Mat has done a great job with the carts (they still sound fabulous to this day) and detail you added of Kenny and his wayward radio
career is excellent. It is nice to see what the 8 track player was being prepared for. A very nice surprise.
Sorry about the fuss caused by the inclusion of the Carpenters cart. I honestly didn't know that's what is was.
I haven't heard these carts since the final days of Radio Victory in June 1986 so memories fade......
Since then they have been tucked away and long forgotten and I wrongly assumed all six were Kenny jingles.
I got in touch with Mat a few weeks ago when I found the carts again, knowing Mat had done carts on the channel before.
He jumped at the chance of having them to make a video with and I was over the moon at being able to hear them again.
I do feel some guilt that he had to import a new cart machine to be able to play them in stereo. So kind.
Kenny was a friend of mine for a very short time before he passed away, he even made personalised vocoder jingles for me
when I was on Hospital Radio. We often exchanged 'pen friend' letters to each other.
I will be releasing the copy of the jingles on my channel once this video is made public and as Mat mentioned, I hope to sell them
and donate the proceeds to the Royal Naval Benevolent Trust.
You can listen to lots of Kenny Everett on my channel, some very rare jingles and clips.
The carts Mat has dubbed for us in this video are very special to me as they come from the radio station I so enjoyed working at
for 18 months before it's demise.
Thanks Again Mat, I am delighted to hear these again and to actually see them playing again is a proper treat.
It was a nice touch that you hit the cue button first. Proper DJ stuff that is!

6:53 8:40 11:37 - I’m not familiar with Kenny Everett, but DAMN these jingles are high quality and sound like something you’d hear on the radio even today: pitch shifting, multiple layered voices, reverb, stereo voice effects. All through an amazing audio compressor, giving his voice silky smooth power without sounding over-strained.

    • @paulhaynes8045
      @paulhaynes8045 ปีที่แล้ว +25

He was a genius - no exaggeration. His Radio 1 shows were an absolute wonder. They even included a regluar space-based story slot, with Kenny doing all the voices. Absolutely wonderful stuff. Unfortunately, he was a gay man at a time when that really wasn't tolerated, so stayed in the closet for most of his life, even being married for a while. Almost inevitably, given the time, he caught HIV and died of Aids when he was only 50 - just 4 years after Freddie Mercury, who was much the same age, and whom he helped make into a star by playing Bohemium Rhapsody when no one else would touch it. If you listen to BR and one of Kenny's more complex jingles the similarity is almost spooky.

I totally conquer he was an absolute genius & meticulous at details. I remember watching his T.V. programmes here in New Zealand in the 80's - he was pretty game at pushing the boundries as far as possible.
He was certainly an innovative type, very experimental with audio & visual images too.

Here in Finland Kenny Everett is quite well known, at least to people my age (I'm 53). Finnish TV showed a lot of britcom in the 80's (Benny Hill, Bottle Boys, Kenny Everett, Hale and Pace etc.), so we basically grew up with that (and learned a bit of English as an added bonus). Kenny and Benny were my favorites of them, and I especially appreciated all the video effects and tricks Kenny used in his shows. It was all of course done in the best possible taste too.

I am glad to see Kenny Everett getting the recognition he deserves, as a pioneer of pop radio. From his earliest pirate days on the MV Galaxy, for Radio London, through his various comings and goings for the BBC, his days at Radio Luxembourg (the great 208) and his domination of the London radio scene with Capital Radio in the 70's and 80's - Kenny was a breath of fresh air and a unique creative talent on the radio. His production skills were astounding - he produced audio masterpiece sounds with reels of tape and personally developed techniques, that you would be hard pressed to re-create with the best sound waveform software technology available today. Most people here probably know him best for his TV work, but check out his extensive radio career - have a listen, remember when it was done.... and be amazed.

It is pretty amazing. Despite not having any tape guides/heads in the carts to wear the tape down, the tape would still have worn from its frequency of being played (I think the cart machines played the tape quite fast as well - more like reel-to-reel speed than cassette/cartridge). And, typically, they weren't looked after too well in the studio. Also, there's the problem that all wound magnetic tape suffers from, of the signal being magnetically imprinted on the tapre next to it. So, with extreme examples, you can hear a slightly out of time 'echo' of the recorded material when you play the tape back, sometimes several 'echos'. If these carts realy hadn't been played for so long, it is almost miraculous that they work at all, let alone sound so good!

For those who didn't know who Everett was, Kenny was an amazing character and a talented presenter with a mischievous sense of humour. He is played in the movie Bohemian Rhapsody by Dickie Beau and was indeed the first DJ to play Bohemian Rhapsody in full after BBC radio refused to play it due to its length, so Freddie Mercury talked Kenny into playing it at the commercial Capital Radio station (apparently Kenny loved it hence why he kept playing it over and over again until it became a monster hit). Kenny was also in a comedy horror movie called 'Bloodbath at the house of death' in the mid 80s. He was amusing, witty, sometimes controversial (check out his address to the audience at the 1983 Tory Party conference) but never dull. He was also one of the few DJ's who British musicians had time for and people like Kate Bush and David Bowie were more than happy to appear on his shows despite knowing he would lightly mock them. Sadly he passed away in 1995.

I really enjoyed this video. I had known about Kenny Everett but didn’t realize how innovative and tech heavy he was back then. It also was a walk down memory lane for me and my time at the college radio station as a freshman in the late 80s. Carts were still in heavy use and we would have fun sessions of coming up with jingles and IDs and such to be put into rotation and each DJ had their own stash of carts for their show. One friend of mine used to have this huge duffel bag full of carts for his show he would carry in to the station every week. This was just as digital was starting to come in and the station made an investment in it. CDs were just entering rotation. My friend toward our senior year walked in without his big duffel bag of carts and I asked about it. He pulled a DAT out of his pocket: it’s all on here now.

I heard a story that when he returned to BBC Radio 1 after his sacking, it was on condition that his show was pre recorded and sent to London by train ( from South Wales where he was living at the time) where it would be "vetted" before being broadcast. He was well known for pushing the envelope. I miss Kenny from Capital Gold 194 which was where he was working when the news broke that he was HIV+. There is also a tape around of jingle he made up for a kid who wrote to him saying they wanted to be a dj.

Kenny was a genius. The recent and somewhat baffling hand wringing over the woeful Steve Wright finally getting the boot shows just how far the radio/DJ profession has sunk.

Everett wasn't just good, he was f****** brilliant. The best DJ by far. No one has the talent he had. He was sacked by the BBC at least once and was forced to pre-record his programmes and send them in for broadcast. He would make up sketches while his live show was being broadcast. So many voices, totally innovative. A true genius of radio and later tv. To say Kenny was 'good' is like saying The moon is a car ride away.

I had never heard of Kenny Everett before, but I immediately recognized the style. In 1997 a classic computer game called Theme Hospital was released. It's a humorous hospital management sim. Some of the people who work on it wanted to do a modern version, but the company that owned the rights wouldn't let them use the name, so they called it Two Point Hospital. In this hospital there's radio playing and it's now perfectly clear to me that whoever plays the dj there was extremely inspired by Everett.

How very interesting. I lived in Portsmouth in the 80's and remember radio Victory, but didn't recall any Kenny stuff - so glad you dated it back to the 70's. I'd heard about how he used to come up with his own home made jingles and things - although this seems more impressive that he must have come up with a series of jingles for each and every radio station that syndicated his show. I must admit that being a young teenager when his TV shows were on, "Hot Gossip" was one of the most memorable parts of his shows :)

I think Kenny and Cleo (Rocos) were my 2 favourite folk (Cleo, for her more 'physical' attributes) on TV when Kenny did the KEVS and then the KETVS in the late 70s early 80s.

I'm from Finland and I am sure many of my fellow 40somethings here know of Kenny Everett. His show was on tv in the 80s.
I remember one time I and my sisters had gone to bed already and dad came to wake us up because he had forgotten that Kenny Everett's show was on that evening. It was one of our favourites. Mind you, we didn't speak or read english so didn't really understand much of it and only as an adult it has dawned on me how "adult" some of it was. But we loved all the characters and Kenny's energy...and still do.

Just beautiful. Kinda makes me want to give 'The Boat that Rocked' a re-watch.
I'm too young to have experienced the pirate radio station thing as it were, but when I told my parents about the movie (they were born in 1951 and 1954 respectively), they both chimed in on remembering a pirate radio station that (sometimes?) made it's broadcasts all the way over to Iceland.

Phew, you had me worried for a minute. I thought that all the years I spent listening to the amazing Kenny Everett on Capital Radio in London (when it was only London based) had all been a sham, and that I'd just been listening to syndicated recordings he'd made in his front room! But Wikipedia informs me that he was actually there in person at Capital. 😁 His jingles were incredible though, and I can still hear one in my head that accompanied a phone-in situation he did, where he would sing "Just cram your finger in the dial..." (yes any young people reading this, phones used to have dials!).
Someone else who made great jingles for Capital, and who actually got a brief mention by Kenny in this video, was Christopher Rainbow, who also had a minor hit with the song 'Solid State Brain' (played a lot on Capital). You can hear some of them on TH-cam, they always take me straight back to my childhood. 😊

Yesssss Kenny on Radio Victory was a thing for us back in the day he was on at the weekends as I remember. His stylings and way he delivered his brand of fun was worth it. We bought a Grundig concert boy radio, second hand from our local shop when we lived on the Isle of Wight. Best thing we did for radio. Everything sounded so much better on that compared to our tiny trannies for listening to Radio Luxemboug at night under the sheets for the big top 20..oh yes you took me back alright Loving your videos 😃

@@Super8Rescue That was no different in the eighties. Format radio, hot clock and stuff was all there yet the stations didn't face such a stiff competition as they do now. We didn't have tens of thousands of radio stations and virtually any song ever produced just a click away. Radio hosts-or at least those who took this denomination seriously-were celebrities and mostly got away with stuff that might get you cancelled today. They were anarchic, fun and made you laugh.
