Just bought this Hornady kit consisting of Straight o.a.l. Gauge, head comparator kit, 223 modified case and the 308 modified case. English/American is not my mother tongue and your video cleared one of the issues I had. Thanks very much for that and yes you have a fan in Belgium :-) By the way best wishes for a sound and safe 2019. Best regards Eric
I ended up making my own comparator bushing from 3/8"i.d.-1/2o.d. x 3/4" steel bushing. I bored it over to .385 then cut a 45 degree chamfer just deep enough to widen the circumference of the mouth so the measuring point read what my go headspace gauge actually is (1.630"). So now I know an actual number rather than just a reference and adjust accordingly. Works so good I made another out of brass.
New reloader waiting on kit delivery. Other items ordered include comparator and maybe case length guage to keep things safe as per Sami. Doesn’t a full length sizing die accomplish this except for case neck length eventually. Good information
Thank you, I do like making them. I learn a ton from the audience to, people are always leaving comments, tip and tricks that have worked for them. Years ago when I started doing this there was no TH-cam, so getting the info out there for folks is a good thing.

Often wondered if the most important measurement is bullet olive minus shoulder measurement. Bolt pushes cartrage shoulder to chamber shoulder and establishes jump.
I knew it was .243 before you said it ! Those are my EXACT measure measurements for my .243 Lapua brass unfired and once fired. This measurement surprised me as SAMMI min headspace is 1.630 and I was worried if I was doing something wrong. Hornady reloaded recommends measuring the neck close to the shoulder and just below the shoulder and adding the two together and dividing by two ; he then chooses the closest bushing to that number. I only own the D bushing. Wondered if it gave a different reading.
The bushings for this gauge have the edges of the bores broken. This causes the gauge to read smaller than the real size of the cases. So the caliper reading cannot be used to get a SAAMI dimension unless you zero the Hornady gAuge on a gunsmith headspace gauge. However the gauge is still good for comparing once fired cases with FL sized cases. I shoot mostly at the rifle range so I set my dies to FL size a case to give a light drag when I close the bolt. For hunting I would push the shoulder back .002 on a once fired case.
Chief, helping your efforts I looked for the Hornady Headspace Comparator Kit in your url links (in the description field) but none found. Also note the sight adjusting tool, Link is broken. Take care No rush on my end. Enjoy the turkey hunt 😊
Hello, super youtube. Easy to understand for me, i’m a french canadian…..I don’t have new brass. Where can i find the lenght of the measure you explain ? Now, i have problem with .270 win brass and i have this kit . Thanks, Jean-Pierre
Great video . I always neck size my 270 brass after first shot which is custom fit to my chamber . Brass height is as SAAMI spec . But when ever i try with case length headspace guage it does not fit properly . Now my question is does my rifle has headspace issue ? Do i need to continue neck sizing or i should it to gun smith ?
Not trying to be a smartass as I also own one of these kits but would a something like a fired pistol case not work? .38 special seems to do a 6.5cm shoulder pretty well.
Do you have an opinion about using the procedure for one's own personal AR 15 style 223. Many say FL for all. I have the Remington R15 factory stock rifle. Don't see why it would be different than a bolt action.
New to reloading,so how do you just bump the shoulder? I have the set of 4 dies they are the Lee ultimate but do I need to buy a special die that just bumps the shoulder?......do you bump the shoulder then trim to overall length? Thanks any help appreciated
Does annealing help with the problem of full resize. I neck size mine until they get sticky in the chamber the I full length resize and aneal and go back to neck resizing. I use lapua brass for my 338 and have only necked sized thus far with that brass.
Vaughn could you please help me out? I’m brand brand new to reloading, I have brand new cases that measure 1.625 for my son’s .243 savage and some once fired that measure 1.630. I have the hornady 2 die set (full length sizing and seater dies). How do I get the necks back down to the 1.625? Does it have to be a Hornady neck sizing die only? I’m lost man
I use the Lee Precision Collet Neck die for most of my brass processing in conjuction with a Redding Body Die. The Body Die will resize the body and bump the shoulder back to your headspace preference and leaves the neck untouched.
Great channel! So the bullet comparator has bushings that are strikingly similar (but shorter) than the headspace comparator. It would seem to me that there should be a similar way to do the headspace measurement with the bullet comparator. Just my Scottish heritage speaking ... Is that possible?
No, not possible simply due to the internal diameter of the bushings. The shorter bushings have a much smaller hole while the other measures the shoulder of the case.
The Neck is only trimmed one time, usually trimmed to .13 or .14. The case Over All Length must be trimmed after each firing because it will stretch during each shot.
Do you bump the shoulder back every time, or just when you start seeing a sticky bolt. All I've every done is neck size with the Lee collet so I have no experience with this.
Can you use the FL die to resize just the neck if you only pull the press down enough before hitting the shoulder? Just wondering if I need a neck sizing die too, or if I can just use my FL die to do what you’re describing in this vid?
So I’ve been made a fool to think full length resizing was the way to go?! I just got into reloading 6.5CM (I’ve been reloading other calibers for years however) so for the best precision what die route should I go? I’ll be using my RL550C

Hello guys. Im brand new to reloading, in fact, I just got a Hornady LNL AP press 4 days ago at the time of this writing and im trying to learn what I can so I can be safe to myself and others. My question is neck sizing and bump sizing. Is neck sizing refering to the diamater of the case mouth where the bullet seats? and bump sizing refering to the neck length? or the shoulder to head length?
Botwire the neck is just the section of the case that holds the bullet. When you neck size, all you are sizing is the neck. When it comes to shoulders, you are bumping only the shoulder down a little, towards the head or (base) of the case. It’s important to know the case terms. Head, body, shoulder and neck. Then you have the primer pocket and flash hole. It’s a ton to learn and takes time but you’ll get it.!
Vaughn Precision Thanks for the explanation. currently im not going to reload rifle rounds yet. My first caliber starting out is going to be .380 Auto. I have an AR15 that can shoot 5.56 and .223 rounds which I plan to reload in addition to the .380 Auto. My shell plate can hold both .380 as well as .223 cases. Because I have an interest in reloading 223 cal. I figure I would research the information and learn the terminology as well.
I’m so glad I ran into this video, this made more sense to me thank you
Thanx for describing what this tool does

I didn't buy the whole kit. I just bought the bushings I needed. This has been a real eye opener and wish I would of had the comparator 20 years ago.

What is special about the anvil? Is it just a flat spot for the case head?

Reloading books often have factory case dimensions published in them.
Do a test between neck size and full length size I’m going to say way better groups with FL.

If you take a fired price of brass and resize it back 1 to 2 thousand you should have no problems.
The shoulder moves forward on firing. You just need to bump it back with a body die.
FL size each time..everytime..I have brass ive shot 8 or 10x always FL
Not trying to be a smartass as I also own one of these kits but would a something like a fired pistol case not work? .38 special seems to do a 6.5cm shoulder pretty well.

Yes I do

I do after the second firing
Does annealing help with the problem of full resize. I neck size mine until they get sticky in the chamber the I full length resize and aneal and go back to neck resizing. I use lapua brass for my 338 and have only necked sized thus far with that brass.

308 cal ,175 gr Sierra hpbt ammunition ,whats correct length to CBTO ?
What is the thread size on the tube for the comparator? Thanks.
What is New unfired brass headspace for 308 and fired brass? TY
All bench shooters full length size every time
Did you record your next video that you talk about? Neck sizing and your new sizer only?

No, not possible simply due to the internal diameter of the bushings. The shorter bushings have a much smaller hole while the other measures the shoulder of the case.
Is the Hornady bullet comparator bushings interchangeable with the Hornady headspace comparator body?
Once fired, new, fired 3 times.... trim neck to obtain 2.035 and go with it. This just seems like a extra step? Please correct me if im wrong.
The Neck is only trimmed one time, usually trimmed to .13 or .14. The case Over All Length must be trimmed after each firing because it will stretch during each shot.
Will this take care of my one inch flyers?
Possibly but it could be other issues to
Enjoy your videos. What number hornady gage do you use for the 6.5 Creedmoor? I've heard number 400.
Did you figure out which one to use ? I'm now trying to figure it out
Do you bump the shoulder back every time, or just when you start seeing a sticky bolt. All I've every done is neck size with the Lee collet so I have no experience with this.
I bump about every 2 to 4 reloads depending on how hot I'm running things .
Consistisy is the name of the game in reloading, you should reload the same way everytime to get the most consistent amo possible.
Do you recommend the snap on calipers?
i dont see a link to the headspace comparitor, maybe the oal guage is supposed to be it?
What is the shoulder bumping die you like best?
those 5 gauges cover most all the cartridges?
On your new brass that you use as a standard to compare your fired brass, how do you know what headspace you have to start with for the new brass?
Rick Lander I take measurements on the new brass, then fire form it and measure again
