@David Wiener don’t drink caffeine after 4pm if you want to sleep at 10-11, also take caffeine when you need it. It’ll both hit you harder and actually have an impact

I am a registered sleep technologist, monitoring/treating people for sleep issues for over 16 years. What bothers me after watching so many of these sleep videos is that so many physicians and research scientists who teach sleep do not address those who have neurological disorders, lung disorders, heart issues, etc that affect sleep. Public, it’s about quality sleep not just “sleeping”. If you’re over 40, it’s a must to undergo an in lab sleep study to address other issues. Many physicians barely touch upon these subjects unless you’re a sleep physician. Sleep medicine is sort of a “new discovery”.
this comment is right. quality sleep is more important than quantity sleep. I have terrible case of sleep apnea. I would sleep 10 hours and would stilll feel lethargic during the day. Once I found about CPAP machines, I was forever grateful. I can sleep 6, 7 hours and i would be energetic for the entire day. I noticed I was able to focus more, retain information and less depressed

I'm 26 and I study radiology. My GPA is currently 3.81 and last semester I took 15 credits. It was honestly brutal but sleep is so important. I made sure i got my 8 hours of sleep every single night and it paid off. I feel the reading itself is something a lot of people don't really understand how to do efficiently for many of the classes I took. All of which were remote and online classes. If I had an introductory paragraph which mentioned 5 different things such as nephrons, glomerular capsule, distal tubule, proximal tubule, etc. I would know that the next 5 paragraphs would be about that, in roughly that order. Typically, each subsequent paragraph would start by introducing what it is (nephron), where it's located, what the function is, how it functions, in almost that exact order. From that alone I'm able to skip through all of the filler words to find specifically what I'm looking for. Books do not tell you how something functions before telling you the function. The level of organization in text books is very well thought out. From simply understanding how to read my books I'm much more efficient in finding and summarizing the info I need and better able to make the flash cards I need. My studying technique was mostly just that, summarizing everything I'm reading into the primary components of interrogatives. (what, where, how, why, when) and I'm able to create nearly 5 flash cards for every single term I've learned. In a study session where I have over 75 terms, that's roughly 400 flash cards. I then go 30 at a time. I learn 30, I move on to the next 30. Once I get through them all, I put them all together and do it all as a single unit. Any cards I'm missing, I make more flash cards of that term so I see it more often. This is how I studied my classes, and it's also how I wrote all of my research papers and essays getting an A on every single one.
We watch your videos in our English calss. I'm from Russia and our professors decided to include your videos about universities into our curriculum! Thank you😌
As someone who feels unproductive because I sleep 10-12 hours a night on average and has since forever...this is so comforting. I always feel like sleeping as much as I do makes it so I have to rush everywhere because most of the world only gets 7-9 hours of rest every night. I've always felt weirdly guilty and lazy about my natural sleeping inclinations, so it's good to know that they're not bad at all, actually. When I wake up after a long night's sleep, I'm IMMEDIATELY productive, no need for coffee and a shower and all these wake-up chores. Cool to know Usain Bolt is the same way.

Yeah, but there is a difference between someone who puts a huge load on their body getting enough sleep, and an average person. At a certain point you will start to benefit from the extra hours awake, especially once you pass 8 hours of sleep a day .

As someone who is planning to be a student-athlete, this video made me realize that I need to stop overworking myself day and night. That’s awesome! I’m in my second year of college now but I’ve been watching videos like these and perfecting my study techniques since about 8th grade as well. When you learn this stuff way in advance and figure out what works, it will put you miles ahead of most people when you get to high school or your first year of college. All of this knowledge on discipline, sleep cycles and study techniques is why I was able to breeze through difficult online classes when covid started, whereas a lot of people ended up failing out of my program. I’m currently a sophomore in college, during my freshman year I was slacking off and waiting till last minute to do assignments. I was always tired, feeling overwhelmed and stressed with everything I had piling up, one of the best things I did was scheduling and planning out my days during the week. This allowed me to better manage my time, I wasn’t spending all day completing assignments and was feeling so much relaxed. Just thought I’d share my experience for anyone else that’s going thru a similar experience.
To be honest after starting university ( I am a junior now) I realized something sleep or resting is rare in university life there is so much to prepare for (midterms, assignments, quizzes, hws, & etc) it is like torture. But there is one thing that can help you overcome these good time schedule and sleep like I tried sleeping for only 5 hours and it made me useless during the day so on weekends I try get my full sleep so I can function properly during the day. So my only advice is this sleep 8 hours a day because when people say I sleep for 5 hours is either because they are used to it or they don’t function properly and just do half of their work properly during the day. Finally never pull all nighters guys I did this once and I did not even do anything productive during that time this strategy is just useless especially before exams because you just fall asleep on your exam like I did this in freshmen year and nearly fell asleep on my exam paper
Ever since middle school, I think I've always been sleep deprived (and that sleep debt would be attempted to be repaid over weekends or school breaks) and I always felt tired, forgetful, and a little spacey (slow to recall). I once started getting 9 hours in sophmore year and the difference was night and day. I wasn't so tired to fall asleep in any of my classes (duh), but my memory was so much better (and faster). My average quiz grade in a class went from 3/5 (60%) to 5/5 and even though they were a small part of my overall grade, they 3/5s that I had accumulated were starting to weigh down my grade in the class. All this to say, if you feel like you don't have the brain capacity to store a lot of information or you feel like you tend to blank out a lot, getting a full night's rest might be beneficial to you.
I'm a top student and I'm exhausted :( Build good habits when you're getting the sleep and may the force be with you when you no longer have the time to.
Talking about the fact that Lebron sleeps 10 hours goes to show how personal that is - Kobe Bryant slept 4.5 hours a night and definitely doesn't feel like his performances were negatively impacted.
i cannot stress how much enough sleep is important for knowledge acquisition. there would be times i would do that whole "1.5 hour nap, 6.5 hour work sesh, repeat" for finals or for project crunches at work. despite getting about one cycle of REM in, it was very very iffy. it was more for just feeling rested "enough" to get stuff /done/ but not /learned/. my really valuable study sessions were always accompanied with full, restful sleep. im just glad that my degree required more principles of logic, processes, etc rather than route memorization of things. because no amount of studying can change what has to be learned through experience and practice.
most students don’t really sleep, specially the ones who achieve higher, you just gotta go to a uni and ask architecture/medical/engineering students how much time of sleep they get
One way you can practically integrate sleep into your study habits is by taking a nap before you study. I can get away with 5 hours on average on week days, but every day after work when I come home I take a nap ranging from 30min to an hour. I may be a little groggy when I go to start studying, but overall this recharges me so I’m not exhausted by the end of the night.
I was a top student, but of course I got tired in the middle of reading/listening or thinking/solving complex highly detailed materials. My eyes were getting closed and I took breaks of naps. My advice is to stop studying when you are tired, to take a break.
Sleep is a double edged sword: It can help you or it can hurt you. There are days I can go with little sleep and function like I slept for a full night. Then there are days where I sleep like 8-10 hours and I feel lazy all day….I sleep 5-7 hours and it’s both spectrums depending on how my body reacts….. There is no normal sleep hours for people….normal sleep is whatever YOU and your body define as normal. Too much sleep I know I avoid because I get lazy, no sleep will make me too tired…4-5 hours is my good spot but sometimes my body wanna be like “nope you still tired”….idk but you’re a Supersaiyan (like me) if you go with hardly any sleep or no sleep at all
Honestly if you are being diligent with your time there is no reason you can't get 7-8 hours a night of sleep in school or college. Don't put off assignments instead do them one or two weeks in advance and just spend a few minutes each day working on it. Same with studying, don't wait until the night before an exam, instead study a little bit every night. Not only will you preform better on the test you won't forget everything after the semester
I got seriously sleep deprived writting a very important paper, needless to say, I got the experience of reading it for the first time like anyone else after the submission because I have no memory of writting it after some point and I couldnt even remember the parts I wrote. Fortunately they made some sense so the paper got accepted.
Thank you for this amazing information, i'm a first year pharmacy student, having a hard time studying and memorizing a lot of conversation, elements therapeutic effects, and calculations, and your questions about if i get enough sleep to prepare myself and save the information, really hit me hard, because all this time what im doing is studying for 12 hours straight and sleep 5-6 hours, and 4 hours in major exam, and now i will try this new information and see the difference in my performances after a week.
I see that every body is talking about how unhealthy is to not sleep enough, but what about sleeping too much? I am one of those people who can sleep up to 10-14 hours a day if I have nothing to do, rarely I get less than 10 and when I wake up I feel super tired it doesn’t matter id it’s 7,8,910 or 14 I will feel incredibly tired when waking up
0:14 the anabolic window is a myth, you can eat protein pretty much at anytime during the day. What determines your gains is a combination of proper strength training, protein intake, and sleep. Protein timing makes a minimal impact on gains.
So I need to sleep 9-10 hours every night and if not i wake up dead, doesnt matter if it’s 7-8 hours i just die lol. I get frustrated sometimes bc i have many extracurriculars and lots of studying to do but i have to account for my sleep more than anything during the school week… so i usually hit the hay at 8:30 to allow for 30 mins to get sleepy and then sleep around 9pm so i get up at 6am… then leave the house at 6:30. :)
Right now, I need to sleep more because of my health, so I am going to drop a course this semester. I don’t care graduating late, but I need a good amount of sleep.
okay but he said factss and only facts!!! since I was in middle school I have been waking up at 5am thinking that this early routine would save time for me, I remember sleeping for 3 to 2 hours only to wake up that early, but now this has changed, I FEEL much better at school, I have planned a better sleeping schedule I am still waking up at 5am but I also get 7/8 hours of sleep! it cant be better than this and I encourage everyone else to figure out a way to make a better sleeping schedule🦾

School is constructed for us to never get enough sleep. It is possible to be healthy if you only go to school, but most people have afterschool activities and it's just not enough time.
I realized that im a biphasal sleeper, that i need to sleep after class rather than staying awake, i would then wake up 4 hours later and then do my assignments, readings, etc. and then go to sleep for the next day! :>
i experienced it when i went to a morning school to an afternoon school. without studying any minute more, my grades went from about 70% to 96% - and truth be said, i never learned a word from what they told me when i studied at morning, but i remember almost everything from my years studying at afternoon, even thought i rarely do reviews
This video explains why I find revising for my exams easier than other people that I know Because I wake up to study at 6 am and sleep at 10 am then go to sleep and wakeup at 14pm do things and go back to study Then I go for a small nap after doing things I like And at 10 pm study for an hour or two and go directly to sleep
damn i really needed this lol i tend to not sleep at all before any exam during exam season at university. so far i've been doing pretty well at my exams but i can't argue that a little more sleep wouldn't have improved my performance
Okay so the longer i sleep the longer i live. BUT if my younger sister sleeps two hours less than I do, in the long run she will have 'lived' longer than I have even though i am older...
I have ADHD and autism so I sleep 7 hours per night during the week and 10 hours on the weekend. I wish I could sleep more than 7 through the week, I get burn out so easily

The one thing I always make sure, is that I get a good full nights sleep before any exam or test. It always works. Somehow I feel far more prepared when I wake up, then I do the night before.

Even though we clearly know how vital sleep is for physical and mental performance, resident physicians are often made to work 80 hours a week and still have to study for boards. Which is crazy because they won't be able to learn as much and are more likely to make a mistake and misdiagnosis a patient
so if I want to be the best student, then all of my study needed sessions should not even give any essential output based on my own extreme brain coordinations. my body would be most thrilled to evaluate my own complete and insane evolution, and this is because learning anything will make it work like a dry sponge which will essentially become more and more sleep deprived. amazing examination, thanks for spreading awareness for this and many others involvement in the their sleep needed studies.
I hate the fact that i have to find out about these things on yt or internet. Like we go to school for so many years, not even one subject about our health. My uni professors are like: get enough sleep before an exam ( i study business informatics) but nobody is telling us why. Every country in the world should have a subject in school talking about sleep, focus, diet, hormonal deceases, bad habits, and physical activity. That subject shouldn’t be an exam subject, no grades but attendance mandatory and kids, students would be so much healthier. We adopt way to many unhealthy habits before we even know those habits are unhealthy. And when u try to change a bad habit it’s literally fighting with a wind…

Public, it’s about quality sleep not just “sleeping”. If you’re over 40, it’s a must to undergo an in lab sleep study to address other issues. Many physicians barely touch upon these subjects unless you’re a sleep physician. Sleep medicine is sort of a “new discovery”.
Very insightful, thank you.
AND IF YOU ACT RIGHT NOW, FOR ONLY 4 BITCOIN, I CAN HALP YOU FIX YOUR SLEEP
this comment is right. quality sleep is more important than quantity sleep.

Thank you so much for sharing! I'll try to incorporate this into my next study session
We watch your videos in our English calss. I'm from Russia and our professors decided to include your videos about universities into our curriculum! Thank you😌
So glad we could help! 🙏
12 hours is too much.
Tone it down to 9 if u can tho.
@@honkhonk8009 everyone is different, if 12 is what he needs then so be it. some only needs 6 some needs 12. He said since forever, that means thats just how his body is built.

Yeah, but there is a difference between someone who puts a huge load on their body getting enough sleep, and an average person. At a certain point you will start to benefit from the extra hours awake, especially once you pass 8 hours of sleep a day

@@ofisblagoevgrad6424 what worth are those hours if they don't have enough energy and brain power to do those things lol a person who does deep work for 2 hours can beat a person who does mindless work for 5 hours. And usually, the difference is because of how they treat their body
As someone who is planning to be a student-athlete, this video made me realize that I need to stop overworking myself day and night. The reason why I wasn't playing well or being able to focus in class better than usual is that on those days I didn't get enough sleep. Your video made me realize how bad I need to manage my time for academics, sports, and some rest time. I will definitely continue to watch more stuff from you as I want to really learn how to be a better student yet still get a lot of rest.

You’re going to do amazing in school and life if you keep trying to improve yourself. I wish you the best 👌🏻
@@hex11144 well said!! I’ve been doing the same tbh kind of had a rough time with my sleep in my first year of college. I’m now in my second year and trying to get 6 hours of sleep, and if not, then I nap after I come from college
As a matter of fact im in 0th grade, and im 5 years old
I've figured out a formula personally to make it so that I'm pretty much never tired. Intermittent fasting and that video you made a while back really is helping me not spike my glucose as bad
Intermittent fasting is my jam
Right. I don’t eat breakfast until 12 pm, first 5 hours of my day is so sharp when I’m on an empty stomach.
Can you please provide a link?
What was the other video?
Fasting releases dopamine, alertness etc. I study in the morning whilst in a fasted state. Not sure how much it helps, though
i convinced myself that i function better with only 3-5 hours of sleep. i literally fall asleep everywhere, even in classes, and can't properly do my school works. needless to say, i get 6-8 hours of sleep now and is doing pretty well with school :)
Procrastinated hard in the last months. You guys are helping me with the process of getting out of that. Thank you M&M
i used to get shitty grades in highschool and continue to get shitty grades in college but unlike highschool i make sure to go to bed at night no matter what is not done. my mental health issues significantly impact my work already but not sleeping well makes things feel a million times worse. if i am at least well rested i am able to endure better, i think and it helps me feel not-so-dejected about keeping at it even if the results aren't the best.

Did you do anything else other than timetabling, or was that all you had to do?
Thank you sir
Listen to this right here ☝️
Ever since middle school, I think I've always been sleep deprived (and that sleep debt would be attempted to be repaid over weekends or school breaks) and I always felt tired, forgetful, and a little spacey (slow to recall).
Me, I'm a Koala.
This makes me feel better about my new decision to not party as often or stay up on weekends. I really like my sleep!
I'm a top student and I'm exhausted :( Build good habits when you're getting the sleep and may the force be with you when you no longer have the time to.
I was homeschooled... I always slept in... got a super high SAT... get all A+ in college now.... SLEEP!! IT WORKS!
This right here ☝️
Talking about the fact that Lebron sleeps 10 hours goes to show how personal that is - Kobe Bryant slept 4.5 hours a night and definitely doesn't feel like his performances were negatively impacted.
i cannot stress how much enough sleep is important for knowledge acquisition. there would be times i would do that whole "1.5 hour nap, 6.5 hour work sesh, repeat" for finals or for project crunches at work. despite getting about one cycle of REM in, it was very very iffy. it was more for just feeling rested "enough" to get stuff /done/ but not /learned/. my really valuable study sessions were always accompanied with full, restful sleep. im just glad that my degree required more principles of logic, processes, etc rather than route memorization of things. because no amount of studying can change what has to be learned through experience and practice.
yo fellow furry 👀
most students don’t really sleep, specially the ones who achieve higher, you just gotta go to a uni and ask architecture/medical/engineering students how much time of sleep they get
One way you can practically integrate sleep into your study habits is by taking a nap before you study.
Sleep is a double edged sword:
It can help you or it can hurt you.
I sleep about 6-7 a night, mid day nap 30-60 minutes.
When I got covid, I slept about 12 hours, and I had never been so awake.
I got seriously sleep deprived writting a very important paper, needless to say, I got the experience of reading it for the first time like anyone else after the submission because I have no memory of writting it after some point and I couldnt even remember the parts I wrote. Fortunately they made some sense so the paper got accepted.
I always roll my eyes with peers saying they don't sleep and stuff. Even if it is working for you, I need my sleep to think and be happy
I am one of those people who can sleep up to 10-14 hours a day if I have nothing to do, rarely I get less than 10 and when I wake up I feel super tired it doesn’t matter id it’s 7,8,910 or 14 I will feel incredibly tired when waking up
Can you do a vid about perfectionism and how to conquer it?
Ohh very interesting will do some research

I stopping passing tests in 7th grade, not because I didn't get any sleep but because I didn't and still don't really know how to study for them
okay but he said factss and only facts!!! since I was in middle school I have been waking up at 5am thinking that this early routine would save time for me, I remember sleeping for 3 to 2 hours only to wake up that early, but now this has changed, I FEEL much better at school, I have planned a better sleeping schedule I am still waking up at 5am but I also get 7/8 hours of sleep! it cant be better than this and I encourage everyone else to figure out a way to make a better sleeping schedule🦾

This video explains why I find revising for my exams easier than other people that I know
Because I wake up to study at 6 am and sleep at 10 am then go to sleep and wakeup at 14pm do things and go back to study
Then I go for a small nap after doing things I like
And at 10 pm study for an hour or two and go directly to sleep
damn i really needed this lol i tend to not sleep at all before any exam during exam season at university. so far i've been doing pretty well at my exams but i can't argue that a little more sleep wouldn't have improved my performance
CAN YOU GUYS PLEASE PLEASE MAKE A VIDEO ON CONSISTENCY 😭
