  • The research of the meaning of kata is usually known as Bunkai. Today, we'll look at various possibilities with one move from the Yansu kata.

Thank you for this sensei, and Mitch. Couldn't stay long today unfortunately but I was very happy to catch up later. Many karateka confuse bunkai for oyo and get lost in their own cleverness and choreography. My understanding is that applied karate is direct and to the point. The principle(s) involved being more important than the use of any particular technique. So when people speak of learning 'the' bunkai for a certain movement in a kata, they may be better served by gaining an understanding of the principles used to effect a useable technique. That way, you don't have to remember everything (technique and variation) you simply apply certain principles. Anyway, thanks again for today.

I love Yantsu. My sensei had me doing it over and over again in preparation for a tournament. It mixes ballistic movement with high tension (if you add ibuki breathing), making it excellent for conditioning. The bunkai are also so common sense, I love it.

I can't make the live feed anymore due to work schedule. However, rest assured Shihan I never miss an episode and I'm still giving my support through Patreon. I appreciate you going over this topic of Yanstu very much. I was thinking the same thing in reference to the first technique you covered, especially from the stand point of being grabbed by both wrist in a stand up clinching situation, but I was struggling on actually getting my hands free and clear on the outward extensions. I realized, by your demo, that I was going straight out to the side with both hands instead of what you showed, going out and forward with the hands. I also sometimes imagine the following stiff arm, prior to the punch, as a slap to the face area to distract or stun the attacker before punching him. Thanks for everything sir and keep up the great work. Osu!

A slap works too! I prefer the stiff arm or even a stiff throat grab, driving in to break their balance.

I may have been the first to do Yantsu kata in a BKK Tourny in the late 70's . Shihan Jeff Whybrow asked why I did it and I said i am only out there for about 30/40 seconds and not his 2 min Kanku. .lol 😂🤣

Thanks for this explanation! All these bunkai videos really help me to understand and develop my kyokushin practice! I do have a question:
The way I have been taught this part of Yantsu is to retract the last nukite into the hikite position, then form two fists, go up and then the open (nukite) hands to the side, as you did. I was wondering whether the forming of the two fists is just a (minor) variation or is there a different type of application/explanation when doing this?
Thanks a lot (for all your videos)!
    Osu!

Forming the fists as you withdraw can help to loosen a tight grip but they can also make it hard to rotate your own fists too. I didn't include that variation I am sorry, but I'll experiment with it. Osu.

Thanks for your answer, Shihan! No need to apologize 😊. There are only so much techniques to include in a video. Infinite possibilities to learn and discover. The beauty of karate! Osu!
