11:12 Mal kept the gun pointed at the captain, and the captain apparently didn't want Serenity bad enough to risk a bullet. This has always been my favorite episode. Since no one else has mentioned the big red button story yet, I will. Alan Tudyk took the big red button home with him. When the show was cancelled, Joss Whedon was trying to find another network to pick up the show, but he wasn't having much luck, the cast was being hired for other roles, so he felt like they were moving on, and he was thinking of letting it go. Alan went to visit Joss, who wasn't at home, but he left the big red button on his table with a note that read, "When your miracle gets here, just hit the button.". It gave Joss the encouragement he needed to keep fighting for Firefly and it eventually lead to the movie.
My full break down of episodes. 3 Favorite Out of Gas; War Stories; Objects in Space 3 Funniest Shindig; Jaynestown; War Stories 3 Saddest Out of Gas; The Message; Heart of Gold 3 Guilty Pleasures Our Mrs. Reynolds; Ariel; Trash
I've never heard that one before. So cool, but I've always loved him in every role and what I've learned about him as a person. I still love his comment after playing the chicken in Moana - "I went to Juliard for this".
This has also, always been one of my favorite episodes. For me, love when Zoe meets her future husband for the first time and says..."I, just do not like him". Because, this is what happen between myself and my future wife, the first time we met each other at a house get-together. We each said, "this person is not my type". But, we have now been married for over 35-years (smile...smile).
I love that Sofie got that not only was Serenity being introduced just like the rest of the crew, but that it was love at first sight. Many great insights in this reaction. And yes. This episode is some of the best writing you'll ever see on television.
It’s why she’s one of my favorite reactors. She always seems to get what a show is trying to do & she’s great at picking up on jokes & just humor in general.
The way *I* see it, the moustache wasn't what bothered Zoe. She was bothered because she had feelings for Wash from the get-go; feelings that she'd never experienced before.
This is actually my favorite episode of Firefly and always has been. The way they introduce all of the character's backstories while also putting us through the stress of thinking that this episode could have both the beginning and the end of our crew and then bring them all back together again. Also, a little detail that most people don't catch, at the beginning when Mal is showing Serenity to Zoe and she asks "What is that?" and he says "Just step around it." They are looking at the spot where Mal is lying dying on the floor in the later time period.
but also if you look very carefully, they messed up, if you look at the floor behind them as their walking theres a cable on the floor, its the cable for the camera, and it's moving with them, so they could also be talking about that, and they kept it in
Find someone who looks at you the way Mal looks at Serenity; who talks about you the way Inara talks about Serenity; who takes care of you the way Kaylee takes care of Serenity. And keep them as safe as Serenity keeps her crew.
@andrew04291......don't forget that inara told Simon that she's "loved this ship from the first minute she saw it." Further proof her and mal belong together.
All the technical aspects of this episode are perfect -- different illumination for different points in time, for example, the topics, the situation, with a few unexpected twists that kind of escape old clichés about these 'accidents in space' situations... To me, they just show how well written Firefly was. Whedon was really inspired. It would have been so easy to write this episode just like a series of flashbacks with a lackluster main thread... but he had a great main story, and the flashbacks felt organic to it. This show has so much talent in all its episodes, in all its parts... but in this one several things were so especially well written, so clever, so heartwrenching. I love it, I really do.
Yeah, the direction is great. You have two different alternating timelines leading into each other, both interrupted by a dozen different flashbacks that are all over the place, and it's never confusing in the slightest. At one point you have three consecutive scenes that all start with Mal walking into the engine room, and somehow it all makes perfect sense!
@@toddjh Yep! I honest don't know how writers can see and prepare these scenes in their minds -- it would be soooo easy to make it all confusing and hard to follow! But they didn't. Tip of the hat to them.
This episode is a masterpiece of story telling. - Mal had the draw on the other Captain and none of the other crew even had their guns out at the time. It was a guarantee that even if Mal was an average shot, he could have killed the Captain and at least one more. Rather than take that risk, the Captain opted to leave believing they could just wait for Mal to die and come back later. They were probably waiting and watching at a distance when they saw the 2 shuttles return, so they gave up trying.
- You know things are bad when Jayne IS the voice of reason. So true! Yelling and fighting does use up oxygen faster. PS: Oxygen is a gas (Out of Gas). - "Catalyzer on the port compression coil blew" - Kaylee has been complaining to Mal about this part since the pilot episode. - It's the perfect touch at the end of the episode when we see the ship salesman was trying to sell Mal a different ship but his heart was set on Serenity. This is the episode where I like to talk about Mal metaphorically. I like to think every crew member represents an aspect of Mal. Also, in an abstract way - Serenity is the tenth member of the crew (inability to settle under Alliance rule. Desire to wander). Aspects of Mal: Zoe - Military Comradery and command structure Wash - Wit, seeing the humorous side of things Inara - Love and the inability to express it (Brought on by the war in Mal's case) Shepherd Book - Religion (repressed by War PTSD for Mal), the belief & desire to do right Kaylee - Optimism in life, (Also repressed by War PTSD for Mal), Love and devotion for Serenity Simon - Loyalty & protection (Simon to River, Mal to his crew) Jayne - Mercenary, Pessimistic view of the world (For Mal - Brought on from the war), Justifies doing crime. River - Mental anguish at the hands of the Alliance. Feeling lost. The need to get away from the Alliance. (For Mal - Brought on from the war) Serenity - The ship is the 10th member of the crew. It represents the freedom Mal is seeking.
This is by far my favourite episode of Firefly, and in my opinion it's the most perfect episode of a TV show that I've ever seen. It's so well written, so well directed, the lighting and cinematography for each timeline works so well, and the acting is spot on from each and every character. But most of all, it's the emotions that it makes you feel. I could tell you felt all the emotions, and that's really what makes this episode so perfect. We all went through it with Serenity and her crew, and it's brought us closer to them having made it through to the other side together. And that's what makes us fans Browncoats, the fact that seeing one of "our" crew fall hurts us too, and seeing Serenity adrift and empty makes us feel empty too.
Maybe you remember Kaylee had complained about some specific piece that Mal never seemed to have the patience (or the money) to buy... among several other things that weren't going well with Serenity's engine. It's a miracle that little Firefly lived through six episodes without any major accidents...
The scene at the table with their interaction dynamics and how it is embedded in the rest of the episodes plot reminds me on the christmas dinner in Buffy 5x16, where they all sit together and have a really nice time.
This has always been my favorite episode as well. I speaks to a lot of truths. I won't say more than that but... Glad to see you like it so well also. Be safe and have a wonderful holiday of what you celebrate.
SERIES SPOILERS: Your 3 favorites are the exact 3 on my list as well. For me, I have 4th favorite - I also add "Ariel" to that list. We get a lot of great character exposition in 'Ariel'. Plus - It's the end scene between Mal and Jayne that really drives that great episode into top tier for me. Both actors gave an outstanding performance playing dialog against each other.
My favorite episode from the whole series - and with so many strong episodes that's saying a lot. This is an absolute masterpiece of storytelling. The good news is that there are still a lot of great episodes to come, some of which many other fans consider their favorites, right up to the very last one.
Great reaction. This is one of my favorite episode. Gina had a small role because she was getting married to Lawrence Fishburne. I love the back stories of the crew.
In the outtake reel they show the first meeting with Wash and Zoe and Mel are also wearing mustaches. This is an excellent episode for seeing the history of the crew. Good reaction.
I have always said that my favorite episode of Firefly is whichever episode I happen to be watching at the time. Even with that, however, I recognize that this is objectively the best episode of the show.
It has some close competition, but Out of Gas is a very strong contender for best episode. It's beautifully written, gives extra depth to most of the characters, fantastic on a technical level, *and* absolutely hits you in the feels as well.
Loved your reaction, pretty lady. This episode always makes me a bit teary-eyed to see how the crew first came together and how they became a family. Thanks for sharing! 🤗
Not only my favorite episode, my favorite episode of a television show ever. Something I didn’t really catch the first time: Zoe was unconscious when they left in the shuttle. When she woke up and found out Mal stayed behind she insisted they go back.
THANK YOU for realizing Mal tailors his approach/command to who he’s dealing with. It’s both very obvious and very subtle at the same time. Not everyone gets it, or at least the first time. This is arguable the best episode of the series, or at least top 3. It’s so well done in every aspect. It means a lot to us that it means a lot to you.
This is Firefly's Fool For Love. While he didn't write or direct that episode, Tim Minear wrote and directed the Angel counterpart Darla, and he also wrote this episode.
A lot of people say it's the moustache. But that's not it. See... the moustache bothers *US,* because we're used to seeing him without one, and it looks super weird to us. Zoe has no term of comparison, so that's clearly not the issue. That undefined, indescribable feeling that somewhat bothers Zoe is... that *_she likes him!_* 😏😏😏 Even though she still hasn't realized, yet.
"Best episode so far" Best episode period, I think, though there's another that comes really close (and it was actually my initial favorite), so you have that to look forward to.
Beautiful reaction, you’re insightful and empathetic and it’s lovely to see. I love this series. I’ve watched it perhaps a dozen times and this is my favourite episode - for all the reasons you mention. Thank you.
Great reaction!! I love this episode and it was written by the Brilliant Tim Minear. He also wrote Angel- 2:2, Are You Now or Have You Ever Been- and Angel- 2:7, Darla and MANY other fantastic episodes. I thought your reaction to Darla was so good that I posted it on my FB timeline and tagged Tim. He liked the post and I would guess he probably watched the reaction as I know he watches some youtube reactions to episodes he wrote-
Yes, I've seen them all, and this is my favorite. Excellent in all aspects. Kaylee had told Malcolm in an earlier episode that the catalyzer needed to be replaced. She didn't say, "I told you so."
when this was filmed was around the date they were told that the show was about to get cancelled, not sure if the episode was made with that in mind but is it wasn't, was a hell of a coincidence, that's one of the things I love about this show, last episodes were made knowing that they wouldn't be renewed, and still you don't see any less care, at all. And you could have sensed some resentment for a "unsuccessful" show, but you can feel the love, clearly reflected in the Serenity.
Always guts me that Kaylee warned Mal in the Pilot that this would happen because of the compression coil...but he didn't listen. She Always FELT what Serenity needed.
My favourite episode. The continuity in this episode is fantastic - the part that broke is the same part that Kaylee was complaining might break in the pilot episode.
There are many really great episode in this shortened season, but this one is my favorite. And this is the first time I thought of the ship itself as one of the crew. And while confusing at first, I thought they did a master job of intertwining three timelines and not losing us (once we figure out what's going on).
Such a smart reaction! You spotted so much on a first watch (and you realised how they were using lighting really fast). This is my joint-favourite episode, in a series where my least-favourite is still great.
Firefly is definitely one of my favorites! Please react to The X Files, Stargate SG1, Warehouse 13, Fringe, Eureka, and of course the original Star Trek all the way through a series called Enterprise! Thank you and have fun! By the way Nathan Filion, Summer Glau, Alan Tudyk, Adam Baldwin, and Amanda Bacerin are some of my favorite actors!
11:12 Think about it if the roles were reversed. The Serenity crew aboard another vessel. Someone pointing a gun directly at Mal. No way of knowing if there really are no other people lurcking about the ship that could be armend and ready to attack. None of the crew would risk Mal's life for a some spare parts in a situation like this. They would drop the catalyser and leave.
"I bet he could take them, but how would they know?". A lot of people question why that other team would leave when they got Mal outnumbered. No, as good as Mal is, he probably couldn't take them all in that situation. But he could kill one or 2, maybe 3 of them before they kill him. And the thing is that none of them want to be one of the ones that die. They aren't willing to die so that the others can have a ship. It's not worth the risk.
My favorite episode! I've always been a sucker for really good, revealing character beats which is not that easy to pull off well (Inara fell in love with Serenity from her first look just like Mal, hinting how they could be so similar while being so VERY different, etc). This show is full of them across the board somehow, but this episode in particular has such an effect on me every time I watch it, along with the smart writing. They make sure to show us how Mal knows to do everything he does in the present (where to place the engine part, how to administer the adrenaline and where it is, etc.). It feels like a simple thing but a lot of shows would overlook that stuff. Also, great, insightful reaction, as always.
Zoe was injured so that Gina Torres could go on her honeymoon with now ex-husband Laurence Fishbourne. They met making The Matrix sequels. River says, "That's not going to happen" and pauses long enough for you to be wrong. LOL
There are always certain scenes where we will lean closer to see the reaction. Kaylee's scene is the biggest one here. Also, consider a reaction to deleted scenes after the series and the movie. There's a really awesome one from this episode there!
"Out of Gas": A birthday party is interrupted when a crucial engine part fails. Kaylee has been bugging Mal about this about-to-fail engine part since the first episode, and it has to be replaced. Three time lines are shown in different colors as Mal finds that it is very cold in Space. The gas in question is Oxygen, as seen when the other ship docks with "Serenity." Yes, we get origin stories for crew members, which is a hoot.;)
Sophie, if you never listen to anything I say ever again, listen to this: after you've watched the series and the movie Serenity, you really, REALLY need to watch the biggest Firefly/Serenity blooper reel you can find on TH-cam, and you need to find and watch an interview with Jewel Staite (Kaylee) in which she explains her "finger" feud with Nathan Fillion (Mal). You will not regret this. Nor will we...😉
11:12 Mal kept the gun pointed at the captain, and the captain apparently didn't want Serenity bad enough to risk a bullet.
This has always been my favorite episode.

This is the episode where I like to talk about Mal metaphorically. I like to think every crew member represents an aspect of Mal. Also, in an abstract way - Serenity is the tenth member of the crew (inability to settle under Alliance rule. Desire to wander).
Aspects of Mal:
Zoe - Military Comradery and command structure
Wash - Wit, seeing the humorous side of things
Inara - Love and the inability to express it (Brought on by the war in Mal's case)
Shepherd Book - Religion (repressed by War PTSD for Mal), the belief & desire to do right
Kaylee - Optimism in life, (Also repressed by War PTSD for Mal), Love and devotion for Serenity
Simon - Loyalty & protection (Simon to River, Mal to his crew)
Jayne - Mercenary, Pessimistic view of the world (For Mal - Brought on from the war), Justifies doing crime.
River - Mental anguish at the hands of the Alliance. Feeling lost. The need to get away from the Alliance. (For Mal - Brought on from the war)
Serenity - The ship is the 10th member of the crew. It represents the freedom Mal is seeking.

Always guts me that Kaylee warned Mal in the Pilot that this would happen because of the compression coil...but he didn't listen. She Always FELT what Serenity needed.
perfect episode, really. and it's not just him!it's just unbelievable that fox sent the show straight to the dump!
The part that broke on the ship is the same one that Kaylee has been telling Mal needed to be replaced for the entire season.
No, it isn't. Even Mal himself in this episode correctly identified the part as the Catalyzer and not a Compression Coil.
Such a smart reaction! You spotted so much on a first watch (and you realised how they were using lighting really fast). This is my joint-favourite episode, in a series where my least-favourite is still great.
This is my favorite episode so far too!
You're talking about Firefly (probably).
I'm talking about television.
Cool reaction, thanks for sharing.
Wash should have kept that moustache.
I don't know. Something about it bothers me.
IMO, this ep and ep. 10 (War Stories) are the best two of the series.
5:38 - Several emotions at once on SoFie's face.
My second favorite episode.
Yes it was definitely the mustache.
I also think this episode is great, but 2nd best for me :P Serenity, Out Of Gas, Objects In Space are my top 3.
Good point. And furthermore, he would have killed their Captain first.
One of the best hours of television ever made.
My favorite too
My favorite episode!
❤🧡💛💚💙💜
Zoe was injured so that Gina Torres could go on her honeymoon with now ex-husband Laurence Fishbourne. They met making The Matrix sequels.
River says, "That's not going to happen" and pauses long enough for you to be wrong. LOL
There are always certain scenes where we will lean closer to see the reaction. Kaylee's scene is the biggest one here.
Also, consider a reaction to deleted scenes after the series and the movie. There's a really awesome one from this episode there!
It's Caleb and Jasmine!
There's a reason the show was called Firefly... named after the ship class of Serenity. And the movie's straight up called Serenity. lol
Oxygen is a gas. They were running out of Oxygen, hence the name of the episode - "Out of gas".
Comment
Sophie, if you never listen to anything I say ever again, listen to this: after you've watched the series and the movie Serenity, you really, REALLY need to watch the biggest Firefly/Serenity blooper reel you can find on TH-cam, and you need to find and watch an interview with Jewel Staite (Kaylee) in which she explains her "finger" feud with Nathan Fillion (Mal). You will not regret this. Nor will we...😉
Look please 🎉🎉🎉🎉
