I for one think you have a perfect blend/balance of talking-no-talking-talking. I like your videos just as they are... I very-much like the fact that you don't ruin your videos (like some TH-camrs do) adding in unnecessary, loud, obnoxious music. Those are the channels I stop watching. I like to hear what is occurring naturally. Don't need, nor want a Hollywood production. Just my opinion.

I was a bee keeper and had to deal with bears when my hives were located in bear country. The one thing that worked well in keeping bears from tearing up my hives was an electric fence, powered by a 12v battery. In your case, the battery could maintain its charge via a solar panel. Just a thought. Great show!

Shawn, I've seen AIR HORNS work to scare off bears when shouting did NOT work. It would save you on ammunition too. Try it out to see if it works on the bears in your area that haven't had human interaction. And I'd try Bear Spray too & keep them close by your gun at all times. Beautiful proprty!! And you can talk as much as you want, this is your TH-cam channel! You're doing a great job, love the channel!! 👍🏻👍🏻

Yes never apologize for the content you record or say. It’s your “movie” if you will of what you are doing in your life. If you want to share your thoughts or ask for advice show us your plan take us on adventure or to the store, then do it. If you’re honest with yourself and film what you would like and comfortable doing so the rest will fall in line.
I enjoy watching the build as well as struggles and adventures you have. If I could I would be doing the same thing. Or helping a friend out working on their place.

That dug out “bunker” looks to me like an older style cabin design where they partially bury it for insulation. I’m sure in its prime it would have been an easy cabin to keep warm. Other than a possibility of claustrophobia and lack of natural light from a single small window. If done right you wouldn’t realize it was buried.

A while back (especially when you couldn't get to the cabin) you seemed really disheartened. We're all so happy you to have decided to really commit to it:
-seeing that it's all content whether its going well or not
-deciding to build a nice long term cabin and make that space your own

Screw us... talk when you feel like it, go mute when it suits you-we'll adapt. I'd be interested to know what sort of quantity of balsam fir is around. Usually straight as it comes, easy to debark, and much lighter than spruce. Don't count them out if you build in whole log... they are plenty strong enough. As long as they don't go into the ground, and you have ample overhangs on hips and gables. Be nice when you get your 4x4 on site-I'll share an easy way of pulling the logs out of the woods, with a chain looped over the tow-bar, and two wheels at the other end, metal strapping to secure (you have the photos).

Bear bangers are cheap next time you're at CT. Just know that they are REALLY loud, and you don't have time to cover your ears before they go off, so be prepared for that. I've only had to deal with one aggressive bear, and it ran, but not that far. *always* have 2-3 charges on you, so you can reload and reinforce the message. The second one usually convinces the bear that you're not worth it.

    • @maficstudios
      @maficstudios 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

He probably buried the structure because it keeps it cooler in summer, warmer in winter, not affected by wind. Local insulation, and you have much less structure that a bear can take umbrage with. He did something right, for a wood structure underground to still be there after so long...

Thanks for the video ! I wonder if the previous resident of the "bunker" might have buried the cabin so the earth would be a heat sink. It might help to keep it warm through the winter and maybe even absorb the mid-day temperatures during warm summer periods. I know people in northern Minnesota who over the winter will pile snow several feet up the walls of their cabin as insulation. He said that it especially helps reduce the drafts and the chill under his floor.
BTW, I appreciate when you explain what you're thinking. Keep talking.

While i was living there it took alot of trial and error to figure out how to grow a producing garden when there is only 10 frost free days a year and they are NOT conservative. A bowl of water left outside overnight will have ice in the morning.

He could do cold hardy crops. Onions, kale, lettuce, spinach, broccoli etc. Just will have to keep the creatures away with a fence. Excited for the garden video.

You can build an underground greenhouse....similar to the hut you found built underground except you need a glass roof....probably could find the plans on Google...

I like that bunker. It reminds me of a hobit house. I would imagine it would keep warm in the winter due to it being dug in the ground. I love your channel it's like going camping without having to leave my house.

I was going to get upset if that moose calf drowned in the river. Glad it got out ok. That bear is too bold.

Perhaps making your lean-to secure with cattle panels or hurricane mesh might help keep the bears out and provide safe storage so you can free up space inside your cabin. It might make it more comfortable for you while you build the second cabin.

You kick the bears door down now your building a house in his living room the bear isn’t the problem in this situation and you handled that extremely well I for one commend you for not shooting the bear ❤
    Well done sir, well done.

Just keep doing what you’re doing in your videos! I like the raw nature and rough editing technique that you use. Stands out from the slick formatted and commercial style that is getting way too common. My wife agrees! She’s tired of the ones that have turned into commercial ads! Have a great week and stay safe!

The bunker is fascinating, I think it being covered in the ground would've been very warm in winter. It also makes it very difficult to see it, so that might've been the reason. It's still really interesting and the fact that it's still there says a lot about how well built it is. Wow.👍

Looks like it was a good week. Lots of hard work for preparation. Get your cabin built, plant your garden, try and build a moose fence for the veggies and then get that trail open. Once you get the ATV to the property it will be so much easier for you. You know all this though, you got this.

Those dugout-style houses were really popular in the central US 100+ years ago. They are somewhat tornado proof.
