We often have a tendency to judge ourselves far more harshly than others judge us. You look great!

I was thinking this same thing.
You've said it so nicely. ❤
I'm very sure her entire face is still healing. So changes should still be expected.
I'm more concerned with Shelby's perfection issues?
At least it's starting to seem like she's having issues with expectations of perfection, or maybe it's just instant gratification?
      Maybe I'm wrong.
Struggling is difficult no matter what the root causes are.
Maybe it would be a good idea to find a professional to talk to, and learn how to let go of some of these worries.
I'm not judging you Shelby, really I'm not.
I just don't sugar coat things.
I'm simply seeing patterns, and am concerned from one human to another. ❤
Please, take that a face value. ❤

@@gardengatesopen She is a beautiful person inside and out. I think sometimes people don't understand the scrutiny people are under by being on youtube and her channels are huge - I cannot imagine it with that large of a channel. Sometimes people leave such insanely terrible comments Other than that, I agree that we are always our own worst critic. I am the same way. Hope it gets better. I think these things can really take a long time to heal. Sometimes doctors say it will take 6 months and it can take way, way longer. I had a foot surgery (obviously completely different) years ago and it was supposed to heal within a few months and it took well over a year.

Shelby, you need to practice self love! I know that’s much easier said then done but honestly, your nose has never stood out to me (and I’m sure that’s the case for most people). Changes can always be difficult and that’s okay, you might just need some time to adjust. You look great and you’re out here achieving more than most of your subscribers! We look up to you and find you an inspiration. At the end of the day, it’s your face and you can do whatever you’d like but from the bottom of my heart, I really don’t think you need to worry. You look great after surgery ❤️

Okay so as someone who has had your jaw surgery in the past, I completely relate to feeling like your face doesn't look "normal". For me it wasn't my nose but my chin, but like you, I didn't have feeling there for ages, and it was just kind of puffy looking. And people would tell me it didn't look that different, but I felt like it looked different and it made me pretty upset. It really did eventually go away, but it took a little over a year for me to feel like I was totally normal again. I think it's just when it's your face and you don't have partial feeling in a body part, you're always kind of aware of it. I don't think your nose looks weird or bad at all, but I completely understand why you're upset, and I don't think it's ridiculous or vain. You have to stare at your face so much for videos; I get why it would bother you. Anyways, I hope you feel better! Everyone in the comments section is rooting for you :)

I think this is common for many surgeries. I didn't have this surgery but I had abdominal surgery to repair diastatis recti (separated abs) and I was so swollen for nearly a year and even 4 years later the skin/muscles don't have the same sensitivity. Once you start getting your body cut into it's never quite the same.

I had my jaw removed and replaced 3 weeks before you got your surgery done. We’ve been healing at relatively the same pace so I understand where you come from. I haven’t felt 100 back to normal and still feel insecure about my appearance but just know you are not alone! It’s okay to go through the motions and honestly everyone’s experience is different.

I had jaw surgery about 8 years ago. And it took a long time to really recognize and reconcile my new face vs old. I still am completely numb in my chin. I honestly almost never think about it anymore you really do get used to the numb stiffness. If I were you, feeling the way you feel, and doing the kind of work you do, I’d wait six months and if you still feel the same way about your nose, see a surgeon and get it 100% the way you want it. It is totally worth it, not at all silly, and could have such a big impact on your mental health. Also maybe find a therapist and chat with them about it. It can be so helpful to process. Just my two cents!!

I learned this a few years back. When you're 20 you think everyone is thinking about you. Then at 40 you don't give a dam what others are thinking about you. And at 60 you finally realize that no one has been thinking about you at all because they are to busy thinking about themselves. You look great and just keep telling yourself that. When I was 14 I was in an accident that left a huge scar on my chin and it took a few years to completely forget that I have the scar on my face. Now I never notice it and nobody ever says anything about it. Your new look becomes you and you look great!

I was born with a cleft palate and had 7 surgeries between 6 months to 20 years old to correct it. I know how it feels to hate your face and cried looking at my nose many times because of swelling. Our face can take YEARS to heal. I can even see a difference from my healing from 22 to 24 years old. Trust the process and don’t compare yourself to others. Healing takes time 🤍

As someone who has also had surgery that changed my face (temporarily), I can relate to how you are feeling. It’s perfectly normal and valid, as so much of our identity is how our faces look. Keep reminding yourself that you had MAJOR surgery! It’s not unexpected that your body will still be adjusting after 6 months. The Invisalign will also likely be a frustrating process for you - having work done on my teeth was the worst. But I feel much more confident now that I have better dental health and my teeth look better. In another year, you’ll feel much better about the situation. Hang in there for now, and enjoy your youth!

It’s not superficial at all to feel stuck in a different body and especially a body you don’t love. I understand. 3 years ago I developed a chronic pain and fatigue condition and let me tell you the HARDEST part was feeling like my body was against me. Not a safe place for my soul anymore. And it sucks. So I just want to send love your way and tell you that it’s okay to feel this way and it’s not petty or superficial or materialistic at all. I’m really sorry that you don’t like how your face has changed. I have a friend that went through jaw surgery and she felt the exact same way. Her nose changed and she had a hard time adjusting as well.
It’s ok to feel like this and to be sad. It’s your face - you have to look at it everyday so what’s most important is that you like it. However you get there is personal to you. People don’t understand that having a constant source of anything, whether that’s pain, regret, etc is so difficult!
I feel for you. Wishing you the best on your healing/adjustment process, Shelby 💕

Thank you for being so open and vulnerable, I think a lot of people can relate to feeling ugly. I can! Having to be on zoom meetings daily, I see myself every day and think, eek I could use some work. But I tell myself that I am pretty and this is how I look. thank you for sharing your struggles, it is comforting knowing that we are not alone. Zoom is literally the WORST! I had such struggles getting used to it especially because I started getting acne again from wearing my mask so every time I had to get on Zoom, I also had to cover my acne. I started to just do my makeup and that surprisingly helped me feel better overall. Now that my skin has settled down I have reduced the amount of makeup I wear each day but what made me sad was feeling like I needed to put makeup on just to feel human. I've never before in my life felt that way.

I know the feeling, your nose changes your entire face. I hated mine my whole life until I finally got a nose job when I was 22 and have never been self conscious about it again. Not saying surgery is the answer but I know how frustrating and depressing self hatred can feel and not wanting to ever take pictures. Shelby! Allow yourself to be sad and upset. You are experiencing a shift in your life. Just because six months have passed by you don’t have to be over this and happy with your face. Really let your body release your feelings, give yourself grace. We all know we are our toughest critics, and it’s hard to face what’s worrying us. And then it’s okay if the thought comes back even after you’ve let everything out. Honestly feel these feelings.

Dear Shelby, you look beautiful just the way you are. As a potential jaw surgery patient, your vlogs helped me to understand the surgery process more realistic and i can't thank you enough for that. Thank you for showing your emotions and thoughts without filter and fear. I watched lots of jaw surgery videos and i still think that you are swollen. I heard that the recorvery process could even take 2 years. So 6 months is nothing. You still have a journey ahead of you and you are rocking it! Even if your nose stays like this(tbh i don't think there is anything wrong with your nose) you would still have options to change it if it affects you mentally.

I hope you start to feel better. I really think between the changes in your face and the renovation you're STRUGGLING and I just want you to know we hear you. I did a major renovation on my bathroom - JUST THE BATHROOM - in my house that was complete over a year ago and I STILL stress about it. Your stress over the house is totally normal I can't even imagine with the scope of your project . As for your nose, I feel like since it doesn't feel right it IS still healing/swollen. I hate that you're struggling. I highly suggest chatting with somebody (a therapist) if you don't already because these feelings you're having can possibly be managed with an outside perspective. Sending you love!!

Your nose looks fine but if you don’t end up liking the end result - don’t torture yourself and just get it fixed with surgery. You are the only one that matters when it comes to opinions about your own face so do what is best for you - even if that ends up being surgery.

Shelby, thanks for being so honest about what you're dealing with after the jaw surgery. You are such a sweet, intelligent and hard-working person. I hope it will continue to heal and the swelling will go down. But, if it were me (you probably already have done this) I would talk to my doctor about it. If it ends up bothering you excessively down the road, you may want to do something about it. You need to do what's right for you. I think it sounds like it's still healing, based on what you said. And, even if it's been 6 months, it was a major surgery and I think it could definitely take way longer to go back to normal. Hope the situation gets better. I think you are beautiful! 🤗

It’s perfectly valid to feel the way you feel💕Not because I think you look different, but because you feel that way ya know? I saw some comments like you need to practice self love etc which I think is a bit dismissive of how you’re actually feeling. It’s okay the have those thoughts if you have noticed a changed. I think you look beautiful and also I started following you after the jaw surgery so I have no idea really how you used to look. It is very hard when you personally notice a change. Thank you for being open and sharing how you’re feeling about it
Has the surgeon said anything in regards to your nose or it feeling numb? I wonder if nerves are being funky like you said it feels sort of numb. After I had my wisdom teeth removed, for a year my jaw would do this weird twitch. Maybe once the nerve settle down it will make your nose goes back to how it was? Like maybe the nerves are in sort of a frozen state right now and they’ll relax in a while.
I’m so sorry you’re dealing with that and we as humans definitely judge ourselves more than others actually do. I think you’re stunning but that doesn’t mean your feelings aren’t valid. Maybe jot down ideas to help remedy it like maybe reach back out to the surgeon or doctor? Also maybe trying to manifest or meditate on it. Maybe a naturopath to help give ideas of what supplements or vitamins help with healing nerves in case it is related to that?

Hey Shelby, I had my jaw surgery 6 weeks ago and watching your videos helped me alot. I don't feel alone with my troubles and I'm sure that you are helping many people out there. People tell me that I look good and they see nothing wrong and it can be upsetting sometimes because it feels like nobody understands me (even though they mean it and they are trying to be supportive).
I do see that your nose shape has changed after the surgery, I don't think it looks bad, but I understand how you feel because we are all extra harsh on ourselves and I will also feel bad if I had gone through the same change as you did. I am thinking of having a cosmetic surgery after the swelling goes down to fix the parts I don't like, because as much as positive thinking is good, I look into my face everyday and it's important that I like it. Our problems are something that can be easily fixed with a cosmetic surgery, if you can find some relief in that. Also if your nose still feels weird & stiff, there is a possibility that it is still the swelling, since it can stay for 1 year. I hope you feel better :)

I had the same jaw surgery you did, and it took over a year for my swelling to fully go down and for me to feel good about how I looked. It's such a long process. A lot of what you don't like is swelling, and you will see such a huge difference at the one year mark (same with the numbness...the swelling in your nose will go down too). I didn't even realize how swollen I still was at six months until I looked back at pictures. My face changed SO much after the first year. I promise you will feel confident again. I know what you are experiencing, and it's so tough. You are absolutely stunning, but I know that doesn't help because you're the one that sees the changes and things you don't like. But just know you are beautiful! And you will feel that again once you are fully healed. Sending you so much love! :)

Shelby I had a year when my husband worked in another city which was a four hour drive away and I used to drive there every weekend to see him (I had a 3 day weekend at the time so it made more sense for me to go). I found that the secret to making the long drive go buy was listening to mysteries and thrillers. Those kind of stories are written to keep you 'turning the page' so I'd be happy to do my extremely boring 4 hour drive each way just to listen to them. Get Audible to sponsor you and try it!

I think therapy would help you process your feelings healthily. They're strong emotions and hard to sort through on your own. I suggest it, because it could take years for you to feel okay again but with therapy that time could be a fraction of that. I wish I would have gone earlier. Grieving is very important, so don't feel bad for crying. If you don't now, you will later in life, whether it's about the surgery or just pent up emotion and trauma, it will resurface throughout your life if you don't fully feel your feelings, so continue to cry and talk about it as long as you want to. If you really wanted to, there is a solution. You could get a nose job if you really wanted to and no one would judge you. Not saying you need one at all, but just saying it is an option so keep that in mind. There is a solution to your problem so don't feel like your face is permanently "weird" looking, if that helps with anxiety at all. Knowing there's a solution to the problem sometimes helps

I've honestly followed you because of your surgery and because of you struggling with liking how you look. You continue to inspire me to have it done and your real honest feelings help me to know im going to be ok and I will have support. I have read it could take up to 2 years. 6 months down so good for you sis. Hang in there. You were beautiful before you are beautiful now. I do not want you to regret getting it done and everything over time will be better. You are so loved. Again I appreciate your honesty

your face is with you every day. you are not superficial whatsoever venting about it. like the comments say, you are as cute as can be! it also sounds like a lot of people who've had the surgery have commented here that it took a year to start being satisfied. i know that's a long time, but i hope their stories bring you comfort.

You're definitely still are healing. It can take a lot longer to heal when it's your face. Also, to me, you lost weight (makes sense since you couldn't chew for a few months), and that's made your face look thinner. Your facial features like your eyes look a lot bigger and deeper than before, which is kind of a perk

Hey Shelby! I know you’re about 1.5 yrs post-op these days but I’m coming up on 6 months in my own recovery. Watching your videos has really helped me and I wanted to say thank you! It’s hard for other people to understand what it’s like because on the outside you look totally normal but on the inside everything feels so different. Personally, I’m struggling to process that right now. I desperately want to feel like “myself” again. I’ve still got numbness on my chin, my bottom lip, and almost no feeling in gums and on the roof of my mouth. Some days my jaw feels really stiff or sore and that just wears you down. I hope you’re feeling more like yourself now, I know I’m looking forward to that for myself one day.

about 5 years ago, i broke my jaw in a bad car accident and had to undergo jaw surgery as well. i’ll be honest, the swelling after the surgery lasted a while. my face looks completely different and i actually have a dimple on my left cheek that appeared after my surgery. i know how you feel when you say your face looks different.. but you must remember you are gorgeous no matter what. i still look in the mirror and see my face as different, but it is also still beautiful despite the surgery. though it’s not what’s on the outside that matters, but what is on the inside! keep smiling and stay strong lovely! 💗

Oh Shelby. I’m so so sorry for how you feel. It’s not shallow or unimportant. I have HORRIBLE teeth. Just awful and it has haunted me my entire life because people equate caring for oneself with good teeth which is 100% not the case as I take better care of my teeth than most. There’s not a day where I don’t think someone is staring at my teeth. That kind of focus on something we are insecure about plays a massive impact on our mental health. It’s totally understandable what you are dealing with. If it helps, Lauryn Bosstick had a jaw surgery years ago and she still struggles with swelling and feeling like a stranger in her body. BUT she has shared a lot of things that helped her heal and cut the swelling down. Maybe you can search up her blog and find some information to help you feel better? Again, so sorry. Thank you for being vulnerable and sharing. You are beautiful, inside and out.

If you would have had a car crash and ended up with the nose like this, you would have accepted it a long time ago and had moved on.
It doesn't look as good as before, and it might never go back to the way it was, but life goes on and you're still lucky to have a very beautiful face.

  • @Sarah.lux.

I'm sorry the recovery is being so hard for you, Shelby. I hope you overcome this and find your beauty again. But may I thank you for publishing your experience honestly? Many people go into surgery with unrealistic expectations, unprepared for how this can effect their self-image. Sharing your experience is important and as part of your audience I am grateful for your approach on this topic. I think you're beautiful, but I absolutely understand that seeing yourself and agreeing with that can take time. Some people will see beauty in us, even when we don't see it ourselves. I don't think talking about self-image is vanity, if it effects your well-being and mental health it's not just an aesthetic matter. Your emotional pain is real and valid. I hope you find healing and come to terms with your face and yourself. Hugs from Germany.

When I had hernia surgery in 2006 doctors were like most common surgery no big deal but I've been in pain and never felt the same since. The surgeon told me my hernia repair was fine and didn't understand why I was in pain. After years of physical therapy I'm doing very good now. You seem like an open person so one way or another I think you will find a way to be happy with your appearance.
You have really good taste with your hair, hair color, brows, makeup, clothes, and you're always learning and getting better.
You're always such a positive person so it's very brave of you to talk about something so personal publicly. Don't read your comments when you're down because toxic comments will hurt even though they're ridiculous from hurt people

you're beautiful! I can't imagine how hard it must be to be going through this whole thing online. and with a twin sister with seemingly no issue in the jaw department. that really can't be easy. just know, you're beautiful inside and out, and this season of feeling down will eventually pass. just stay aware and if you start to have any thoughts that you don't recognize yourself anymore, please do not hesitate to talk to a therapist about BDD. you are VALID and NORMAL. we love you!

Took me 2-3 years to not be regularly upset about my face. My nose changed too and I hate it (still). Eventually you just can’t give anymore energy to the feelings and you start to move on. Not because you want to but because you have to. I still don’t like photos or videos. I don’t really have many pictures together with my son and the thought of that upsets me but I also find being in front of the camera really triggering so I avoid it whenever possible. I really feel for you and the emotional struggle you are going through. I can 100% relate 🤍

Looking at you from the side of your face ( profile ), I do see the difference. I can't see the overbite issue, you had anymore. I personally think you are so beautiful. Loved how you looked with the tan you got the other day. I love your usual everyday routine. The jog. The to do list that you make yourself, everyday. Thats something, I have put into practice in my own life. You are so hard working and your not afraid to tackle projects. You just go for it. Like the primering and painting of the cieling in your Palm Springs house and putting together the desk. I love that you talk about the stock market and you school us on it. You are so beautiful and so inspirational. You have so much to offer!

I would never invalidate very real feelings after major surgery (and the start of Invisalign), but I will say you look beautiful. You have come so far in your healing process (and to me looked quite pretty all along). AND I see continuous healing and decrease in swelling (edema). I also believe that even for a full year, and sometimes more, after (major) surgery there can be changes and decreases in swelling. You are doing all the right things, and I would still say give it a little more time. As a nurse I will definitely say it can take awhile after surgery to get back to yourself. You have had one heck of six month period between surgery, moving to a new house, buying and renovating a house, plus COVID and everything else that is going on in the world.

Hi Shelby, I got my DJS last July and unfortunately I am in the exact same place as you mentally. It’s super hard to talk about with anyone because I am so hard on myself about sounding superficial, but at the same time my face was a huge part of my identity and having it change, especially in a way that you don’t like (for me its my nose and like upper lip area if that makes sense), is so hard and isolating. I hope that this comment doesn’t bring you down, but instead makes you feel less alone, because watching this video felt like the most validating thing I’ve heard since the surgery. I’m here for you if you ever want to reach out! Sending love

Yes, your nose is a bit different now because they have to push back inward. If you still feel unhappy about your nose, get rhinoplasty. I wanted to that when I was your age because I also feel my nose is too big, but I come to terms with it now. I am an old lady and I still feel unhappy about it sometimes. Find it in yourself if you really want the nose job then go for it, and when you make that decision, try your best come to terms with it.
