ADVICE TO ANYONE ABOUT TO PERFORM THSI! IT WORKS but READ THIS SO YOU DONT SHANK IT.
I had to absolutely destroy the plastic fitting on the old key that is removed second, as my screw driver wouldn’t pry it open from the bottom with the metal part. I pryed hard from the key and it didn’t budge.
If you are like me, just commit to it, stuff the old key anyway, all you need is the chip to get it started.
but after I got it open and inserted the old chip, ensure the metal battery housing IS INSTALLED CORRECTLY in its place in the housing, then the trickery- key positioning with the spring, (incorrectly twisting it and fucking up the spring loading ability of the key was my downfall) , chuck in the battery + side up, then I clipped it back together and it worked an absolute charm. mate you rippa!
This swifty swindle was Bonza mate and works better than a child in a candy store would on a good day.
Struth oath, I will be recommending this on to anyone i meet on my life journey.
Can’t believe my eyes. This actually works and without fault.
Ps- one key bit of advice, (pun intended)
if you need to take the forceful way of prying the old key open, whatever you do, be careful! Ensure you don’t accidentally slip with the screw driver and then strike the chip inside. Then you would be up shit creek without a paddle. and then you would have no way to drive home when you get to your car parked beside shit creek.
Cheers mate you are a life saver, a legend, and i will be referring you to my old mate, the pope, for the Holy consideration of sainthood.

I know your comment is from 4 years ago, but I had this same problem and realized there's a fucking screw under the black chevy logo on the back. bet thats why it didnt wanna come out. That would also explain why it came with a screwdriver.

Thank you, Harrison Keys! Of the 3 TH-cam videos I watched on how to replace my broken Chevy Cruze 2012 key FOB, yours was by far the best! I really appreciate the close up shots, especially the one showing how to extract the force fit pin ... they made a huge difference.
My local Chevy Dealer wanted $80 apiece to replace my broken Key FOBs! Total profit for them! Both FOBs failed in the same place ... the cheap pot metal base that the key shank is inserted into. So by viewing your video and purchasing a FOB with the Key Blank off Amazon for $10, I was able to do it myself in 30 mins. Thanks again for sharing you repair techniques!

Thanks for the video ... I would have never been able to have done this without it. I had a tremendously hard time opening the old fob. I had to score the edges of the fob's seams, and then use closed needle nose pliers into the side opening (then spreaded them open) to get that fob apart.

The video was helpful but it took a lot more to get the lower section to open up. I had to slide a knife blade between the two pieces and actually had to break open the side of the case before it would release enough to open and get the circuit board out. Once I got that far it was much simpler. It looked like the new and old flipper were compatible and I thought I could get by without having to switch the arms but..no luck. Switching the arms was not difficult but I did have to file the groove just a little to get the pin to start and then it tapped in very nicely. All works great! Thank You!!

Ok, it looks like the new shell in this video has no circuitry inside. I guess Flip Keys sells these casings with the screw under the Chevrolet emblem (which mind didn't have). I bought my new key somewhere else and it was a whole key, complete with circuitry and looked like it was going to be just as difficult to open as the old key.
I didn't want to demolish it like I did the old key, so I ended up just switching out the metal key part and programming it myself. I don't have a vice so I put a thumbtack face-up poised at that little pin and pushed down on the key (which worked!). This video was still somewhat helpful.

Just buy a whole new key fob with uncut key ($35.00 Amazon) and drive out the pin and swap the key part onto the new key fob. Programming the new fob is super easy. There's another TH-cam video showing how.
I started out trying to get my chip out of my damaged fob but it did not come apart like in this video so I just swapped the key onto the new fob.
Very good video though showing how to replace the key part.

He made it look too easy, I had to use a combination of things to get my old one apart and it ended up in 50 pieces. I am really happy with the results though for $8, it looks and works great
One note, the car won't start without the battery in the chip, so don't start breaking it apart the night before you have to go to work thinking you can drive the car with just the metal part of the key, what a fantastic design. They should have made the buttons as tough as they made the case halves go together.

If you use needle-nose pliers to separate the case it is a lot smoother and less likely to damage the plastic. I learned from experience.

  • @vince8436

Wish mine was as easy. Not sure what happened but mine was fully factory sealed. There was no prying it open. I ended up jabbing myself several times and ultimately used a hacksaw blade to slice apart.
Not like someone glued it together as we bought the car new. Finally had a second issue, I had to change the negative connector from what came in the package to the original from GM. The bends were different. I fought the thing for two hours. Even had an issue when the case was together without key it worked perfectly but when key was installed it quit working.
Finally figured that one out. In this case the button from new case had to be used and I had accidentally picked up the one from old fob. Turns out the smallest tab on the old button was 1mm longer, just enough to make the buttons not work. Yikes.

HI. Best video so far!! Thank you for posting it!
I ordered a fob on Amazon today for 13 bucks =). I will be attempting to replace and reprogram it my original GMC Terrian key. At the dealership I was quoted $85.47 for the fob/key cut and an additional 50 bucks to have it programmed. I decided to see if I could DIM and I found this video and I think I can pull it off. I also found the easiest reprogramming video ever. But what I would like to know is in regards to this video...
Can the original key (whole) be placed/fit into the new fob?
I ask because I would prefer to do that than to attempt to removal the pin with a special tool/hammer/angle etc. That just look complicated. BUT...(sigh) if I must I will give it my best.
    Please advise! Thanks

You missed the part where if you have an Original flip key they're acutally glued and sealed where it's not possible to just pry it open and if you attempt to cut through it with anything then you run the risk of hitting the circuit board. And why did you pull the pin and change the blade instead of just swapping it over with the wheel. Not to be a dick but you need an honest disclaimer here.

    • @uncertain_zee
      @uncertain_zee ปีที่แล้ว

For the blade thing, i had to do the same on mine because the holding on the new one is just slightly off and it won't work with my original key (they don't want to make it easy to diy). For the insane difficulty getting the original key open... I got nothing. Spent the entire day doing something i thought would take a few minutes and might've damaged the circuit board, I'll find out tomorrow.
