One thing you have to remember is that when this song was Recorded and released in the 60's they were made for " Radio" and the Play time usually went no more than 3 Minutes so writing a song back then that you wanted yo hit the charts meant you had to compress the song into that 3 minute time frame . Steve Winwood has been a Major Force in the progression of Rock Music all his Life and one of the most talented performers ever .

    • @daveowens9849
      @daveowens9849 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

And that three-minute mark fit the 45 records! Anything longer, and it couldn't fit! I still have most of my 45's from back in the day. Albums at 33 1/3....long gone sadly.

@@daveowens9849 Um. Hey Jude was on a 45 and it was 5+ minutes. It was really the radio stations that didn't want to play such long songs, they were sure nobody would listen to something so long.

The funny thing about this song is that these guys (Steve, his brother Muff and Spencer Davis) wrote this song basically over lunch, making the head of A & R at the record label furious, thinking they were goofing off, but instead handed him a hit song. By the way, that's Muff Winwood on bass in this song, and he had to sneak teenage Steve into bars to play gigs. It never ceases to amaze me that a teenager had a voice like that and that he has aged like fine wine.

As recalled by bassist Muff Winwood, the song was conceived, arranged, and rehearsed in just half an hour. At the time, the group was under pressure to come up with another hit, following the relatively poor showing of their previous single, "When I Come Home", written by Jamaican-born musician Jackie Edwards, who had also penned their earlier number one hits, "Keep On Running" and "Somebody Help Me". The band auditioned and rejected other songs Edwards offered them, and they let the matter slide until, with a recording session looming, manager Chris Blackwell took them to London, put them in a rehearsal room at the Marquee Club, and ordered them to come up with a new song.
“We started to mess about with riffs, and it must have been eleven o'clock in the morning. We hadn't been there half an hour, and this idea just came. We thought, bloody hell, this sounds really good. We fitted it all together and by about twelve o'clock, we had the whole song. Steve had been singing 'Gimme, gimme some loving' - you know, just yelling anything, so we decided to call it that. We worked out the middle eight and then went to a cafe that's still on the corner down the road. Blackwell came to see how we were going on, to find our equipment set up and us not there, and he storms into the cafe, absolutely screaming, 'How can you do this?' he screams. Don't worry, we said. We were all really confident. We took him back, and said, how's this for half an hour's work, and we knocked off 'Gimme Some Lovin' and he couldn't believe it. We cut it the following day and everything about it worked. That very night we played a North London club and tried it out on the public. It went down a storm. We knew we had another No. 1.”

I was in high school 1966-70. We had dances almost every Friday or Saturday night and had some great music to dance to. We didn't worry about the lyrics too much, but it had to have a good beat. Gimme Some Lovin' had about the best beat. Interesting side note - our dances were almost always live bands. Where I live, we didn't get big name bands, but there were a lot of good bands that worked a circuit around here. We only danced to records at a party in somebody's back yard or with friends at their house. One time a bunch of us met on some ranch land and put our cars in a circle so all our lights were pointing inward, tuned all our radios to the same station and had an impromptu dance.

When Steve Winwood went solo after Derek And The Dominoes went there separate ways, he put out a solo album called Arc Of A Diver. The title track is a really good track, but the hit song was While You See A Chance. It's a great 80s track of Steve's. Lots of synth and his unique vocals up front.

Stevie Winwood was not in Derek and the Domino’s. Arc of the diver was recorded in 1982 or 83. It’s a great record..

Totally agree, I like the raw sound this has. The Blues Brothers is really good but if I'm going to listen to this song it Spencer Davis everytime.
You should check out Steve Winwoods Arc Of A Diver.

I am so glad you guys get just what a fantastic song this is 😊 I have been a DJ for a few more decades than I would care to admit, and this song has never been out my record/CD bag in all those years 🖤 Steve Windwood has been played in my house since I was a kid so life without Steve Windwood would just be unbearable. Like life without Jimi Hendrix or Otis Redding…I mean Jeez, how awful would that be? 🤯🫣😣
Have you listened to The Small Faces? I think you’d love Steve Marriot’s voice. They were the same vintage and pioneers of their own sound too. Check out “What You Gonna Do About It?” and maybe give their first album a go. 60s music of the highest quality! 🤩 Actually check out their version of Sha-La-La-La-Li (can’t remember who did the original 😂)
Cheers guys, love your reviews and love the diversity of your tastes. Truly inspiring 😎🍀💚👍🍻

For 1966, their sound was absolutely revolutionary. This may have been remastered but there is an original video out there that carried a ton of high quality instrument playing.

This song makes me think of "The Big Chill"(1983). One of the greatest movie soundtrack of all time. If you were around in 83 you more then likely had this soundtrack.

You owe it to yourself to react to more Traffic ("Empty Pages") and Blind Faith ("Well Alright" & "Sea of Joy"). One other Traffic song worth mentioning is "Light Up or Leave Me Alone" which features Jim Capaldi on lead vocal.

At last! This was the performance that put Winwood on the map.
Besides Steve's scorching vocal, shout out to Muff Winwood, Steve's brother who played bass. He came up with that pile-driving bass riff that propels the song.
So much more Winwood to discover:
With Blind Faith: "Sea Of Joy."
With Traffic: "40,000 Headmen" "Freedom Rider" "Empty Pages" "Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys."
solo career: "While You See A Chance" "Spanish Dancer" "Night Train" (all on his Arc Of A Diver LP).

There was a flood of raw hot rock bands back in the 60's -- Jeff Beck Group, Bob Seger, Cream, Vanilla Fudge, Hendrix (obviously), Deep Purple - who'd I forget? Blue Cheer, Iron Butterfly, Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Janice Joplin with Big Brother & the Holding Company, Steppenwolf, Spirit, etc
