The singer and keyboardist, Steve Winwood, was 14 when he joined the band. He had already been playing bars with his father and older brother where they turned the piano and made him play with his back to the crowd because he was so underage! He had also already backed people like BB King, Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry and Bo Diddly on their tours in England.
He went on to play in the group Traffic, formed the group Blind Faith with Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker, and played in the group Ginger Baker's Air Force. He and his brother Muff wrote this song and it was released in 1966, when he was 18 years old.

Steve Winwood is one of the essential superstars of the past 60 years. Monster vocals, monster keyboards, monster songwriter, fantastic guitarist - everybody, EVERYBODY wanted to play with him. It's his organ on Jimi Hendrix' "Voodoo Child" from Electric Ladyland. Clapton joined with him for Blind Faith - you must hear "Can't Find My Way Home". And one of the nicest superstars of all time. World famous in his mid-teens, still strong today. Just fabulous.

The guy singing and playing keyboard is none other than Steve Winwood, who was 19 at the time of this video in 1967. He had several solo hits in the '80s. Remarkable talent. "Gimme Some Lovin'" by the Spencer Davis Group was one of the true landmark rock 'n roll songs to come out of the '60s. Just incredible.

I was a kid in Detroit when this came out & I thought this was a black band. He has so much soul in his voice, it has Motown written all over it. Btw, I still have the 45. I'm now 67 yrs old.

As many have already said, Steve Winwood is the name of the lead singer here, and you will most likely find lots more of him to enjoy spanning his career in different bands, as a solo artist, and duets with the likes of Eric Clapton! Try 'Higher Love' (1986) featuring Chaka Khan on backing vocals! "Gimmie Some Lovin" also featured in the film - 'The Blues Brothers'Thanks for the reaction.

This song was written by the group's lead singer, Steve Winwood (Spencer Davis was their guitarist - he was chosen as the group's namesake because he was the only one who enjoyed doing interviews). Winwood says they banged it out in the studio in the first or second take. The song was also written on the fly. In Rolling Stone magazine, bassist Muff Winwood (Steve's brother) said, "Steve had been singing, 'Gimme ლ(╹◡╹ლ ) some lovin', ❤' just yelling anything. It took about an hour to write, then down the pub for lunch." Blue-eyed soul R&B.

Stevie Winwood was a phenomenon, beyond which it's difficult to judge. And it's slightly a shame that modern generations don't recognize him more - beyond samples on certain pop songs.

You guys are really on a roll with the most soulful British singers of the mid to late 60's. First, leading the way was Eric Burdon with his Animals, then following on his heels, the Two teenaged prodigy soul singers Steve Marriott of Small Faces and Stevie Winwood of Spencer Davis Group! These two skinny little white kids (17/18) from London had the ability to sound like the most soulful of middle aged black men. This British Invasion era of Rock was like an explosion of Talent and creativity. Winwood and Marriott were BRILLIANT!!!
Thank you very much - Love all these guys.

When I was goin to 7th & 8th grade, and in high school EVERY FRIDAY there was a dance. BANDS played at the dances, NOT RECORDS. That tune was played by every band! From 7th grade through at least my sophomore year in high school I danced to that tune. I graduated in 1972.

One of my favorite concert stories. I was at the Philadelphia Spectrum, now demolished, to see the Grateful Dead on 9/22/87. At the beginning of the second set Bob Weir stepped up to the microphone and said "I'd like to introduce Spencer Davis". The crowd went wild because we knew what was coming, "Gimme All Your Lovin' ", with Spencer on vocals and The Dead as his backing band. It went well. Video and audio tapes exist of the moment. Unforgettable.

I’m really sorry that you guys didn’t react to the studio version of this. This live version, although good, is a bit tame compared to the original studio version, which is ferocious! The lead vocalist here is Steve Winwood, who went on to play with Traffic, Blind Faith, and from there has gone on to have a tremendous solo career! I’ll bet you’ve heard some of his solo material at some point in your travels.

Steve Winwood was - and still is - a musical phenomenon. He was only a teenager when this was recorded. Check out his other work with SDG, Traffic, Blind Faith, and as a soloist. Try SDG's "Keep on Running" as a starter. A lot of British bands, especially in the midlands and further north were heavily influenced by American R&B and Soul in the 60s - there's even a style called "Northern Soul" that covers bands like Spencer Davis Group, The Animals, and Them.

Steve Winwood...superstar. Check out some traffic ‘empty pages’, ‘mr fantasy’, ‘shootout at the fantasy factory’ some blind faith ‘sea of joy’ ‘cant Find my way home’, ‘presence of the lord’...his organ work with Hendrix on ‘voodoo chile’. Then his solo stuff. There is a Hendrix documentary where they said that Hendrix wanted to ask steve to join the J.H. experience but was scared to ask. The drummer (Mitch Mitchell) said ‘at any time, anywhere we’d have jumped at the chance to have steve in the band’. High praise. I’d say that this young kid in the video had listened to more than his share of Ray Charles in his young life...

    • @jenniferfoster1692

Steve talked about his love of Ray Charles and singing like him, but said he eventually felt it was taking a toll on his voice so he went to his natural voice..which of course isn't so far from this..he's naturally got power and soul, even now in his 70s.

Spencer Davis is the guy who introduced the song. This is taken from a session they did in Finland in 66 or 67 with some more songs on which is well worth checking out. Never took a girl to the dances as it was much more fun cruising the crowd to see who you could pick up for a dance or two. And who knows, maybe you got lucky that night and wound up exploring the far out-of-sight places around the campus.

Hi Shawn and Mel, I love this song! It always makes me want to dance. I really like the keyboard part, it just makes the song. The singer has some old soul, Soul and just the right amount of rasp and grit. That was fun, I loved seeing them play it live. Whoa Nelly!

Try "Can't Find My Way Home" by Steve when he's about 70 years old now.

This song was played at every high school dance! Sounds just as good today as it did then!

Lol Hey it’s cool to say it. I totally thought at least the lead singer was a black guy also until I saw the video myself. He sings with soul. Sounds almost like Al Green or James Brown.

Stevie Winwood is an absolute Superstar IMHO. He's been in many bands, and done some duets, and also some solo work. He's doing a fabulous job here, but please listen to the studio version after this. You certainly won't be disappointed. ❤🎵🕺💃🔥🎼🇬🇧
