Responding to a question on how the Hiby r5 gen 2 compares to my other DAPS (9/2/24)

  • All of my DAPs sound pretty much the same.
    I have the Hiby R5 gen 2, R6 Pro 2, R3 gen 2, M300 and the Sony A55, A306. Also the Samsung Note 9. None sounds better than the other so there is no sound comparison to be made. The differences are there with stuff like power to drive things, the screens, the software/UI/speed, the battery life, etc.

    My Cowon Plenue 1 [2015] finally broke down, had to get something new. Really liking the Hiby R5, discount at $250 now in 2024.

    Thank you for your honest thoughts and awesome video! I was in the market for a DAP but I might just go with a phone instead and it can be a media station as well. I currently have a Hiby R3 Sabre 2023 edition and I use it with two DAC dongles for the 4.4 output, that I absolutely love! I thought the DAPs with the DAC chips make them worth the money but I am not so sure right now. DAPs cost the same as decent mid ranged phones right now or even older flagship phones, a phone might be more value for money and better battery especially if I am using DAC dongles with it. Thank you Luke!

      Your case usage is different to mine. When I talk about using a phone as a DAP I mean only as a DAP, not as your daily phone. Separate. I don't use dongles, etc but I know they drain battery faster. I'm also talking about a Phone with a headphone jack and expandable storage. I don't play my Music through my main phone, I play it through separate devices. Everyone has a different setup and requirements so do whatever works for you. My Music phone is a spare phone which is always at home. For portable I use the Sony.

    Hey I'm currently looking for a dap . I've narrowed it down to these 3 : sony nw306, hiby m300 & hiby r5gen2.
    My usecase is to use PoweAmp or any other similar android music player and play music stored on my SD card.
    I don't care about streaming or any other app like browser or what not as I can use my phone for that. So this DAP will only be used in offline mode after the inital setup.
    What would be the best ?
    I can see the case for r5gen2 or sony have a great battery life but don't know how good they r performance wise.
    Hiby m300 is good on performance but battery life is quite below the other two.

      @PerputuallyCensored  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If you want the best battery life along with the best performance (software, UI, etc) and best portability go with the Sony. If you're on a budget get the M300. I don't use Poweramp so I can't comment on how it performs on something like the Hiby r5 gen ii but UAPP works very well, despite the poor chipset and old software.

      @@PerputuallyCensored I got the sony nw306.Seems like a great little device.
      One question I had , how much music playback do u get on it ?
      Can u share your setup ( apps/services disabled ). I'm on airplane mode with local flac files. I don't think it can last more than 20 hours or so.

    • @PerputuallyCensored
      @PerputuallyCensored  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      My test was 31 hours of playback. I only used 80% (From 93% down to 14%) of the battery. Mostly with the screen off, bluetooth off, wifi off and degoogled (pretty much all google apps force stopped, cache and storage emptied), never signed into any google account on the device. I also had the battery saver on and battery optimiser engaged, alongside the battery care. Your mileage will vary. I was playing mostly CD rips at 65 volume using the Sony app. I barely had the screen on during testing. I only checked periodically to see how much the battery had drained. If you are using the screen that'll get you less than my testing managed.@@sauravmehra4503

      @@PerputuallyCensored After disabling all the google bloatware only keeping poweramp, nova launcher , brave browser, a 3rd party keyboard battery life seems great. I'm loosing only 2-3% battey an hour . I'm happy with it. Standby also seems good.
      Overnight i think it looses around 2-3 %.
      Now I seem to notice one thing which might be a bug that really annoys me. Can u confirm if u notice the same.
      As i said the battery lost per hour is around 2-3 % but if i just play a song or just go through my lib for a min or so then turn the screen off and check after a while, it looses 1-2%. I think it's odd.

    My Hiby R5 II just arrived recently and i updated it to the latest firmware about a week and a half ago and was tweaking around the settings focusing on the battery consumption for longer use. It is only until last night that i had finished settings up my sd card and opened the Hiby app to start listening to my music. I found a few songs that just for some reason dont wanna play and i get a "not supported" pop up. Then this very morning i turn on the "battery saver" option in settings. Go back and open the Hiby app, start a few songs to check which ones get that pop up and all of a sudden everything stops working, from the app to then the whole UI and then It stays frozen on the boot up screen. Ive managed to turn it off but now its not powering on at ALL. Have you had any issues like this with the R5 II? Also just another small question, do you have the USB audio app set up differently on the R5 than on the R6? They have this different layout so im wondering if its some settings you changed. Album cover looks bigger on R6

    • @PerputuallyCensored
      @PerputuallyCensored  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You don't need to drag anything. Copy your Music onto an SD Card. Put it in the Hiby then load up/open UAPP and select scan on the home screen using the 3 dots top right menu. There are 2 scan options of Automatic and Manual@@davida7229

      It runs Android OS, so probably it has a recovery mode similar to Android phones, try holding volume up + power or volume down + power for a few seconds until it boots to recovery mode, inside recovery mode, you can try factory resetting it and hopefully boots up after the reboot.

      Can't go wrong with the M300 and I think it has better battery. The R4 does bit perfect though. The M300 has system wide upsampling.

    I have the HiBy R5 and it runs nothing well. I don't have wifi in my apartment, just a wired connection. Do I need one to install the USB Audio Player Pro on it, or will a wired connection do the trick? Literally the only reason I bought one was to have my entire library in my pocket, and the HiBy app runs like crud with that many songs and podcasts running on it. If you could help, please and thanks, man. :)
