      Absolutely!!! Everything about this song is perfect. The drum intro, the guitars, the guitar solos, and The Metal God's voice. I just saw Judas Priest this past summer and the drummer Scott Travis asked the crowd what song do you want to hear and mostly everyone screamed Painkiller.

    That vocal by Rob Halford is one of the mightiest, deadliest vocals you could hear in heavy metal. Some people just aren't used to this type of mighty screaming vocals.
    Love this song, pure expression of metal. Also try their other song "Beyond the Realms of Death".

    Priest are one of THE bands, when talking about "how metal shaped into what it is today". Part of the NWOBHV, inspired all the thrash bands of the early to mid 80's, along with Iron Maiden and motorhead. Their contribution to metal in general is nothing but legendary.
    So if black sabbath, rainbow (With Dio, RIP!), were "heavy metal", of the early to mid 70's, the new wave of British metal brought more speed, technicality, power and "heaviness" to the scene. Thrash metal was greatly inspired by it and by punk bands' rawness. Being anti mainstream also played a part.
    After thrash metal exploded and became very popular, the rest was history... Death metal took things to an extreme, black metal separated from death metal and took a different approach to what "extreme" is and in the 90's, dozens upon dozens of other genres were created (After the big bands of the 80's became the most gigantic bands in general, and metal started to get some rather impressive recognition by the mainstream).
    It was a shock to many when Rob came out of the closet ;) But, the leather wear which Priest were famous for, was an inspiration he got from gay bars... One of the greatest voices of heavy metal.

    If you're hearing these vocals for the first time they might be tough on the ears. However, they will grow on you after listening to it a couple of times and you will come to the conclusion that this is one of the best heavy metal songs ever. Also, Rob Halford has a very distinct voice on this album/song, if you go back to the Defenders of the Faith or even Sad Wings of Destiny era you'll see he had a completely different way of singing. If you want to check out this band again I recommend Victim of Changes.

      Orange Man his voice is not entirely what you heard here though. He has a rich booming baritone, as well as notes only dogs can hear and that is the real reason he is considered to be so good. Because he is not a one trick pony like other metal vocalists. He can fly across octaves in seconds. But yes, at the end of the day it is about taste.

    I'm sad you don't like Rob Halford's vocals. The higher octave vocals is very 80s (and pre-Grunge 90s), so it's an artifact of its time in a way, though you can still find metal genres that use that sort of singing. Halford is amazingly talented and has a large vocal range; Google says from C#2 to C6, so 4 octaves. You might have to listen to a lot of 80s metal bands to pick up on how much more talented he is than most singers

    • @vinapocalypse
      @vinapocalypse 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      But toning it down would be antithetical to the 80s, a decade of excess lol
      A good musical counterpoint to this song from this album might be "A Touch of Evil" which isn't about actual evil, but about BDSM lol

    • @Progster0192
      @Progster0192 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've always seen the song lyrics in a different way. Rob has dealt with the homosexuality thing his whole career. The church for instance sees homosexuality as a sin and evil so "a touch of evil" sounds to me like he's talking about that. The song IS about evil, BUT he has hinted on the sexuality thing in interviews when talking about that song as well..

    • @vinapocalypse
      @vinapocalypse 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      For sure, I can see that, and is probably more correct:
      "A dark angel of sin
      Preying deep from within
      Come take me in
      I'm so afraid
      But I still feed the flame"

    Lead singer is Rob Halford - widely regarded as one of the great metal singers. Definitely a different tone. Will be interested when you listen to King Diamond/Mercyful Fate...even more extreme vocally. This album is not a concept album...especially in older metal lyrics are sometimes vague or simple or just jump on some concept and goes with it. Judas Priest is definitely one of the foundational metal bands...have to understand in their prime/start they were the extreme of the extreme even though today we listen and it feels mainstream.

    • @infinite_ammo
      @infinite_ammo 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      All correct except they were not in their prime when they recorded this album. Painkiller was a turning point for the band and the whole metal scene but it came out in 1990... Judas Priest has been around since the 70's and they weren't this extreme

    • @ChicagoTRS
      @ChicagoTRS 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did not mean to imply this particular song was their prime...to be honest I do not like this song much and feel this is when Priest sort of sold out to try and sound thrash or more modern to the current era. I meant to say when Priest started in the mid 70s they were the most extreme metal of that generation but listening to it today we would not understand that it was extreme because it sounds tame compared to some of what came after.

HALFORD is the best metal singer of all time...better than Ozzy Osbourne, better than Ronnie James Dio, and sure as hell is better than Bruce Dickenson. He did sing this song all high-pitched (not falsetto, it's full-voiced), which is unusual...other tunes show his 4-octave range better. VinAnd Sori As far as those vocals go, I think it's just an adaptive thing (like getting used to death or black metal vocals.) Halford went ALL out on that track. I've seen a lot of videos where you guys stop the music and give input on lyrics due to personal experiences like with slipknots snuff reaction and you guys were spot on with everything that was said. I'm not a Christian, but I absolutely enjoy that you are unapologetic about your faith. Judas Priest started in... 1969
    .. so, there a bit before all the other metal bands, and in fact, lots of metal bands were influenced by them.
    They have quite a catalogue, and this is a real pleasure to get right back in it, songs i've got originally on tape.
    I'm am used to the high pitch that Mr Halford is using. I enjoy the wide range he's capable of.
    And also all the other way of singing in metal, clean or not, growl or not whatsoever, if the music is great, go for it! (and by music i also mean the vocals).
    This is a masterpiece in metal, really heavy, and fast, and hard. The note he is keeping at the end, it's just amazing.
    Just love it.

      No disrespecting Dio, the man is a legend and rightly so... but Rob has him beat, hands down.
      For male vocalists in classic metal, meaning 70s up to early 90s, I think Rob is the clear master, at least as far as technique and range goes.
      Dio and Bruce Dickinson are up there with him *if* you include personal taste and how good they are in "context" meaning how well they fit their style of music e.g if I had to choose between Bruce or Rob singing Run to the Hills I ofc take Bruce over Rob but if you were to put them both on a neutral song Id most likely pick Rob 9 times out of 10.

    You need to also understand some more context of what went down with this band prior to the release of this album. This album fallowed a really messy court trial the band was involved in, which was about young adults who made a suicide pact with each other. The two men (18 and 20 years old) spent six hours listening to the Judas Priest record, Stained Class, while drinking and smoking marijuana which ended with each taking a turn putting a shotgun to their face and pulling the trigger. One of them died instantly but the other survived.
    The surviving victim and his parents sued the band, claiming that the band had planted subliminal messages in the song, Better By You Better Than Me", that when played backwards you can subjectively here the words "Do It" over and over. They played the song backwards and forwards and backwards sped up over and over during the trial. However, it was determined that the victims substance abuse was ultimately to blame for the suicide pact he and his friend made that day, and the band was never claimed responsible for the events that transpired. Painkiller is the result of that trial. The band had a lot of pent up anger and frustration after that trial and it really shows on this song and this album. You wish the singer would have held back, but I disagree. That singing is what this song needed. It's part of what makes this song so awesome!

    In the mid 70's, while alice cooper was becoming vary famous, and deep purple was was broken up (for a while), Richie Blackmore and Dio formed Rainbow, and Judas Priest released their second album.
    Thus, was the birth of power metal, and it's infamous use of operatic vocals to make their voices louder than anyone had ever been before.
    Shortly after Mr Bruce Dickinson joined in on the epic history of this superior form of metal, and inspired many more countless metal bands to come.
    After this, the invasion of the N.W.O.B.H.M. was afoot, America, knew not what was in store for them.
    This invasion was met with both praise and outrage, but ultimately, victory was to the invaders.
    you may not like Rob's voice right now, but you will, you will yearn for the sound of those steel lungs, the high pitched bellows will ring in your ears, encouraging your thirst for more.
    If you want to hear Rob Halford at his absolute best, listen to Resurrection, the title track from his debut solo album.
