Lucky that you're riding a broad gauge train. Previously it was a meter gauge train so cramped scootting each other. Earlier when a ship comes the bridge opens into two and closes in the middle of the ocean. Later the operation was stopped in the Palk Strait.

The older bridge was destroyed completely due to a super cyclone in that region years ago (I don't remember the exact year though).. and back then engineers made this current bridge that too within few months.. those are the debris from that older bridge..
This journey is mesmerising and once in a life experience. I was awestruck to find myself into the middle of a vast ocean , abroad a train , a large and heavy moving iron vehicle. Sounds scary! But all my hitchs vanished when the train kept moving on and we suddenly saw silhouette of an island on that vast sea coming closer. This was just amazing, beautiful and beyond words.
