    Thank you for producing this informative video. A third generation Californian, I grew up playing in neighboring avocado orchards. I enjoy eating avocados and, of course, guacamole. However, beyond picking the fruit, I really didn't know the commercial harvesting process. Impressive!

    For a small scale farmer this seems a large operation. Thanks for the informative video

      The avocado orchard shown in the harvesting portion is a small grower.

    Question at what point do you gas the avocados to help them with the ripening stage ?

    And exactly how do the packers know which avocados are organic? The individual avocado tells the line worker??

    How long does it take to get from the tree to the grocery store?

    serious question here: i've been on the west coast for a decade, and got in to avocados immediately. a few years ago we would get avocados from california in the fall. i don't think i've seen a california avocado in a grocery store (safeway, raleys), for 3 years. we used to get good ones with small pits that were nutty in flavor and smooth inside. now its the imported ones with massive pits, thick skin, that go from rock hard to brown quickly.

      There are a few things here: California avocados are not harvested year-round, so there is an availability issue. Also, there are not as many California avocado growers as there used to be. The issue with getting imported avocados is that other countries do not uphold the same harvesting requirements (a certain % of oil content) as the CA grown avocados, so you might find that it is harder for the imported avocados to ever ripen.

    I was under the impression that nitrogen was used to slow the ripening process of some produce. Do you have any info on this process , if it that is true or not? Thank you

    • @Theproducenerd
      @Theproducenerd  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      1-MCP is used to combat ethylene to slow down the ripening process of certain fruits.

    how do they know which avocados are organic and which are conventional? they all arrived in the same truck :)

    • @Theproducenerd
      @Theproducenerd  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The organic and conventional avocados arrive in separate bins from the field and are maintained separate during the packing process.

    Thank you for the video. which company is it? the packing houses must be close to the farms? how many distribution centers are there usually?

    • @Theproducenerd
      @Theproducenerd  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a Mission Produce packinghouse, that is located in a high producing avocado area in California. The amount of distribution centers and packinghouses really depends on the size of the company and if they are packing from outside growers as well.

      Maybe you should apply, instead of going to college for a degree you won't use and gaining a debt you won't pay back.
