Thanks a lot, brother, I want to harmonize my melody with chords(diatonic) and progress to techniques like chord substitution,is there any books that have the relevant exercises and some examples from popular music?(classical is also fine)
Can you suggest a book that would help me pass the MEGA music exam vocal and intrumental k-12? I am a teacher with a background in, music, but it was not my major in college- just a hobby. I studied the practice book and ordered an online practice test and passed it, but then when I took thr real test it was all about band, jazz, and listening for different modes as well as knowing who wrote what music according to the sheet music. I didnt pass becasue i was a string, piano and recorder player who played in orchestras and quartets. I don't knkw anythjng about band and jazz. Now I don't have any materials to study. I teach k-5th grade.
Hi Andrea, I made a video suggesting some books about jazz theory (modes etc) it's in the playlist for books worth reading. For history of jazz, 'The History of Western Music' by Grout, Palisca has an overview but there are other specialised books such as 'The History of Jazz' by Ted Gioia. A lot of books also give lists of works for listening which is something I'd recommend if you don't already do so. I'm not familiar with the MEGA exam but you mentioned you have already looked at their study material, is there some relevant to Jazz? Hope it goes well!
Hi @mymm, many harmony books cover 'Romantic' harmony. Especially in the later chapters of the book by Aldwell and Schachter (Harmony and Voice-Leading) for example, many aspects of harmony from that era are discussed.
