As an Aussie, it's no wonder this was handeled poorly by the Police. Our prime minister in 1967 straight up took a swim in the sea near Portsea, Victoria and his body has never been recovered. Our. Own. PM.
I'd like to point out that from an unbiased (i've no positive nor negative outlook for the country as Australia doesn't affect my country in any way shape or form) perspective, Australia has had some of the shittiest PMs/leaders a country can possibly have. I've no clue how in the world, this can be possible, but every time i happen to find myself reading Aussie history, i'm "ok, maybe the next one's better" or "maybe one in the past" but the deeper i dig, with some... exceptions, they were all shit. Like really, really shit, not just on a personal level like the current one, but also, in their job to the people (which, well, no country can claim good actors past a certain age, nowadays all the societal rot wants to be a politician, pays well, fattens up the piggy etc). I cannot believe Australia is still floating, considering, which is a shame, because not a single Aussie i've met, work or otherwise, has been a c*nt, yet your PMs are all... MASSIVE C*NTS!
Corruption in the Australian police force would absolutely have played a role, I don’t know if non-Australians know JUST how corrupt the police and judicial system were during this time. Honestly the investigation makes the narcotic dealers taking the boat the most plausible theory. It’s horrible that the families never got the investigation and answers they deserved. If anyone tried to reopen this case today I bet they’d find every little bit of evidence conveniently missing without explanation, almost certainly so in regards to dental records on that unidentified corpse.
As an Aussie who lived in Australia at this time, the levels of corruption of the Aussie police was insane. Just look it up. Brothel madam murders, drug cartel, etc. All of it had the filthy hands of those corrupt cops in it. It's not just incompetence, it was a full-blown ring of deep corruption. Even clean cops were targeted. Great video, mate, loved the slight mispronounciations of Canberra and Mildura. 👌 Keep up the great work! Cheers!
I recently started listening to the Weird Crap in Australia podcast where they touch upon this subject in mulitple episodes. Pretty much every major case in the 80s seems to have been affliced by police corruption (resulting in them e.g. not investiagting cases, declaring obvious murders suicides, evidence "disappearing", up to downright executions of criminals). I was very surprised to hear this and can understand why the police in Australia still is not very highly regarded today, from what I read it's never been properly investigated.
I would hasten to add that much of that corruption centered around the New South Wales police. Victoria's cops, although not entirely clean skins, were not even close to NSW's cops as far as corruption goes. Queensland's were also pretty bad.
It never fails to amaze me how many people die by suicide with their hands bound or disappear under strange circumstances that are ignored by law enforcement. Truly unbelievable that this trend continues to this day across the world.
It never fails to amaze me how people think the police and coroners are less susceptible to corruption or incompetence than the average person. I mean just look around you. Most of them are dangerously incompetent at best.
@@ananthropomorphictalkinggo6641 Yeah the cops are useless. I have been a victim of violent crime and two weeks ago my car was stolen from outside a brightly lit store in full view of cameras. Trying to get the police to do anything was like pulling teeth. I only call them when I absolutely have to, like when I need a police report for insurance. I have lived in urban areas and small towns- for the most part you’re totally on your own. ACAB
@@ripwednesdayadams my house got robbed when I was younger, and the police did absolutely nothing. It took me literally one day to figure out who did it, because my neighbor saw it happen (and didnt call the cops because he's a POS), and I knew the people who did it. Literally all they would've had to have done is the bare minimum, and they wouldn't even do that. I even found some of my stuff at a pawn shop. After I solved the case for them, I went to them to tell them all this, and they didn't even question the people, or get any info from the pawn shop. They're just government sanctioned bullies who are there to collect extra money from traffic tickets.
@@ananthropomorphictalkinggo6641 that's beyond unfortunate and extremely horrible but not all cops are like that, just a small percentage. but hey if you really think all cops are bullies then perhaps you shouldn't ever call them for help.
That poor kid. I can't imagine how terrified and hopeless he must have felt when a group of monsters pretending to be human tied concrete to him and threw him into a river to drown. It's heartbreaking, and even worse that no one involved will ever get caught.
@@charliekill88 I'm talking about Robby-Jo Coulter, the 17 year old who was chained up and thrown into the Murray River. The video spoke about him being another victim of Derrick Hand's corruption.
Im aftaid unless you combine shameless self promotion wirh your hard work its pretty unlikely youll get the credit you deserve. That's not to take anything away from the worthy contributors that do get recognised ,its just the internet and youtube in particular is a fickle and extremely demanding mistress
I've done the same with some of the uploaders I follow and only 1 has ever credited me. I do it because I feel like there's always more to know and because the info I add is stuff I coincidentally already knew. I like being acknowledged but I'd much rather someone gave me an opportunity to work with them because I find this kind of work fascinating and not really hard. At the very least I shared knowledge of something and knowledge is meant to be shared. Within reason that is.
You mention the EPIRB would send out a signal for 48 hours if it were ever submerged, and since you said that no signal was ever received, that gives even more credence to the claim that the investigator and coroner were corrupt. I'm inclined to believe that the ship was victim to piracy and stolen. Good work on the video, as always!
Let me say, this was some of the cleanest editing, most engaging story telling and crisp animations I've seen in a long time, wonderful video, thank you Barley Sociable for making me care so much about something I had absolutely no knowledge of before clicking the video, incredible job please keep up the good work :)
Ah, yes. The old "Two bullets to the back of the head, arms tied behind back, tied to a concrete cinderblock on the bottom of a river" suicide method. Truly, the most traditional method of taking one's own life.
Barely: listen to this craziness! All Aussies in the comments section: yeah we know, every unsolved mystery in Australia is due to Police and Government corruption.
I mean their PM got lost while swimming, Their one of the most powerful men and one of the most prominent theoris were that he was a spy and swam to submarine and Then left for China. For God's sake who thought of that
Right? I watch a lot of true crime and the arm chair detectives think every single crime committed or mystery unsolved is due to THOSE CORRUPT POLICE, OMG IF THEY WOULD JUST DO THEIR JOBS...and I love how they all just repeat each other. So obnoxious..
"The victim was stabbed in the back and stuffed into a suitcase which was then thrown from a cliff. Clearly this was a suicide." I think that coroner was in somebody's pocket for sure.
@@InviWasTaken oddly, after death, the body got up, dug itself a hole, placed itself in, poured gasoline on itself, set itself ablaze, and after waiting for the flames to die down, got back up, and buried itself again Truly, this is a case of a man who WANTED to die :P
Here in the states we called that getting clintoned. Were by if you have any dirt or evidence against the Clinton's they send their personal hit man out to you and have you removed. This has been connected to over 56 people with the Clinton's but due to never having a suspect it's always ALWAYS listed as suicide. Just recently a former FBI agent that claimed to have had dirt on the Clinton's was shot in the head multiple times, had several stab wounds, the murder weapons were never found, yet his death is listed as suicide. And he died less than a few days after making his statement about the clintons.
I usually listen to the video but when you went through the coroner's conclusion on Robby's case my jaw dropped so hard I dropped what I was doing in disbelief. Did I hear that right? Suicide with chains behind his back? How did that make it into a statement... I'm floored.
Even worse bc they said his hands were bound and that the bindings were secured with a BOLT. No question that he was murdered and that the cops were paid off and corrupt.
Not the first time corrupt officials have conspired with drug traffickers. And, how in hell did that kid kill himself by locking his own hands behind his back? That’s a flagrant, direct and obvious lie. This guy Hand has a warped soul.
I thought I had seen most of the good mystery investigation channels on YT. Until I found this one yesterday. This is now hands down my favourite mystery investigation channel. It's so refreshing to see actual investigative journalism presented honestly. Keep up the amazing work!! 🏆
I totally agree, I wish he had a larger library but honestly I feel like he does so much to produce this level or quality of a video that it takes time so he isn't just pumping out half assed videos constantly to create a buzz. The ratio of the amount of his content to the number of his followers, in my opinion, is clear evidence of the fact that anyone who stumbles into his channel instantly decides to become a follower, I hope he continues to have success and continues to put out videos
I’ve never heard of a more obvious case of corruption than that Robby case. He saw a drug drop and was scared of a mafia group killing him and was then found weighed down with bricks in the water with his hands bound behind him. I’ve not seen a more stereotypical mafia killing than that. How that coroner got away with that is beyond me. That leads me to believe the narcotics theory is almost certainly true considering all the facts around this case. Additionally the Australians commenting on their police’s corruption makes me even more confident in the theory. This shit is wild!
Apparently the Aussies are the only first world nation with a police service more corrupt than the yanks. Direct all jokes about prison colonies to /dev/null
Real question is: Are you any better? If somebody gave unsolicited witnessship to your activities and you knew that for realtively normal thing you will be destroyed as human being...would you let it slide? Would you give witness and potentional snitch cookies and milk and give him warm hugs? Problem aint a thing you doing. Problems are people who constantly spying on you and trying to start something
It's scary to think that there is no trust or comfort to be had from law enforcement and government, they are often shown to be just as sinister as the criminals they claim to search for.
Netflix loves to throw in an extra episode of absolutes horse sh*t. It’ll be about the sinking of the Titanic- episode 4 what if aliens caused the ship crash! And then 60 mins of “alien experts” providing circumstantial highly suspect evidence.
Tbh; I prefer the graphics myself. As an animator (and a visual learner), i appreciate the time and detail that goes into each video's graphics. Keep doing whatcha do, it's awesome!
The graphics are nice, but lots of us want to consume the content while doing something else. So having graphics AND the content in a form where watching is not required is probably the best way to appeal to the most viewers
@@erict3728 exactly because I only have time for this kinda stuff at work but Ofcourse I can’t watch and work so listening to TH-cam is my preferred consumption
I'm always kind of shocked when I hear small South Australian towns being part of these big mysteries because I grew up around these areas (my Dad was born in Port Lincoln) and I've never heard of any of these cases
my man Barely never disappoints! regardless of the actual outcome and fate of the Patanela, the body and murdered teen-- it's grossly apparent these officials were only interested in covering up every aspect of the case. And the audacity to blame the victims is downright evil.
So, let me get this straight: Robby-Jo was found chained to the bottom of a river, CHAINED DOWN, and Derrick Hand was like, "Nah, bruh, he wasn't murdered!" Like, what?! C'mon, it's so obvious SOME SORT OF FOUL PLAY WAS INVOLVED! And, sure, the possibility it was a "prank gone wrong" is more plausible, but besides for the other evidence to suggest against this, who the heck is going to go out of their way to buy stuff to chain somebody down in a river?! Yeah, there's some stupid pranks out there, but my word that would take some dedication and presumably a good chunk of money too! And the idea that Robby-Jo chained himself down is ludicrous. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it kind of hard to CHAIN YOURSELF UP? Furthermore, even if Robby DID somehow chain himself up, how the heck is he going to get into the river?! Just fall in? He'd have to be close to the water to do that, and I'd figure that if he fell in, he wouldn't sink into the water that easily without some sort of help. Jeez, either that coroner is stupid, corrupt, or both!
Been checking the Channel atleast once a week to see if youtube stuffed up my notifications but alas they have not. Good work TH-cam, Great work as always Barely Sociable 👌
@@farkasmactavish it was actually a typo or maybe spell check idk. I meant "at last they have not" as in finally the TH-cam Notifications system didn't screw me over for once and give me a notification 2 days later lol.
Your production is really skyrocketing. Put some bangers together and pitch a show, dude. You could make it so cheap. You already do this all on your own. With other people doing your editing and storyboards and such you get more time to research. I think you're good and deserve success!
I love this channel so much. I get genuinely excited every time I see a new video notification. You deserve nat geo documentary-level funding. I’ve watched every video multiple times and learn more each time, there’s just so many details. You have the perfect voice and timbre to draw a listener in, you sound genuinely intrigued rather than sounding like you’re reading from a script, which is something I find is all to common in TH-cam documentaries. Thank you for your channel, and your slightly sociable channel as well. Keep up the incredible work!!
Even as an Australian I'd never heard of this before. Thankyou for another interesting episode. It's great to have a channel that looks for rarely known stories rather than just rehashing the same old stuff over and over again, eg, Dyatlov pass and all the American stuff etc in what seems to be a trend in quantity over quality for most TH-camrs these days. Can I suggest some other interesting Australian stories perhaps worth researching is; 1. The explorers Burke & Wills and their tragic expedition to cross Australia from South to North; 2. The terrible story of what happened on the shipwrecked Dutch ship Batavia; 3. And the French explorer Nicholas Baudin. He did amazing things but is rarely acknowledged, undeservedly so. Hopefully people from around the world can suggest some interesting cases from their countries. Love your work bud.
Man these two brothers are now exchanging interests. Slightly made videos on boats and 'the depths', and now Barely is makin 'em. Both are wonderful content creators.
This channel is a huge example of pleasure delaying. Instead of getting constant content we wait to get a dose of extremely well done content every so often.
Barely Sociable, I've been watching your videos since 2018 and I just gotta say, I love your work. The internet is full of sensationalists and trend riders that blow things out of proportion but your research is always so grounded. Please keep it up!
During the Robbie Jo story I was thinking to myself, "Alright, they're gonna try and say it was a prank but wouldn't it be wild if Hand called it suicide?" And then he fucking did. What a right piece of work.
that man was not even trying to hide his corruption, like if saying a boy somehow bolted his hands behind his back, then chained several concrete blocks and jumped in a creek by himself is some shit i dont even think i could make up, its unbelievably stupid
As an avid hiker/mountain climber I appreciate how you did have the text there indicating that Mallory may have reached the summit of Everest on his last expedition. That is truly one of the great mysteries of the twentieth century as to whether he did or not.
Born and raised in New Zealand and the absolute hoo ha around Edmund Hillary, I firmly believe Mallory got there first. All his belongings were found with his body except for the photo of his wife that he'd promised he'd leave at the summit if he made it.
@@asha4736 Yes, I would agree but the only thing that is troubling with that theory is the Second Step being hard for someone with the gear the duo possessed to ascend safely. If they ever find Andrew Irvine's body and he has the camera with the film (providing it is still intact and not too damaged), we will know for sure.
@@asha4736 The thing is, his wife could easily make up that story to give her dead husband prestige. The absence of evidence would always """prove""" Mallory would get there first. Absolutely nothing was found at the summit which would have been very strange, (no flag, no pickaxe, no photos). Would Mallory *really* summit and leave nothing to mark the achievement? What I do find strange though is the conflicting information about the rope Mallory was attached to. First I heard it was cut with a knife, then I heard it was snapped and the rope was not the kind that could hold a man's weight, which makes me wonder why they'd be using such a rope to begin with.
@@Dong_Harvey yeah since they used natural fiber rope the near century in the sun degraded the rope to such a state it was of no evidentiary value. I've also heard a theory that the chinese found irvines body with camera and sent it back to Beijing as a potential discredit to their "first up the north face" claim..but the story goes the film.was exposed and nothing could be seen in developed photos. They allegedly pushed the body down the mountain. Just another conspiracy theory though.

According to the book "The Coroner" which is the autobiography of Derrick Hand there was a NAVY submarine 5miles of the reported position of the missing ship but didn't see it on their radar. This would indicate that the ship maybe wasn't where they though they were. However I could not verify that independent from his own account.
I saw brief mentions about the investigation hinting at the possibility the ship just wasn't there, near botany bay, which is even more confusing. Considering they asked for directions.
@@BarelySociable It's certainly puzzling that an experienced sailor got the position of the ship wrong considering they had state of the art navigation equipment. But the submarine not seeing it on Radar, if accurate and substantiated, makes a strong case for the ship not being there.
@@neues3691 I remember reading they had a satnav. so getting lost??? If that's true maybe the skipper spoofed the location. But the main contingency once again is on the end of the guy who claimed a 17 year old chained himself to a river... Appreciate you letting me know this detail!

Just a couple of things: 1. Sydney is the capital of New South Wales, the premier (similar to a US Governor) who ran the state at the time was Nick Greiner who was forced to quit a couple of years later due to corruption. This may account for the local police not pursuing the matter off the New South Wales Coast and lack of apathy by the higher ups. 2. Up until late 1989 Queensland had an insanely corrupt government and police department. Bee-gah Can-bruh Mill-due-rah Anyway, another great video, keep up the good work. :)
With regard to #2, don't worry, we have corrupt government and police again already. Fitzgerald was appalled by it and moved to NSW. Crime and Corruption Commission is now staffed mostly by Police or ex-Police, and the Police are expected to investigate themselves now.
For me I like having things play off on the side as I do other things, like rn I also have Stardew Valley in a minimized window. Nicol was from Perth where the ship departed to sail to the opposite side of the country for 'vacation'. He gets off half way through the journey along with his skippers young daughter to 'take care of business'. This all happens right before the loss of the ship. You have to question possible insurance fraud. It's such a giant red flag getting off the ship right before disaster strikes. Also the lack of DNA testing on the body that washed up on shore. There are so many unanswered questions coming from every end.
Yes insurance fraud is a possible answer as well. Note they don't actually have to sink the boat, so they can double dip. Claim insurance and sell the boat off in another country. This would explain why the owner reacted so slowly at first. I do business with fisherman, there is one guy whose boat "sunk" at the dock twice.
DNA testing may not have been very reliable as the body was so badly decomposed. Sure you could probably do it but it may only marginally helpful- the dental records would have provided much better insight, which is why it's so damning that they were never reported on
Was thinking this. I don't know what the insurance pay outs are like but he did invest $30 000 into a search. He could have payed off the coroner as well. On the other hand, if the insurance pay out is $500 000 then $30 000 still leaves a lot left over. What do you do about the people on board tho? Were they in on it? Did some survive? To sail the ship at least the Skipper must have survived. But why would you pick up the two lads in Fremantle, if you could sail the ship anyways? It almost adds up for me but still so many questions.
@@justforthis3208 Insurance fraud would be way easier if the ship could be found. And the other crew mates would need to be murdered or disappear forever for a frankly piss-poor payoff for abandoning their life or committing a life-sentence felony. Insurance fraud doesn't add up for me, but I dont feel good about any of the theories
it blows my mind that corrupt people can abuse their power so blatantly and frequently with no fear of legal or professional consequences. The state coroner and the detective either got paid off by traffickers or there’s some other shady stuff going on. Ugh i hope the truth comes out soon in these cases.
There was a building site in Ely, UK, which was left half-finished for ages, and became a place where drug dealers congregated. I angrily came up with a conspiracy theory that the developer was being paid off to leave it unfinished and unsecured. Maybe I was more right than I thought.
@@worldcomicsreview354 It's possible but that's actually sorta the way construction goes lol, these companies get paid based on how long it takes them to build something, they have all the motivation in the world to let projects take as long as humanly possible, it's also just a complicated fucking industry with a lot of legal stuff going on, I remember the Silver Line(northern virginia segment of the DC metro) having a predicted finishing date of like 2012 and too this date like 40 ish percent of it is still not done and there's been almost zero progress for like 4 or 5 years.
@@jamesbailey6257here's how I'm picturing those conversations with those new york construction companies going when asked "why they still aren't finished yet?" I love that Barely is creating a current documented version of facts based on a myriad of older articles. This video is probably what will come up first in future internet searches for the Patanela. I hope Internet detectives out there will do a little digging!!
Wow, a mystery right in my backyard that I'd never heard of! I wouldn't be remotely surprised by a drug connection as we had a huge police corruption issue in NSW in the 70's & 80's... Derrick Hand is a name I remember well. And Nichols not reporting the boat missing for 11 days is easily explained with context... these were pre-cell phone & internet days, when we were reliant on prearranged meetings & landlines. Someone like Nichols would usually agree on a date, time & location to meet back up, but also have a Plan B in case the boat or Nichols was delayed. Given he wouldn't be able to contact the boat, it's likely that they'd prearranged to meet up at the boat's next destination in Queensland if they missed each other in Sydney... so when the Patanela didn't show up Nichols would assume that he'd catch up at the next port. Being out of contact for an extended period wasn't the cause for concern like it is now.
Why is it so damn interesting to hear the last few transmissions from missing craft? I guess philosophically they are the same thing as a 911 call, except sometimes (like in this case) more mundane, as in asking for directions. It gives an idea of the mindset, and leaves room for speculation. Well done as always B.S.!
I don't care how long I have to wait I will never miss a barely sociable episode. Since I first discovered the channel I binge watched everything And now I just wait feverishly for the next video

I would like to point out that adipocere (/adipose tissues) happens much more frequently I fresh, cold water, compared to salty warm water. Salts + mid ocean temperature heat help break down the fats and reduce the hardening effect. Bodies like that Swedish one are usually found at the bottom of (or at least very deep within) comparatively sterile, stagnant, and cold lakes. Lakes and bogs make for very very good preservatives, the ocean tends to eat your feet off and then toss you back on shore to finish rotting instead.

Hey Mr. Barely Sociable, I understand that it's probably annoying getting recommendations for videos all the time, but if you ever get a chance to talk about the Delphi murders in Indiana that would be really intriguing and possibly helpful to finding a suspect.

I'd love to see you put more of these cases that fall victim to corruption into the spotlight. Hopefully some good can come out of it, and they are very interesting. Also loving that you're increasing your already high standard of quality.
Hey man, absolutely loved the content. I wish you could cover these topics in the future (all are air crashes btw) 1) Chosonminhang Ilyushin Il-62 crash, the only known fatal North Korean Air crash which happened in Guinea 2) Angola Boeing 727 disappearance, pretty much was stolen and wasn’t found again 3) SA 295, fire brought down the plane but cause of fire unknown, many people believe that illicit arms/ explosives caused it which were transported by the SA government at the time due to strict sanctions. 4) Indian Air Force An-32 disappearance, pretty much a mh370, but just like that, nothing was ever found.
One of the first ever crashes of a civilian airliner was caused by an onboard fire. No black boxes back then, but eyewitnesses suggested it was at the rear, in the cargo area. Also somebody jumped out almost immediately. Possibly an attempt at sabotage gone wrong?
I would have to respectfully disagree that one can merely listen to these videos without missing anything. The editing is incredible and the graphics have a unique style.

As an Aussie, this is a fascinating tale indeed, thoroughly enjoyed it. If you want to research another mystery ship and Australia’s inaction, there is the distress call received from somewhere near Antarctica at the same time as the Malaysian Airlines flight disappeared. Our government at the time wrote it off as a fishing boat, and sent no one, which considering just how awesome our Navy Search and Rescue have been when other sailors stranded themselves in the Southern Ocean, and the fact that we are obliged to respond to an SOS, struck me as rather odd. Congratulations on nailing Moruya by the way!! It seems very likely to me that the ship was involved in criminal activity (probably drug related) after it's disappearance, and also that the cops knew all about it. It was my experience back in the the 80s that the cops were so corrupt, that if they themselves were not involved in the specific drug related crimes, they are certainly being paid off by the drug overlords to back off / cover it up. The cops in the part of Sydney where I grew up were the ones who controlled the drug traffic, and anyone they caught trying to compete with them ended up working for them. This went very high up the Police hierarchy at that time. Diazepam really shouldn't be used for sleep issues though, as it can cause serious dependence and the withdrawals (that can set in waaaaay faster than one would expect from just a small period of continuous use) can be dangerous, even deadly. Glad you have something that works, but be careful especially mixing it with other meds and/or alcohol, as I have lost friends to it and it is really easy to stop breathing under its effects when mixed with other things. It might be an idea to see if you can slowly transition to something non-narcotic and less dangerous, but that's your deal. Even short term usage isn't something I've seen studied too heavily in am academic setting. The main issue is just how dangerous it can be with just a couple drops too much, not to mention the less friendly usages on others that prevent it from probably ever being a chemical/medicine that is legally and/or commercially available. The ocean being somewhat unpredictable makes me assume it’ll always be a guestination but rather an educated guestimation
Honestly prolly not unfortunately, the only hard evidence that ever showed up was maybe that body which has well over a 50/50 chance of not being Calvin's to begin with and if the corruption was rampant enough to get away with calling a cartoon style mafia killing a suicide there's no way those dental records and likely even body still exist. And pretty much everything else is just gone, that ship was def hijacked by drug runners. It's either been changed visually significantly, destroyed intentional or unintentional nowhere near the orginial site, or impounded but a foreign government under a separate registration, maybe even sold off legitimately.

As an Aussie, it's no wonder this was handeled poorly by the Police. Our prime minister in 1967 straight up took a swim in the sea near Portsea, Victoria and his body has never been recovered. Our. Own. PM.
Heard about that before... Honestly makes a lot more sense now...
Dude went for a swim and just dipped
He was Epstei- ah, I mean "Holt'd"

It is still corrupt.
Good example was with friendlyjordies
Yeah theres still quite a lot of corruption going on. Less obvious, maybe. But it’s there.
It's still thoroughly corrupt.

As an Aussie who lived in Australia at this time, the levels of corruption of the Aussie police was insane.
Just look it up.

It's not just incompetence, it was a full-blown ring of deep corruption.
Even clean cops were targeted.

Theres some great podcasts about tons of missing person or murder cases that weren’t solved due to corrupt police
I have listened to Miranda O'Hare pronounce Canberra as "Can-bruh"

I’ve never heard of a more obvious case of corruption than that Robby case. He saw a drug drop and was scared of a mafia group killing him and was then found weighed down with bricks in the water with his hands bound behind him. I’ve not seen a more stereotypical mafia killing than that. How that coroner got away with that is beyond me. That leads me to believe the narcotics theory is almost certainly true considering all the facts around this case. Additionally the Australians commenting on their police’s corruption makes me even more confident in the theory. This shit is wild!

I get some people just listen to these, but really do appreciate the visuals. I imagine they're 75+% of the work
For me I like having things play off on the side as I do other things, like rn I also have Stardew Valley in a minimized window. I watch as well as play then, but I like when it's stuff I don't have to be actively watching to get everything. But then when things are only audio my ADHD just can't focus, and the visuals are also well done here.
Instead of audible, check your local library for their own audio-book programs that are 100% free, 100% of the time. Support your local resources, not some conglomerate that's responsible for a lot of human suffering and unfair taxation laws. ❤️
Will most definitely look into this. Thank you!!
Yeah!
You will get a lot more people to adjust your behavior if you stop using meaningless buzzwords.

Let me just grab my Walkman and we'll be set I'll think I'll check out that brand new book that just came out called the hobbit it's had solid reviews
I can't stress enough about how much I love these videos of yours. Amazing edit as always. I'm glad I found your channel a year ago...
Sure you could probably do it but it may only marginally helpful- the dental records would have provided much better insight, which is why it's so damning that they were never reported on
DNA testing didnt exist yet
It's basically how all governments and public institutions work.
@@jamesbailey6257here's how I'm picturing those conversations with those new york construction companies going when asked "why they still aren't finished yet?" "Look we're working on it me and my brothers Jammy,Joe,Janny,Moe, and Johnson over here and we're taking our lunch break........for the next uhhhhh 7 mayber 10 years and we'll maybe finish about 5% percent of it Okay? OK good But mean time we are renting out all the unfinished parts to some drug traffickers and the mafia to use!😁"
@@jamesbailey6257Where I am from construction efforts are done by stages, if you don’t have money to pay for the next stage of construction the construction efforts just stop. They probably have finance problems rather than a conspiracy.
I wonder how many big historic mysteries are unsolved and will never be solved due to police incompetence/corruption. If this channel and buzzfeed unsolved have shown me anything the answer is a lot.
Fr cops are just useless investigation-wise
You watch buzzfeed lmao
@@crayon3645 can vouch for this I hate buzz feed but their unsolved channel is quite good. Very thorough and unbiased research. They’ve got some interesting stuff over there
@@crayon3645 I don't know about that, I just looked at the channel and its looks like a lot of clickbait garbage. Ghosts, demonic places, bigfoot, conspiracy theories, urban legends, etc.
I am glad you like their channel though.
@Pineapple Head maybe six or seven years ago I would have a greed with you but not today
I love that Barely is creating a current documented version of facts based on a myriad of older articles.
Love this, so well put together. Really loving the extra mile you are going with the animations.
The intro!!
I know it's been a while since this was uploaded but I wanted to commend you, Barely Sociable, for your deep dive into this case! Great job and thank you for bringing attention to this!
I listen to 90 percent of content on TH-cam while at work. Channels like yours get me through the week!
damn Sociable, the quality on this video is absolutely unmatched, you seriously stepped it up!! (not saying the previous ones were bad in any way)
this is amazing stuff, no clickbait mystery drama, but a well researched documentary
Damn time flies by, I remember it like yesterday when you had only few thousand subs and your first videos was popping up. People were like wtf where did this great content creator came from. You surprised all of us
Barley sociable is the definition of quality of quantity he doesn’t release videos very frequently but when he does you know your in for a treat keep up the great work!!!
Having been here since a week or so after your first video, I’ve just got to say how amazing it’s been to see your evolution throughout your time here and I’m so excited to see more from you in the future. Fantastic work as always
Once again your documentaries are paced perfectly, introducing evidence in such a way that it feels like I’m investigating along as the audience. Hella good work my dude.
Wow … the level of research you have gone into & the added information you’ve turned up… in not just this case but in your others too is simply incredible. That people like Hands can get away with such blatantly corrupt behaviour & still walk the streets without being lynched is just mind blowing to me..!
I can only hope that destiny took care him…😒
Thank you so much for bring all these revelations & hidden injustices to light…More power to you. Pls keep this up..!!
Hey Mr. Barely Sociable, I understand that it's probably annoying getting recommendations for videos all the time, but if you ever get a chance to talk about the Delphi murders in Indiana that would be really intriguing and possibly helpful to finding a suspect.
Just want to thank you for making these videos. Most of the other Unsolved Mystery TH-camrs are hacks who just want to churn out as much content as possible. Yours are a notch or three above.
I'd love to see you put more of these cases that fall victim to corruption into the spotlight. Hopefully some good can come out of it, and they are very interesting.
Also loving that you're increasing your already high standard of quality.
Another banger, bro. You're the one channel on here, that I genuinely look forward to your uploads. Keep doing what you're doing.
Hey man, absolutely loved the content. I wish you could cover these topics in the future (all are air crashes btw)
1) Chosonminhang Ilyushin Il-62 crash, the only known fatal North Korean Air crash which happened in Guinea
2) Angola Boeing 727 disappearance, pretty much was stolen and wasn’t found again
3) SA 295, fire brought down the plane but cause of fire unknown, many people believe that illicit arms/ explosives caused it which were transported by the SA government at the time due to strict sanctions.
4) Indian Air Force An-32 disappearance, pretty much a mh370, but just like that, nothing was ever found.
Hm, Im noticing a theme here lol
One of the first ever crashes of a civilian airliner was caused by an onboard fire. No black boxes back then, but eyewitnesses suggested it was at the rear, in the cargo area. Also somebody jumped out almost immediately. Possibly an attempt at sabotage gone wrong?
I would have to respectfully disagree that one can merely listen to these videos without missing anything. The editing is incredible and the graphics have a unique style.
This is a top tier video, good sir! Structure, production values, narration, everything. I was fascinated. Good stuff.
Why are the local authorities so terrible in so many of these types of stories? Ugh.
So many pressed comments re pronunciation from the peanut gallery, get a Melbourne-ian, a Western Australian, and a Queenslander in a room together and hear the stark differences. Barely smashed it 👏🏻
Awesome video, Barely! Cheers for a spotlight on a wild Aussie case
Love your work, Mate!
wow, the quality of this is amazing. Great story and fantastic presentation. Thanks for all the hard work!
Honestly the idea to write scripts that are easy to listen to kinda blends into making these stories available as podcasts, no? Personally, I would totally listen to these stories on Spotify while on the subway or something and watch the videos afterwards to get the visuals to it as well. Might be an idea to reach a broader audience too :) as always, brilliant work on taking apart this story and reconstructing it in such a captivating way! Looking forward to the next one :)
Big ups! I'd do the same, listen when able and catch up on visuals later.
Absolutely love your work. Attention to detail, cadence in delivery is fantastic. I listen to you while I'm working the loading docks. You help the day go by so much smoother, and interesting.
That title screen with the music is insane. Goosebumps. Really sets the mood for the whole doc.
Man I am just so glad to see an upload from my favorite. It's a good day when Barely uploads.
Been waiting on this to drop for while, and as always it exceeded expectations! Great work on the 3d graphics
In Aussie lingo it’s pronounced Wilson’s Promontry, Beega and Canbra..just cos we like to mess with foreigners I think...Third one of your docs ive watched today, new sub. And greetings from 🇦🇺🦘🐨
You’ll probably never see this but I really enjoy your videos and your music ideas! Keep up the awesome work, your production value keeps going up and up! We have no problem waiting for awesome content.
Your channel doesn’t get near the credit or recognition it deserves. Great work, love the videos.
Hey, I was just wondering if you would do a very extensive video celebrating your soon to be 1 million subscribers. I was thinking maybe an one hour or so video, because I just can't get enough of your videos, honestly:)
You normally pay for this type of quality content. Many thanks Sociable!
I love this channel so much.
All the effort and hard work you do is appreciated
Hunter! You make a solid product. Thank you for your livestreams in 2019/early 2020. Those got me through Rough times and still love your work to this day! Hope you're doing well my guy.
I have watched a crap load of mystery TH-cam channels on a daily basis, this is by far the best channel in this particular genre. I found this channel yesterday and I just can’t stop binging since! 👍👍👍👍
Your videos are among the most professionally produced in this genre! Keep up the good work!
Your videos have higher production value then most movies out there.
Love what you do.
Peace!
As an aside:
Most Aussies pronounce Canberra, Cambra - because we're lazy
Terrigal as Terrigul
Bega as Beega and
you pronounced Airlie Beach perfectly
And it's boy for buoy
Gotta WATCH the content, missing out on so much good work if you just listen
Why not both lol
You see - only people watching are able to read your comment
Agreed 👍

Definitely shows 2 of man's most wonderful character traits - corruption and gross negligence at doing one's job ! Though it may bring no comfort to the family and friends of those lost no one is getting away with anything. Some may avoid judgement while in these vessels we call a body...."it is appointed man to die once . After that judgement ".
It is so nice that you haven't started shortening your vids to keep up with the demands of the all powerful Algorithm. As long as you keep making this kind of great content we will keep watching it.
Hell yes! I knew there was a reason I was anxious and couldn't sleep. Haha. Thanks, Barely Sociable, I'm looking forward to watching. 😎
Take a diazepam :P (seriously see your doctor for some help with sleep. I ignored it and it fucked my life up)
@@retinapeg1846 I 'm here for the same reasons at 3:40 in the morning, but no sleep aids for me sadly.
I just want others to be careful because many don't know how dangerous it and other benzodiazepines can be. Take care!
@@jeremysmith4620 Absolutely. Short term use only.
GHB works pretty well too, but sadly, it is illegal :( . never mix benzos/alcohol/ghb as suggested above. GL.
@@mrmookypooky as a "recreational user" from a long time ago, I would say GHB does indeed have VERY intense properties that certainly relax the user, sometimes a bit too much. Dosage can be tricky and long term effects of use isn't something I'm aware that there are many scientific studies on, if any. Even short term usage isn't something I've seen studied too heavily in am academic setting.
The main issue is just how dangerous it can be with just a couple drops too much, not to mention the less friendly usages on others that prevent it from probably ever being a chemical/medicine that is legally and/or commercially available.
But in my partying days I loved it. I also loved smack, so my former opinion isn't very valid or advisable. Just if you do use it start out VERY low, DO NOT drink with it, have a sober friend nearby to babysit you that you trust, and wait a long time (hours) before any attempt to redose. It's all about harm reduction with anything.
🤯 Wild, unsettling story. Great in-depth video. Thanks, Barely Sociable.
Unheard of ...in before 400 likes !!
Cheers for alll the time and effort you put in to your documentaries.
Peace from the UK.
The way your able to give this entire video a truly unique and ominous feeling really is amazing...not an easy feat to do it this strong...just right id say....well done mates
I’m just glad that studies of decomp at sea is actually being relatively week researched into. There are so many factors to consider and the more it’s studied the more accurately we’ll be able to discover details in cases like these. The ocean being somewhat unpredictable makes me assume it’ll always be a guestination but rather an educated guestimation
I feel like there’ll be a follow up to this story in 5-10 years, I’d be interested to see what happens!
Not if corruption is endemic
Honestly prolly not unfortunately, the only hard evidence that ever showed up was maybe that body which has well over a 50/50 chance of not being Calvin's to begin with and if the corruption was rampant enough to get away with calling a cartoon style mafia killing a suicide there's no way those dental records and likely even body still exist. And pretty much everything else is just gone, that ship was def hijacked by drug runners. It's either been changed visually significantly, destroyed intentional or unintentional nowhere near the orginial site, or impounded but a foreign government under a separate registration, maybe even sold off legitimately.
Dang great work yet again brother! I swear you do better, more critically thought out documentaries then anyone else out there, and I mean anyone! Love watching your videos keep up the great work!
Great vid. Australia was rife with corrupt cops and other officials in the 80s so your conclusion is sound. I'd like to offer help with future Australian pronunciation. There's a few place names here which are said incorrectly: Wilson's Prom, Bega, Canberra, Terrigal. You surprisingly got Eucla right tho lol
Wilson's Promintary - Wilson's (Prom-an-tree)
Bega - (Bee-ga)
Canberra (Can-bruh)
Terrigal - (Terror-gull)
Mildura - (Mill-juror)
those are the ones I caught
Australia was a Penal Colony so, you can take Aussie out of the Penal but you can't take out the Penal out of the Aussie
Either this was a botched hijacking or, if the wealthy couple should have been in that boat but stayed at home that day, then it’s clearly a hit .
Either way, this case had “foul play” written all over it.
