Iv got a 1080ti,i7 7700k and 32gb of ram and this game was almost unusable even jumping and stuttering whilst loading and even on lowest settings across the board was garbage ..but still the immersion and graphics in pc mode kept me trying everything I could including upping clock speeds to no avail but youtube brought me here while I was researching upgrading my gpu and cpu ..but WOW after following this guide its running smooth I can turn my head smoothly without it freezing..absolutely stunning game..iv literally saved a fortune on upgrades ..thankyou to everyone involved
Heck’s yeah! So happy to hear that! I wish this was a tad simpler and more plug and play but with so many variables from pc hardware, hmd hardware, software, settings, I can only imagine how hard it is to make software this complex to run perfect on everyone’s system. But so happy you are enjoying the sim!
Thanks for your help. Im a Quest 2 owner and was getting increasing confused with all this WMR/Open XR/Runtime and Developer Apps/Steam VR settings. Your guide and walk through is the clearest advice available and I'm now up and running and smooth with medium settings on my fairly weak RTX 2060.
Happy to hear! That’s why I made it. I’ve been in VR beta and found some info a bit confusing until I read more and tweaked my setup a bit. In this video, I put as much info as I could together, to help as many veteran VR and new VR pilots as possible across the different headsets and it also covers all PC builds since it isn’t specific to just one. Thanks for the feedback!
Thanks man! Quest 2 owner here, and I bought MSFS with no intention of playing in VR since I thought my 2070 Super wouldn’t be able to handle it. I followed your steps, set the graphics quality to a mix of low to medium, and now everything is running smooth and looks great. Such a bonus since I didn’t think this would be possible. Cheers!
Hi therre! Many thanks for this excellent guide! Two weeks of Oculus Quest 2 ownership and finally got VR mode working. Was getting to the end of my teather until your video. I''m blown away by the A320 cockpit. Amazing! Thanks again. 😉~Rm
I wanted to say thank you for the thorough and concise instructions as this process is confusing. I was able to successfully enable VR using my Quest 2 (via link cable and air link) using the Games Store version of FS2020 after being directly told it would not work. I appreciate your efforts and this will be my go-to video if anyone asks in the future. Kudos!
have you got a warping projection on your rift s when moving you head side to side ? my rift s and quest constantly gets a warping of the menu and in the sim. it is driving me crazy.. but i don't get that warping in my valve index headset.
@@blackhero911 No I cant say I do get that. I know they talk about the black boxes you can get around the images but that can be fixed activating the Beta option in your Oculus menu.
Thank you for posting this. I am about to make it my default link to share when people ask me questions about MSFS VR. As far as AMD "equivalent" I would recommend no less than an RX 480, which has 8 GB VRAM. Incidentally, I did NOT have to tell it where my Open XR was. It was automatically recognized. I did not need to go into regedit to mess with stuff. I have no idea why? I did however have to opt into public test channel to solve the FOV Stencil issue.
Ah, thanks! Ok so I’m getting closer to understanding it but so many variables change amongst users it’s hard to pin point what’s causing some users to need to add that. I Should have mentioned the stencil tip for the oculus rift users! Good point! Thanks!!
Thanks man! I know it’s a lot of information and it can be overwhelming. Once you get VR working properly it’s live changing haha. I’m just trying to help out all the new VR folks. I’ll have a new video today or early tomorrow with the HP Reverb G2 with a bush flight out of Juno Alaska and man, I was getting 35-45 FPS. It was insane!
That close encounter with the heavy on approach to MIA at the beginning of this video was shocking. I was expecting the tower to tell you to call them after you land to yell at you about a pilot deviation. It's a good thing the FAA can't pull your ticket in a sim. But it's an awesome thing that a sim can look good enough to make you worry about it.
Right? haha I will have to file a NEMAC after that and report the seat to be changed my maintenance since it is now stained lol! This sim truly is a blast!
Hi, Jose. Thank you for the great video. I've been having issues to where one day mine works, next day it doesn't. So needless to say, pretty frustrating. BUT, first, want to say sincerely thank you for what you do working to help keeping the airways safe. You are certainly amongst the elite and I truly appreciate what you and all of the ATCers do. Question : Are you at TPA or MIA? I seen your header on main page saying one location versus this specific video. Stay safe and God bless. -- Matthew
Great video thanks! .. I'm new to flight sims but one thing ive noticed since getting hooked on flight simming is that the community is so helpful ! Wow awesome 😀👍, certainly a lot of info out there to digest whilst waiting for my G2 to arrive lol
A massive thank you for this I had my Quest 2 for 2 days and I couldn't get it to work until I watched this Just done my first VR flight and its a game changer. I hope you don't mind if I post this in a Facebook group as there are others really struggling to sort this out
Please share! Glad it helped! Check out the next video with the Powerful Cub, it’s freeware. Download it and go to PAJN or PAHO and check out the glaciers! - don’t use live weather as the snow covers the glaciers lol
Great info glad I found your channel. I've been on VR Flightsim Guys channel all along so had seen his info on setting this up but just getting around to doing it
I'm a bit surprised that lowering the resolution makes so much difference on the 3090, with all its memory bandwidth and rasterisation performance. I wouldn't be surprised if there are some software optimisations still to come. With 3090+5900X+G2 I've been leaving OpenXR render scale at 100 and putting the game render scale on 80 and getting 30fps (which is ok with the 2-frame motion smoothing). I will try out your settings next. But I can get 70-80fps in 2D at 1440P in the same scenarios at Ultra graphics.
Hey Rob thanks for that comment, give this a shot.... Try Open XR render scale at 50%, disable reprojection and then set in game render scale to 100%. You have a powerful system, please let me know how those settings run for you! PS- MINE ARE AMAZING. I almost have everything on ultra. its crazy.
btw, fwiw, I already tried 70 and 70 and the performance was a bit better, like 40-43 fps instead of 30, but I thought (for VFR in the Cessna 172) that render scale of 100 and game scale of 70-80 (i.e. lowering to 70 if 30fps not possible at 80) looked better. But yes, will try this new trick next.
@@theVRpilot Ok. Version 1.12.13.0. Sat at Heathrow 27R at midday, clear skies in a Cessna 152. With OpenXR at 100% and the game at 70%, I'm seeing app GPU frame times of 23.5ms, giving me a steady 30fps with motion projection up to 90fps. With your settings, Open XR 50%, game 100%, motion reprojection off, I get 48fps. It's actually better than that sounds but I don't like the jerky lateral movement much. Turning motion reprojection back on seems to have enough cost that my GPU frame time goes back up to 22ms and I get 30fps again, but at least it's smooth. I have managed to get 45fps in certain situtaions, probably at higher altitude in the countryside.
So a few things have to be taken into consideration. What headset they are using. Index, G2 Pimax push out more pixels and will lower results. Hardware, 9700k OC to 5.0, ASUS ROG STRIX 3090, 970 EVO M.2 ssd, 4000mhz hyperx DDR4 ram. Software versions and settings drivers. Are they running OPENXR, or not, what RENDER scale are they running, it’s a huge killer for high end HMDs. But yeah I am able to run some, what I think, are really HIGH settings especially over miami. I’ll have the full flight premier tomorrow morning over miami answering questions in chat.
I have the Thrustmaster rudder pedals and joystick, but I want to switch to a yoke. I know how to fly, but I do this for fun so I need something simple to just get out there and fly. What yoke do you recommend? I am using the original Quest linked to a pretty strong computer. I need setup to be simple. Thank you in advance.
So you are saying remove Community folder play in VR, then shut down, put the folder back in and try again and it will be better... hmm... ??? I will try it. Which Nvidia Drivers are you using with your Quest 2? I find my quest 2 as some earlier comments to be very crisp in the cockpit but as i look further away in the distance I too find it kinda blurry.... Also in Cessna 172 (NOT G1000) when i move my head side to side I find it kinda jerky in fact gauges will double draw ... surprisingly i find in A320 Cockpit to be much smoother then Cessna better overall performance and everything. Thanks
Yes, I’ll try to find the post MS made. But moving the community folder out and possibly clearing certain cache folders does help specifically after new updates come out. Boot up the sim. Fly once. Exit and then bring the community folder back. I’m using the latest Nvidia drivers As of today. I haven’t flown the Cessna but I do suffer a bit in the b787. What headset are you running?
@@theVRpilot I have 10850k @ 5.2Ghz with 3080 and 32GB of Ram i run the render scale at 100 i will be playing with more options yet as i though you were using some special NVIDIA drivers saw lots of talk on the flight sim forum that newest drivers cause stutters etc.. so i was surprised that you didn't notice any, but again in A320 you don't see it as bad as in the Cessna I was surprised that you using most recent ones there i found recommendations for 456.38 which are pretty old.. so i will try these and recent ones see if there are any changes for the better or worst. Currently i use 457.09 as they gave me very nice performance on 4k so i figure since it ain't broken don't fix it now for VR i might try other options :)
So after doing some more testing disabling AWS in oculus debug tool help quite a bit with the jerky/jumping view, have to do it every time as this option does not stick, can't just disable and forget it but definitionally helps.
Great video, great resource. I'm confused about one thing - I run a Quest 2 with link, and the sim was purchased from the MS store. Do I need to run Steam VR as well? If it would be beneficial to do so, what is the sequence of steps that I should be doing to get it running with the sim and the oculus software that I already use? I already have Steam VR installed so I don't need help with that aspect, just whether I *should* be using it for performance increase or stability. Thanks!
Hey great vid - did everything you said but my head set (Quest 2) is still not being detected. In the System Status Page I get nothing below the API VERSION line... It only says exception ... *The active OpenXR runtime does not have a head mounted display system available. You may need to setup your XR platform or plug in your headset* I’m using virtual desktop - what do I need to do? No headset is detected within Flight sim on my PC through Xbox game pass
Hi Great videos. Can you advise if you are using oculus debug or oculus tray tool to change the bitrate for link? Are you also maxing out the slider in oculus quest2 graphics section? You running 80 or 90hz for quest 2? Thank you.
Thanks SPEEDVR! I have not touched Oculus Debug or Tray Tool at all. 90HZ for quest 2. and what do you mean maxing out slider in oculus quest 2 graphics section?
@@theVRpilot In oculus software under devices. Click oculus quest2 Scroll down to graphics preferences You can select 72,80,90hz and the resolution. Are you on auto or do you have the slider maxed out?
Thanks for posting this theVRpilot - I have almost the exact same system as you except for the CPU. With your Quest 2, can you tell me what your Oculus app Rendering Resolution is currently set to (under Graphics Preferences)? Is it 1.0x (3440 x 1744) or higher than that?
Glad I could help! Sure I can check in a little bit and tell you..... but I can tell you now, I did not change anything, it was set to default value from just plug and play.
Hey! I just want to ask if you need to have all the equipment (the pedals, wheel or what ever it’s called) too, or you can hold the virtual wheel in game.
I have no problems running ANY PCVR games using Virtual Desktop EXCEPT Microsoft Flight Simulator! My headset is not detected when I try to switch to VR! I have a Quest 1 and a pretty capable PC so I don’t want to hear crap like I need to upgrade! It should work with my Quest 1 because is not the headset running the game. Do you think if I follow these instructions I will be able to run the game? Its so frustrating I bought the sim just for the VR option I was waiting for so long and its so dissapointing! I can see the game, just like any other VR game in my Steam VR home but when I launch all I can see in VR is the panel saying “Next Up” on top of MFSIm logo. It just stays like this forever. Why all other games are working, including Half Life Alyx and Virtual Desktop but this sim doesn’t? I have a 5Ghz router so it can’t be the speed, also PC is directly connected to the router by the cable. What do you suggest? I love the sim but I can’t enjoy it in VR! Anyway, I will try follow these steps and see if this works.Subscribed.
Steve I think others have mentioned this in the Facebook group, go in and do a search if not post, the community has been extremely helpful and they are very kind.
@@theVRpilot thanks for reply, yup I think I found the answer in your comment section. I run it in theater mode than pressed ctrl+tab, sounds silly but thats how it actually launched :)) good thing I checked before trying messing with more advanced settings. Thank you!!
Really nice guide ! Unfortunately even with it I struggle with my 3080 and 5600x. I'm between 20 and 30 fps on a quest 1 which should not be so demanding. The problem is even if I set everything to low, I'm still between 20 and 30, which is not the case in 4k for example. Any idea what is bottlenecking specifically in VR ?
I def suggest join the FB group lots of help there.... But you know I find I have a few issues but it’s more because I go back and forth between G2 and Q2 to test different settings lol Honestly my 9700k and 3090 have me at about 30fps. I often find changing the graphics does not change my FPS much lol. It’s the weirdest thing. But right not there are so many variables, hardware, software, sim settings. Something about VR even on Iow FPS don’t massively increase it’s probably because certain things are still taxing the system and also the sim isn’t fully optimized. Are you using oculus tray tool?
@@theVRpilot I just joined the FB group thanks 😄 Yes I use OTT mainly to monitor fps, and yes it's very strange how fps are not very different between everything in low or in ultra. I'm wondering if changing in the sim sometimes does not impact as much as it should ?
Hello Jose. Since you have both headsets and I was wondering. Is it worth to upgrade to the reverb G2 from the quest 2. I have a quest 2 but I am having problems finding the perfect settings. Is the G2 going to be better for flight sim purposes then quest 2 and also future proof. I only have a 1080ti and a ryzen 7 3700X. Is it worth to keep the quest 2 for now and put the money toward a 3090 and higher Ryzen 9 CPU or get a G2? Will the G2 make the world of a difference?
Hey Marc, thanks for hanging out live in chat but I will recap what we said in case others read it here... IF you can afford the G2, it is a good move as long as you FIT within the IPD with is 60-68 adjustable via hardware. You might be able to use it if you are one millimeter on either end but YMMV. The Oculus Quest 2 is STUNNING, and if you are OK with the FB rules and requirements, then it is not a bad choice. It is difficult to describe the clarity the G2 provides, and I feel that many people would TRULY love it but the hardware configuration and software isnt quite there for it. RTX3090 is ready, but we really need DX12 and DLSS 2.1 VR. If you want to future proof the G2 is a good move as lowering the render scaling and setting a custom resolution as shown in the tutorial will help make it absolutely enjoyable at surprisingly minimal visual cost. But if you have a Quest 2, or it is easier for you to pick up, then I suggest it is a good option if the other headset on the market dont fit your needs.
My Quest 2 settings that has a good balance of performance and visual quality: - Oculus app render resolution: 1.0x - Oculus app refresh rate: 90hz - Oculus debug tool: ASW off and bitrate at 150 In-game, set resolution scale to 100 and all other settings are set the same as theVRPilot. Hardware: rtx3090 with mild OC, Ryzen 7 5800x, 32GB RAM and game installed on m.2 NVME SSD FPS stays between 30-45 fps depending on airport and scenery. I had to turn ASW off otherwise to remove the warping as it just made me sick. Not quite buttery smooth but at least playable without throwing up. This game needs a PC from 2025 to really shine in VR 🤣
Oh and I'm running the MS store version of the game, not Steam. For what I can tell from my research the game's performance tanks in Steam VR + OpenXR compared to Oculus + OpenXR. I suspect if you have the Steam version of MSFS you can still force it to run using the Oculus + OpenXR path by following the registry editor instructions for Oculus devices. Unfortunately I can't verify this but if someone does please reply to this thread!
@MRV possibly. I’ll try again. I haven’t ran oculus since I did a reinstall of windows and MSFS. I found I can now run my reverb g2 at 100% open xr and 100 render scale with high settings and sometimes ultra with normal 30fps. It’s nuts how good the g2 looks!
@@theVRpilot since I posted my comment I have also upgraded to a Reverb G2 and running 100% OpenXR and MSFS render scale at high / ultra settings. The sharpness of the G2 over the Quest 2 even with 1.7x rendering is simply insane - everything looks so sharp! Plus I'm getting 30-40fps at those crazy settings with motion reprojection off. I'm amazed how good the G2 is over the Quest 2 as I can push more pixels and hence quality for the same cost in performance.
I had to downgrade to driver version 457.51 however to get smooth performance. 460 and above has too much stuttering to make it playable. This is for the rtx3000 series cards.
Many thank for this guide and marry Christmas :) Have you been able to get it working with Virtual Desktop Wireless for the Quest 2? Maybe you could make a guide? The Link Cable breaks my immersion :(
I have heard other users got this to work, I tried briefly but could not. I will keep trying and post back here if I do! The downside is, a two hour flight limit haha. I have this in my setup, I would say it’s inexpensive and helped my immersion because it got ride of the cable from touching me. Great video I seem to be getting a smother less stutter when render scaling is on 170 with great performance why are there no videos showing this higher than 100 should I drop the render down cheers

These settings work flawless with my new hp reverb g2. The only thing that bothers me now is the automatic start of the Mixed Reality Portal in Windows when I want to fly. Is there any way to turn this off?
That is something that has bothered me too for a long time. I have my HMD USB next to me on a 7 power USB strip that has buttons to enable or disable individual ports so I disable it that way, but yeah if your are flying its its another window that is open in the background. WIsh it was more straight forward but yeah. Thanks for the comment!
@@theVRpilot Strange that there is still no solution for this. It's so annoying and you can't shut this down. It always starts up automatically, so I use 2 applications at the same time with the VR glasses ... Thank you for your quick response!
@@DDheliservice Yeah, so again, to prevent it from starting up with windows I simply hit the button on my Powered 7 USB on my sim pit. But I know the struggle with having multiple windows open. Any recommendations for my setup? Ryzen 5 3600X + RTX 2080 Super + Lenovo Explorer. I'm fairly new to VR so still getting used to all this stuff. Currently I have OpenXR set to 80%.
I loved that headset when I had it. It brought me back to VR flying. Have you tried 100% custom scale (or default) in OpenXR and then adjusting the render scale in game? It might look better you should be able to handle the normal resolution of the Lenovo explorer. Let me know. The high resolution headsets really do benefit from the reduce resolution.
Now, with all the optimised settings render scale, openxr, debug tools, etc...) which VR headset between Quest 2 and Reverb G2 give you the most clarity and immersion in fs 2020 ?
The G2 still looks wayyyy better. It helps future proof too. And runs amazing in most other sims and games. G2 if you have the coin, but Q2 if you rather not wait and save $300

have you gotten any screen warping on your oculus quest when you move your head side to side when in menu and in the sim? there is a warping projection on my rift s but not on my valve index.

@@theVRpilot yes that is what I am saying. On both the oculus rift s and my quest there is an unnatural warp movement when I am moving my head side to side in vr. You know that this doesn't happen when flying x-plane 11 or DCS in vr. Have you solve this problem? The hp reverb g2 doesn't do it in x-plane 11
Not yet but I think it has something to do with two VR headsets. My issue didn’t start until I started using the oculus quest 2, prior to that I was ok. I noticed you too have two headsets. Hmmm.
@@theVRpilot that makes sense. So it started wgen you connected or use two different headsets. Crazy. This doesn't happen when flying x-plane with 2 different headsets. You said it happens when you are using your hp reverb g2?
For Quest 1 owners, Link isn't supported in Public Beta, thus you can't benefit from OpenXR improvements. With a beefy PC it's still playable, you get a 36fps lock (half the refresh rate of the Quest) but Oculus software doesn't smooth it the way OpenXR would, head movement is smooth but landscape stutters.
Its totally stopped me getting into VR at all following these steps any idea how to reverse the process back to using link instead of OpenXr because now when i click switch to VR absolutely nothing happens. Was working ok before i listened to this.
@@honeybadger9425 In the Oculus software, just disable the public beta in the settings, you should get back to V23 software which supports Link for Quest 1

Is there any way to record this in 3D so that we can see in our headsets what you see in yours? Basically a VR video, IN VR. :-) That would awesome to see!
I agree. I have thought of this! I think the “google cardboard” method works with My last tutorial. At the end of it I recorded a few flights but you see both the left and right eye. Very good. I had succeeded, but I had difficulty. Your video will certainly make it easier for anyone who has an Quest 2 oculus. Now I also enabled the oculus debug tool with the performance information ... here comes some information that I wanted to exchange with you and your followers. I get 45 fps for Quest 2 fixed, but the Performance Headroom is negative .. WELL NEGATIVE to tell you the truth .. around -70 ... but I see everything very smooth. Can anyone share the experience? Sorry for my English. Hugs
In addition .. I have a 10600K processor with 32GB of memory at 3900MHz and an RTX 2080 Super. I use 100% render scale with TAA and MID / HIGH sets. In the oculus debug tool, stock configurations, only the bitrate at 350. I can lower the entire render scale but in the oculus it is not possible 90HZ, but as stated earlier, everything looks very smooth even with 45 fixed by Quest 2.
I would really like your help. Where should I download the OPENXR for Oculus from? I need the Oculus one not the WMR one. Do I need to download it from Microsoft store or I can download it from the web browser? Please send me the download link.
Hey, I use WMR and it doesn't work. Im getting in the VR loading screen, while MSFS is black screened. After few seconds MSFS crashes. I tried it on MSFS Home screen and in game. Im using open XR. If I dont use open XR it doesn't crash but it doesnt track the VR, I tried to plug it in and out but didn't work aswell. I hope you or someone can help me, :) Rix.

Can you give me a little help? So I just got my oculus rift-s, installed it, got it working in MSFS2020, played with all the settings, lots of stutters which made it seem like my head was shaking uncontrollably, it wasn't - at least I hope. ;-) Anyway, I just set up to get into the beta and updated my oculus software BUT I play MSGS through Steam. Do I still edit the registry to the OpenXR location in the oculus folder even though the current reg is showing it going to a steam folder: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\SteamVR\steamxr_win64.json? I also see that there is a beta to enroll in for SteamVR should I do that as well (the reason I ask that is because on the linked page there is the "for other headset users" and I see Steam mentioned)? Thanks for the help and you got another subscriber. I'm new to the whole VR thing as I mainly picked it up for this sim.
I’m heading to work but my first response is if you are getting shaking or stutters, turn of ASW in the settings. I think it’s in steam VR. Lower render scale a bit too. If that doesn’t work I suggest you might get quicker responses in the FB group, join and post the question with ur PC specs. Everyone has been very helpful and a been superb group.
@@theVRpilot Just as an FYI I have bypassed SteamVR and it helps a ton. I was having both SteamVR and Oculus software working on top of each other so I was getting over-sampling, motion smoothing, etc. Once I had that done I was able to get some awesome performance and able to start tweaking my settings in game.
Did anyone notice that the scenery looks very blurry ? I have quest 2 still trying to configure it to get the best , but what I heard is that most of the great headset are blurry’ is it true ? Any solution ?
Do you find the cockpit clear and crisp but the scenery blurry? What is your render scale set to? I think I know what you mean. It isn’t 4K clear, but it is very nice. The Reverb G2 significantly improves in clarity, but still needs to be adjusted as its native 4k Resolution is still hard to render fully with even my RTX 3090.
@@theVRpilot render scale is 80 . Cockpit is clear. I can read the dials and text is a bit blurry but still can be read . However the outside world is too blurry specially the distant scenery it feels as if I someone has put lots of oil on the cockpit widow
@@mohdfarhan3655 yeah I agree. I just flew at 70 render scale with the quest 2 and had to go back to 100. It runs smooth for me. What about you? Does it drop in FPS? What GPU/CPU do u have?
A solution is to wait next VR device...With Pancake or metalens...5k panels ( around 15mp)... Indeed 4K 8,3mp Flat screen, your two eyes see those 8,3mp VS great 3D immersion with VR Headset... but G2 9,3mp are divided by 2...4,65mp per eye...and Quest 2's resolution 7,5mp same, so your two eyes see only 3,75mp 4k60fps flat screen require almost the same GPU/CPU effort per pixel than Quest 2 at 72fps...but the visual clarity can't reach the same level. Frenesl lens requiring a supersampling image to work ...good... New kind of lens won't need supersampling, it will save somme GPU/CPU performance.

I play MSFS2020 with my Quest 2 wirelessly using virtual desktop...before you fire up the game, open up virtual desktop in your headset to connect to your pc, open steam and turn on steamvr, once steamvr is open right click and scroll down to developer, enter this option and at the bottom there is the option to switch to steamxr , select this, exit and then fire up MSFS2020...works perfectly, no registry hack needed.
@@theVRpilot hi mate, yes, tried it yesterday with Half Life Alyx, works a treat, runs very smoothly, virtual desktop worked okay but I could never completely get rid of the stuttering. Airlink works really well for me, I've tried it with both fixed and dynamic resolution and it works a treat on both. MSFS2020 works just as well too I'm pleased to say. It's a bit of a game changer really because playing with a smooth experience means you're not getting irritated and/or motion sick. I do have a dedicated router wired to my pc purely for the Quest 2 . Cheers, Daz, aka coffeeguy
I have a pimax 5k+ running on a 9900k default clock speed 32 GB of ram 2080ti card. It sounds like Ill be looking at somewhat bland scenery ,or a beautiful sight with a stomach turning stuttering mess. Looks like it upgrade time!
Hello! Do you want to fly VR with pc? I would highly consider an HP reverb G2. It might require a bit more powerful computer. The quest 2 is a good/great alternative. Do you know much about VR/pc gaming?
To get my oculus s to work I had to uninstall all “Razor” software for my mouse and keyboard. The “Razor” software was crashing steam and causing suttering
When I make changes in open XR I leave WMR open and I leave MSFS VR open. I simply disable and enable VR in MSFS and the settings take. Although i have sometimes closed WMR just to make sure the changes take. Note: disable Vr is msfs before closing Mixed Reality Portal or it will close MSFS with it too.
For me , using the HP Reverb G2 it shakes about as though it is zooming to were I look , which is a horrible effect. Is this the same for anyone else ? Anyone know how to stop it ?
Check 12:20 under VR mode try to reset your cockpit focus. I am thinking maybe it might be stuck or something giving that zoomed in effect, which in turn might be super shakey? Join the Facebook group and try to take and post a screen shot if you can.

Two things Aaron. Update openxr through MS store for it to appear. Also try this, leave the custom resolution off, and adjust render scale in the game. Turn off/on reprojection to check to see if it smoothed out the gameplay. I run with it off.
@@theVRpilot I should have been more specific. I have a quest 2. Do I still need to install the openxr development tools or just do the registry settings?

True! I should. For this flight I chose to turn it off to give a better viewing experience, also everyone freaks out when it hovers around 30 FPS with a 3090. Lol It’s absolutely smooth. 30 is the new 45. Frame rates are double and it’s impressive how smooth it is. Recording VR is tricky, often what I see. Isn’t translated as smooth to the recording. But I’ll keep that in mind! Thanks for the feedback. I will have the full flight (no FPS sorry, that’s how I recorded it) coming online either later tonight or tomorrow.
@@theVRpilot Oculus quest 2 with high data cable. I only noticed the problem when I set the performance meter on oculus. And that explained the juddering.
Oh man yeah, you should be ok. Something sounds off. Have you tried lowering the in game render scale below 100? And do you have open XR enabled for oculus?
I have a Quest 2 and looking to do the exact opposite :) I hear that the G2 will still perform better than the Quest 2 if both were set to a similar resolution (e.g. to the Quest 2's native resolution of 1832x1920). This is because with the Quest 2 the video is first compressed, streamed to the headset via Oculus Link and USB 3.0, and then decompressed in the headset. The bitrate this is streamed at is set by the Oculus app which is 150Mbps by default (you can increase this however). All that compression/decompression adds tax to performance and you lose a tiny bit of fidelity as well. The G2 on the other hand is treated like a display connected by DisplayPort and so video is not streamed in the same way as it's done with the Quest 2. At native resolutions the Quest 2 will be faster as it only has 3.51megapixel (1832 x 1920) to render compared to 4.66megapixel (2160 x 2160) on the G2.
I think @tusitha makes some excellent points to consider. It’s a higher end display with more pixels and running at its similar to watching 1080p tv show on a 4k tv, it looks reaaaally good. I have had some amazing flights with the hp reverb g2, but the jest two keeps “performing” better although yes, not as clear. So I’m trying to figure out to make the G2 smooth all the time. Oliver is there a way for you to borrow or have a friend bring over their g2 or quest 2 headsets?
30fps = heaven ? In what universe :-) I don't get why is everyone praising the VR implementation. Clearly it is horrible and developers need to be reminded of it anywhere.
I’m simply sharing my opinion. What can I say? I’m enjoying it. 30FPS gets double with open xr to a fluid 60fps. Kinda like 45 to 90. So yeah. 30 is heaven. Lol, sorry man. If you don’t agree that’s ok.

Good point!

How would an RX 480 be equivalent performance wise, it's closer to a 1060-1070 than a 1080.

@@theVRpilot ok I am on it. Will report back, if not tonight, then in the next day or so.
btw, fwiw, I already tried 70 and 70 and the performance was a bit better, like 40-43 fps instead of 30, but I thought (for VFR in the Cessna 172) that render scale of 100 and game scale of 70-80 (i.e. lowering to 70 if 30fps not possible at 80) looked better.
How are you able to get some of the settings to high when people find it struggling even with RTX 3090 lol.

Thanks Shark! I’m excited to get other VR pilots enjoying the sim!

I haven’t flown the Cessna but I do suffer a bit in the b787.

Great video, great resource. I'm confused about one thing - I run a Quest 2 with link, and the sim was purchased from the MS store. Do I need to run Steam VR as well? In short no,you don’t need it, but it makes the immersion and experience so much better. Muscle memory helps you find the are while in VR.
But you know I find I have a few issues but it’s more because I go back and forth between G2 and Q2 to test different settings lol
Honestly my 9700k and 3090 have me at about 30fps.
@@theVRpilot I just joined the FB group thanks 😄
Yes I use OTT mainly to monitor fps, and yes it's very strange how fps are not very different between everything in low or in ultra.
@@theVRpilot any chance I could discuss with you over messenger or the FB group?
Yeah! Shoot me a message, I’ll keep n eye out for it

My Quest 2 settings that has a good balance of performance and visual quality:
- Oculus app render resolution: 1.0x
- Oculus app refresh rate: 90hz
- Oculus debug tool: ASW off and bitrate at 150
In-game, set resolution scale to 100 and all other settings are set the same as theVRPilot.
Hardware: rtx3090 with mild OC, Ryzen 7 5800x, 32GB RAM and game installed on m.2 NVME SSD
FPS stays between 30-45 fps depending on airport and scenery.
@@rideonaus I have heard Oculus + Open XR is better.... and to close steam VR if running the others.
Many thank for this guide and marry Christmas :)
Have you been able to get it working with Virtual Desktop Wireless for the Quest 2? Maybe you could make a guide? The Link Cable breaks my immersion :(
I have heard other users got this to work, I tried briefly but could not.
I will keep trying and post back here if I do!
The downside is, a two hour flight limit haha.
I have this in my setup, I would say it’s inexpensive and helped my immersion because it got ride of the cable from touching me.
It’s set up with my reverb g2, my main headset, but I could have used it for the quest 2.

The high resolution headsets really do benefit from the reduce resolution.
Now, with all the optimised settings render scale, openxr, debug tools, etc...) which VR headset between Quest 2 and Reverb G2 give you the most clarity and immersion in fs 2020 ?

For Quest 1 owners, Link isn't supported in Public Beta, thus you can't benefit from OpenXR improvements. It’s absolutely smooth.

My oculus headset can only achieve no more than 40 HZ even at the lowest setting. Unplayable.
Woah. What headset and PC specs?
@@theVRpilot Oculus quest 2 with high data cable. Intel Core i5 9400F Six-Core CPU, NVIDIA RTX 2060 6GB GPU, 16GB 3000MHz DDR4 RAM, 240GB I can play other oculus games at 90 HZ without any issues and with max settings. I only noticed the problem when I set the performance meter on oculus. And that explained the juddering.
Oh man yeah, you should be ok. Something sounds off.
Have you tried lowering the in game render scale below 100?
And do you have open XR enabled for oculus?
@@theVRpilot How do you enable open XR?

for msfs, which is better G2 or Quest2?
I have G2 but considering to replace it with Quest2 specifically for msfs with 3060ti
@@rideonaus thanks for that detailed response!!
Hard to explain unless you try it right?
Nice video, but this kids screaming in background 😬👎🏻
Imagine how surprised I was, I live alone on 3 acres and don’t have kids. Word is this house was built over an ancient burial ground.
Thanks for the feedback.
Hopefully the content was useful.
@@theVRpilot uff you don't have a kids, what a relief, there is nothing worse than having kids playing in the background
@@TWARDOWSKY. Sprits maybe?
I’m joking. I do have kids.
But note taken, for future content.
Thanks.
@@theVRpilot hapy to give you a constructive feedback.
But I still not able to run Windows mix on Quest. get error in Demo Scene "the active openxr runtime does not have a head-mounted display system available. You may need to set up your XR platform or plug in your headset."
PS. can you run WMR in Quest?
