  • In a Euro 1972 qualifier Northern Ireland played against Spain at Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán, Sevilla. George Best provided yet another sensational performance for his homecountry, once beating 6 players before setting up his teammate for a shot at goal... but the rest of the Irishmen were not up for the task.

    For those of you that doesn't understand spanish, even the broadcaster, legendary Matías Prats Sr. was praising Best every time he touched the ball, calling him "genius"... I'm sure that the andalucian crowd in the Sanchez Pizjuan that night appreciated Best very well, it's the kind of football more loved in the south of Spain

    Best inspired so many of us youngsters to go outside and enjoy our football. On pitches, parks, or just a street under the lights, we played until our parents called us in as it was getting too late. Thanks Georgie Best, you meant a lot to so many of us as we grew up in the early 1970's.

    An absolute genius and one of the greatest players of all time. To. watch him was magical, but I still cant help think that he should have passed the ball about a bit more than he did. He seemed to have it in his head that once he had the ball at his feet, he needed to dribble all the way to the goal on his own, and even went passed his own team mates. It must have been frustrating for them sometimes when he lost possession and they're standing there calling for him to pass the ball.

      Contrary to opinion, Bobby loved George as a player, but strongly criticised his failure to pass the ball more, especially in the last 35 yards. Never a problem for Bobby though, as 35 yards was his trademark!!

      Try counting the amount of passes he makes in these highlights. The rest of the time he was commanding the attention of so many opposition players as he looked to create moments of genius that no one else was capable of.
      That was why fans adored him, and he is still revered to this day for his fearless love of the ball. Today, sadly, that has been coached out of talented players.
      GOAT.

    Some scintillating plays from Best here. Hard to believe, looking how well he played, his team lost 3-0. Just serves to highlight, how great players need a platform to showcase their talent on. Cruyff & Beckenbauer where fortunate, around this period. They had great club & national teams to showcase their brilliance. Best around that time, was playing in a declining club side & a average national team. Little wonder, he lost interest in the game.

    • @HarmsFootball
      @HarmsFootball  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It was a surprise for me just how bad did his teammates look on that night - the previous game that I've seen was against England from 1969 and they've looked like a well-coherent (although not very talented) team. In this game they were all disastrous, and Spain wasn't even that good! I can't imagine how Best was feeling that night, it must've been so frustrating.

      @@HarmsFootball Yes that's right. It's a pity, that there wasn't a Great Britain side. That would have allowed him to showcase his incredible talents at the 1966,1970, 1974, world cups.

      @@johnpacino007 I've always wondered how that would have been. A UK team (depending on the era of course) including players like Best, Law, Dalglish, Bremner, Lennox, Rush, Ramsey, Giggs, Souness, Hansen, Strachan and of course Bale. That's why Liverpool, Forest, Leeds were so strong in Europe.

      Cruyff made ajax. They say it was Michels. But it was Cruyff's talent. He had no bed of roses. Ajax was only a small club. Same goes for dutch national team. And yes he was surrounded by more talent like Beckenbauer was.

    • @alanmctavish4802
      @alanmctavish4802 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @harms people always forget that this was best with just two or three good players in this team and he showed how great he was. The great players were pat jeninngs who i thought was the greatest keeper in the world at this time and big dereck dougan, who was there centre forward and at 6' 3" there was not many that could beat him in the air. As being 6ft was big in those days and being 6' 3" meant you were huge and still are at that height and dougan could score goals on the ground just as good as in the air. When i watch alot of n,irelands games from 1964 to 1971 very very rarely did i see dougan not win a ball in the air, as england and scotlands tallest players were 5' 11" to 6ft so those 3 inches make a big difference! I watched alot of pele as well and i started to notice that he wasnt as good at dribbling as george best was, yes he could do it, but after he beat one or two men he would run into danger or he quickly passesd as he knew he was losing it. This kind of suprised me becouse of the high esteem that peles held in, and i even thought i was seeing it wrong. But the more i watched? no, no way was i seeing it wrong. Pele just couldnt dribble as great as george best could, and this is a game that clearly shows that. And theres no way pele could beat players with so much ease and still hold the ball in the way best does here, best is beating men for fun really he isnt botherd who wins the match, well thats not true but best plays to the audience and the floodlights are his stage lights. The way he beats a man then stands and waits on him to do it again is a joy to watch and the way he can ride hard brutal tackles as he jumps out the way is great to watch. Then that back heel he does so hard and fast and it goes strait to the players foot. This man had all the natural skill in the world and you can see him here at just age 24 coming onto his peak but to then leave the game at only 27, well 26 really he was finished and we cant help but feel cheated that we never saw him at his peak for another 6 to 8 years becouse even that sounds a long time, and what we would have seen in those years. Its frightining to think best would have got better? How could any one get better than what he already was at? Was alot of peoples thinking, as in millions find it hard to see that best could have got better than at age 22, 23, to 25. If he did then no other player would have come near him in terms of ability, skill, timing, perfect balance, speed, bravery, tenacity, remarkable speed of thought, flair, and he had total self-believe. Alot of great players lack a finish but best was nerveless and he knew where that net was. He was the first player to score from a corner kick against ipswich, bobby robson said it was a fluke. At half time best told him a will do it again then the first one we get. Best swung it in and it beat the keeper by inches as it was high then the ball bouncend twice along the crossbar. Best looked over at bobby and shook hes shoulders, bobby knew he and ipswich were lucky that time, but to get beaten by two corners by best? Imagine that headline in the papers, eh? Ipswich cant even defend against or stop two george best corners into the far corner? Plus that famous lob over pat jennings best scores in 1971 at the stretford end, its my favourite goal since the first time i saw it in 1981, becouse i had never seen any player score a goal like that before. It was the way he watched big pat try to clear it and george was standing at a slight angle to his left and 15 yards out, he then let it bounce on the mud and onto his chest to then let it drop onto his right boot and lob it over pat who was on the 6 yard line and phil beal and cyril knowles were on the goal line but just watched as the ball floated so slowly over them and dropped about 4 inches under the bar and down the net. Exhibiting sublime execution gauged to the very inch. Everytime i see it the hairs stand up on my kneck. I wonder why is that goal so special? Its becouse its the hardest goal to score, becouse you have to act in a split second what your going to do as the ball leaves the keeper then you have to control it onto your chest as it comes to you? Then you have to let it just drop onto your boot with the perfect balance and weight, then as you hit the ball or lob it over you have to put the perfect weight on the ball as you do it. Thats not easy! Its all about balance, control, speed of thought, then weight as you hit the ball, and perfect weight to beat two men on the goal line who are over 6ft tall. Thats why! Its not your average chip or lob over the keeper from 30 yards. Its so much harder. Only best would have thought about doing it never mind just doing it alone! Best made that look special becouse with 5 men infront of him in the box he only let the ball touch the ground once as big pat tried to punsh it clear, then best lobbed it over 5 spurs players infront of him from 15 yards out by just touching the ball twice becouse that was all the touches he needed to score from there. Where as any other player would need at least 4.

Even pele wasnt as good as that or cruyff. Best had so much more natural skill than those two put together. He didnt even know what he was going to do before he got the ball, everything was done on instinct. A mean this is spain hes playing against and hes just taking the piss out them as if hes a kid in a school play ground. I must admitt dereck dougan was 6ft3 a giant in those days and he couldnt even win a high ball in the air against men at 5ft9 let alone score any? A dont blame george for treating this as recreational football, you can see it by his body language. But he was the greatest player ever to kick a ball and always will be. Rip george
