I destroyed my home planet, Phaester Osiris, and crossed the galaxy, leaving havoc in my wake. Until my brother Horus and 740 other Osirians confronted me on Earth. Pyramids of Mars was one of the first Doctor Who serials I watched on local PBS, on a rerun marathon, with my family. Back when TV was broadcast over the airwaves, and families rarely had more than one TV. I was really young, so I had no idea what was happening, but my father had always been a technophile, and we had a VCR, and he recorded the serial so we could rewatch it. It was one of the few Doctor Who serials I saw complete more than once until the internet came around and it was possible to track down episodes.
This is like what I went through the first time I read the Legion of Superheroes The Great Darkness Saga. When some old, rarely revisited villain returns and you (in the audience) realizes just how much trouble the heroes are in. It'll probably be resolved next ep, but until then, the week can't be over soon enough.

Neither UNIT, nor even the Doctor, has had to deal with Harbingers until this era. We are introduced to that concept in Devil's Chord, and even the Doctor doesn't witness that Harbinger moment. Only the Doctor seems to know it's a thing, and thus, UNIT has no reason to make the connection -- unlike TARDIS, seeing as they've been around one for most of the show's history. Something happening in a scene in a show doesn't mean everyone in the show suddenly has that knowledge. Now that gods and their harbingers will become a VERY known problem, you can bet money that UNIT will keep their eyes peeled for Harbingers from now on. They've simply had no reason to (until now).

gods mentioned in this episode that have appeared in classic episodes are Mara the god of Beasts from the 5th doctor era, the Trickster who is actually from the Sarah Jane adventures and one of his lackeys was the beetle from the 10th doctor episode 'Turn Left,' obviously Toymaker from 1st Doctor, and the trifold gods of Misery, Mischief, and Malice are most likely Rag, Nar, and Rog from the 7th Doctor story 'Greatest Show in the Universe' And noticeably missing is the god Fenric from the 7th story 'Curse of Fenric'

I think Kat's response is really interesting because as a fan I can see your feeling of 'I should know who that is but I don't' Which in my opinion shows that unfortunately in this instance Russel was too busy trying to make a big moment for classic fans whilst not thinking hang on most of my audience is 'new who' fans who don't know who this is. At the end of the day Sutekh appeared once 49 years ago it's a super deep cut reference that a huge number of fans won't know. I only knew because I was following rumours so watched Pyramids of Marse last week. The moment was incredible but only because I had just watched it and was hoping that's who it was going to be.😊

It’s weird to see people who don’t know who Sutekh is watching the episode. It would be like Spyfall’s reveal without knowing who the Master is. As someone who grew up with classic Who (or Doctor Who as we called it back then), it left me screaming. It’s a shame it falls flat for people who haven’t seen earlier episodes.
I suspected Sutekh would be the big bad because of the hints they’ve dropped throughout this series. Eg They lift a scene directly from _Pyramids of Mars_ in _The Devil’s Chord_ where the Doctor shows Ruby an alternative present day. The Doctor left him to spend an eternity trapped in a time tunnel, so it would make sense that he would be “the one who waits”. He’s also basically The Devil, which would make sense as to why the Toymaker would be scared of him. It would need to be a manipulation of time that he needed to escape - hence the groaning TARDIS. And of course, the cheesy Sue’s Tech (honestly, Russell! Smh)

    A couple of thoughts.
With references to the Gods of Ragnarok and the Mara, RTD is grouping together a group of Classic era god level enemies. I wonder if Fenric is included. All of which may mean they will appear over the next few years. Yes, god level beings exist in classic Who. They were never connected before. However some manifestations might overlap with others.
The Sutekh drop was pure fan service for us classic people who are old enough to remember. I was cheering while going "oh feck this is bad".
In The Devil's Chord, when the Doctor showed Ruby the ruined future - this was a direct homage to Pyramids of Mars, and RTD has hit anew level of foreshadowing.
I don't think Sutekh is the big bad. The shenanigans around Mrs Flood is to be explained. Then there is the Ruby's mum issue. If there is a major reveal, I expect someone more generally known and not something only the diehards know. RTD has always been keeping things open for all new viewers. This smacks of a type of gatekeeping that I don't believe RTD would do.
Gabriel Woolf, the voice of Sutekh was also the voice of The Beast in The Impossible Planet. Probably why you are getting vibes of that. Also I wouldn't be shocked if we get an explicit connection. Or it could be left implicit.

That Sutekh reveal reminds me of when they introduced John Hurt ahead of the 50th Anniversary special, they really cranked up the reveal and then he turned around and although I know the actor, I was like, I don't really understand the significance of this or why I'm supposed to be THIS shocked by it. So I'm inclined to think that it's not about knowing the Pyramids of Mars etc, they were just trying to make it as megahype as possible and in the end you're left being told how to feel about it instead of actually feeling that way. Plus let's be honest, the character design of the CGI Sutekh looks like something from Scooby-Doo 2 Monsters Unleashed, if something that cartoonish popped out and told me it was the Destroyer of Worlds I would be like, have you seen yourself, Pupper?? I did really enjoy this episode overall though and the whole Time Window sequence is my favourite scene of the whole season, I almost feel like the Sutekh thing has overshadowed what is a really good pre-finale in its own right.

Sutekh is the last of the Osirans from the world Phaester Osiris. He became paranoid that some other life form would secede him as a supreme being, and decided to devote himself to death, dust, and darkness. In the Dr Who mythos, he is the influence for the Egyptian god Set, and he was entombed by 740 of his fellow Osirans in ancient Egypt, with a relay on Mars containing the key to his prison. He was stopped by the 4th Doctor in 1911, on the grounds where UNIT would have their HQ in the future. Sutekh has appeared in the extended universe, as has aspects and relics of the lost Osiran culture.

This reveal got me on my feet. My favourite RTD episode to date. That list of gods from the reveal shows the series has always played in that space. Maybe for the classic Who watch Pyramids, Kinda & Snakedance (for The Mara), The Trickster trilogy from Sarah Jane Adventures . And round it of with the new animation of The Celestial Toymaker might be a good related line up. Actually, we've met more than two of the gods already. Besides the Toymaker and Maestro, we've also met the Trickster in the Sarah Jane Adventures spin off and the god Mara as well which is also from Classis Who. As a fan of Doctor Who since I can remember (at least 77 or so, where I was 5) seeing Sutekh come back AND being voiced by the original actor who played Sutekh back in Pyramids of Mars is awesome. Now, they've obviously retconned Sutekh into being this super mega god of gods, but he was easily the most powerful being the Doctor met in the entire franchise even back in the Tom Baker days etc. In the "extended" universe aka comics etc. Sutekh makes at least one appearance that I'm aware of - and some of the story beats have been used so far, including also stuff from a Trickster story that was never used (an abandoned baby left at a door step that turns out to be very important....sound familiar?).
And Mrs. Flood has to be the Doctor's granddaughter Susan. She literally said she hides herself away, right after the Doctor explained regeneration to Ruby as saving themselves from death, or hiding away. I know they made her out to be sinister in that scene with storm coming, I just think that's a misdirection.

As I’m sure many have already commented, lots of cool references for longtime Who fans in that monologue listing the gods alone - here’s an idea post-season finale: you could make a classic / new Who / spinoff viewing list for their stories (Sutekh, the Mara, the Trickster, the threefold deity that is probably referencing the Gods of Ragnarok)!
As for them being gods vs aliens, I think there’s been plenty of (admittedly vague) references to them as beings operating outside the normal laws of physics / time / space, which probably makes them view themselves as gods. Sutekh in classic Who was originally the last survivor of an all powerful ancient race called the Osirians.

Great reaction and review. Sutekh is a villain from the classic show. The fourth doctor, played by Tom Baker, just barely defeated Sutekh, with the help of Sarah Jane. It took hundreds of Osiarans to trap Sutekh the first time. The doctor knew Sutekh was god-like. He showed Sarah Jane the future where Sutekh escaped. The entire universe was dead. The Doctor finally triumphed by trapping Sutekh in a time corridor for 7000 years. He was supposed to have aged the evil Osiran to death, but with all the universe rule changes in the last decade it's not surprising to have him return. As to who will die....if they go by the classic who method ... everyone except the doctor and his companions. Since they are dealing with "deities" now, to win....they will need make a sacrifice. It's my felling that Susan will return, but not sure how. Maybe to simply be that sacrifice.

Sometimes RTD really thinks he's alot cleverer than he actually is. That H.Arbinger reveal felt like an intellectually insulting "bwahahaha, aren't I clever!" moment.
Personally, if I had to guess, I think Mrs Flood could be Susan. The original few Doctors did 4th wall breaks on occasion, Hartnell being the first (and only one to acknowledge he was in a TV show) so chances that she's a Timelord at the very least is pretty high.
I'm actually kinda convinced that Ruby is one of these Gods herself. Sutekh was at war with the Ancient Egyptian Gods, trying to overthrow the throne he was meant to protect and in mythology, Ra is usually represented by a Red Sun. A Ruby Sun(day) you might say?

Watching as an 8 years old in 1975 'Pyramids of Mars' was by far my favourite DW story. The following year I bought and read the novel, and in 1985 bought and watched, and re-watched, the VHS. At some point I even wrote a sequel (if i recall correctly it also had Sarah-Jane, Romana II and both their K9s in it...)
Somehow, despite being in Japan and not being able to watch it until 48 hours after broadcast, I remained spoiler-free for this episode. The final minutes left me grinning ear-to-ear. I may have even punched the air in a most un-British manner. Absolutely loved every moment.
And my very next thought was, "this will mean absolutely nothing to anyone who hasn't watched PoM". Your reaction essentially confirmed that. It'a shame. Given this was meant to be a whole new thing, 'series 1', Disney, it seems strange to have relied so heavily on the past. As an ancient fan I am very, very happy, but I hope new watchers will be carried through.

I'm really glad it worked so well for you! Not a super great reveal for me BUT there could be lots of different contextual reasons for that. I'm excited to see how I feel after watching the second part

i love how the doctor and kate had moment where she hugged because she knew he wasnt okay and was scared to meet his granddaughter and how much it would hurt him.
and i love how kate looked at the doctor when ruby asked why cant the doctor know his own granddaughter and how she just let the doctor explain regeneration.

Hey gals. This is the most excited I have felt about Doctor Who since... I don't know when! Sutekh! Oh Gals! Please run don't walk and watch Pyramids of Mars before next week! It is one of Tom Baker's absolute best episodes ever, and the fact you've already started watching Classic Who will help as I know ya'll will appreciate the fact that it was made in 1975 as a kids show... and yet can also be utterly thrilling tv. I hope RTD does Sutekh right in the next ep...

This is the best reveal RTD has ever done!! It does pay off the build up, but more for classic Who fans and fans of The Sarah-Jane Adventures. Really, you have to know Pyramids of Mars, Kinda and Snakedance (5th Doctor) for The Mara, The Trickster from SJA, and possibly Greatest Show of the Galaxy (7th Doctor). While it doesn't help brand new fans, for the people that know all the history, this was AMAZING!!!
Also I don't think Mrs. Flood is as bad as you think!! Just sayin'!!! Hahaha!

I agree. I was blown away. But I also agree that it doesn’t work for new fans. I didn’t consider that at the time. But then you could say that about any big reveal. What would the big Dalek reveal in _Bad Wolf_ be like if you missed _Dalek?_
I’m genuinely not sure what I feel is fair criticism here. A lot of people started watching at Matt Smith, so the big reveal that Missy is The Master would mean nothing to them. Can you criticise a show because you personally haven’t watched certain episodes, or is there an accepted point where we assume people need to be educated on past plots/characters that happened before it?
I’m with you on Mrs. Flood. I’m not 100% that she’s evil. She’s blunt, but so’s the Doctor. She may even be vital in bringing Sutekh down.

I am a fan of both the New and the Classic series of Doctor Who. When the episode revealed that Sutekh had returned, that chilled me to the bone. I needed time to recover because I know how dangerous Sutekh is! It is kind of like what happened when Maestro or the Celestial Toymaker or the Trickster (see Trickster's Brigade - Turn Left episode) is involved. You know they are elemental forces and are difficult to beat. They can bend reality to their whim.

God of Death not threatening enough without knowing about Sutekh?, we were also told by the Toymaker that the only one he feared to challenge was the one who waits! Its easy for me to say though being a big fan of the Tom Baker era and my first thought was the only foe that scared the fourth doctor was Sutekh the Destroyer.

Also, what Meastro said while interrogating Ruby, "He could not have known, he wasn't there!" or something.

The Tardis interior had a green glow to it for the begining of the New Who era. That might be why you associate the color with Who.

Hi Gallifrey Gals! My theory is that Ruby Sunday is the daughter of Dorothy Bell from the comics. They have the same hair and eye color. Ruby's theme is Carol of the BELLS.
