Mr. Mulligan - how the Howard DGA-6 won the Bendix Trophy

Mr. Mulligan is a Howard DGA-6 replica, built by Jim Younkin and acquired by Doug Rozendaal after Younkin's death. The original Mr. Mulligan was built specifically to win the Bendix Trophy, a famous air race from California to Cleveland, OH. The aircraft won the race in 1935, flown by Benny Howard and Gordon Israel; a couple of days later, it also won the Thompson Trophy, a closed-course pylon race at the 1935 National Air Races.
In this video, Doug Rozendaal tells the story of Mr. Mulligan and gives an overview of this beautiful airplane. He flies it at airshows like AirVenture and Sun 'n Fun as a reminder of the glorious time of airplane racing in the early days of aviation. We'll also see footage from inside the cockpit as Doug reenacts the historic race during the 2023 Sun 'n Fun airshow.

I have climbed Mt. Evans in Colorado at just a little over 14000 feet and remember the feeling of the thin air. I can't imagine going to FL210 in an aircraft without oxygen. Those boys are lucky they didn't kill themselves. What a remarkable story and what a beautiful aircraft to see and listen to.

It’s so great seeing Doug being a true caretaker of this aircraft and keeping it airworthy to share with the rest of us. It doesn’t belong in a museum. Yea, it’s a replica, but what a stunning one it is.

Doug's superior knowledge coupled with his speaking style/voice make him a fantastic story teller. I saw that plane fly a couple times back in the 80's at Airventure and it surprises you with its speed. You are accustomed to looking at big round engine planes that kind of lumber along like a Stearman or Waco and then this thing comes along and just blazes by.
