I'm not going to say your wrong but when people think of burn decks they don't really think of decks like Branded, Swordsoul, or Kashtira where you can play cards like Red-Eyes Flare Metal, Masquerade, Sinister Sovereign Longyuan, and Longyuan and still actually be playing good decks. The definition of a burn deck is not a deck that plays gimmicky spell/trap cards. A burn deck is any deck you can build that can FTK or OTK with burn damage. Its never been said that they can't have a alternative plan or end board. I mean look thats what Gimmick Puppet does. Gimmick Puppets a modern day burn deck and a FTK/OTK deck. No one can really give a excuse why it isn't because back in the day people were calling Trickstar a burn deck. If a deck like Trickstar is considered by the masses to be a burn deck playing good decks like Kashtira that can use Flare Metal or Gimmick Puppet are to.

Fully agree. I tried returning just for casually playing the game but it seems it’s built for this “type” of gameplay. If anyone is familiar with fighting games, I compare yugioh to most vs games (mvc or dragonball fighterz) where you can get infinites going to pretty much destroy your opponent. While I feel flesh and blood is closer to an actual fighting game such as sf or Tekken with the pokes and few juggles. You can enjoy the game with someone who doesn’t have as much or just as much CB knowledge as you but more likely you’ll play someone who wants to make those combos like mvc and you’ll just lose for not having the experience.

I am not liking how how they are rushing us in to the current TCG meta in the DL format in a slipshod way instead of a more measured one. We are about to get Nibiru and more. We just got Unchained. I am still recovering from the Masterflare Hyperion drop. I am surprised the Tenyi equiv is not played more though. I mainly do a set of pet decks involving odd-eyes, BEWD, and various pends. I play mostly Edison-compatible decks in DL. The reason is because many only look at the current meta while the past has tech that can overcome the new.

The last one is interesting. I think that if, hypothetically, EVERYBODY started playing retro formats, it would force Konami to adapt to what people are interested in. They would probably start making new cards for retro formats rather than continue to force something that people don't like. Similar to how Commander in MTG started as a fan format (like edison or GOAT) and wizards officially adopted around 2011. Now cards are designed with Commander in mind.
Imagine a world where we could get retro-format specific boosters. reprints and new cards specifically tuned for that power level.

Almost half of them are ocg japan and master duel revenue contributing at around 800m, which means tcg side doesnt exactly have high consumtion of products compared to japan, not including china and entire sea asia which probably around 200-300m.
You cant really force players in Asia to play retro because we already have Rush duel for that, elemental hero structure deck is a great thing because its introduce core essense of yugioh in Rush duel, archetype focus.

Some Ygo players are ALWAYS trying to put other card games in the pit with themselves when Ygo has issues. It NEVER fails. Every single time. Deflection-mode activated!!!
It's also a lie because you can easily google search, "mtg Standard meta 2024" and see ygo is absolutely and utterly destroyed in deck variety, deck style and deck cost. Look at the meta share percentage of the decks.
Ygo has nothing close to the deck building creativity of Commander. Commander is impossible in Ygo since it has no resource system.
The only ways to make a *viable* ygo deck is to do turbo stun and negate boards. What's a *viable* win condition in Ygo besides boss monsters? I'll be waiting for an answer.
I mean there's no pure aggro, control or mid-range (because there's no mid game, just: Start->End board turn ONE). The game has obsoleted a bunch of it's own foundational mechanics (traps, flip effects, tribute summoning, ect) because of its nonsensical pacing.
Games being decided by one's opening hand makes for an extremely sacky, degenerate and luck-based environment. 90% of cards in the game aren't given the time to do their effects because of the pacing. Why even buy products?
Ygo's battle phase is just a means to an end and has no strategic value and is comically *binary* . Attack power and negation are EVERYTHING in Ygo.
*Article* : Philosophy of Combo by Melissa DeTora
It literally explains the main issues with Ygo that can only be fixed by *new rules* and not an annual ban list cycle that only makes way for new power creep every few months.

One of reasons for keyword bloat at this point in the game’s lifecycle that people rarely mention is that keywords aren’t just used for clarity, they’re also used for marketing as well. When WotC releases a new product, players want to see the new and shiny keywords, even if they’re just small variations on familiar ideas. Some of these tend to show up once and then never again, making them difficult to learn due to relative scarcity.

Hot Take: I think the Yu-gi-Oh product issue (decks being expensive, vendors not being able to have good stock, etc) can easily be solved. That it is more or less solved by a TCG like Pokemon, and that the community (from what I've seen) rejects the notion as a viable solution because they don't want to say another card game does it better.
What I am talking about here specifically is all pack having 1 Ultra, 1 Super, 2 Rare, and 5 Common cards (holo not being tied to rarity). 1 card in the pack being holographic, 1 card in the pack being a fullart, and 1 card in the pack having a third effect (Such as ghost rare, collecter's markings etc). The budget player would easily be able to get there deck of just plain cards. The vast majority of players would seek to obtain their decks in at least one of the thre modifiers, if not two of the three. Then vendors and shops can make their money on cards that have the trifecta of modifiers and those cards who have at least two of the modifiers that would still be worth a bit.

I definitely agree with the hyper consistency, but not the same way. I don't necessarily want the consistency to go down so much as interaction go up. OTKs, OTLs, etc. just aren't very fun. I almost exclusively play GOAT Format(and some Edison) because the game during those times wasn't just about fulfilling your deck's goals, but reacting to and stopping your opponents attempts to try and get their deck going. The only deck I play with in modern format is Crusadia/Guardragon(and only Traditional because I play with a couple cards that are forbidden in advanced) because it doesn't feel like I lose on coin flip(at least not as much). The deck actually has some ability to punch through and there's at least SMALL hope at a comeback.
My "hot" take would be what I mentioned before. I think the TCG needs more interaction. Not in the form of hand traps though. The amount of hand traps in the game is staggering and needs to go away. There should be more back and forth in a duel, not win the coin flip and win 90% of the time.
EDIT: Just thought of another. For the love of all things holy, give me a Yu-Gi-Oh game where I can import my physical cards/decks into the game and play with those. I've already bought the cards. I shouldn't need to earn/buy them again. If this exists already someone please enlighten my fragmented soul.

I used to go to them, and it was legitimately some of the freshest events I've played; people using their fun decks and having unique matchups.
Sadly, the format also has people who go "Okay, the meta of the last 4 formats is barred... I'll play the meta from 5 formats ago."

I guess I was thinking that cards could be given a score based on rarity/power level. Adding the cards together would give a deck score and a range for acceptable opponents.
      I.e.
      Dark Magician Deck = 560
      Tearlaments Deck = 980
      Thunder Dragon Deck = 750
Thunder dragon would be able to go against either deck but DM wouldn’t be able to face Tear because of the point gap.

My Hot Take: The fact that older formats in Yu-Gi-Oh! - like GOAT and Edison - are getting more populair is no surprise, seeing how many people experienced the game in the past. GOAT-format actually brought me back to the game and because of that I also tried out the current meta and even though I enjoy it somewhat, GOAT and Edison is still more enjoyable to me, since it's basically a different style of play than the current meta. When Master Duel has the Time Travel events, theres a lot of hype online from people who want to see more of the older formats in MD and irl and I think it will only keep growing from here.
The hot take in this one is that Konami should see this as an opportunity. Both the older formats as the current meta can co-exist and instead of reprinting older cards in new sets (which for a lot of players that enjoy the current meta are just filler cards), Konami should release sets beside the advanced format sets that mainly focuses on the older formats. These sets can also work as Draft sets at the same time, since Goat/Edison are ideal for a Draft style format.
I know 'money' would be an issue (releasing two sets at the same time and all), but I think Konami should embrace the love for the older formats while still focusing on the current meta. I don't see why older formats and the current one can't co-exists together in this day and age. If anything, it gives the community more color as there are many ways to play this game, just like there are many generations playing this game -old and young and it also can give newer players the chance to slowly learn the game the same way most of us learned it in the past.

6:27 Every time I see this take, I have to respond because it's always misrepresented. Every set keyword is printed with reminder text on every normal printing of each common and uncommon with that keyword, this is also true for rares in mythics assuming that space is available on the card. If a card does not have reminder text on it, it is either on a rare or mythic with lots of text, a special version of the card (special treatment, retro frame, etc), or is on an old card before WotC made this philosophy change. Evergreen keywords are given reminder text in intro level products as these should be first learned when entering the game, the equivalent of Yu-Gi-Oh's "piercing damage", "excavate", or "*type* summon".
If you are finding a constant need to double check rules text, it is due to the version of the cards being played or the format being played. Not to beat around the bush, this is a commander issue, not a keyword issue, and one of many reasons I hate that commander is pushed as the introductory format.

Combos in yugioh are inherently more confusing/unintuitive (and not new player friendly) compared to magic/hearthstone.
It wasnt until i saw rarran trying to be taught a "basic" combo in yugioh that i realized this. In magic, its very clear what each card does in a combo "i play this card to add more mana to my mana pool in order to summon this card that allows me to sack a creature to do damage to my opponent, but the creature i sack returns to the field with a -1/-1 that gets negated by this other card that adds a +1/+1 to all creatures, thus allowing me to do this indefinitely. No response? Then i win" with this combo, its very clear what each card does and their purpose.
In the rarran combo, it was so common for him to ask "wait, what does this card do?" And the guy basically went "its not important" because for the most part, its just a combo extender. In yugioh, youll play a card and then link summon it for another card that allows you to search for a card, then you link summon again into the same creature to bounce the original back into the extra deck which allows you to...". These combos only really make sense to someone who has played with those combos. But a novice player could never figure out these combos themselves when given a deck. While spice8rack isnt a novice magic player by any means, there is a clip of him seeing his cards and realizing the combo with a deck he never played.

To get the obvious effect of this rule out of the way, this kind of limit will kill pretty much all combo decks, most aggro decks, and a good amount of midrange decks, leaving control as the dominant strategy. The power of going first will if anything become even stronger because decks that go second will become more reliant on drawing their outs instead of being able to gas through interruptions.

One of the decks I use is Ghoti and I know playing defensive is very possible and I don't have to build the Pentagon to lock my opponent out of the game immediately to be competitive with it.
Being able plop down one's entire end-game strategy before the opponent gets to draw their 6th card of the game is completely broken game design/management. That type of formulaic gameplay would get monotonous very quickly. Literally auto-pilot.
Like in the article, being able to respond to the opponent's strategy *through the process of multiple turns* is a very vital element to balanced play.
Ygo having everyone running the same handtraps and board-breakers (what kind of stupid non-interactive concept is Kaiju and Lava Golem effects) just to *randomly* get a *chance* to get *a turn* is ridiculous and nonsensical. Even with that snake oil Konami created, things are only getting worse. They power crept their own snake oil. It's just a pyramid scheme in card form.
As soon as everyone and their grandparents have to do automatic allotment of very specific cards before they even create a deck just to get a *chance* to do anything, the game has put one foot in the grave. Stifling creativity is detrimental to such a game.
The only viable strategies in Ygo are turn-1 stun and negate boards. No pure aggro, control, or mid range (because there's no mid game in a turn-1 opening hand meta). Pigeoned-holed into a very limited amount of strategies. So much homogenization and focus on boss monsters. What's the point of buying cards if very few cards meet the turn-1 requirements?

@@containeduniverselow4790 1. When I say that combo decks won’t be able to function or compete, I’m talking about the deck-style combo. The example you provided “Ghoti” would be an example of an archetype that can function under a summon limit. However, that deck isn’t a good enough example to disprove my point, and your anecdotal evidence doesn’t prove anything.
      2. Imma just skip most of your comment, because it’s just ranting that doesn’t disprove anything I said.
      3. Ok? Everyone playing the same staples? That would hardly be any different under a summon limit, because now everyone is on the same board breakers and/or traps.
      4. Creativity under a summon limit will get much worse because now the only way to reasonably compete is to play mainly control. You might have some room for mid-range and aggro but not much, and on a game-wide scale, it’ll be minimal.
      5. Aggro, Mid-Range, and Control aren’t the best decks right now, but decks belonging to 2 of those strats are still playable (Aggro: Tenpai, Control: Runick). Meta can shift away from combo decks and has before.
You still haven’t disproven anything I’ve said nor proven how a 3-5 summon limit would make the game better. In practice, you’d stop long 1-turn combos and toned down the necessity for hand traps somewhat and that’s just about it. You don’t get more creative decks/strategies, and you don’t get rid of convenient/sacky staples. Some archetypes can reliably shift away from how they’re traditionally played but those are few.
Decks that summon more than 5 times to make good plays (Combo, most Aggro, and a good amount of Midrange)
Lose the ability to make good boards going first, are more susceptible to losing their investment to even the smallest piece of interruption, and can’t reliably gas through the opponent's board going second therefore making them more reliant on drawing outs/boardbreakers.
Decks that summon less than 5 times to make good plays (Control, some Aggro, and a good amount of midrange decks) Gain an even greater advantage going first because low-impact traps become more powerful, a much better going second game since they have to deal with fewer interruptions from the opponents going first board (unless the opp is on control as well).

Common Sense Take: 1 card combos (or 1 and a half) should NOT exist.
My real HotTake: We should have an additional banlist in combination with our current list... Yes. Two lists. One to limit cards and one to limit combos. Ex: You cannot play "Rhongomyniad" with "Gossip Shadow" or "Numbers Eveil" in the same deck. This way, we should be able to play some powerful cards and just limit it when the game would be broken.
CardFight Vanguard AND Digimon do this (having both banlist styles at the same time). Works pretty well.

If you can learn what the "attack phase" is, you can learn what "flying" is. It's also not something to worry about if you play the digital version of the game since it tells you what things mean. And if you're playing the physical cards, you're playing against someone else, someone who can help you quicker than grabbing your phone. Sounds like the problem you have with keywords is that you have to learn what they are...but to play ANY game you have to learn how it works and keywords are just a part of the game you need to learn.
The problem I see with it would be "errataing" all established cards and consolidating effects to be more uniform...or having multiple keywords that mean essentially the same thing just with slight differences. Which would be a lot easier on the digital version of the game since the information is there for you. But in the end you're either having to read a lot, or commit the cards to memory. The Keywords option is the same except you're remembering what the keyword means rather than what every card means and that would even make it easier to remember the cards too.
Like with most changes like this that are proposed, it's just too much too late in the game. What we need are a series of small changes that will eventually make big changes like this easier. But ultimately it's not up to us how this game is managed, we just have to roll with the punches.

An issue with trying to add keywords to Yugioh is not just that it makes it harder to get into a game but also that Yugioh's effects are so precise and nuanced that a single piece of punctuation or phrasing can change an effect and that's part of the game's appeal - if you think about it, the nuanced rules are kinda like the way of getting those "anime shenanigans" moments but in a consistent mechanical way. When you have, like, "My monster can't be targeted or destroyed by your cards," and you say, "this is a non-targeting sending removal!" or "You can't negate my monster effect, it sends for cost!"

Yu-Gi-Oh card descriptions are absolutely not clear and precise! They are definitely precise, but the important thing I think you're not realizing is that they *do* use keywords. What is summoning? What is special summoning? The 'keywords are bad because I have to learn them' argument is moot. You're going to memorize all the important cards in the meta and what they do anyway, learning the game is just part of the game. Keywords give you shortcuts so you don't need to actually need to read the four paragraphs on a card to figure out what they do. The real problem (as always) is overdoing things and letting them become too complex.

Magic's evergreen keywords are seen all the time from what I can tell, like Scry or Viligance or Trample, so those should be very easy to learn because of it. For Yugioh's, I think having a symbol (like MTG's tap) next to an effect that can be used once per turn alone could save a lot of space, like how there should be numbers for each effect. I don't know how many things could be reduced like this, like quick effects or effects while in the graveyard, but I imagine there's a decent number.

    re keywords:
    - they can also, themselves, add new mechanics to the game that wouldn't be possible otherwise. you couldn't have an equivalent of "flying" without a keyword because a big part of it is how it interacts with _other creatures with flying_. keywords become new properties of cards that other effects can then interact with, too: "Equipped creature has flying" or "Destroy all creatures with flying".
    - having keywords doesn't mean you have to have an endless parade of keywords. mtg does treat keywords as a space for experimentation, and tends to introduce a couple per block that may never see much use again, but there are a basic half a dozen that will get you through most of the game. (being thrown into commander does dump a lot of jargon on you at once though - the intended experience is usually to run into them on less-rare cards with reminder text, a set at a time.)
    - scry is an action, not a keyword ;)

On the video game bit, I like vs computer games not from a pride perspective, but that I can trust that the challenge is beatable. In PvP games, be it card games or shooters, sometimes the other team just trounces you, and while that can just happen from time to time, it can be frustrating when it's over and over in a row. While that can happen in video games, at least there you can go "Okay, this card they play keeps screwing me over, I need to put in something that's a counter to that" and adjust your strategy, but when you only get three games against a Blue-Eyes deck before needing to play against a Shaddoll deck, there's no opportunity for adjustment or trying again (I mean there's sideboards, but sometimes that's not enough)
That said, playing with actual people is definitely a big part of the fun of card games. But it needs to be in person for that to have effect, at least for me. Online, it just feels cold.

Also I don't think a new anime would help a lot in getting more people into the game. MTG doesn't need anything like that to attract new players, so an anime won't fix YGO's player problem imo

The problem with making a keyword system in Yugioh is that there's a lot of nuance to its effects, meaning there will most likely have to be a bunch of keywords that need to be made. Plus you'd have to rewrite every single card (aside from Normal Monsters) to include the keywords, which will take a lot of time and money. That's probably why Konami hasn't made one.

  • @alejandrofernandez4159
    @alejandrofernandez4159 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Hot take: Need a new Master Rule to slow things down A LOT. Special summoning from the extra deck in particular. To me Yu-Gi-Oh! is the most fun when the game state ebs and flows over time due to having to interact with your opponent. Also, Extra Deck monsters either being fodder or making 2/3 of the Cards in the game obsolete, since they basically are a Monster with Magic and Trap card effects, is just dumb and boring. Limiting the amount you can special summon right away is key. Have it be dependent on one forgotten aspect of the game: actually battling with your monsters. Special summoning could/be a simple formula like X+1(or even 0), where X is the amount of battles you've partaken in (yes, also as the defending palyer). Also, maybe switch it up a little. Special summoning in of itself isn't broken per se, so maybe give Special summoning from the extra deck that X+0, from the hand X+1 and from the Deck and Grave X+2.
Furthermore, make SETTING a card mean something again, especially monsters. Have set (monsters) cards be intrinsically "protected" where they can only be outed by cards that specifically target set cards (Noble man for example) , or having to use two effect to out it, one removes the protection and the other one actually gets rid of it. I'd even take it a step further, and make Flip effects spell speed 3, so counter cards also do something again, and introduce a new mechanic, like break through or something, where it bypasses "cannot be targeted" effects, because eff your omni negate, non targetable monster, I have man Eater bug!
Lastly, implement something like a rule of three, where no cards can be looped and/or used more than 3 times per turn, no matter what. Maybe even extend it to card effect that do similar things (searches from Deck, negates, revival from grave, etc. This would be where keywords come in handy), although that might be a little much.
I know that having to keep track of how many battles between monsters have happened might be a little tedious, but nothing a few sets of dice can't handle.
All in all, just slow the game down, make like 80% of cards somewhat viable again, and have actually dueling with your monster, and the battle phase in general matter again.

What i mean by this is for example, if im playing virtual world vs SEFS or SEFK (this could be determined by marking a cirtain amount/combination of cards, if u have ash poplar and flamberge its snake eye for example), becouse the deck is at best at a stretch rougue vs teir 0.5 you get to start with virtual wolrd city and lulu for example. Or being able to choose who goes first nomatter what or something.
Now this could incentiveise hand traps to be spammed in rouge decks so what if we limited card combinations, like you cannt have 3 ash, imperm veiler nibiru and shifter only a max of say 10. Though imo this is just jumping through hoops to say konami should stop releasing new cards for a bit and go back to every archetype and change/complete them with erratas making players able to still use the old vers but must use them as if they are the new ones while showing their opponents the new text online or something.

The anime take really hits home for me because while I had played Yu-Gi-Oh since like 2002 in its very early days, I never really learned how to "build" a deck, so I just threw together a bunch of stuff I liked. Banlists were a foreign concept to me since I never played in any competitive format back then, but in 2017 when I made a return to the game, and with help from a friend I met at work who plays, I took inspiration from Yugi and Kaiba and built my Dark Magician and Blue-Eyes decks, my oldest decks and the two I've taken the most pride in.

The worst part is when your opponent starts, runs a 2-3 card combo that turns into solitaire with the deck, and yanking out 3 or 4 Special Summons to lock you down. Then you're stuck and unable to play anything while they proceed to run you over.

  • @phoenixilr

I don't like the ultra long chain meta decks, I didn't come to watch you arrange your cards and then tell me I lost 💀 I play a simple yet effective Blue-eyes Ultimate Dragon deck that is on par with all my friend's decks so its more fun when we duel because it comes down to strategy when we have the same power level basically.
I do have some decks that are multi-step combos that allow me to win in one turn but thats only usable when I'm playing competitively and trying to win as many duels as possible, but in a casual setting at a card shop for fun I'm not gonna just start whooping some kid because I feel the need to always win. That is one of the problems I have with Yugioh, is soke decks seriously outmatch others. And, the problem is some people use those extremely powerful decks as a casual play deck and make the game not fun for everyone. I remember when I started playing at the age of ten, I would get my butt whooped by all the older guys in the card shop. I still played the game some more and eventually got my deck more powerful but I would usually win out of pure luck because my opponent didn't get "that card". I actually stopped playing for about 2 years because it was just not fun to duel anyone.

I think they should make more powerful cards be restrictive in what you can do after summoning boss monsters, like "You can only summon X type/attributes/archetype cards during the turn this card is summoned". Making 5+ different omni negates on turn 1 with a "single card combo" is kind of annoying.
Also, ocg does bullet points on their cards to differentiate effects, what effects can be used once per turn and it helps a lot.

    I got 2 Hot Takes:
    1) Yugioh needs a deck ranking system that takes your deck list and judges how much synergy/efficiency/consistency your deck has. Then duels should be played amongst decks of the same rank.
    2) We need a Speed World Format, a Action Duel Format, and a true Speed Duel format. Allow players to select from the three formats and add either a Speed World spell card for Turbo Duels, a deck of Action Cards set between players with draw conditions, and Speed Duels should just take skill card and the 3v3 field Format but use all available carda and not just Speed Duel Specific Cards.

Completely disagree with your take on keywords. Sure it is difficult at first, but it is a short term loss, very very long term gain. If you plan on playing the game for years, eventually you'll learn the keywords and it will be second nature, plus I highly doubt Yu-Gi-Oh will have as many as MTG.

A major issue with keywords in yugioh is the fact that keywords need to do the EXACT SAME THING every time or they do not work. Yugioh cards are too unique from one another for this to work. Even the cards that are similar like how most archetypes have a Stratos. Some search from deck, some from GY, some from banish, some add to hand, some banish. Some have a cost, some don't. Some are on normal summon, some are on any summon. etc. It doesn't work.

  • @DigitalxGamer
    @DigitalxGamer 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

Re: Summon methods ruin Yugioh by devaluing them into Materials - HARD disagree on that one. Summoning methods spice up the game completely. It's easy to say you're "devaluing cards into materials" but let's not forget that classic Yugioh did this EXACT thing. You were running some real crappy Light monsters to try to justify those Chaos Sorcerers. You were running a lot of fodder that liked to special summon themselves specifically so you could tribute them for a Monarch. Hell, you could even just be running a wall monster specifically so you could Tribute for a Summoned Skull. If that's not just using a monster as a material, then what is?
Ritual cards always existed. Fusion materials always existed. Hell, Synchro Summons are LITERALLY just Contact Fusions that give a monster's level a purpose. Power creep is inevitable in a card game because otherwise, there's no incentive to buy new cards. And as long as Yugioh allows you to special summon limitlessly, it will ALWAYS push special summons harder and harder. That's what old school Yugioh was doing pre-Synchro and that's what it will forever continue to do. THAT is the real source of Yugioh's accelerated power creep problem.

The thing about the keywords in magic is that they're only confusing when you encounter a keyword you don't know. But if you're building a deck, you'll know all of your keywords. And if you're playing against a pod of people with keywords you don't know, they'll tell you. It's still a better system than having 200 word essays in every card.

I'm going to throw out a take from way back when I was going deep into Yugioh (2008-2010), cards should either be at 0 or 3. Cards being at one just increases the luck based nature of the game. Some exceptions exist with cards that have a positive interaction with themself (Destiny Hero Malicious would be an example of such a card), but losing because your opponent just happened to draw the broken card they're forced to play one of is not a good feeling. This is especially true given how much more access we have to most of the cards in decks and how easy it is to keep recycling stuff.
