This is the national anthem of the Irish diaspora in America, there’s not one of us to whom this song does not resonate with, in a profoundly unique way. Bless Phil, The Pogues and the incomparable Shane MacGowan. Slainte.
I have been a fan of the Pogues since the mid-80s and I have always thought that Shane MacGowan is one of the best songwriters of all time - but then it is a funny coincidence that my favourite Pogues-song (which is this one) is written by Phil Chevron. Goes to show you that there were more great songwriters in the Pogues than good ol' Shane.
God bless Phil and the absolutely magnificent Shane, I reckon they’re up there enjoying a pint or two and shaking the doors of heaven with this brilliant tune. RIP you gorgeous men, you are so missed but thankful for your music
This song means a lot to many people in Norway too. Between 1820 and 1920, around 800,000 Norwegians emigrated to the USA and Canada. Norway, together with Ireland with as many as two million emigrants, became the countries with the largest emigration in relation to the population. In 1820 it was 1 million people in Norway. In 1920 it was 2.5 mill.
saw them for the first time in NYC on the 13th... and i have to say, not only the best show i've ever seen, but with Phil Chevron singing this, i almost cried
A unique gang of lads some great songs both words and music . Who else comes close who else does or did such different performances with all included for the price.
I captured and encoded it from a very rare (took forever to find a copy for sale) out-of-print laserdisc. And then I had to buy a laserdisc player just to play it. It was well worth the time and money, though.
The island, it is silent now But the ghosts still haunt the waves And the torch lights up a famished man Who fortune could not save Did you work upon the railroad? Did you rid the streets of crime? Were your dollars from the White House? Were they from the Five-and-Dime? Did the old songs taunt or cheer you? And did they still make you cry? Did you count the months and years Or did your teardrops quickly dry? "Ah, no", says he, "it was not to be On a coffin ship I came here And I never even got so far That they could change my name" Thousands are sailing Across the western ocean To a land of opportunity That some of them will never see Fortune prevailing Across the western ocean Their bellies full Their spirits free They'll break the chains of poverty And they'll dance In Manhattan's desert twilight In the death of afternoon We stepped hand in hand on Broadway Like the first man on the moon And a blackbird broke the silence As you whistled it so sweet And in Brendan Behan's footsteps I danced up and down the street Then we said goodnight to Broadway Giving it our best regards Tipped our hats to Mister Cohen Dear old Times Square's favourite bard Then we raised a glass to JFK And a dozen more besides When I got back to my empty room I suppose I must have cried Thousands are sailing Again across the ocean Where the hand of opportunity Draws tickets in a lottery Postcards we're mailing Of sky light skies and oceans From rooms the daylight never sees And lights don't glow on Christmas trees And we danced to the music And we danced Thousands are sailing Across the western ocean Where the hand of opportunity Draws tickets in a lottery Where e'er we go, we celebrate The land that makes us refugees From fear of priests with empty plates From guilt and weeping effigies Still we dance to the music And we dance
This song reminds me of my great great Grandfather whos parents put him on the ship alone when he was just a little boy. Remind myself that when im having a "hard" time.
We are ! Happy St Patrick's Day ! Thousands are trying to get in after the Trump reign of terror. Wish Joe luck & stay safe darlin donkeyheads ! Maggie & Mike (;

Ya ,I think if Behan or Cohen or McGowan wrote it,it'd have would have got more recognition ....An absolute gem of songwriting
No greater prose has been put to paper describing the Irish affiliation with emigration

The island, it is silent now
But the ghosts still haunt the waves
And the torch lights up a famished man
Who fortune could not save
Did you work upon the railroad?
Did you rid the streets of crime?
Were your dollars from the White House?
Were they from the Five-and-Dime?
Did the old songs taunt or cheer you?
And did they still make you cry?
Did you count the months and years
Or did your teardrops quickly dry?
"Ah, no", says he, "it was not to be
On a coffin ship I came here
And I never even got so far
That they could change my name"
Thousands are sailing
Across the western ocean
To a land of opportunity
That some of them will never see
Fortune prevailing
Across the western ocean
Their bellies full
Their spirits free
They'll break the chains of poverty
And they'll dance
In Manhattan's desert twilight
In the death of afternoon
We stepped hand in hand on Broadway
Like the first man on the moon
And a blackbird broke the silence
As you whistled it so sweet
And in Brendan Behan's footsteps
I danced up and down the street
Then we said goodnight to Broadway
Giving it our best regards
Tipped our hats to Mister Cohen
Dear old Times Square's favourite bard
Then we raised a glass to JFK
And a dozen more besides
When I got back to my empty room
I suppose I must have cried
Thousands are sailing
Again across the ocean
Where the hand of opportunity
Draws tickets in a lottery
Postcards we're mailing
Of sky light skies and oceans
From rooms the daylight never sees
And lights don't glow on Christmas trees
And we danced to the music
And we danced
Thousands are sailing
Across the western ocean
Where the hand of opportunity
Draws tickets in a lottery
Where e'er we go, we celebrate
The land that makes us refugees
From fear of priests with empty plates
From guilt and weeping effigies
Still we dance to the music
And we dance
Mr Cohan, not Cohen. .. George M Cohan.

In my opinion there have been only two European bands "living their music on stage": The Pogues and "Hubert von Goisern & die Alpinkatzen".
