I wouldn't say Sephiroths story in any way demonized mental illness. He would be a better metaphor to one of those old Vietnam vets that the government used to experiment on like Jacob's ladder. Its a revelation of horrible experiments not a revelation of a mental illness that causes Sephiroth to go mad.

@@EugenethePhilostopher actually it's likely Hojo had him sent to Nibelheim on purpose so he'd find out about the truth and was aware he'd react harshly. It's also confirmed Sephiroth's will is actually more powerful than Jenova's, so she couldn't have driven him mad. If he was driven mad in any way, it was discovering the truth of his existence. Which to be fair, who wouldn't lash out from that? You find out you were an experiment and were crafted to be merely a super soldier and that you're basically an alien in comparison to those around you. It's even more tragic when you realize all he ever wanted was to live a normal life, and finding this out completely shattered that possibility for him-.

Zidane telling Garnet that he will follow wherever she goes isn’t because he thinks she’s a leader. Mmn. I think it is implied Vincent -thought- he was Seph's father, but if you take him with you to fight Hojo in Midgar, I recall that Hojo states he is Sephiroth's father, at which Vincent states something like, "then I was wrong. The one who -should- have slept is you!" as he points at the scientist. ....of course, I trust Hojo about as far as I can throw him so.... who knows.
Sadly, Dirge of Cerberus only muddied the waters further for me. I ultimately took Vince and Lucretia's relationship to be more of a Paramour situation until clarified otherwise. Ah well. Muddy canon fields make for fertile fanfic fodder.

I can understand this information being left out because in relation to the Aerith is a SW theory, that is immaterial at best (a SW can absolutely still utilize this line, it doesn't matter where they picked it up from) and misleading at worst depending on the canon/timeline that is refered to. CC was decanonized for the Remake's timeline, AND one of the most vocal criticisms of CC is how it retcons original characters (Aerith being considered amongst them) and story elements from the '97 version.
I can completely understand this guy being completely aware of this information and just choosing to leave it out for these reasons.

I have always subscribed to the theory that Jenova is the one controlling Sephiroth. I think it plays to the overall themes of the story better and makes Sephiroth a more interesting character. Jenova itself doesn't need to be sentient; it's a parasite on the planet, and is a reflection of Shinra. It asks the question, "Where does evil come from? Is evil within us or does it come from the sky?" Sephiroth, born by both Shinra and Jenova, is caught in the middle. He (and Cloud) must decide who they are: Human or Alien? Sentient or puppet? Driven by the question "Who am I?" I think these are valuable themes for young audiences to reflect on in their own lives.
These are the themes I want the remake to explore further. I'm very happy they have set the remakes up to tell their own story, but I desperately hope they don't get caught up in these multiple universes shenanigans. I don't find "exploring the multiverse of Final Fantasy" to be all that interesting and I feel it is a distraction from better stories to be told.

If I recall correctly that *was* the way it was originally written, Jenny was the one in control, use Sephy as an illusion to manipulate Cloud into doing her bidding. But Square changed it as the evil alien manipulating everyone was recently done by them in Chrono Trigger, so they re-worked the plot to make it Cloud VS Sephy, added in Tifa to flesh out some extras, complied the code, were amazed it was able to run and printed it to disc asap.

The thing with the FF multiverse idea and centering around 14 is that it's pretty much the Omega raid series that confirms it. Omega shows you the FF5 universe and the FF6 universe - both places it visited while in the interdimentional rift. As for other games, FF3 and FF12 can be said to have occurred in the past. FF3 would have taken place in the 4th Umbral Era (shortly in the aftermath of the 3rd Umbral calamity - the earthquake that sunk the Allagan Empire) while Ivalice (the world of FF12 and Tactics) existed in the Far East before being conquered by the Garlean empire. Fran herself (who is still alive due to the extraordinarily long life spans of the Viera) guides us through the ruins in the Return to Ivalice raids. And yes, it's the exact same Fran. But that's all that can be confirmed. Any other appearances from other FF games are either the creators just using tropes from other games or a special cross-over event.

Vincent had a close relationship with Lucretia. Not only was he her bodyguard, he was also in love with her and she probably with him too.

In addition, Vincent suddenly decides to go with Cloud and stop Sephiroth. It would be fitting that he thought and saw a personal responsibility in fighting and stopping Sephiroth as he is his secret son.

I think ultimecia is more of a self fulfilling prophecy. She wasn't evil/insane at the start, but the effect of jumping through time left it's mark of insanity upon each of the other sorceresses of which she was successor to.
Each sorceress she jumped into to alter events resulted in ever increasing insanity, and the final fight against her seems more like someone who wavers from wanting to kill you and someone who wants you to.end their life for them.
Also, ozma is a nod to Ultima. Some of older games had mistranslated or made spelling errors making Ultima as Atma.
Ultima is always the final option boss that is the most difficult to fight.

Ultimecia is most probably Ellone, and not Rinoa. Ellone has the ability to project her consciousness, and that of others that she has met in her life, into the past.
Laguna starred in a movie as a Knight and lover of a Sorceress, Ultimecia desires such a Knight, weilding a Gunblade in particular. Ellone is at an age when she would have seen it.
Another thing is that Ultimecia's main gripe is that she is lonely, the last person at the end of time. Ellone was always alone, depressed about having being forgotten about by her loved ones.
Finally, she has a direct line (conscious wise) to both Sorceress' Edea and Adel, the former having cared for her and latter kidnapping her.

I would still agree with the “Jenova taking over Sephiroth” theory. While Sephiroth did physically overcome Jenova, he still almost immediately turned a full 180 and took on Jenova’s directive: destroying/eating the planet, which makes very little sense for him to decide on his own so abruptly considering how presumably strong he was mentally and emotionally. The true parasite might not be physical in nature, but instead a programmed directive or intensely powerful viral suggestion that switches to a new qualified host. Even if not that, the parasite is clearly able to mutate cellular behaviors and structures to varying results.
When looking at it, even within its own universe, how sure are we that the Jenova we see was the original? The true parasite could have changed from one being to another countless times before getting contained by the Cetra. Considering that Advent Children is canon to the series, even though Jenova’s main body is gone, its cells and remaining parts still play a very important part in Sephiroth’s very existence, showing that Sephiroth does not have any active control of his own. In Crisis Core, unlike Angeal and Genesis whose bodies ultimately rejected the Jenova cells, Sephiroth’s did the opposite which possibly could have led to him being less resistant to Jenova’s mental tampering while still able to remain himself to a degree. “Jenova” is still there, Sephiroth is not his own being, and the original world eater has still not been stopped.
While the creators state Sephiroth was more powerful than Jenova at the time, physical power alone does not win the real battle. There’s something inside Sephiroth that won’t give up its destructive goal. What if there are still details they left out for the sake of fan creativity and ambiguity? Revealing Sephiroth as a victim of the creature’s influence in the worst of ways would still be an amazing shock this late in the game’s story. It wouldn’t even have to be a retcon either.

    • @Yurikon3
      @Yurikon3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Yeah, Jenova doesn't even seem to have physical body in normal sense so how Sephiroth even can defeat it physically? And even if he cuts Jenova to million pieces, Jenova still lingers around. I think some sort of synthesis theory is plausible since while Sephiroth's will is in control, did Jenova even have a will to be overtaken? Sephiroth's direction went from "taking back the planet" to "eat up its resources and move on to next planet". The first goal had still some human elements in it when next one is already more like glorified parasite with wide vocabulary trying to do its biological programming.
Sephiroth being more powerful than Jenova doesn't really mean Jenova has lost or did even need to fight Sephiroth since Sephiroth was doing Jenova's bidding anyway.

Also, I could be wrong but I believe the evil sorceresses of the 'past' are the sorceresses we know and fight in game.
Adel and Edea brutally led large nations on bloody crusades over several decades; Adel rounded up young girls to find a successor sorceress, was so powerful they could only trap her in orbit, leading to the discontinuation of wireless communications, including TV and radio..
Edea ran an orphanage before opening up a successful series of military academies to train CHILDREN to fight and die in wars; (did anyone but her and Cid know they built the Garden(s) to fight sorceresses?)
And Rinoa was the leader of an anti-government terrorist group before attempting to assassinate the leader of her own country and becoming a sorceress who had something to do with the Lunar Cry, maybe the worst one ever.
Me, you, and everyone who played the game know that these events were largely controlled, or at least influenced by Ultimecia herself (self-fulfilling prophecy?), but does the general public know that? Did anyone else know Edea and Cid build Gardens to fight sorceress? Yes, master NORG and possibly his goons aka Garden Faculty.
Rinoa was a leader of Timber Owls as her means to fight her own father and she did not attempt to assassinate president Deling, she only wished him to be captured to make him sign the Timber's independence declaration. Actually, it was Ultimecia in Edea's body who killed Deling. And no, she didn't have anything with Lunar Cry. It is a natural phenomenon on FF8 world, albeit misused by the holders of Lunatic Pandora. Rinoa was comatose for quite a long time after she became sorceress, possibly trying to suppress Ultimecia's influence, contrary to Edea who had let Ultimecia to fully control her in order to somehow make sure Ellone escapes Ultimecia's clutches...but in the end Rinoa failed to prevent Ultimecia's possession and it is clear Ultimecia still had quite a big problem to control Rinoa's body who apparently still tried her best to resist during the Lunar base events, despite beeing a noob in using magical powers... the end effect was she moved and acted like a ghost or zombie. OR....isn't this Rinoa's strange behaviour while beeing possessed a side effect of the fact that by possessing Rinoa through the Ellone junction machine, Ultimecia possessed herself in a distant past??

@@Fraxinus1986 I think you're arguing about something I'm not saying. Your argument seems to be that Rinoa is innocent and also that the world accepts that. They don't, though, and we can learn this over the course of the game - information is simply not that wide-spread about Rinoa being innocent.
Dollet actively hates Galbadia and, by extension, the sorceress - having been conquered by Galbadia under the direction of the sorceress.
Galbadia only worshiped the sorceress for a time - after Seifer's disastrous leadership the entire G-Army there went AWOL. While many were caught up in the fervor and spectacle, originally, we can tell in dialogue that people are scared and confused. And then the president was assassinated by the sorceress, live, who controlled people in a very scary manner.
Now, does this specifically and explicitly blow back on Rinoa? Eh, not really, at least not explicitly in-game... but that says nothing about years later or the next generation or whatever by Ultimecia's time; and regardless, it's clear that the "sorceress" was explicitly identified as the cause of many, if not most, of the problems in the world, from Esthar to Galbadia to Dollet. Everyone has cause to hate a "Sorceress" who consistently brings strife and trouble - and the people in the game *are* aware of that, at least, and are thus suspicious. That's all in-text.
I don't ascribe to the "life sucks for Squall and Rinoa and the rest afterwords" part of the theory, but absolutely the long series of calamities associated with sorceresses during the course of the game lead to a powerful negative impression of sorceresses which Ultimecia rebels against... by going back in time to torment those who would persecute sorceresses, causing general distrust for sorceresses leading to hatred leading to persecution...
The game is clear it's a cycle and Ultimecia is the cause of her own problems, later.

Besides actual sex workers, there are also hosts/hostesses for whom any form of sexual contact is totally disallowed, and this is known and understood by the customer from the start. This has been the case since the Edo period. Aerith could have made enough from the latter to support herself until she joined the party. To go with Sephiroth in the remake seemingly knowing the events that have not happened yet from the original game, I believe that Aerith is already dead in the remake. 2 main things lead me to believe this, 1 is that those ghost things that attack out of nowhere I think mostly seem to appear when something substantially different from the original is happening, like they are attempting to keep the timeline intact or something, and then there is the scene you get after the plate fell if you made choices for her over Tifa though the game. In the scene with her, she has a look like dead characters in FFX where pyreflies are flying around them and Cloud assumes that is her communicating with the lifestream but she does not answer to that, but she does touch his cheek to which Cloud tries to grab her hand but his had passes right through hers as if she is some kind of ghost. That might not be noticeable in game, but if you look up a video of it so you can go frame by frame, his had passes right through her. Though even with this theory I am still not sure what to make of what she says to Cloud, to not fall in love with her because it is all fake. Maybe simply talking about herself being fake as her body is not real as she is already dead, or this could be some kind of aluding to the world being like a fake Matrix like reality, which does seem possible in the remake due to the vr thing stuff they have you doing in game.

Experimented on their child and basically was complicit with helping bring about the biggest threat to the world. She fucked over the world, Vincent, her child, and ultimately herself. For example, Kefka was ultimately just a regular guy who, similar to the person playing the game, is simply thrust into a suddenly emerging world of magic. Again, like the player, he works to take advantage of the aspects of that new world to gain all of its potential benefits.
He has a few vague similarities with some of the previous villains, but definitive differences as well. He wasn't the front man for some greater and more otherworldly threat, he wasn't an ancient evil or force of nature, he wasn't an arcane sorcerer or warrior full of ambition, corruption, or hatred. He was just a guy. That's why his given backstory in the game is so simple.
He's kind of like a villainous counterpart to Bartz, just a guy with humble origins who gradually ended up gaining immense power and reshaping the world through simply pursuing the course of his own life. In fact, I think it's a pretty interesting thought experiment (maybe not exactly a theory) to compare and contrast Bartz and Kefka. If anything, they've both certainly got a sense of humor.

I could see Hojo screwing around with Lucrecia's fetus out of spite, especially considering that he had already turned Vincent into whatever he is now. Consider that Hojo already had two potentially better specimens for the Jenova project, Genesis and Angeal, not to mention Weiss (and later, the Tsviets). There was little need for Sephiroth as a sample, except possibly as a control specimen.

Marche IMO is the way he is because Squaresoft was trying to draw parallels between FFTA and the Matrix franchise which was really popular at the time (heck, FFTA was released only a few months before the Matrix Reloaded was slated to release in theaters), implying that Marche is trying to combat the escapism provided in Ivalice because, like Neo in the Matrix, he's always felt there was something truly sinister beneath the perks provided by the Grimoire and that they were kept docile and complacent as part of some unknown exploitation (i.e. Li-Grim is secretly draining the energies from their fighting to grow stronger and devour even more people until the entire world has become Ivalice). The problem is that the game doesn't elaborate on any ill effects or give any urgency to Marche needing to escape the dream world to make his motivations less douche-y, i.e. if Marche's friends were being drained too much that Ivalice begins to destabilize, causing Judges to lose their powers and more and more locations in Ivalice to become Jagds where people get permanently dismembered and killed.

And considering Cid was brainwashed into his judgemaster role, we effectively have Mewt and the other brats kidnapping and brainwashing people IRL for their dumb FF role play. And this is just from Advance. Further hints from A2 suggest people from real Ivalice were also taken and brainwashed to put into Mewt's Ivalice.

Spoilers for FF8 read further at your discreation:
I mean... FF8's story is already convoluted to begin with, even if you ignore the "they all died at the end" or "rinoa is ultimecia" theory's.
The fact that ultimecia can meddle with the past is incumbent on the invention based on squall's half sister's power, WHICH was only made in the first place because ultimecia meddled in the past to have it invented starting the premise of the first paradox that the entire story is based upon.
The second issue is that all of the first paradox is also incumbent on an entirely different paradox, namely ultimecia is only successful in fusing past/present/future because she loses due to fusing aforementioned. Namely starting at the begining (end?) when ultimacia is defeated, time unfused and in her death throes she finds herself at the orphanage in the past where all but rinoa and quistus grew up, in her last moments she possesses the matron.
In doing so, causes the creation of SEED the very organization that trained the main cast of characters how to defeat the sorceress and in putting them down the path leads to them enabling/causing the time fusion just to meet and ultimately defeat the sorceress.
Meaning not only is ultimacia only able to meddle with the past because she was able to meddle with the past, but she was only defeated because she was defeated because she could meddle with the past only because she could meddle with the past leading her to be defeated because she was defeated because...

FFXIV: The world map of The First, the setting of _Shadowbringers,_ is a truncated version of the world map for FF1. The disaster that set all events into motion _erased almost all of the map_ and in the patch content for that expansion one of the plot threads is restoring what was lost (the Eden raid series). Revelations in that expansion about The First and other parallel worlds to the main world show that many of the past entries in the series could be other parallel worlds (seven of which are destroyed).
In the previous expansion _(Stormblood)_ the Omega raid series canonize the multiverse; you fight several past bosses before culminating in a two-stage fight against Omega. Furthermore, the "Return to Ivalice" series roots FF12, _Tactics,_ and _Vagrant Story_ as past eras of The Source (the game's main world).
In the current one _(Endwalker)_ we see that The Void is not just one of the destroyed parallels, but one where FF4's story met the bad ending. As this plot thread is still ongoing, how much of FF4's story is present remains to be confirmed, but it will end soon now that all four of the Archfiends are dead and only Golbez remains- on the Void Moon, awaiting us.

I am still of the Opinion that Renoia is Ultamecia because there is actualy a tone of evidence. Such as her Castle being were Renoia said she would wait for Squall.
Or when you give Renoia the ring you can rename it. I changed it to Lionheart and in the end guess who I ended up fighting.
Not Greiver but Lionheart. So that ring is in itself linked to Griever and as a guardian force, it would have begun to consume Renoia's memories. Not being a member of SeeD she wouldn't have been privy to that knowledge.
Assuming that sorceress do live a vary long time she would have a vague idea of the past and a longing to go back to it but can't quite remembering why. She and Squall could have been very happy, but when happiness ends all that's left is grief and pain. We meet Ultamecia theru technology that lets her go back in time. Might have been why as a sorceress she humored using it in the first place. Where she fixated on Sypher right away as he and Squall are alike. Also, Renoia dated Sypher for some time so she may have remembered him.
I think Ultamecia's true end goal was to deal with her own grief to a loss she can't quite recall. Think about that when you read back her last words.
"Reflect on your childhood. Your sensation, your words, your emotions... Time will not wait. No matter how hard you hold on, it escapes you. And..."
As time compressed within her she was able to remember the past again.
In the vary end she finds herself were Squall was as a kid in the orphanage next to the field were she waited all that time. Giving her powers over to Edea.
That is another detail that's often missed. Ultamecia could have recovered but chose to pass her powers over to someone else.
Allowing her to die and be Renoia again.

It could also be argued that his mental breakdown was when she took control because that was when he was mentally at his weakest. Then it could be argued that her control may have been broken at some point later but the 2nd change in his personality (which is very subtle in my honest opinion) is only showing the damage to his original personality that was shattered then manipulated by her. Meaning she may not hold control anymore but still holds some influence over him.

To be honest back when I initially played Final Fantasy 7 back when it was initially released in 1997 I got the impression that Jenova was the villain using Sephiroth as a persona. It is not true though.

Even though sephiroth is crystallized in the crater, he has will over jenova, using her cells to shape shift into himself thru jenova. So You’re still wrong.

MCs wouldn't go to limbo as they got redemption by combating Sephiroth. Biggs, Wedge, and Jessie died battling ShinRa at the pillar but possibly their motives in the moment were more about their own survival resulting in an inescapable torment that they hadn't fought harder to protect those around them.
No matter the case, this would no longer be the situation as of Remake, since their motivations are far more consistent.

Hummm... In Japan the word for Aerith would not be Escort but Hostress.
And about Vincent there is theory is that Sephiroth "son of Lucrecia" is actually Vincent son and not Hojo. Lucrecia being the reason he was still alive and his whole reason to going out of his Coffin in FFVII. I can see why this this having to do with him being capable of equipping his son weapon. Alas I am surprise that there is not theory about Lucrecia as she is ultra important in FFVII and FFVII: Dirge of Cerberus.

I like the idea about Ultimecia actually being a future Rinoa who fell when Squall died in the future. Her G.F. is named after whatever you name Squalls Ring in the story which plays into this idea. MAybe she tried to compress time to save Squall from dying or the world itself. *shrugs*

@@mrbabluep witch tells you exactly what I meant by saying that "creators being corporations DOES muddle the water". It might had not been the original intent. But might be the hook that the creatives pitch it to the suits. It might come a time, where it actually becomes Canon, but the question will always remain. What matters most, the original vision? Or the official position? I think both sides are valid. But as it stands, is no man's land.

Regarding Vincent and the Masamune, one needs only look to the famous Moogle Team bug in FF6, where Locke is aided in rescuing Terra by Mog as well as some one-off moogle characters that split into teams to cut off the advance of the enemy soldiers and evening the odds, as this occurs near the beginning of the game where you don't have an ensemble of permanent party members to rely on in a similar scenario that occurs later. It turns out that the generic moogles that assist Locke share the same data slots as the true party members you gain later, with their data overwritten by these new characters. By using glitches to break the game's intended sequence, or a cheating device, it is possible to skip the introduction of certain characters and the triggering of the code that replaces these temporary placeholder moogles, meaning that they will remain as the moogles from the Narche sequence for the remainder of the game. Memory is rusty but I think this was first discovered, or popularized, when it was discovered that the South Figaro infiltration in Locke's scenario could be skipped, also skipping Celes's introduction and having her remain as one of the moogles for the rest of the game when the parties converge. There is also some weirdness that allows you to smuggle a ghost from the phantom train that requires a lot more work to pull off and avoid the recruitment sequence that would overwrite them, but if done you can assign the possess ability to GOGO that is an instakill ability that works on even final Kefka at the expense of removing GOGO from the party completely, but he can be retrieved from the great beyond by returning to the airship and assigning him back to your party, adding an interesting risk/reward mechanic in the late game's long, difficult dungeons with plentiful bosses and random encounters that can feasibly end in a TPK if you're unprepared, making backtracking while one member short not exactly a walk in the park. It feels less cheap than abusing vanish doom at least.
I believe that a similar trick was used in the Nibelheim flashback where Sephiroth is a temporary party member, only for his placeholder data to be overwritten by Vincent. Aside from FF6 handling temporary party members in a similar fashion, I got a Code Breaker (a device like a game shark, game Genie, or action replay) for Playstation and tried codes I found on the early internet. The first I tried was to add the Masamune to my inventory, but the weapon icon was that of Vincent's gun weapons and it couldn't be equipped by anyone. There were also playable Sephiroth codes that were usually model swaps with not a lot going on under the hood. But then there was "The Ultimate Sephiroth Code" which was pages of code strings long, dwarfing the size of any other code Breaker code I had ever seen, which replaced Vincent with a fully playable Sephiroth, who could be controlled by the player (something basic Sephiroth codes didn't allow), and was fully functional right down to having a limit break that was likely custom coded in, blurring the lines between cheat device code and full-on game mod, all on a stock Playstation with a regular copy of FF7 and a Code Breaker disc. As for why Vincent? I believe that he was chosen to be replaced specifically because the Nibelheim Sephiroth likely used Vincent's slot as evidenced by the Masamune being stored as a Vincent weapon in the code, and thus it was the path of least resistance to use that as a base to morph Sephiroth into a fully functional playable character, and since Vincent was meant to replace him in memory he had to be sacrificed.
And I cannot overstate how large that code was. You were basically manually entering a complex romhack in hex by hand with a Playstation controller. It was something that you had to devote an afternoon to and pray that you didn't mess up, and all during a time when there was more fake secrets and general misinformation about FF7 online than truth, but those that stuck it out were rewarded with possibly the coolest FF7 experience at the time. Not long ago I managed to dig up an archive of that code and showed it to a streamer when he was showcasing the size of the highest complexity passcode for transferring all of your data from Golden Sun to its sequel, which was so infamously long that players could opt for a shorter code that only transferred the most important bits, and he was blown away with how huge the Ultimate Sephiroth Code was.
