The best version of this ballet I've ever seen. I keep coming back after years, and I will always say: "bravo, Mr. Legris, you are the best spectre de l'arose💐💐💐💐💐💐👏👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Agreed, He is truly outstanding! His fluidity is astonishing. After watching just about all the versions available, his version towers above everybody else. Claude is also a superb partner.
After a look at diverse versions of this ballet, i am always back to this one, the best of all, even the Nureyev one : Only Manuel Legris traduces the subtelty of the rose with a technical refinement and a precision serving the sensuality without any caricature pushing the role to a vulgar "mièvrerie", he gives in any moves the softness of the petals and the intoxicating scent suggesting sensual lust of a dance with a young man at the ball just before the scene... But also Claude de Vulpian pantomime is perfectly fluid and touching of innocence, in a suggested reverie which is not bothered by excessive demonstrativeness and acting as one of those who never loses the delicate demeanor of a quality education specific to young girls of her condition...even in passionate moments. But all the others elements of production are brought together to allow this magical moment to materialize before us : The cut, texture of the fabric, the lenght of the sleeves and the skirt, the patterns of the negligee and the wallpaper, the refined style of the furnishings, the simple delicacy of the curtains (without a fan to move them), the delicate romanticism of the bouquets placed on the dressing table or in the elegant opaline vase, the background decor presenting the trees of the garden forming bluish shadows in the night sky with a sensuality à la Fragonard, the beautiful proportion of the window woodwork, the deep respect of the drawings of Léon Bakst, without concessions to the fashion of the moment, all bathed in a spectral blue-green light, and a slightly warmer tone continuing the spectrum of the rose, all this rendered by a magnificent shot...makes of this video the reference for this ballet !!! Only possible through the refinement and artistic professionalism of the Paris Opera professionnals.
He is like a sculpture in movement, such beautiful counterpoints! I have seen it so many times, and I will always come back to see it. Manuel Legris, bravo! 💐🌹
Here am I once again falling in love with this gorgeous piece, this masterpiece. Manuel Legris, you are the Spectre de la Rose!❤👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 bravo!🌹💐
He is the best Rose I have seen. He is magnificent ! Naturally attuned to his feminine and masculine selves, he channels his inner rose, sensuous, a little wild, with tendrils waving like a Rose in the breeze ! He channels Nijinsky. Having watched all the Legris that is on youtube, and other dancers performing the Rose, he has become my favorite male dancer. He is now the artistic director of the Vienna ballet and has retired from performing. I wish some of his other roles, such as Onegin, were posted to watch !
Yes, agree @Marguerite. His exquisite arms. Beautiful! I keep coming back to watch him. He is retired now & looks so young here. It is easy see the influence of Nureyev’s instruction. 💕
An absolutely, utterly and completely mesmerizing Rose. Legris proves that less is more. His is a restrained, almost inward Rose, quite properly more botanical than animal. What a joy this is.
Couldn't agree more. This piece requires an utter sophistication and taste from dancers. Legris is more then likely the best of any contemporaries. The style and playful sensuality are so elusive here only a specifically gifted performer can pull that off. Manuel is just unbelieveable - only Plissetskaya have had such expressive arms. Not to mention his light but powerful jumps and fast tours which are only enhancing overall extatic impression of this exquisite (is the word) performance. Claude de Voulpian was lesser known soloist from Paris Opera ballet troupe but she is so well paired here. A shining example of the quality achieved in ballet training and performing by french school. Bravo!

This is the most complete, longest version of the ballet that I have ever seen. I love this! The dancers' performances are sublime, and I especially enjoy the lengthy solos of the rose , with many jumps and different arm positions from past ballet history. The choreographer expresses the music extremely well. Thanks so much for posting this! I find it very touching and lovely.
hands like rose petals, Legris really brings to life the spirit of the rose. i also adore Soloviev's interpretation and Elena Evteyeva (some call her Yevteyeva) as the girl, she really captures her dreamy enchantment and blooming youth.

Only possible through the refinement and artistic professionalism of the Paris Opera professionnals. ...And the choice of the color of the rose : pale pink like the barely blushing cheeks of a young girl deaming of love...and not the excessively carnal red of a vulgar and outrageous passion... we have here people capable of interpreting the nuances of a poem, not extrapolating as if it were necessary to highlight it tot the point of distorting it in order to understand it or feel each aspect to the point of disintegrating the general athmosphere sought. 1837 I want to add this advice : to discover the music that Berlioz, the romantic composer added to reveal the poetry of this poem, i recommand to listen to the version of Veronique Gens and Louis Langrée, that are the both artists only able to suggest the delicacy of the poem and of the music without any sensual overdose effect (cf Joyce di Donato).

Better than Baryshnikov and Nureyev...and that's saying a lot.
Inspiring..........
Ah!... Legris is breeze...
After a look at diverse versions of this ballet, i am always back to this one, the best of all, even the Nureyev one :
Only Manuel Legris traduces the subtelty of the rose with a technical refinement and a precision serving the sensuality without any caricature pushing the role to a vulgar "mièvrerie", he gives in any moves the softness of the petals and the intoxicating scent suggesting sensual lust of a dance with a young man at the ball just before the scene...
But also Claude de Vulpian pantomime is perfectly fluid and touching of innocence, in a suggested reverie which is not bothered by excessive demonstrativeness and acting as one of those who never loses the delicate demeanor of a quality education specific to young girls of her condition...even in passionate moments.
But all the others elements of production are brought together to allow this magical moment to materialize before us :
The cut, texture of the fabric, the lenght of the sleeves and the skirt,
the patterns of the negligee and the wallpaper, the refined style of the furnishings,
the simple delicacy of the curtains (without a fan to move them),
the delicate romanticism of the bouquets placed on the dressing table or in the elegant opaline vase,
the background decor presenting the trees of the garden forming bluish shadows in the night sky with a sensuality à la Fragonard,
the beautiful proportion of the window woodwork,
the deep respect of the drawings of Léon Bakst, without concessions to the fashion of the moment,
all bathed in a spectral blue-green light, and a slightly warmer tone continuing the spectrum of the rose,
all this rendered by a magnificent shot...makes of this video the reference for this ballet !!!
Le Spectre de la Rose
Théophile GAUTIER
Recueil : "La Comédie de la Mort"
Soulève ta paupière close
Qu’effleure un songe virginal ;
Je suis le spectre d’une rose
Que tu portais hier au bal.
Tu me pris encore emperlée
Des pleurs d’argent de l’arrosoir,
Et parmi la fête étoilée
Tu me promenas tout le soir.
Ô toi qui de ma mort fus cause,
Sans que tu puisses le chasser,
Toute la nuit mon spectre rose
À ton chevet viendra danser.
Mais ne crains rien, je ne réclame
Ni messe ni De Profundis ;
Ce léger parfum est mon âme,
Et j’arrive du paradis.
Mon destin fut digne d’envie :
Pour avoir un trépas si beau
Plus d’un aurait donné sa vie,
Car j’ai ta gorge pour tombeau,
Et sur l’albâtre où je repose
Un poète avec un baiser
Ecrivit : Ci-gît une rose
Que tous les rois vont jalouser.
1837
I want to add this advice : to discover the music that Berlioz, the romantic composer added to reveal the poetry of this poem, i recommand to listen to the version of Veronique Gens and Louis Langrée, that are the both artists only able to suggest the delicacy of the poem and of the music without any sensual overdose effect (cf Joyce di Donato).
