Theres a glitch on 1st gen if you turn off the game as you save it corrupts your save you continue move a few invisble pokemon and throw out a certain amount of an item that get 0.00 time
Here's some explanation:
He wasn't getting encounters in viridian forest because if you follow a certain route you are guaranteed no encounters.
He saved before catching nidoran to manipulate the game such that gets that nidoran on that tile and is guaranteed to catch it with one pokeball. Same for Mt. Moon and paras (manip and no encounters).
He talked to the bicycle dude when he can't get the bike to give instant text, so the animation for text to show doesn't happen.
He did it the second time because the instant text gets reset at Bill's house.
He was able to hit the horn drills very successfully due to X-Accuracies being broken in Gen 1 and causing pokemon to skip the accuracy check (to always hit ) instead of increasing chances.
He also many times lost HP on purpose so that his health bar is in the red region. This increases the speed of everything in this game.
Edit: This was written as soon as I heard Michael question it, I didn't know he clarified them later when I wrote this.

He puts squirtle and paras in the pc to make the hall of fame animation shorter, but I think that's pretty obvious.

I just wanna say that the reason he saves and quits every once and a while is to manipulate rng. With specific inputs after every save and quit, he can guarantee wild Pokémon encounters (such as skipping a bunch of wild battles or guaranteeing a wild Pokémon with good ev’s).
Also he talks to the bike guy because it initiates a code that stops text animation.
Both of those things are glitches which makes it weird that they are used in the glitchless runs.
I guess you COULD argue the rng manipulation isn't technically a glitch, but the bike guy text speed is absolutely a glitch
@@brandonlink7091 The reason the text thing was not deemed a glitch is because it is initiated by doing something intended in the game. The thing that starts it is just talking to the bike guy without the bike waucher, which you are meant to be able to do

@@brandonlink7091 As I have heard it; it was a huge discussion in the community. So I do not think that there is a definitive answer to the question. I can se how you can argue that since it is so easy to do in a casual play trough and by mistake, it is just a part of the game's wierdness, even though it probably was a mistake from the programmers side when programming the game.
Edit: also there is the "glitchless (classic)" category where it is not allowed. The main reason why people dislike it is because it resets every time opening the menu. Meaning that you cannot heal the team etc. And the run therefore gets more RNG depended.
@@antonvigensmolarz2250 glitchless rules for any game are always weird and arbitrary, in this particular example it makes more sense to me that the text speed thing be counted as a glitch, because imo a glitch is defined by an altered output on the game, and not on how you achieve that output
I think he deposited his pokemon before the league to save time with the hall of fame cutscene
Mikey, look at this, he resets the game to reset the RNG, so that when he takes a certain path through a place, he will get no encounters, or the perfect nidoran, also, the bike person is used to activate instant text. Last thing, he needs red bar, so that he can skip the level up music.

Pokefan 999 it's a random number generator, in this game, the number decides what Pokemon appear when. And the "random" number is how many steps you take. When you save and quit, the number is reset

Basically when something is not guaranteed. The game assigns numbers to many possible outcomes. However the game chooses numbers at random. So, outcomes are also random!
Yeah. In these earlier games, RNG is determined by what the player does, which means that he can make what he wants in a speedrun to happen with certain conversations and steps. This is called RNG manipulation, and it's perfectly okay even in glitchless.

The reason for him taking the damage is because when the “low HP” noises start to play, they cancel out the battle cry of a Pokémon which takes more time

If you are making money out of it in any shape or form, you have to. You can do reviews, educational stuff, and parodies provided you don't make money out of any of those. You can't review the work of somebody else by showing all their work with your voice over for example. It's not a quote or a mention of other person's work but sharing of their whole product. Fair use takes into account money making, reasons for sharing, and quantity of the work shared, and this case is clearly not under fair use.

I think it is a stupid rule, but it definitely exists. I am just unsure about the percentage, but I think it was around 80%.

When i was like 5 years old, i found out i could use rare candies to revive pokemon when i was desperate in the elite 4. never seen it done by anyone else till now

I remember doing in it Pokémon Brick Bronze. Anthian sewer. Time stopped. A single Pokémon alive in the red. Healed it up, but minimal PP on most their moves due to the battles beforehand. No escape to the Pokémon Center. I frantically searched my bag. 1 revive. Well, Lucie (my Lucario) resists the upcoming Electrode's Self Destruct, so let's heal her. Oh, rare candies here? Okay.. Use it on Lucie. Wait.. Her HP went up?
And then everyone was alive. I would not have won without the Rare Candies I got by jumping on top of some dude's roof.

As a former Pokemon Red Runner it's so funny hearing you talk about how he is lucky and not knowing anything about stuff like rng manipulation xD
6:11 not exactly, hes using tail whip, because he needs to save up every pp he can, so he doesnt have to visit the pokemon center. generally tail whip is only worth it if you need like 5 hits to KO like for example during the very first rival battle (in any game pretty much) but if your starter has super flawless stats then using tackle can be better i think.
Some speed run tips that might've gone over your head throughout the video:
-speaking to the bike man before you can get it increases text speed until certain things turn it back down
-red health increases text speed
-hard resetting in certain areas messes with the rng, guaranteeing a lv.4 nidoran, decreasing spawn rate in Mt. Moon for a while and guaranteeing paras, etc.
-speed is the determining factor in ohko move accuracy in Gen 1 but X Accuracy guarantees hits as long as they're out in that battle

@@SoggySlopster X-Accuracy is bugged in Gen 1 to where it will guarantee a hit no matter what. If you don't think it is legit, try it out for yourself.
The reason why he wanted the vine whip to happen is that: if your Pokemon is in red hp, the text goes by faster
and it can use sleep powder

A year later, but the reason he has so few encounters during early stretches like the forest and mt moon is because there are specific tiles that have a 0/near 0 chance at producing an encounter if you hit them at certain frames (gotta be fast and accurate as any misstep messes this up). Needless to say these tiles have been mapped out and memorized by all Gen 1 runners. Excellent reaction! Cheers in 2022

There are certain tiles in the game where wild pokemon don’t spawn thats how he got through so many parts without wild encounters

Lol I got a shiny eevee from sos hunting in ultra sun and named it that! He’s now evolved into Umbreon now though. HE LOOKS SO COOL!!!
The red Hp strat is called redlining. In gen 1, if your Pokémon has health in the red, text will immediately appear on screen rather than taking the time to slowly write itself out. As such, battles go faster in red health, so it’s a constant struggle between safety and speed

Note to Michael : you can un-faint a Pokemon using a rare candy in almost all generations, since the damage they gave taken stays constant but their base HP increases due to the level up, thereby leaving them with the amount of HP they gained from leveling up
I abused the hell out of this in Legends: Arceus.
Note that in this speedrun, Rare Candy revival is far preferable to using a Pokemon Center. It leaves your Pokemon with extremely little HP. When it's low enough for the annoying low health chime to play, that sound overrides many other sounds that the game stops and waits to finish playing.
I found it out in my first play of Pokemon firered
I like that Snorlax has so much HP that's it's legitimately a good time-saver to run instead of OHKO them with Horn Drill, from how long it would take his health bar to drop to 0.
7:36 their is a specific pathing that prevents wild encounters used in speedruns
You only get the paras before the grunt and the save also manipulates it I think

The idea of speed running always sounds interesting to try until it gets super technical and you're counting frames and what not.

No, the time from when the doctor tells him that and turning on the gameboy needs to be considered too
4:36 he resets to manipulate RNG to get a nidoran. The game counts steps and gives Pokémon accordingly, giving the feeling of random. A reset resets the step counter, making a nidoran guarenteed
10:02 he doesn’t get a bike because if you y’all to the bike npc, the game sets a flag that makes text appear instantly, rather than slowly typing out. If you don’t get the bike, the game never removes the flag and all text will appear instantly. This saves iirc ~:30-1:00
I started reading more about Bike Shop instant text glitch. It was allowed in a glitchless category for some time. Reasoning for this was that it's tricky to maintan - any yes/no text box, healing in pokemon center or opening start menu will stop the glitch.
It allowed me to read more even tho it fits
I've never seen a Speedrun before, but I knew about the Marowak/Pokedoll trick- so cool to see someone put that in action to speed up the game!!
do you know a good trick to find a wild pokemon with good EV's stat?

It’s a world record run, nothing you see is a mistake.
If you talk to him before having a voucher it maxes all text appear instantly instead of letter by letter like normal. Saving a chunk of time. It resets when you do bills house so you do it again. It’s something that was debated for a while in the speed running community if allowed in glitchless but was ruled ok

Hayley Tilghman gen1 games had a lot of odd coding glitches, stemming from the amount they had to get into a single cartridge, they used every trick in the book to make it work, but sometimes the cracks show lol
@O K I know there isn't, this run is very very good, and the bike thing was clarified to be intentional. However, in the grand scheme of speedruns, its not rare to find a WR run with mistakes, particularly if a huge timesave that is hard to do is successfully preformed, but minor blunders are made along the way.

7:06 The saving and resetting was for RNG Manipulation. For this reset, he did it to never get any wild encounters until the paras for Cut.

@Whyte Chocolate that's no more or less nothing than you'd get for being the game regularly. The general appeal of speedruns is that they require you to have a in depth understanding and engagement with all the games mechanics and design in order to pull them off properly.

I get what you mean, but if you have played through gen 1 a trillion times, you kind of want to spice things up every once in a while:)
I once did a spontaneus speed run of gen one and even with little to no research I still managed to play through it in like 3 hours. So you don't exactly need to practice speed running to be able to get a good time.

What i always hope to see in reaction videos is the reactor finding out the answers to their questions during/after the reaction. Twelve minutes in, and im praying that Michael just googles (like for the save/reset, pidgey, bike man) but that would take away from his genuine reaction.

In my first playthrough of Blue, I actually never know the rocket base existed. I accidentally figured out the poke doll skip, and that's how I thought it was supposed to work. Kid me was a natural speed runner I guess.

As someone who played through gen 1 a lot because I grew up with Pokémon Red, it’s funny how all of these weird things (revive with rare candy, x accuracy, etc) were so normal and not surprising , but I also forgot they were part of the game lol

They made a special route for speed running in gen1 were you can't get a single acounter
It's just RNG manipulation. He save and restart the game to reset the RNG and then he manipulate it with that specific route he follow, doing that his only enconter in that cave is a Paras that is being caught by 1 single poke ball.

@@marukorino. well the community found out, that there are patches of grass, that cannot generate an encounter, and the others are worked around by RNG manipulation. The patches probably cannot generate an encounter because either the space on the cardridges was to low or it was left out to not overrun the player

The reason he talks to the bike shop owner is because due to an oversight in the games code when you talk to the owner and leave the shop the text speed becomes instant which can save some very precious frames
in case you didn't know, you can still revive a pokemon using a rare candy in sword and shield, because it gains an increase in health with the stat changes, but de dmg taken is still the old health amount, meaning it will be revived.

You should try the “Ultimate Nuzlocke Challenge.” Essentially, it’s the same rules of a Nuzlocke, but with added challenges.
1) This Nuzlocke challenge must be played in Pokémon Diamond or Pearl, objectively one of the hardest Pokémon games in the main series.
2) You cannot use healing or battle items during battle. Moves that heal Pokémon are allowed.
3) You cannot catch the same species of Pokémon more than once. Example, catching a Starly on Route 202, you cannot catch another in a later route.
4) You are only allowed to catch Pokémon using only normal Poke Balls.
5) Once you enter a gym, you cannot leave until you have beaten the leader.
If you ever decide to try a Nuzlocke challenge, I think this would be fun to see, exciting to tell, and glorious to achieve.

yes, you can do that in any game. Rare candies raise the level by one (obviously) and every time you level up, your health stat increases, causing your pokemon to have 1-4 health depending on how much you get per level.

Fun fact for people watching in 2021, Lorelei’s Dewgong goes for rest on Nidoking because it is a poison type and AI sees rest (a psychic type move) as super effective because of type matchup
I don’t know if any comments answered this, but squirtle is the best option due to getting a STAB move as soon as possible. I know for a fact that bulbasaur gets leech seed before vine whip which makes it slower than bubble squirtle. As a plus, nidoking is better than ivysaur due to stats, move pool and efficiency.

When he resets he doing something called RNG Manipulation. This helps with the wild encounters dropping. That’s why he doesn’t do the optimized route cause each input changes the RNG. This also helps with encounters so the first reset is to guarantee nidoran it’s also why he takes some weird steps in between. I’m new to the whole Pokemon Red Speedrunning thing so this might be wrong.
Mt moon is incredibly hard to get that manip
And the reset outside of surge is to reset the frames counted (an internal clock counts the frames and when you reset the game it goes back to zero) to reset where the switches are since the first one is in the front and the second is next to it on the left for a certain amount of time
The quitting is paired with exact walking and button presses on specific tiles, especially in Mt. Moon

24:13 Actually rare candies work like that in all generations. It's because when you level up the additional hp you get is added to the pokemon's total hp and their current hp.

Soooo... with gen 1 certain path you take are less likely to run into wild encountered. Each grass/cave tile has a % of a wild encounter happening. Certain paths will take you across the tiles that have the lower encounter rate. With speed run you are constantly changing TMs at certain times that way you delay pokecenter heal because your pp will be most likely to not run out.
