Perfection is false but hope is never lost like the ebb and flow where there is darkness there will be light and no matter how bad things get it will NEVER be hopeless. So long as Elesh Norn is the vain tyrant, she is spewing oil of Phyrexia's "perfection" from both sides there will be a Rebelion. This is just a theory of mine, but what if Teferi went to the future after the events of the Brothers' War? He saw what happened that the Phyrexians won the battle. He then mastered his Time magic and went back to the past. He encountered Lilliana and told her about the event that will happen in the future. Lilliana went to Strixhaven to teach the next wave of heroes. That's why she was teaching Will and Rowan.

My best guess is that after fully realizing what it takes to turn a planeswalker, Jin Gitaxis was able to engineer a new version of the oil that avoided the part that needed to be left alone. The Oil 2.0 overrides the old infection, sure the old version still exists but now its got new "instructions" for the completion process.

Sure we all know that they would lose, but not because they would start fighting amongst themselfs, that's my only gripe with the story of this set.

Personal theory for why these planeswalkers so easily turned is that the glistening oil used on them was "modified" by the phyrexians. From the story, Jin-Gitaxias is clearly capable of making massive leaps in understanding glistening oil and how it infects. Perhaps his study of Tamiyo's completion allowed him to refine the process to a point where certain concentrations of glistening oil can complete a planeswalker without assistance. Also, its been stated numerous times throughout this story that Mirrodin's landscape was particularly susceptible to corruption. So much so that it has resulted in transforming phyrexians from black/colorless zombies into multicolored beings. Mirrodin has influenced the phyrexians equally as much as the phyrexians have corrupted Mirrodin. It wouldn't be so hard to believe then that over time the glistening oil would "evolve" in this environment. So yeah, the fact that they turn easily without much reason given is a bit annoying, but the phyrexians have been planning for an all consuming invasion of every reality in the multiverse. Wouldn't it therefore be sensible to think that they'd be pretty well prepared to deal with planeswalkers quickly considering they are Phyrexia's only threat to total domination?

Well, the situation with Urza was he did die, he just sparked in that moment, and even though his physical body was destroyed, Oldwalkers in the pre-mending days were not bound to any physical form, so while Urza was able to survive thanks to his spark being an overpowered pre-mending spark. As much as I WANT Elspeth to survive, there's a good chance she's dead. She didn't just "jump on the grenade" she jumped on the nuke.
Also, of course Tamiyo took more effort to compleat than the others, she was the "proof of concept" it likely took Jin all that because no one had ever compleated a planeswalker while keeping their soul and spark intact before. I theorize that after figuring out how to do so, Jin was likely able to use the data he gathered to modify the virus strain carried in the oil.
Tibalt likely isn't dead, or at the very least he'll be undead in March of the Machine, after all, Venser returned as a compleat zombie.

On your thoughts on the oil now changing planeswalkers so easily, here is my opinion.
Phyrexians share memories, consume, adapt, and evolve. Glistening oil (aka Phyrexian oil, Ichor) adapts its phyresis process over time making it more potent from species to species and metal to metal. But it takes a lot of time and a lot of failed attempts as it only makes changes ever so slightly in its attempts. Jin-Gitaxias does research, develops tools and creates devices to aid the oil in its phyresis attempts. He does this to increase the success rate and proficiency of the oil Once the oil succeeds, it no longer needs the device or tool to aid it in the same manner. It learns how to do the changes the device or tool made itself. This theory explains everything. Tibalt becomes a Phyrexian with the current oil in him because of the shared memory and how now planeswalkers can be changed unaided by tools and devices.

Here's an idea, Realm Breaker connects New Phyrexia to Innistrad, home of the indisputably toughest SOBs in the multiverse. Knowing their fate if they don't work together, the humans, angels, werewolves, vampires and even the stitchers and ghoulcallers join forces to hold back the waves of completed horrors. Their frontline holds far longer than the Phyrexians and even our heroes expect it to, but eventually they do begin to falter, which is when Liesa, along with her small but devoted flock, go to the Ashmouth to gather the most unlikely of allies, the demons. She convinces them to join the fight on Innistrad's behalf, they agree and with Liesa's power, they are able to temporarily take physical form. When they arrive, the battle actually swings in Innistrad's favor as the demons and devils begin to shred the Phyrexian's frontline, and Sigarda and Liesa get a moment of reconciliation , however, this doesn't last long. The demons are fighting on borrowed time and they do eventually fade back to the Ashmouth. The Phyrexians once again start gaining ground, and to ensure their victory, Elesh Norn sends a completed planeswalker into the heart of the fight... she sends Tamiyo. While on the front, Tamiyo receives a message that actually breaks her connection to Phyrexia, and, in an ironic moment of sanity, Tamiyo casts a spell shared with her by none other than Emrakul. The eldrazi titan erupts from the moon, which is now a silvery rift that hangs over the battlefield. Having had time to recover after her last incursion on the plane, she's actually accompanied by a substantial brood. The hearts of all of Innistrad stop in that moment, seeing the greatest threat they've ever faced suddenly reappear, but something else has firmly grasped Emrakul's attention... Realm Breaker. Drawn in by the abundance of mana pouring out from New Phyrexia, she flies over the frontline. Tamiyo's last thought is of total defiance of Elesh Norn, right before she gives in to Emrakul's influence, tentacles bursting out from the metal shell covering her body, spawning from the last shreds of flesh within her, she is now apart of Emrakul. Other Phyrexian's suffer a similar fate as the titan moves through the rift and begins to tear through the Phyrexian forces that can't be converted. Her presence eventually warps reality enough to cut off Realm Breaker's connections to the other planes, trapping the Phyrexians in with her as their whole world begins to crumble, Elesh Norn gets torn apart by her former "child" Tamiyo as Emrakul share's with her the promised end she brings, breaking Norn both mentally and physically. Our heroes are left on Innistrad, the rift to New Phyrexia having closed and the moon returning to normal. The angels, Elspeth, who is now also an angel, and Melira, who's now stuck in Innistrad, start purifying the glistening oil that remains and the people celebrate their hard won victory, unconventional as it was. Elspeth and the other remaining planeswalkers know however that their work isn't done, as Innistrad wasn't the only plane attacked, and even being cut off from the collective, those surviving Phyrexians are still a threat. That said, they've won, and this story ends with a tremendous sense of hope.
Just a quick idea of a scenario I'd like to see in the future.

The way I see it, the process of completion works probably the same way as how vaccines were created. In the beginning, the process was slow as the method of how to do it was first discovered. But once the method was proven effective, Jin-Gitaxious most likely found a way to streamline the process, and incorporate it into the oil, which means it also worked retroactively on Tibalt somehow. That's my guess, thanks so much for sharing the stories!

I've heard the point that "Urza survived the blast" come up a couple times but I think the biggest issue with that is that the blast is what SPARKED him. He became an Old-Walker in the instant, which was akin to a god and was a being literally made of pure energy assuming whatever shape the consciousness was most comfortable with (as far as my memory and understanding goes). It's less likely that he actually would have survived if not for the fact that at the same time he also became a god-like reality-warping being with two supped up powerstones for eyes.

I do have to say - this set makes Phyrexians way too like classic zombies. Dead walkers become compleated (Nahiri and Jace), getting any Phyrexian oil in you automatically compleats you, even if you are a Planeswalker, etc.
I think they were just kinda playing fast and loose with the lore, especially given that just a couple sets ago we saw the compleation of Tamiyo as a whole process. I take the point that maybe they improved the oil (though that wouldn't be so machine orthodox), but I kinda think they just wanted Zombie style infection.

In the story Tezzeret remarks of traveling dozens of planes and seeing each instantaneously subsumed by the world tree of Phyrexia. It's not just a few branches and minor infection this realmbreaker has done what Yawgmoth only dreamed of. Even Kamigawa has the initial crack of infection. The only plane that seems to be unaffected was Tezzeret's old lair which is one of the coolest call backs of all time right down to the glass sand.

Think about it, the inhabitants of a plane are not bother by planes natural hazards, Vedalken of Mirrordin do not suffer mercury poisoning despite living right in the middle of the quicksilver sea. The natives tolerance for those things that are normal to the plane but hazardous elsewhere are granted to planeswalker when they travel into a plane(so Tezzeret was also immune to mercury poisoning) so it makes sense that they also get the weaknesses of the natives and Mirrians are extra vunerable to Oil.

Kaya and Saheeli literally invented a device that can pull the soul of a planeswalker out of their body in the form of the temporal anchor. • @mesachi0640
    @mesachi0640 ปีที่แล้ว

This is how they were compleated so fast.
When a living being come in contact with the oil, they begin being influenced by it. The oil also begin converting flesh into metal (and vice-versa). It is a relatively slow process called Phyresis. Phyresis alone results in the more normal-looking Phyrexians.
Ideally, the Phyrexians will force a being to go through a more invasive, surgical procedure to replace biological parts with artifice. This can be done to either a still "pure" being or someone already under Phyresis. Such procedure allows for more radical modifications.
When either process is finished, the new Phyrexian being is considered Compleat.
    ---
Post-mending Planeswalkers are not immune to Phyresis. Is just that the final, Compleat result of it causes the being to lose their soul, and the spark is housed in the soul. That is, until Gitaxias developed a way around it (apparently, by having the Reality Chip tether the victim's soul during the surgery). Phyresis through the oil alone must still cause loss of spark, but again it is the slower process and the Praetors presumably got to all of them in time.
Old walkers were immune because they didn't really have a body. Their body was projected by their spark, and so it couldn't be altered by oil or surgery.
Modern walkers have actual physical bodies that are just as organical as anyone else's. During the original Scars of Mirrodin block, the main walkers *became* immune in some way (Elspeth, Koth and Venser through Melira's magic, Tezzeret through an inoculation Bolas gave him). Because Karn got both Venser's spark and the immunity at the same time, people thought the spark was what saved him from Phyresis/Compleation, but it was Melira's magic again.
During the current story, the Planeswalker strike team was in a rush, and got divided when they arrived. So many where captured while alone, and others got tainted by the oil and couldn't be saved in time.

  • @Powershade117
    @Powershade117 ปีที่แล้ว

Okay hear me out...but I do think that the theory that the oil is now more potent works, even with acknowledging Tibalt. Let's look at Kaldheim, where Vorinclex planted the seed within him. Tibalt was infected before the events of Kaldheim's story took place and yet he wasn't compleated in the slightest. He showed no signs of any consequences...because the oil within him was not strong enough. His planeswalker spark was still enough to keep it at bay...keeping it as just a seed, just as Vorinclex had said.
Now jump to Kamigawa, where Jin-Gitaxias managed to compleat the first planeswalker using the reality chip, special surgery, and likely some phyrexian oil in the process. This breakthrough is HUGE and one that Jin-Gitaxias would want to put all resources on deck to improve upon it. He's also got a new vessel from which to draw samples from, that being Tamiyo herself. With her compleation, the oil inside her was likely different, altered, and perhaps even enhanced because she is a planeswalker. If this is the case, and with Jin-Gitaxias himself at the forefront of this research, it makes sense that he could make such vast improvements to the glistening oil thanks to Tamiyo's corrupted blood.
It is sad that this all happened off screen, but I theorize that Tibalt eventually sought out Vorinclex to make good on his promise. However, poor Tibalt didn't realize that Jin-Gitaxias had succeeded in improving the oil...and so Vorinclex shows the half-devil why he is not a Praetor to be trifled with. I can envision a hunt and a battle ensuing, only for Vorinclex to repeat what he did on Kaldheim, only this time with Jin-Gitaxias's improvements. Now instead of a dormant seed, Phyresis spreads rapidly throughout Tibalt's body. Perhaps he was even patient zero for Jin-Gitaxias's tests of the new oil. With Tibalt's compleation, his theories would have been proven correct and "the great work" would continue as they began churning out more and more of this stronger oil.
Long-winded, but I couldn't stop myself from adding a little dramatic flare. So yeah, I think it still lines up for the oil being improved and Tibalt just got another dose later.

I just want my golgari gurls back... and Nahiri too...
As for surviving the blast of the Sylex, Elspeth is gonna survive for plot purpoises, but keep in mind that Urza survived by igniting his spark in the pre-mending era, aka, becoming a multidimensional over-god.

🤔Why not have a clean slate? Why not kill Jace?
Their so-called beloved "central" character no longer aligns with WOTC's join-or-die diversity quota. Jace is a white male - which is clearly problematic for a woke-facing mega-corp like Hasbro. Kaya and Teferi are WOTC's newly crowned current-gen micky mouse duo. Get used to it.
Ironically this version of The Phyrexians epitomize exactly what the woke agenda is, it's a compleation process and we (the consumer) are expected to submit.
(Explanation for my controversial/awful comment: I've sadly become cynical about fiction and storywriting in this era, where everything is shaded by some virtue-signaling agenda. As individual characters I think both Kaya and Teferi are fine and should be involved - however this storyline shows beyond all doubt that Kaya's inclusion is absolutely intended to come at the cost of pushing Jace aside. IMHO)

I agree that this is at least some cosequences and not the weird War of the Spark tease we got with everyone dying and it was only Gideon, Domri and Dack.
Yeah a lot of Walkers died or got chased in the aftermath but only Dovin got killed as a result and Ugin and Bolas are still alive but chilling in the Meditation Realm.
I just hope they don't rewind that decision and we got stuck with consequences and a change in the story!
Because the only thing that really happend since War that was notworthy was maybe Jaya dying and that's it?
My oppinion on the story is that WotC story department needs more time to flesh out stuff at the moment, we are rushing stuff and got the opposite which we had with the block format of worlds having too little time to breath and develope.
This leaves us with a lot of open questions and story threats dangeling around.
Oh! And my biggest pet peeve is to hate on that we need a new Walker on every darn plane! Was I happy to see Streets NOT introducing another new Walker we need to keep up with! :D

Tamiyos compleation is a "flash" which could imply the speed at which it happens considering in Neon she was take 4/5 in and compleated by the end.

I think Tibalt got infected on Kaldheim, and the oil quickly installed in his mind, he became slowly attracted to Phyrexia, got there to get phyrexianised the ''classic'' way, and got compleated by the attraction of the glistening oil

Look, there's no way that Elspeth is really gone, cause they definitely would have given her the card and not the wanderer (who is in the story for about 15 seconds).
That said, Elspeth straight up killing Jace is fantastic. Absolutely worth not resetting time

While it doesn't explain Tibalt, yes it was actually put out there that Jin-Gitaxias made the oil more potent, which is why the new Melira can't prevent poison all together, just diminish its effects.

My theory is that when Tibalt temporarily became a god he lost his spark. So when he opened the portal, it caused his DNA to slowly shift between each world and since he connected to New Phyrexia, it allowed the oil to course through his body since it resides in everything infected. 🤔

It feels like the completetion needed death (except with how lukka turned). Nahiri could have had that artery slashed in her neck which gave a slow death and she may not have turned till she basically killed herself. So maybe death is the key trigger.

Since planes are all connected now, please remember there's one planeswalker who can alter or nudge fate and manipulate destiny out of childish whims, she can though not confirmed, can alter reality too - Aminatou, the Fateshifter. This child can literally throw a simple tantrum and erase phyrexians from existence (it is said that her power can easily destroy existence), if that happens, poor Norn, defeated by a child, lolz

Did anyone else think that Kaya and Kaito acted extremely dumb at the end? Felt really frustrating to reading how so many favorite characters lost their lives and were compleated only for those two to sabotage the mission in the end simply because they don't know how the blast from the Sylex might affect the other planes. To me it seemed like either you risk it all and activate the Sylex or you watch the rest of the mutliverse become one with Phyrexia.
I do understand that this is all part of the story plan because now we'll get to see so many other characters join the fight and also cool phyrexians from different planes (I want to see infected from Innistrad and Amonkhet) but there were better ways to make the good guys lose imo.

Elspeth might live for plot reasons, but lets clear the facts. Urza didn't survive his sylex blast he Planes walked out of the explosion as his Old walker spark ignited. So as basically a god he dodged the blast altogether, where as Elspeth jumped out the window bomb in hand

I'm pretty sure the planeswalkers are just being compleated so quickly because that's the pacing they need to tell the story in 5 articles. It's less tense than being forcibly dragged into surgery, and there's no real explanation, but I guess they really wanted to show the compleated planeswalkers "on screen" ASAP.

So the Sylex was detonated in the blind eternities?
    Where the eldrazi titans live?
Out of the 7 compleated planeswalkers, 4 have personally helped deafeat/imprison the eldrazi. And out of them, 2 have had a direct mental connection with Emrakul (Tamiyo got possessed and Jace played mind chess with her.)
I just really miss the eldrazi okay

I am truly curious to know what's going to happen next. Will the complete planeswalkers stay completed? will they have to be killed? will there be some way to save them? NGL I would love to see something where they can't like. "Save" them, meaning that they are totally de-phyrexianized. But I WOULD love to see a way to free them from the influence of the praetors and have them continue on... Maybe needing to live with and wrestle with the weight of what they did while under the control of the Mother of Machines.
