Honestly, that scene really gives a sense of just how incredibly powerful Azshara is. She didn't plan that, she didn't have any of the typical mage BS going with runes or threadweaving or whatever, she just *reacted* to something she didn't even know was happening... and basically held the ocean back for a minute or so, just on raw power. Another character who they found a perfect voice actor for to really bring a great charisma to it... even if you aren't supposed to be rooting for her
Azshara was indeed the most powerful, but she was also taking power from the Well of Eternity to cast spells, like all mages did back then. The magic you could cast using that kind of power was of a scale far beyond anything that you can see right now, though it was far more "raw" in that time as mages have had 10000 years to perfect their art since then. It's important for Illidan's story, as a Mage's path was far easier and more powerful than a Druid's, which is why he left Cenarius' teachings to become a mage (which led him to meet Sargeras for the first time, sacrifice his eyes and all that stuff). You could argue that right now a Mage's path is far harder, as it requieres basically a lifetime of study and dedication to achieve what you see in-game.
Now the real question: Would she like her as much, if she knew what she was really like? Or that it was she that first let the demons into the world(basically most of the really bad shit that happened to Azeroth, can be laid at her feet). She willingly made a deal with Sargeras(leader of the burning legion/the dark titan), for power - Even though her people were doing fine before that, thriving even(well, except for her whole "highborne supremacy shtick". But again, that was all her).
Well have to refer them as highborns, Dark trolls evolved to 2 factions, nightelves kept many traits from trolls like culture, while highborns didn't. Nightelves Trolls and Taurens are the only races channel druid power from Wildgods.
Yet she is not a queen. The Old Gods always achieve victories through manipulations. Everything, even his indignation was just a game. By the way, it was a really nice reaction :3
She is the queen of the night elves and the queen of Illidan and Malfurian at that time. Later they stopped her opening the portal to Sergaras. High elves are night elves who decided to follow the sun later in the story.
she was great in time, but was traitor of her kind manipulated by Sargeras to open portal for him... long later N'zoth changed her and rest her Elfs in Nagas, etc... but N'zoth burried in Nyalotha was weakest Old God- Sargeras easy kill strongest earlier, when was good... bli$$ard screw story and now launch Warbringers to lock holes and time line- pathetic!
Blizzard should make movies. And only. They were greatest in video games development...about 15 years ago. But today...they are one of the worst. Unfortunately :(

That isn't the ocean tho. That massive "sea" is the well of eternity. Really puts into perspective how big it was.
