'm hoping I can apply them next time I play a pips or an anti player. When I first started playing against them, I hated it because I didn't understand the ball. Nowadays, I've grown to love playing against them because it disciplines my mind to actually watch the ball and the spin on it and not to just instinctually swing at it. And playing against them has actually improved my game against inverted players to when it comes to reading spin on serves.😊

25 minutes of a Pech Pong video is like attending a Masterclass on Table Tennis with some Star Wars cutscenes thrown in :D One of the few channels on TH-cam that provides such deep insight on gameplay and strategy. The inclusion of a 'Long Pips' player strategy (Thanks to your Dad) makes this video even more compelling as it always helps to understand the strategic game play of a LP player as in a competition, they are not going to keep on letting you play your push & loops until you win your point.

Awesome video, I have to commend the quality you put into these! The editing is top notch and your work is noticed.
For me the biggest learning was, when I had the chance to play against anti/pimples for a longer time in a couple training sessions. In beginner/amateur level table tennis, their biggest advantage is the rarity. You played for a couple of years against inverted rubber and learned the spin, suddenly everything you learned is different, if not the complete opposite. That's very frustrating and hard to think yourself out of.
So getting real life experience against this style of rubber is fundamental. The experience combined with your tips and explanations here, should get anyone ready for the next game. It can actually become fun, to play against them. As an attacker, is kinda playing cat and mouse. You wait for your trap to catch them and then you finish it.

Awesome Seth. Amazing depth and great insights. May be if you think of a follow up then you can talk about two different anti playing styles. One which sticks close to the table and sends the ball fast and low. Ex: Manika batra and the second style would be more classical defense chopper style. How to strategize against these styles. Also, (sorry i am being greedy) what do I get back if long pips side swipes the ball? So essentially the question would be how to attack a skidding long deep push vs a heavy backspin one.

For anyone watching this video, it is nicely done as it explains the BASICS on how to play with both types of rubbers ! Dead on the spot. I was an inverted player that after a bike accident had to switch to Medium pimples. I became an Anti player and shown how to play with an Anti master !
So ... just to add, all the mistakes usually made by both players have been highlighted ! But this is just the beginning.
Two other technically hard strokes to be made by each type of player are:
    by the anti:
    - create a flat kill with the anti (not swipe as this is super hard). The flat kill is almost like an BH inverted flip, but needs lots of practice and a soft Anti top sheet. Basically if you have a hard top you are just doing spin reversal, with a soft top you can alternate both. It's like magic and not really known by most Anti players.
    by the inverted player:
    - push long&higher than usual "no-spin balls" to the BH of the anti (details on how to execute this shot are not easy to describe but better viewed). Normally older players are not able to pivot to kill and it's very hard from them to judge on much timing they need to go around the ball. These balls are not easy to flat kill because they are dead with no spin!! The result is sometimes a bad push which will give you an attack ball.
Overall well done and I know how hard it is to explain all those shots. You have also nailed it on the topic of "using your brain" ... I find it silly when players say that this is not "table tennis" - when it's EXACTLY what it is !!! I find it ironic that in Tennis when someone created a racket which created more spin on the ball which could not be controlled, they made it illegal, hahahaha
Kudos to you and your dad to come up with this video ! If your father is interested I can send him a video of how my racket top sheet looks like. BTW I restarted to play with medium pimples as they have created really nice ones these days.
Ooops forgot to add... the Starwars clips are PRICELESS !!!!

    Great information, Seth.
Zhou Xintong uses LP beautifully. She retired from the Chinese team in 2018, I believe. She uses LP (Dawei 388d1 .05 sponge) like an inverted.
I play cpen with inverted on FH and LP on BH (twiddle).
Backspin is what I like to receive because you can punch it pretty hard with LP.
What I hate to receive is fast, no spin serves. If I am not aware and absorb some of the power, the ball will fly off the table or to the net.

Great video Seth!! I find anti particularly difficult against the Seemiller style where the opponent primarily blocks with regular rubber then randomly (or maybe strategically?) throws in one or two anti shots. It's so disruptive and easy to mess up, but I have some better ideas on how to handle those shots! Thanks for all your hard work man!

the biggest problem for me is not that i dont know how i have to play but rather the muscle memorie i have to surpress and overcome. The sport is so fast that i often cant handle to calculate the spin properly and then correctly adapt my kinetic chain in time. Its also the footwork with changes in pace and so on. And a lot of my strengh comes from very good, spinny and creative serves but most of them are useless against anti/SP player which at the same time make the game boring for me.

    • @PechPongTT

Great video, because of this I already beat this season long pips player and anti player that I would have probably lost to otherwise. But I have question, can you make something similar for short pips? I play this offensive guy in our club and it's always I hit one good shot and the next one goes to the net. It confuses me that he made same movement and I have to play something different.

    • @PechPongTT

  • @XYoukaiX
    @XYoukaiX 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yeah I hated playing against pips and Anti for a long time even though I did play Anti for about 4 years myself ^^V
Nowadays I am kinda happy as "most" people especially in the lover classes only use either of it because they need something to cover for their bad technique on their (mostly) backhand.
That loop and push changing back and forth is probably the easiest way but for a while now I usually don't stop attacking with topspin at all .... usually the ball looses enough spin so that you can attack again if you actually do a "high" topspin and not the super flat fast ones.
My main Problem is if someone either by accident or because he knows what he is doing, switches between "spin reversal" and "removing spin"

Guys, don't listen to Seth, we pimples player hate when you serve short to the middle. And please, no spinny sidespin serves to the pimples :) Joking aside this video had some great tips and many common mistakes offensive players make that we take advantage of. Another tip if you are often looping out on anti or pimples pushes is to just wait longer before starting the stroke, this helps you adjust to the ball.

A great video, please take it offline 😛 a pips player 😛. No just kidding, loved it, good understanding of playing with pips/anti and against them. I always love the rallies with players who just start using more and more spin (top and side). Some of them still don't know or cannot handle what they get back... and most of them then avoid the bh, but my fh is my real power. I my experience some of the best and long rallies are between long pips and very offensive topspin players. By the way, did you know that in the history of tabletennis, first there were no rubbers and then became the short pips.... later on inverted rubbers were invented... so for all pip haters.... pips were first!

If you don't anticipate it and use FH and you have to use BE with LP how can you return this serve without giving an easy ball for the inverted player?

    • @PechPongTT

You have to catch it early and chisel it or find a way to play it shorter than normal, you can also work on the placement and think of blocking the next ball after if they like to use their fh placing it as wide as possible and then blocking to the open corner.

I use long pips and I would never never never let my opponent handle and rub a ball on my pips. This is my pet hate. They can look but don't touch. I am happy to give all the info that I know about my pips and sponge but keep your grubby hands off my pips. You can inspect them by looking but rubbing the pips can damage them. Yes I am grumpy about this.

Out of the 50 odd players in our club about 15 are pips, anti ,long, medium, tacky short pips whatever you want to call it ( They call themselves the Dark side 😅). I have been playing with them for the last 6 years. Because everyone is used to their game ,none, not a single one has ever reached the knockout stages of the class A tournaments. Now. People send their young ,10-15 year olds to our club just for exposure to these rubbers. No disrespect, not easy to play against them when you are a beginner or intermediate level player. But frankly they feed on people who have little experience against such rubbers. Hence no anti or pips in top 25 professional players for quite a while. Plastic ball is another problem.
