Riding on large acreage can get you lost real quick. Especially if you're unfamiliar or there are no trail markings/you're breaking trail. Someone basic land nav skills go a long way. Anymore, I just use a gps/phone and drop point my start. Yes these can fail...but the likelihood is low. If the battery dies, it's operator error. I always bring my phone, a battery and cable have a compass keychain on my bag. Depending on how long you will be gone and the difficulty in terrain, a Garmin Inreach may be needed if you value your safety. A paper topo map doesn't hurt if you want to get real crazy. The forest can be very disorienting once you're deep in or haven't been paying attention cuz you're rippin.

I was more making this video for the people just starting out with riding dirt bikes and dipping their feet in to trail riding. I went through a similar experience at about the same age. I relived that panic of being lost and all alone while watching your video. Your dad is a very wise man and thank you so much for sharing his wisdom. The way I’ve been phrasing it to my wife is… always be aware of your surroundings. On the lighter side, my brother can’t navigate anywhere and he’s loving Tesla’s full self driving. Ha ha ha.
The guy you were riding with kept me on my toes the whole time. Randomly switching sides of a gravel road at high speeds, stopping at random points on technical spots. Love those bike though.
Most of the time, you can have a mental image of the lay of the land that works but isn’t actually anywhere close to accurate. But if you start with the low resolution image, then little by little you will learn more about got everything ties together. To me there’s something cool about trying to know every bit of a large piece of land, then learning something new every time you’re out there.

Wow your such a hero. Not all dirt bike clothes have pockets. And if you reply to me saying “but you can put one on the bike” Not all bikes can do that ok. And being in a group of people that know the trail. You would expect to be able to trust them. But it’s hard when I a group to know that someone is missing. And where he was it might of had no wifi so he call anyone. And don’t say to me “you can turn on SOS” when your panicking you forget about it. So next time you say something like that, and yes your right you should have a phone. Just don’t shit on someone because the got lost. Remember that ok.

@Meme33145 Yeah exactly. even though we should probably always carry a phone or device like that while riding, it's just not realistic to say that everyone will always have one on them. And to your point about signal, that's so true. It's quite easy to get to places with no cell service very quickly on a dirt bike. GPS or garmin inreach or something would be a good solution, but like i said before... not always realistic for everyone to carry one. yeah exactly. quite easy to get to places where there's no signal where I'm at as well
