A lot of the "weird" pronunciations of Oklahoma towns come from their roots as Native American words. Chickasha is a Choctaw word. Miami (pronounced mi-yam-uh) comes from the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma. Checotah was named after a Creek Nation chief. Even the name Oklahoma comes from the Choctaw words okla and humma, meaning "red people" or, more formally, "Land of the Red Man". This is a state built and inhabited by Native American tribes, and the culture of those tribes is the lifeblood of our state.

Speaking as someone who grew up in Oklahoma, it is NOT a southern state. We are pretty much the only state that doesn’t fit in any of the regions. We aren’t Southern, we aren’t part of the Plains, and we aren’t Midwest. We are Oklahoma.

I've lived in at least one of these places, and YES, Oklahoma is most DEFINITELY a Southern State. The further south you go, the more southern you get and I don't mean the directions, either. If you REALLY want a laugh, go up to middle Missouri. When we were stationed up there, I went exploring one day. I honest to God came across these towns: (In no particular order) Tightwad, XXL, Uranus, and last but not least, Climax. To make it worse, they had this store on the highway that I HOPE was not a market of some kind. It was called "The Friendly Little Climax Market." I turned around and went back and took a picture. I was afraid no one would ever believe a place like that existed. Of course, this was back a good many years ago. I did manage to find a picture of it online. Too strange.

I'm in Moore. It's hot and humid in the summer, so it's southern. But there's nothing to stop the wind in the winter, so it's northern. Hell, we're right in the middle, so who knows . 😜
Having nothing to stop the wind in the winter time actually makes us a Southern state. Because northern states have snow to absorb all the cold air in the wind. Where is in a South you only have hard ground so it just bounces off and we get the full force of it. So that makes us a Southern state.

I spent a couple of summers in Durant about 40 years ago. Achille is a little flyspeck town south of there. Some of the locals had a little fun with this AZ kid by quizzing me on how I thought "Atch-lee" was spelled. They really de-emphasized the "uh" in the middle but it might have been there, it's a 40 year old memory after all.

my granny is from Mena Arkansas and she even says that were Southern. People that have you ever been to Oklahoma say that we're not us Southern State. Or they've only been to one of our major cities like Lawton or Tulsa or the city.
I'm from Lawton OK and I'd say it's extremely southern. I have family both here and in TX and go back and forth between the two almost constantly, and I'd have to say if there's any difference in speech or mannerisms, then I can't Identify it.

My grandma was from Oklahoma and grew up during the depression. They ate black eyed peas, corn bread, and milk most nights for dinner. Although a very small meal it’s definitely a very southern one.

Having nothing to stop the wind in the winter time actually makes us a Southern state. Because northern states have snow to absorb all the cold air in the wind. Where is in a South you only have hard ground so it just bounces off and we get the full force of it. So that makes us a Southern state.

I spent a couple of summers in Durant about 40 years ago. Achille is a little flyspeck town south of there. Some of the locals had a little fun with this AZ kid by quizzing me on how I thought "Atch-lee" was spelled. They really de-emphasized the "uh" in the middle but it might have been there, it's a 40 year old memory after all.

It's a Choctaw name. "Bok" means "creek" and "chito" means "big". Bokchito: Creek Big or Big Creek.
Also, in Choctaw, the "i" makes a short "i" sound.

my granny is from Mena Arkansas and she even says that were Southern. People that have you ever been to Oklahoma say that we're not us Southern State. Or they've only been to one of our major cities like Lawton or Tulsa or the city.
It's really similar to a state like Ohio but we have cattle and rodeo like Texas.
I'm from Lawton OK and I'd say it's extremely southern. I have family both here and in TX and go back and forth between the two almost constantly, and I'd have to say if there's any difference in speech or mannerisms, then I can't Identify it.

My grandma was from Oklahoma and grew up during the depression. They ate black eyed peas, corn bread, and milk most nights for dinner. Although a very small meal it’s definitely a very southern one.
