Top 10 Board Games For 2 Players (or Couples)

- Today we look at our 10 favourite board games to play with (and against) each other! Simple, complex, co-operative, competitive. We love to play a mix of all sorts of board games. These are 10 that stand out to us as "best at 2" and are always a blast to play!

My favourite 2p game is Everdell but the gameplay isn't different between 2p and 4p so it wasn't mentioned.
Most of these games (except 1) are multiplayer games that we think are better at 2p (which was the actual first prompt when we recorded) because it's more our playstyle but that doesn't mean they are not good at more than 2p! We also tried to pick not the obvious strictly 2p games like 7WD or Patchwork or the like (which we also love).
Edit: oh and I didn't explain why I love the races in Honey Buzz. It is that I love to rush everything in games (that's why I love Welcome To). 20 points is huge because that makes a 40 point swing (which I can understand can be a turnoff for some people but there's plenty of ways to score points that you could very well ignore the goals and win!). Money is always good to get because they are points at the end of the game (you can sell the nectar/pollen you produce too) and there's the Decree tiles that cost you 5 gold to play. I love how the market works, the values go down when you sell those so you could rush that too so it's quickly worthless for the opponent to take the market action.
Loved your rundown of HoneyBuzz and made me think it’d be fun to just watch you two play it as you were very expressive with your joy of the game 👍🏽

Honestly this game is a pepite, it manages to replace Splendor with 2 players and frankly it's incredible how I thought there was no point in having Splendor Duel when Splendor is already very good with 2 players...
Splendor Duel is really dynamic and much more fun, there's lots of interaction and you can also win in 3 different ways!
Buy it and you won't regret it (if you've already bought it, let me know what you think after several games, I'd be very interested :)

I found basic Splendor a bit boring after a while but I am really interested in the duel version of it. Bruno worked on it so it must be good.🤭 I think the grid with the gems is a very interesting twist. Also love that the box isn't stupidly oversized this time around lol!

Sinon pas cette semaine mais celle d'après, on pourra peut etre rejouer à BGA pour que tu puisse m'apprendre un nouveau jeu( meme si je sais que ce n'est pas facile d'expliquer, par exemple la dernière fois pour Earth ca a du te prendre longtemps mais au moins j'ai tout compris du jeu xD )
En parlant de Earth je n'y ai pas trop rejoué j'ai fait quelques parties mais je suis vraiment nul🥲😅

Mais du coup comment vous faites parce que les lives durent parfois 4h donc vous vous endormez à 4h du matin ? 😧

Very interesting thought on Bunny Kingdom indeed. I don’t mind it at two but everyone I’ve played it with doesn’t like it with less than 3
I'm definitely in the minority, and I do enjoy the game at all player counts. I think a lot of people are put off by the meanness in an otherwise cute game!
Once again you forgot to mention War of the Ring and Star Wars : Rebellion, I'm starting to believe it's intentional...

lol Dave Grohl is back again with LOTR. What's so different between a 2p and a 4p game for those games? Is it just the playtime that is added or is there different little mechanisms? 😁
And yes Honey Buzz is great! We've played a lot on TTS when I discovered the game. The game wasn't available to buy back then for me (I think it was a bit after the first KS campaign). Recently there's been a new campaign but honestly, it was so expensive I thought I'll buy it second hand when I find a good deal. I've read that Elk Creek Games is struggling with deliveries atm actually and asking backers to pay even more for shipping so I don't feel like I missed out on much.
The game is so pretty and super fun though. I love the puzzle aspect of it, obviously, but also how the value of the resources decreases as people sell stuff, and obviously the nice combos you can make like do some actions, complete an order which will grant a bonus action, which will then trigger something else and so on.
I know none of the game of Gwladys except the top 1 which i really don't like (but never played at 2 player...)
I was surprised not to see 7WD or even Wonderful world !!
The actual initial prompt was "games that are multiplayer that we think are better at 2p" because some things are different. I just decided to add Fog Of Love afterwards but at first Kingdomino was there lol. Kingdomino is a truly different game at 2p, it's fantastic!
Five Tribes is a really different game at 2p because of the 2 markers. We have played a few times at 3p and I didn't enjoy it as much. There was too much downtime and not enough control because the map has changed so much by the time it's your turn.
It's A Wonderful World is probably Sam's favourite configuration at 2p but the game doesn't change whatsoever. It's just more cards in your hand (10). For the base game, I prefer it solo. With the expansion I probably prefer it at 3p. Games like Res Arcana, I like but I think they're good at any player configuration so don't really qualify.

7WD is definitely top tier.
At first our prompt when recording was games that are multiplayer but that we prefer at 2p (I just added Fog Of Love).
We didn't want to put the obvious strictly 2p games that everyone knows and loves like 7WD or Patchwork but I agree they're awesome. 😀
Très intéressant de pointer les avantages de jouer à 2 par rapport à plus. C'est malheureusement le cas sur beaucoup de jeux quand on veut de la stratégie, surtout dans le jeu de draft. Dans ma liste il y aurait probablement Abyss et Akropolis. J'aimerais beaucoup essayer Stardew Valley et Fog of Love et je suis intrigué par Butterfly que je ne connaissais pas du tout !

Abyss et Akropolis sont vraiment fantastiques mais je trouve qu'ils sont bons à tout nombre de joueurs 😁
Mais je suis totalement d'accord que la plupart des jeux sont meilleurs à 2 pour plus de contrôle. Stratégiquement parlant, c'est plus logique de jouer à 2.
Butterfly est vraiment un jeu très méchant. Moi j'aime pas trop. 😛 Et encore moins à plusieurs parce que c'est facile de faire du kingmaking. Et je suis pas échecs à 2. Ce jeu, c'est un peu comme des échecs, je prends ça donc tu prends ça donc je prends ça, etc.

But tbf sometimes we chitchat and roll the cows and pass the box between 2 people while waiting for the others to pick a game, it is better at more where you can all yell together UDDERS UP!
Regarding Ark Nova on BGA: I played it today and I am 99 % positive I missed out on a card upgrade on the reputation track. Can this be a bug or am I missing something?
One time I accidentally selected new worker, rather than card upgrade. You can replay the actions from the game history to check.
@@NicholasLee0 But is that even an option on the reputation track (the one with the hats)? It should be just the card upgrade when passing a certain point.
@@jankogo it's happened when I combo-ed off another action. I ended up getting a worker twice, rather than a worker and a card upgrade. Was annoying, but I worked around it.

I haven’t encountered that before, that does seem very weird! It’s normally my 1st or 2nd upgrade so I am always looking out for it. Don’t think I’ve ever had it not upgrade for me.
Sorry for asking, but Gwladys, are you French ? Your accent sounds kinda French to my French ears - not stereotypically so, but perhaps the way someone who has travelled a lot would sound like. Or perhaps Portuguese.

Oui oui je suis française. Je trouve que j'ai pas d'accent quand je parle en français (enfin, l'accent pointu quoi) mais mes amis en Gironde m'ont toujours dit que j'avais un accent du Nord (pas trop d'accord lol) et une fois j'ai réservé un AirBNB à Bordeaux et le mec a cru que j'étais américaine donc bon bref, bizarre tout ça lol
@@Guudys ah, je ne t’ai pas entendu parler français du tout ; je n’ai regardé que cette vidéo:) C’est ton accent en anglais que je « commentais ». Comme j’ai dit, je le trouve « français mais pas vraiment », mais c’est fréquent chez les gens qui ont beaucoup bougé.

En tout cas, tu as une très bonne oreille. Les gens australiens qui ne me connaissent pas entendent un accent qui n'est pas australien mais n'arrivent jamais à trouver car c'est pas l'accent français à couper au couteau. C'est plus discret. Je suis quand même très française dans ma gestuelle et du fait que je fais beaucoup d'onomatopées même quand je parle en anglais.

This game is so great! For a long time, it was my favourite game ever (while Sam's was Abyss). We just played it a lot and we are dedicated to winning so for us, even 2p takes a while lol!
I adore the 2 main expansions too, especially the Whims of the Sultan actually. I've read that a lot of people prefer Artisans of Naqala and consider it a must have but I think while I love it, it's not necessary to enjoy the game. I've never played with Thieves but I'm not sure I would enjoy it, actually.
@@Guudys I find Five Tribes with 2 players a real Brain Burner, because of the possible double moves. I actually don't like the possibility of a double move. It feels wrong to me to set up a big move for myself and it increases play time significantly I believe. Five Tribes is actually one of the very few games I enjoyed more with 3 players than with 2 players. I do own and have played the Artisans of Naqala. But it's too long ago, so I don't remember much :) I think, I've enjoyed it, but didn't think it was at all necessary.
