In 1993 in france we could choose à text for the baccalauréat, upgrade to university.
I was a great Pogues fan, so I took this song- the examiner kept the song for her students and gave me 16/20.
    Thanks, mr Chevron!

As much as I love Shane's voice, this version of the song is something so pristine I could fill a couple of pages with cliche's trying to describe it. Fear not, I won't. So just have my thanks for posting it on TH-cam. You're the best.

When I saw the Pogues in Boston all those years ago Joe Strummer filled in for Shane. There was no announcement prior to ticket sales either. Joe came out on stage and said something along the lines of ' I'm Joe Strummer - I'm filling in for Shane MacGowan, if you don't like you can *&&((&* ' and then the entire band burst into a song. I've still no recollection of what song because I was so blown away that Joe Strummer of the Clash was on stage. Anyway, Phil Chevron played the above piece but so much faster than Shane. It wasn't a slow song at all - it was pounding fast and vibrant. I'll never forget it. Just wish I would find a version of what I heard so long ago.

@@Bunkerhillburning I’ve seen them three times. Once led by Spider Stacy, the last time Shane was back, and once led by Joe Strummer. I was so lucky. Never got to see The Clash but this line up was so wonderful.

Phil wrote the song and had released it as a single ( which I still have ) prior to joining the Pogues. He was a really lovely, friendly guy, one of the best.

I got to see him sing it in Boston back in the 90's (Joe Strummer subbed after they fired Shane). I was rather surprised The Orpheum was still standing after that show. It was magical, and nobody sat down during their performance.

A million thanks to Moog Bass for this priceless video. No one can replace Shane MacGowan, but no one can replace Philip Chevron either -- a great singer, musician and songwriter in his own right. RIP Phil.
Also: I've just finished James Fearnley's "Here Comes Everybody", and from the descriptions in the final chapter I get the impression that this performance of Thousands Are Sailing occurred just after the band had sacked Shane (who seemed to have expected, even welcomed, it). Makes it all the more poignant, if that's the case.

Thank you, I must admit this is my favourite version. Usually the songwriters version is the best. More feeling.
James book is tremendous, I think I've read it six times! This was Shane's last gig - They sacked him in the hotel afterwards. The whole gig is here - th-cam.com/video/BjpOv5fc7FA/w-d-xo.html

Moog Bass WOW! Thanks for sharing. I’ve seen The Pogues 3 times; once during Shane’s hiatus, led by Spider Stacey, one blessed by Joe Strummer and once, most recently with Shane. How I’m moved by their music. Written from the POV of an Irish man, it could well have come from an immigrant of any nationality. It could have come from my father, an Armenian from the first wave, running for their lives, shortly before the genocide. This song always gives me the chills.
