    I'm actually shocked that this video doesn't have more likes and views after 2 years. You gave a complete set of instructions. Safety, presentation, etc. This is easily one of the best instructional fishing videos I've seen. Thank you. I've always been a largemouth fishing guy and want to get into striper fishing and I just bought some Sebile Magic Swimmers prior to seeing this.

    Hi Jasper, back again. I reviewed your whole video this morning as I liked it so much. Your talk on SAFETY is great. Very important. I don't think a lot of fishermen realize what can happen until it happens. I once had a lure hung up on a rock. I cranked the drag and pulled hard. The lure let go and zzzZZZOW!!!! Shot by my face like a bullet. Maybe 2" from my face. I've been shot at so a know what a bullet sounds like and this was close. Out alone on my boat, I could have had multiple trebles in my face or in my eye. That freaked me out for sure, man. It's only natural when you're fighting a fish you're not thinking about safety. I am glad you reminded me to not have the lure come straight in. I haven't had a hook thru my thumb but I had a wood splinter through my thumb. I was pounding a stake with a 2lb hammer when the damn thing exploded. I didn't have gloves on - idiot. Right thru my left thumb. I tried to pull the splinter out with pliers. No way. Too much pain. Finally, I bit the bullet and went to get my heavy vice-grips, clamped them on hard, took a deep breath, and yanked! AAAAAG! They probably heard my scream in the next county, but the splinter was out. 2" long. No hospital. Didn't want to waste the time. I can't image the same thing happen with a barbed fish hook. Safety First! Hey - pardon my long comments. In my professional life, I was a technical writer. I also am also a storyteller. And fishermen trade stories, right? Most of which have SOME grain of truth in them-right? So I write.

    Hi Jasper. I think your video is great! Well done, detailed, informative. Your delivery is lively. Love it! I'm going to subscribe. I fished the canal 35 years ago when I first started surf fishing. I fished it 4 times. Back then I was primary a bait fisherman. I had real problems with the canal currents keeping bait on the bottom. I tried at night with eels which seemed better but no hits. So I gave up on the canal. However, I have to say that I hooked the biggest bass I ever hooked at the Marine Academy pier. Back then I had 20lb mono. there was no braid or even florocarbon line. The bass and I had a battle for a minute until the line broke. The last 50' of my line looked like someone took a potato peeler to it! Little pieces of it curled up everywhere. I have never seen anything like it before or since! That bass wrapped my line around every rock in the canal! Sheesh! I said. You can have this canal stuff. I went back to the Lower Cape and Wellfleet and Race Point where I was much more successful and pulled in some nice fish. Now the lower Cape is infested with seals eating all the fish. They have pretty much ruined the surf fishing up there. I see the technique of canal fishing has changed. Seeing your video (and others) is inspiring me to give it another go. Next year. I'm retired now so I have more time to put in learning the canal. So I will subscribe and bone up. I see your setup is pretty much identical to mine. I still have my 11' Penn surf rod which is so old that the 2 pieces fused together and now its a one piece rod! I have a Penn Battle II with 50 lb. braid. I've worn out 2 other Penn reels. And I also use Seagar 40 or 50 lb floro leader. Great quality line. A uni to uni know to tie them together. A guy I met 2 years ago told me how to fish soft plastics in the canal so I want to try that also. I've learned a lot about surf fishing in the last 35 years. Going back to the canal, I'd no longer be a newbie. I think it would be a whole 'nother ball game for me. Good luck to you. Thanks.

    Thanks for the information! it defeinty helped us out! Refreshing for the break down. Don't get me wrong watching Stripers Kill top water bait is sick, but the break down step by step is so much more rewarding. Keep spreading that knowledge! And some friendly advice don't apologize about the delay, it keeps your fans on the edge of their seats, waiting and anticipating more tips and knowledge to bring them to the next level, and that much closer to catching a sea cow of their own!!!

    Feather the line on the spool just before it hits the water. Helps to prevent hook fouling ! They're supposed to be twitched in short jerks, so it spins in a 180° semi circle, plus you have the bait in the strike zone longer !

But above all if this video means you never need to experience one of these flying at your face then its all worth it! I can certainly bet if you hook enough of them you'll have one spit it and send it flying and I bet you'll prob say "now I really get it!" def not a fun experience and can certainly ruin a trip. I really enjoy your reviews. You recommend the Rosco #6HD split rings which are rated for 125 pounds, for the swimmer lures. In order to keep the lure hook rig more compact to reduce tangling, would toy recommend the new 4XXHD. They are rated for 140 lbs. Are they too small to accommodate the swivel and hook set up?

    okay so I just went on a 9-hour fishing trip to the canal using this lure and others types, using it in a manner exactly the way that you shown on the video and I did not even get a swirl. There were people around me that we're catching little guys and maybe every once in awhile somebody got a striper using chunk bait but I didn't get hit once. It's pretty aggravating
    Because the action looks so sweet I only had a white one and I switched to a couple of more lifelike pencil poppers but nothing was grabbing anything today. I've had such shit luck lately trying to catch bass I'm doing everything people are saying to do yet I don't know if it's because I am always coming there at the wrong time or if it's not the right season I don't really know. Are there any groups or information Outlets I can go to to get spots on catching bass in Massachusetts? I really would like to catch one before the season ends. At least one for crying out loud I'll even buy some more of these magic swimmers in different colors whatever I got to do everybody swears by these and I can see why I watched other videos of people smacking huge 40-lb Bass in the canal.
    kind of a first-time Fisher, so I guess I'm a little inexperienced but it's pretty disappointing.

      Sparks IBEW it’s fishing man. I would get skunked more than I caught for a long long time. Your best bet is learn the tides get familiar with how to read the tide charts. Target low tide and slower currents. Also target first light. I’m talking in your spot FIRST light. So if the sunrise is 5am be there for 4. One day you’re timing will line up and it will be on fire. You could be doing everything right and they just might not be there due to lack of bait. Things we cannot control. You could be going at high tide and the currents could be ripping. The tide charts will tell you the time. When the targets I’m suggesting line up with first light your chances are getting much better. I live an hour and half away and have made dozens of not hundreds of drives with no luck. Stick with it and one day when you least expect it, you’ll be able to throw a hockey puck with trebles and catch. It’s probably not your technique at all. It’s timing, time, and fish now. Stay at it and keep me posted.

      I know there's this thing about not giving away fishing spots to other people lol but where in the canal do you typically go?
      And Do you bike till you see bait fish, or stick to one spot?
      Thanks again, and If one day I get the timing right and the planets align and I rip my first monster from the canal, I'll have a beer in your honor 🍻

      @@matthewdacosta8630 Theres a map you can find online. and I think canal bait and tackle sells it. Scour the internet a bit until you find it. thats a great place to start to get familiar with the main spots. Usually I stay put, but if theres nothing going on when I know my timing is right ill move a little to try to switch stuff up. If you see the bait at your feet stay put! I stay away from the places everyone typically goes Pole 20, under the bridges, gallow. I like to find my own spots, and fish them to death. I strongly believe and encourage half of the "catching" is done at home. What I mean is getting educated on wind, tide, CURRENT, weather. It really has nothing to do with the "Spots" and everything to do with the science. Once you have a few producing locations if the science and weather aligns they will produce again. Once you understand the fish a bit more and why they should be there its about putting in the quality time vs just putting in the time. Its about not wasting your time and being productive. This leads to less frustration. Keep at it man. You have the right mindset, now think outside the box. Good luck!

  • @matthewfeit9046
    @matthewfeit9046 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Jasper,
    In the video you mention that you leave the split ring on for better swimming action. Do you tie direct or are you using a TA clip?
    Also, you suggest a 6500 and a 10000 series size reel for the canal. That’s a big difference .
    My everyday set up for plugging is a 9ft st croix avid surf rod rated medium power / moderate-fast action / 10-20lb / 1-4 oz. I pair this with a Penn Slammer 3 5500 with 40lb Power Pro.
    I realize this does not provide enough backbone for the canal.
    I was thinking about buying the 10’ 6” St. Croix MOJO surf rod which is rated med-heavy Power / mod-fast action / 12-25lb / 2-6 oz
    Thoughts?
    I was planning on pairing it with either the penn slammer 3 6500 or the penn slammer 3 7500. While the 7500 is heavier it can hold significantly more 50lb test braid. Is 40lb braid not suggested?How many yards do you recommend ?
    My bait rod is a tsunami airwave 11’ rated 20-50lb with a suggested lure weight of 4-8 ounces. On this I have 8000 series baitrunner. Would this be better for the canal?
    Thanks.

    • @jaspercoutu489
      @jaspercoutu489  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matthew Feit i use a TA clip i rarely tie direct because i like to switch plugs real fast. I think i might have meant 8500 series or 10,000. But your tsunami is probably the perfect setup for the canal and 40lb is enough for sure but i Fish 50lb and 60lb with a 40lb floro leader just because I know what swims through the canal and i want to make sure it ends up in my hands! I hope this helps man don’t overthink too much! Try what works best for you but this plug is around 5oz so something rated to 6 is probably minimum what i would throw this with! Keep em tight and keep me posted!

      Jasper Coutu Interesting. A little off topic for this post but do you remove the split ring on the SP Minnow?
      Quality footage and info btw.

    • @jaspercoutu489
      @jaspercoutu489  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matthew Feit the only plug I do not use a split ring on is really the pencil popper and darters. Because i want to control the action of the Pencil popper and the darters a different animal. But a lot of the times that a lure has its own action like an SP minnow and a magic swimmer i feel like the split rings allows the lure to “do its thing” or Work the way it wants and when i tie direct or don’t use a split ring I’m limiting its action. I’m sure it’s just personal preference but it’s just my own personal thought process.

    I'm wanting to come up to fish the canal in a week or two but had some questions if you don't answering. I am a bass fisherman, don't sigh, haha so I have swimbait gear. I don't want to have to buy a complete new setup so I was wondering if I could get by with my swimbait gear. It seems like everyone is throwing spinning outfits too. The setup I want to bring is a 7'11" XH rated for lures from 8-16" paired with a Shimano Cardiff 300. I'll swap out the line but would this cut it? How come no one uses baitcasting gear? Baits of choice were going to be Megabass I-slide, Cl8 bait 9" trout swimbaits, and my 8" Lunker Punker. Again, these are all largemouth stuff but I think they would work? I'm willing to pick up other baits when I'm there too though.

    • @jaspercoutu489
      @jaspercoutu489  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Robert, you absolutely could use this in the rip! Just vary your speed and let the current and waves do the work and you should see the bass waiting throughout the rip for bait to be kicked up! As far as price 1 sebile is $25 if you follow the link in the description the price is $25-$29 for 3!!! knock offs. So you're getting 3 for almost the price of 1 sebile. Hope this helps to clear things up, good luck and keep an eye out for more videos soon!

    Hey bro curious on what your setup is from tip to tail on the rod, do you use barrels and what knots do you use to connect braid to barrel then to the clip etc. thanks !

    • @mandofisher70
      @mandofisher70 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jasper did not reply to you, Mike? First, use a florocarbon leader, like 40 or 50 lb. to your clip. Tie the Floro leader to your braid using an FG knot, or a UNI to UNI knot. That's the one I use. There are tutorials for these 2 knots on you Tube. Also there is an Alberto knot for the same function. Since my memory is like swiss cheeze, all I can remember is the uni to uni knot. Good question. I would also like to know what reel and rod Jasper uses. I still have my old Penn 11' surf rod. I've thrown hi-lo bait rigs with up to 6 oz sinkers and it's still intact. It used to be a 2 piece rod. So much salt and corrosion got into the break I can't separate the 2 pieces anymore. Now its a 1 piece rod! Its at least 20 years old. I always used PENN reels and bought a Battle 2 a few years ago and put 50 lb braid on it. It's fine. In preparing for an offshore trip I got a Shimano Sargosa 10000 with 80 lb. braid. That is overkill for the canal but I really like the Shimano reels. Maybe a 6000 or 7000? I would be interested in what Jasper would think. Van Stalls and Stellas are great reels of course, but i don't have that kind of $$$.

    Dont you know about the Storm kick stick? I use them @ $6ea. and mod them with shot for diff sinking rates, they come as a surface roller and swim as good if not better than the knock off sebiles. They also come with suitable hardware that doesnt need to be replaced for big bassin. Ill be posting a video in the winter of how to mod them, give em a try and grab some spray paint

      MillhouseMod I actually do know about them and still prefer these over them. It’s just my opinion and what I️ prefer. I think the materials better, and I don’t need to modify them. Also I️ would 100% still swap their hooks for VMC but i do that with everything. Not that the storms are bad I just think these are easier and I’ve never had a problem pulling pigs with my knock offs. But thanks for the feedback love to hear what guys are throwing!

    What do you think about removing the back hook and using a barrel swivel to extend out the front hook? Will that mess up the action?

    • @jaspercoutu489
      @jaspercoutu489  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chase Clarke just my opinion and I know other guys might disagree but I've really never had an issue. The bass will hit the plug in the middle and I would think it might mess the action up a bit but I'd have more of a concern of that hook flipping around and getting stuck or hooking into one of the 3 sections. Just my advice, don't over think there's 6 hooks on that plug and you only need 1 to bury into a cheek. I like those odds. However I am 100% all for trying new things! I would love to see you try it and let us know if you see a difference good or bad! Then I can at least make a more educated opinion! Keep me tight my friend and thanks for the comment!

    Hey Jasper... Question-What's your opinion on the size(190mm) of the "knock-off" magic swimmers?

    • @jaspercoutu489
      @jaspercoutu489  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Walter Hynson so I've used them and I wish they worked for me when I did. It was 2 seasons ago maybe when I bought them and they swam almost to the point where they were unusable however I spoke with a guy at a tackle shop and he said they had a problem with the molds now I can't imagine they still would have the issue but I have not purchased again so I can't comment fully. What I can say is for that size if they swam correct they would be perfect to save some money and do the same thing a sebile does. That said you'd just have to give them a go or next time I see them I'll buy one and report back. I would def make room in my bag for one! Thanks Walter! Keep em tight!!

    I've found the EBay swimmers to almost be duds half the time. The tolerances are way off and the plug won't pivot right.
    I'm doing a little side project using an OG Magic Swimmer before they were taken off the shelves and "upgraded" a couple years ago....which really translates to nobody wanted to pay $35 for a plug so they dumbed the down the materials.
    I've put a brand new 9" MS next to the older model 9" with the red head/white body. Every hanger from the nose to the hook hangers is noticeably smaller gauge wire. The body plastic is super thin walled compared to the old one and you could blindfold yourself Pepsi challenge that shit just on feel alone. The knock offs even feel more stout.
    After losing the fish of a lifetime when the forward belly hanger was ripped out of a 9" Ghost I decided to buy two of the old models for $30 (Spanish Mackerel & Redhead). I punched a hole in the back and pumped about half the forward section with 5500 psi Epoxy which will completely envelope the small wire assembly attached to the hanger. I also put epoxy over the nose hanger and belly hanger and used a dremel to shave it down and punch a hole through it.
    I also converted the Spanish mackerel model to a traditional mackerel pattern and while I used to run a 5/0 4x VMC on the forward hanger and a 4/0 on the middle, and used two connected split rings to allow for some rotation without increase the length, on the 2 that I'm experimenting on to handle trophy fish I decided to run a set of 300lb Owner split rings, an AFW #1 510 pound swivel, and an Owner 7x , 4/0 (which is bigger than a VMC 5/0 but with a shorter shank to reduce length).
    So far the only downside is that the Owner treble hook is so sharp it will dig into the body on a cast and foul the plug. Action remains the same, hook up percentage has gone down somewhat (I'll feel more hits and misses opposed to pretty much guaranteed hookups), but for the first time I landed a 44lb Striper on a Magic Swimmer with an aggressive drag and the plug didn't flinch. The epoxy has not been phased nor reduced, and while I'll still have my old stand by double hook setups with the dual split rings per hanger, when there are fish the size of the ones we've had the last few weeks, and I want to have full confidence, it's fun knowing I have that option.
    Thanks for the video man. I'll be posting one soon going over what I did to bank a tank of a Magic Swimmer!

    • @jaspercoutu489
      @jaspercoutu489  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dan Evan def agree on the previous years however this year they seem to be much better. I like them even more than the new sebiles because the 3 sections are a bit more spaced out. If you look at the new sebiles they are so tight together they offer little room to swim. That said I've only had 1 bad swimmer come in from ebay this year and they replaced it for me free of charge, and shipped for free. Now I touch on in the video the sebiles swim more "consistently" than the knock offs but that's the trade off with price. 100% agree but I do feel confident in promoting these. I caught over 3 dozen stripers yesterday on 4 different knock offs. The bass certainly didn't seem to notice 😋 All ebay swimmers. Give them another try! Maybe you'll have some better luck! Tight lines!!!

  • @vsonic86
    @vsonic86 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    So you reel it slow? Because some guys told me to burn it as soon as possible. Do you have to let it sink to the very bottom and then start crank? Does it make any difference at all if you using the canal version rather the original Sebile version?

    • @jaspercoutu489
      @jaspercoutu489  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      vsonic86 great question! but no once it hits the water start the retrieve! You want it in the top 1 foot of water and that slow retrieve will allow it to sink into that sweet spot.

    • @jaspercoutu489
      @jaspercoutu489  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      vsonic86 really just the price in my opinion. Now the knock offs will swim inconsistent. Meaning that some swim better then others so before you buy give them a good once over and make sure they're nice and loose you want the freedom for them to move! But I've had only a few that don't swim as good as a real sebile. If you don't care about the price or the fact there is a very high chance you will loose that $25 plug then go with the real deal they are reliable but if you fish a lot, go with the knock offs. Just my opinion. Make sure you comment when you hook a big one on a MS!!!

    • @mandofisher70
      @mandofisher70 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Peter, I got a Tsunami Trophy rod last year and a saragosa 10000 but it was a for a offshore trip to cast to mahi-mahi and tuna. Handles 2-8oz lures and 50-100lb line. But it was not a surf rod. It was a boat casting rod. I went to Goose Hummock shop in Orleans for expert advice. I knew I was going to pay big bucks so I just bent over. Unfortunately a hurricane, then a nor'easter cancelled the trip. The salesman matched up the 10000 to the rod after I explained what I was trying to do. I put 80lb braid on it. Jasper links above to a Tsunami Airwave 12' Surf Rod TSAWSS-1202XH. Handles 4-8oz. Sounds like a surf version of my boat rod. The Tsunami rods are reasonably priced. I think mine was around $100. Amazon is charging $174.99 for the surf rod. I still have my Penn Big Gamefisher 11' med-heavy rod. It's lasted 25 years and welded itself together. If it ever breaks, I would probably go with the Tsunami Trophy.

      Rad Reeling Fishing there are three hook hangers on this plug the one on the tail is not required and 99% of the guys that fish around here with MS will not have a tail hook. It does more damage than good! You do not lost any strikes because typically the bass with hit this in the middle and commit to it I hope this helps!!!

    What the hell,mine floats.I have the 9 (seems more like 9.5 - 10 inches) and it's a knock off but the saleslady told me it was made in the same factory.Are they supposed to float?It is white like the one here and has two treble hooks - one in front one in back and I love how it moves but I need to lower my rod tip down to the water level to keep it a few inches below the surface on retrieve.Anybody know anything about this?
