    I live very close to Mousehold Heath, somewhere along Silver Road, and I always like going out for walks around the heath usually by walking along Gilman Road and then into the woods, right up to where Vinegar Pond is and straight back to Gilman Road again. I always love to go there in the evenings just to get away from the noisy streets of Norwich and there is a particular spot I always love to sit where I could listen to the sounds of nature (especially the sounds of song thrushes and blackbirds). Even though it is usually quiet, you can still hear the vehicles on nearby Gurney Road. But apart from that, it is such a peaceful place to be.

      Yes if you can find the right place and right time in Mousehold, it's a million miles from anywhere!

    I’ve lived in Norwich for nineteen years (originally from York) and I’ve never been on the heath. I must rectify that.

    I grew up on the Heartsease Estate and spent a lot of my youth on Mousehold Heath during the 1980s and 90s.

      Around 1976, I worked at Nacanco (paint tins etc) for a few months which may have been in Cirrus Way. I lived off Earlham Rd then, so God knows how I got out there; prolly cycled it!!! 😧

    I used to go to Blyth Jex and in the winter we had to do cross country around Mousehold. It was brutal!!!

      I also had cross country across Mousehold, and I totally concur!

    My late mother wandered all over Mousehold Heath as a child during the first world war. I must get a bus from the city center to Mousehold Heath when I visit Norwich next just to see where my mother wandered as a child. My maternal grandparents lived in Esdale Street and then moved to Angel Road. Waterloo park butted on to the end of the Angel Road properties back garden. Waterloo park was in a much better condition in the 1950's than it was in 2016. I am afraid that this is down to the Norwich council.

      There has been great improvement at Waterloo Park. They now have the Friends of Waterloo Park who work tirelessly to maintain the flower beds and run regular crafting sessions above the cafe. It's very popular and given life to the Park. You should visit!

    It's quite 'funny' not in a giggly way, to see how history, checking previous facts and files, illustrates the past so well. When I visit ( well prior to Covid that was) New Zealand and the towns and cities I've lived in, the changes are so vast. I check my photos from maybe 18 months before and see so much has changed. Having the technology we have today, can be of great value preserving the past and have it as a blue print for future generations. How we are now- and how 'they' were then. Love these videos. Awesome treasures. 🍷🇳🇿🙋‍♀️🇳🇱

      That's a great comment, thank you Anita. Since I've been doing these videos it's become clear how much has changed in such a short time. I sometimes think my videos look through "rose coloured glasses", so I plan to do one that shows some negative changes too. I'll handle that one very carefully!

    My grandad told me that back in the 40s men would gamble up there, because it was illegal to gamble at the time. They would pay my grandad, then, a young boy to keep look out for the old bill.

    Another masterpiece! Where the PoW camp was on Heartsease Lane, some friends and I used to sneak in there in the early 70s as a few derelict buildings remained. All demolished when the Council turned the area into a pitch and putt course in the mid 70s. Happy times!

      I too had no idea about the POW camp. When you used to go there, Kevin, was there much to see? Was there anything that would identify what it was built for?

    • @kevintracey4644
      @kevintracey4644 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@hetaera3418 There is nothing to see now but I remember how it was back in the mid-70s before the pitch and putt course was built. There was only one tall building left near heartsease lane. It was partly ruined. It was red brick. There are still foundations to be found near the golf course if you know where to look. There is something called Norfolk Historic Maps and on there it overlays different eras of maps including one overlay from 1946. You can clearly see the POW camp on there. I believe it contained German and at some point, Italian prisoners. I hope this helps.
