"No," Churchill says, "I heard a new political joke about myself this morning. I collect all jokes about myself. I already have over 100 in this notebook." "How funny," Stalin says. "I collect all jokes about myself too." "Oh, really?" Churchill says. "So how many have you got?" "Three prison camps so far."

Their politics are still inhumane.

Thanks for this fascinating video. Today, on what is Memorial Day in the USA, as we honor our fighting men and women for all time, including my maternal grandfather who fell as a GI in Italy and my paternal grandfather who survived fighter under the waves as a cook/steward of the Silent Service in the Pacific, I am filled with utter and happy satisfaction that Sir Winston Churchill had the opportunity to walk around Hitler’s death bunker and poke his cane among the ashes of Hitler’s cremation ditch. Churchill gave the site all due consideration before abruptly turning away and walking off, which was not much. Perfect!

But he was only the figurehead and spokesman of a government that was made up of the best members of all parties who agreed to put political differences aside to fight the war. The sort of image of Churchill standing alone with the British people arrayed behind him in defiance was very much promulgated after the war as the Churchill publicity machine cranked into action, much like Robert Falcon Scott's did a generation earlier, and Churchill was a brilliant self-publicist in his history of the war. That's not to downplay his contributions but there was an entire government, civil service and military organisation behind him and he would have been well briefed by staff before conferences.

A nice bit of immediate post-war Churchill footage and news from the ever tenacious Dr Felton. Thanks again for the research and accuracy that we have all learned to trust and respect from you Mark!
This was great Mr Felton! You did a great Churchill impression as well, I’ve gotten more information about Hitlers bunker from your videos that any history books I’ve seen
Churchill may have shown a measured and collected approach to his Berlin visit, but he also is known for having a brilliant sense of humour and his legendary razor sharp wit. In the 1950s one morning, Churchill's woken to be told: "I'm afraid there's been a bit of a scandal, Prime Minister, one of our back-bench MP's was found with a guardsman in St. James' Park in the bushes last night by the police and the papers have got a hold of it". Churchill replied (in his usual deep, gruff voice),.. "Last night?!" "Yes" "Very cold last night, wasn't it?" "Yes Sir, I believe it was one of the coldest February night's in 30 years!" "Makes you proud to be British!"
That reminds me of another Churchill anecdote. Upon being informed that Rudolf Hess had flown to Scotland, in the hope of Germany making a separate peace with Great Britain, Churchill ( who was on his way to the movies, or cinema) said, "Well, Hess or no Hess, I'm going to see the Marx Brothers!"
@@billwebb9643Now that you mention that, I have seen footage of a test structure that they built in preparation for that insanely big arena Hitler had planned.
having read somewhere, years ago that when he sat in Hitlers' chair Churchill said "I have tracked the nazi beast to his lair"; I was waiting eagerly for Mark to repeat that proclamation. Such is my regard for his historical accuracy that because he didn't include it I must now regard that quote as apocryphal.
Churchill has to be one the most under- celebrated people in history , for a man that lead a country from dark days to victory , he certainly got thrown on the heap in a hurry by the empire , a true hero in my mind
Thank you for another great video. I think that Churchill was so sober during the visit to the bunker because he had seen so much of the destruction and death caused by war throughout much of his adult life.
Everytime mark makes a video I’m almost always surprised. I would have never thought that any western Allied leaders would have visited hitlers bunker. Keep up the good work mark!
This is one of your very best breakdowns Mark Felton of what the political leadership was doing after the war concluded. Thank you for keeping history alive.
Yes, did you know he was an art forger and also made money by digesting books and writing short synopsis of them for readers digest. He also left London whenever he knew the luftwaffe was coming, unlike Hitler who insisted on staying in Berlin
@Gmac86 Have you ever met a conspiracy theory you didn't like? "What precautions did Churchill take to stay out of harm’s way during dangerous situations? He didn’t take many. There are a lot of cases when an air raid was about to occur and Churchill would go to the roof and watch. This was how he was. He was not going to cower in a shelter during a raid. He wanted to see it. By day, he carried on as if there were no nightly air raids. This was part of his style, part of how he encouraged and emboldened the nation. If Churchill’s doing this, if he’s courageous enough, maybe we really don’t have so much to fear."
From India's perspective Churchill was not a good man. He never wanted India to be a free nation , was responsible for Bengal famine, and death of thousands of people. He even uttered derogatory remarks against Indians and India. Now see India is a biggest thriving democracy in the world.
What a wonderful anecdote to history. Amazed I had never heard of this visit before. Goes to show how much the History Channel missed out on in its heyday.
Because with the possible exception of The World at War, Mark Felton's productions beat any other media offerings on the Second World War by a comfortable margin.
I had to look it up on a biography of Truman; he was waiting for A-Bomb tests results(successful or not successful) and didn’t get them until the evening of July 16th. Coupled with the fact he’d only been on the job a month, I think his mind was focused on something else.
I have never understood the British criticism of Churchill. As an American I would think he was celebrated as a hero and Knighted. Hell they made Elton John a Knight. Same thing can be said for Christian Craighead. Its like the British don't like hero's.
He parceled off Britain's colonial holdings for pennies on the dollar to FDR (who hated the British empire), and turned the UK into, essentially, a vassal of the United States. The British were nearly bankrupt as a result of involving themselves in another European conflict to "save Poland" which was handed to the Soviets after the war anyway. The British continued with a war economy (including food rationing) for another decade after the war ended. I would have voted him out too.
@@asahelnettleton9044 Britain's colonial holdings were stolen from their rightful owners, and were not Britain's to be sold. Much of the U.K.'s wealth today is a result of those centuries of enslavement, r a p e and pillage.
War criminals who blended among women and children and old people in the same vein as the Taliban or Iraqi insurgents, murdering unsuspecting soldiers and officers, sabotage operations, in unidentifiable civilian clothes.
Cant believe to this day how the British public turned their back on churchill in the general election, if it wasn't for him they'd have being speaking German, great video mark.
A good wartime PM never makes for a good peacetime PM. Clement Attlee radically changed Britain for the better and has been the top rated PM time and time again.
I've always admired Churchill. He was extremely adventurous and witnessed extreme changes in the world he started out in compared to the world he left. He participated in the cavalry charge at the battle of Omdurman, was taken prisoner in the war against the Boers, and witnessed a shootout in London between the police and some Latvian anarchists just to name a few things.
I wonder if one of the battle ribbons Churchill wore was for the Black and Tans he sent into Ireland to suppress any form of home rule. "Allowing a nation across the Irish Sea to become a republic was akin to offering a country up to a miserable gang of human leopards in West Africa.” - Winston Churchill in a speech about Irish home rule.

Thank you for this report on PM Churchill visit. Excellent as usual.
I always learn something from a Felton video! Cheers, Mark!
Simply WOW!
Thank you Mark Felton.
Like your impersonation of Winnie Mark😊 plus I’ve never seen that footage before! Cheers 🏴🇬🇧
"Last night?!"
"Yes"
"Very cold last night, wasn't it?"
"Yes Sir, I believe it was one of the coldest February night's in 30 years!"
"Makes you proud to be British!"
And a diehard racist
That reminds me of another Churchill anecdote. Upon being informed that Rudolf Hess had flown to Scotland, in the hope of Germany making a separate peace with Great Britain, Churchill ( who was on his way to the movies, or cinema) said, "Well, Hess or no Hess, I'm going to see the Marx Brothers!"
@@arbjful no such thing as racism it i a word designed to swindle people or shame them into compliance.
@@valerietaylor9615 Churchill had been bribed to destroy Europe and the British Empire by Strakosch.
that generation!
I always learn something I never heard of before from you Dr. Felton such as the fact that Berlin has a high water table. The best WWII channel.
Apparently most of the grandiose structures Hitler wanted Speer to build after the victory would not in fact have been supported by Berlin's wet soil.
@@billwebb9643Now that you mention that, I have seen footage of a test structure that they built in preparation for that insanely big arena Hitler had planned.
These are incredible moments recorded and reported by a great Historian. As usual great work Felton.
having read somewhere, years ago that when he sat in Hitlers' chair Churchill said "I have tracked the nazi beast to his lair"; I was waiting eagerly for Mark to repeat that proclamation. Such is my regard for his historical accuracy that because he didn't include it I must now regard that quote as apocryphal.
Very appropriate as today is Memorial Day in the USA. Thanks Doc!
Wonderful episode! Thank you so much for such enlightenment of WW2 events! Cheers!
Thanks for your work. Always sets me up for a great day after one of your videos.🎉
Very nice video. It is very interesting to hear about the things that would happen in the final months of wars. Thank you for the video
Enjoyed Dr. Felton dropping his voice to pretend it was Churchill's voice. Added entertainment to a very informative video. Well done!
Dr Felton…we need a video on Alfred jodl and Keitel
Churchill's life story is extraordinary to say the least.
Yes, did you know he was an art forger and also made money by digesting books and writing short synopsis of them for readers digest. He also left London whenever he knew the luftwaffe was coming, unlike Hitler who insisted on staying in Berlin
Churchill was a traitor.
@Gmac86
Have you ever met a conspiracy theory you didn't like?
"What precautions did Churchill take to stay out of harm’s way during dangerous situations?
He didn’t take many. There are a lot of cases when an air raid was about to occur and Churchill would go to the roof and watch. This was how he was. He was not going to cower in a shelter during a raid. He wanted to see it. By day, he carried on as if there were no nightly air raids. This was part of his style, part of how he encouraged and emboldened the nation. If Churchill’s doing this, if he’s courageous enough, maybe we really don’t have so much to fear."
@@terri6854 Churchill began civilian bombing.
From India's perspective Churchill was not a good man. He never wanted India to be a free nation , was responsible for Bengal famine, and death of thousands of people.
He even uttered derogatory remarks against Indians and India. Now see India is a biggest thriving democracy in the world.
Another great video Dr Felton! Thank you.
Mark Felton never fails to tell us a fascinating story. I’ve watched every single video and get excited as soon as an upload comes through! 😎
Mark, I loved the Winston Churchill impression you used to read his quoted diary exerpts 👍. Great video, as usual. Thank you for sharing!
From Dunkirk evacuation operations to the tour ruins of Berlin Churchill must be Britain’s most badass PM of WW2.
Always a good day when I see one of your videos drop good sir!

Excellent presentation as always, Mark. Many thanks.
What a wonderful anecdote to history. Amazed I had never heard of this visit before. Goes to show how much the History Channel missed out on in its heyday.
Excellent, I wasn't aware that Churchill visited Hitler's bunker. Really fascinating. Thanks, Mark for another great video
Privileged aristocratic untouchable lords😂😂😂😂
I'm almost 82. How come I've never seen this before?
Because with the possible exception of The World at War, Mark Felton's productions beat any other media offerings on the Second World War by a comfortable margin.
Dr. Felton, as Prime Minister Churchill, can't get any better than that!😅😊
6:27 nice impersonation 😽
Best historical channel on youtube!
Truman unimpressed with the sites.
I really wonder how different the impression would had been if it had been FDR?
Roosevelt was far more interested in this type of event.
I had to look it up on a biography of Truman; he was waiting for A-Bomb tests results(successful or not successful) and didn’t get them until the evening of July 16th. Coupled with the fact he’d only been on the job a month, I think his mind was focused on something else.
What a great Churchill impression!
Definitely.
Nice Churchill impersonation! 🇬🇧
Too good of a pronounciation. I got every word
Churchill was a traitor 👍

@@ziepex7009ok,you mind explaining?
An absolutely fascinating way of informing us with descriptions/narration perfectly accompanying the old films. thanks.
One of your finest videos Dr. Felton, thank you!
You should do more series about yugoslavian partisans during ww2.
War criminals who blended among women and children and old people in the same vein as the Taliban or Iraqi insurgents, murdering unsuspecting soldiers and officers, sabotage operations, in unidentifiable civilian clothes.
6:13 - Your impression of Churchill's voice is hilarious 🤣
Cant believe to this day how the British public turned their back on churchill in the general election, if it wasn't for him they'd have being speaking German, great video mark.
A good wartime PM never makes for a good peacetime PM. Clement Attlee radically changed Britain for the better and has been the top rated PM time and time again.
Videos like this need to be shown in all UK schools.
The chair Churchill sat on looked too rickety to support a fly.
Oh my goodness, here you go! I just watched one of your videos but forgot the name of the video and the channel. However, the background music keeps playing in my mind every single day. I tried searching for it extensively, even looking up Hitler videos, but it was all in vain. Suddenly, your video popped up, and when I clicked on it, I realized it was yours. Here you go, the music-absolutely fabulous! All the very best!
