Wow, surprised by all the negativity here in the comments. I really like this, and I bet it's because I never heard the original album and therefore I have no expectations for how it SHOULD sound. I liked their dark side cover actually...lots of people hated it. Different strokes for different folks I suppose.
To me, it sounds a bit like it might sound if I was half awake in the morning and replaying the original album back to myself inside my head in a dream state.
Side A 1. “I Wanna Be Adored” - HOTT MT - Stardeath and White Dwarfs 2. “She Bangs the Drums” - The Flaming Lips, Poliça, New Fumes 3. “Waterfall” - Blobs Descending From Heaven - HOTT MT - Stardeath 4. “Don’t Stop” - Stardeath and White Dwarfs 5. “Bye Bye Badman” - New Fumes - Def Rain 6. “Elizabeth My Dear” - New Fumes - The Flaming Lips Side B 7. “(Song for My) Sugar Spun Sister” - HOTT MT 8. “Made of Stone” - Stardeath and White Dwarfs - The Flaming Lips 9. “Shoot You Down” - Peaking Lights 10. “This Is the One” - Jonathan Rado (Foxygen) - The Flaming Lips 11. “I Am the Resurrection” - New Fumes 12. “Fools Gold” - SpaceFace
Yeah man. I really dig this. A good cover should NOT sound like a copy of the original. The band should be creative enough to impart their own style on the the song, make it their own. That is where RATM Rage against the machine really made their mark. Some covers are better than the original when the group is talented enough to make it something that is not mimicry or the original, otherwise, what’s the point? Why do a cover that’s the same? May as well listen to the original. The word “artist” is thrown around way too quickly these days. A ghost written pop singer with a voice that doesn’t sound horrible is just a singer and a performer, not an “artist”. The flaming lips are artists in their own right. So is Nell, with whom I’m in love. Wayne Coin, Zac De la Rocha, Les Claypool, Airst Aid kit . They are artists. Performing monkeys are not artists. It’s fair if you prefer an original over a cover. I’ve heard some covers of songs I didn’t like that much played by a band and it made me like the song, not out of bad devotion, but because of the sonic appeal. So. Singers can sing well. Fine. But the voice is an instrument that can be technically played well, but if what it’s playing and what it is playing to sucks, it makes no difference. So: being able to sing doesn’t make a person an “artist” automatically. It depends if the brain attached to the vocal chords can relate art or just sing the same pop garbage the world now seems to not only deem as acceptable music, but automatically labels the the regurgatron an “artist”, when it is just a scantily clad automaton regurgitatating the same familiar trash. Plastic, disposable, forgettable.
In my opinion The Stone Roses' debut album is one of my all time favourites. That's my opinion. This cover of the album is how other people reimagine it according to their opinions, that's all x
Never send a Post-Punk band to do a Jangle-pop bands job! Still, this album is beautiful in parts and a bit laughable in others. But that's the Flaming Lips I suppose.
ok well this isnt really a flaming lips album its a tribute album to the stone roses featuring multiple bands here is the tracklist including the list of bands (listed by song then artist below it) I Wanna Be Adored Stardeath and White Dwarfs, HOTT MT 2 She Bangs the Drums Poliça, New Fumes 3 Waterfall Stardeath and White Dwarfs, HOTT MT, Blobs Descending From Heaven 4 Don't Stop Stardeath and White Dwarfs 5 Bye Bye Badman New Fumes, Def Rain 6 Elizabeth My Dear New Fumes 7 (Song for My) Sugar Spun Sister HOTT MT 8 Made of Stone Stardeath and White Dwarfs 9 Shoot You Down Peaking Lights 10 This Is the One Jonathan Rado 11 I Am the Resurrection New Fumes 12 Fools Gold Spaceface
+Metalheadbangerfreak I actually had the list of bands but idk why i didn't list them in the description. Now I don't have it anymore so, it's ok to copy from your post right?
I get with these cover albums that they're always in deconstructionist mode with all their friends in tow (even the cover art is a perverse & broken take on the pollock-esque roses' artwork), but I would've really loved to hear a real flaming lips pop take on songs like don't stop. Could've been amazing. Waterfall is a decent listen.
Amazing re: don't stop. Both times I have listened to this album now (approx a year apart, long enough to forget most of it) I've thought Don't Stop the absolute standout song on this album. Both incredibly well done and prompted me to go and listen to the original again
This had the potential to be good, some of the songs are really going somewhere then the bands decide to start singing out of key. damn, missed opportunity
Resurrection sounds like Cabaret Voltaire, although I respect the intentions the execution in places is patchy. like someone said you cant improve perfection.
Really dislike the male singer, it sounds like he's singing sarcastically, like it's a big joke. Resurrection in particular comes off as a mockery of the original.
Some people have given up on them around Yoshimi, some others lost interest when the first guitar player left the band. I've stopped relating to the LIps the first time I heard The Terror. It's cool if this album gets them new listeners, young people who think the weird noises are cool and druggy. I wouldn't even remember that band's name if this was all I heard from them.
The best part about of this song was the groove. I doubt that any original* (Wayne, Steven or Mike...original for the last 30 years), had much to do with this. This cover lacks the feel.
oh I get it now , why then . wayne ,, why .. it sort of works though ., misty , flamey lippy sort of thing ., if people want too send me money for my comments , I understand that , please try and control yourself ........the next flaming lips album is free , they have so much money now ., hang on I just paid for american head ........gimme my money back wayne .
These covers are too hip to have heart...the idear of the tribute is honorable, these bands' executions, though, simply do not live up to the originals...in all their over-produced layers, they lose the simplicity of simplicity, something the stone roses shouted without verbalising
Personally I think its brilliant. Its not a rip off. Its a tribute done in the Lips way.
And it’s STILL making people go brrrrrrrrrrr 🫨🫠 all these years later

She Bangs the Drums sounds like Yes circa Close to the Edge, to me. All nice stuff, loved the Roses, love the Lips!
Absolutely fantastic album. Wow.
love the stones roses and this is really enjoyable
Thanks for putting this up
Shoot you Down is fucking glorious!

This is sublimely beautiful.

genius Wayne!
It's like if Elf's and Gremlins got together and started playing the Stone Roses... Strange
+Me Ear you should give it a listen. They take that stoner l.p. and give it a 21st century kick in the ass.
What do people expect? You can't improve perfection.
Stone Roses Class Band heres hoping for the 3rd coming

Does Ian Curtis make an appearance on 'This is the One'? Sounds like it anyway....
Tyler Phillips bit harsh...he's just hanging out
Most of the people in the comments slagging off this cover album would scoop up a copy immediately if one became affordable.
Sounds like a game boy soundtrack sometimes. I much prefer the original. No question about that
I missed this album , why did not someone tell me , you all must know who I am right .
has anyone got this on digital ?
This had the potential to be good, some of the songs are really going somewhere then the bands decide to start singing out of key.
damn, missed opportunity
Stone Roses fan talking about people singing out of key...
just love wannabe music journalism
Bizarre.
2nd half of the album is so much better than the 1st.
Resurrection sounds like Cabaret Voltaire, although I respect the intentions the execution in places is patchy. like someone said you cant improve perfection.
mucha psicodelia
And I thought the original version was trippy.
43:32 wtf is going on?? :(

There's been some brilliant, wild, weird cover albums over the years. This isn't one of them.
This album is pretty jokey, right? Some bits are hilarious. Not to be taken seriously imo
Some people have given up on them around Yoshimi, some others lost interest when the first guitar player left the band. I've stopped relating to the LIps the first time I heard The Terror. +mantra3000 I literally have no idea what you're talking about.
+Nathaniel Hornblower i know ???
i'm a HUGE Stone Roses fan and I love this album so far. I'm on the 3rd track and this is wicked.
The stone roses on acid anybody ?
They were the first time
Yes, please!
The best part about of this song was the groove. I doubt that any original* (Wayne, Steven or Mike...original for the last 30 years), had much to do with this. This cover lacks the feel.

I lasted 1:58 before hitting stop button. Thats probably the world record.
Parody surely😂?-they must hate the roses ffs!this is never a tribute😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
These covers are too hip to have heart...the idear of the tribute is honorable, these bands' executions, though, simply do not live up to the originals...in all their over-produced layers, they lose the simplicity of simplicity, something the stone roses shouted without verbalising
Isn't it a piss-take? 37:30 This Is The One is definitely a joke
God forbid a cover doesn't sound exactly like the original
thank you for posting this!
