Actually, this off-duty cop reacted very well. By lying in the dentist chair, he couldn't know how many assailants were there, and definitely not how they were armed.
I'm no expert, but the defender needs to know how many perps and there is no adequate back stop if he started firing. there are just too many people in a closed space and the bullet doesn't care who it hits. Great job on the part of the defender, in my opinion.
He knows that he can get one of the robbers disarmed at least thats why he did that. If he pulled the gun right away they might've taken a hostage which would definitely complicate things

This is the first time I’ve really disagreed with John. I think the reason the victim chose not to draw is that his back was turned, there were multiple offenders, and he was unable to immediately determine who was a threat and who was a victim. We have the advantage of the multiple camera angles to help us determine earlier than the victim who the attackers were.

with guys with big knives, I would have thought he would fire off a few rounds immediately to take out the first offender so he could get to the next offender. An individual successfully disarming two armed robbers without shooting either one of them is absolutely unheard of, the bottom line is it would have been nearly impossible without the firearm still as it was proven to be an integral part of taking out the first assailant even though he did not have to shoot him it took all of the intention right out of the first robber which gave him the time and the space to deal with the second guy. I've already been robbed 4 times. Called police 3 times and went directly into 2 of their battalions on the 4rd robbery. On the 3 phone calls they clowned me and one of the two battalions I talked with clowned me as well. Luckily the second one was a ROTAM battalion and they managed to get my stuff back. After that I started to pack a piece with me, at 17 I had a taurus 92 on me because I was getting robbed too many times.
A lot of people would of started letting off shots quite early but that could of resulted in a lot of innocent bystander harm especially with those cheap drywall walls. BIG respect to him for initiating contact hand to hand first and letting people scatter before he drew the firearm. Your lessons on situational awareness saved me two days ago. Monday I was at one of my stops. The entrance to this stop is on a less used street, and I’m there at or before 6am. I carry, and I’m always watching my surroundings especially in the city. I go to unload my truck and a guy sees me across the street, he crosses straight for me. I got a huge red flag and jumped up immediately into my truck and behind some of my cans for cover, I readied my firearm (he couldn’t see it from his angle as it’s a higher box truck) and guy crossed, and went on his way. Nothing happened, thank God. Was it a robbery or other dangerous situation? I don’t know for certain. But there was no reason for him to cross there and approach me, and no one else was around. Keep your eyes up people, just in case!

This cop somehow disarmed two people attacking him with knives, he's setting an unrealistically high level of performance expectation for the rest of cops. I can get on board with not shooting the first guy. It was a rather quick disarm and the cop had a vantage point on the entry to the room. However not shooting the second guy as he rushed and continuing into a scuffle left him vulnerable to the first robber getting up and re-attacking. Especially since the cops back ended up being turned to the disarmed guy. Luckily once again it was a short scuffle and the first guy was no longer motivated. Major hats off to this guy. I only speak from the position of after the fact, seeing all angles, and not having been in the officers shoes. However if faced with multiple threats I think it be best to ensure you're dealing with one without the potential of another if possible. Stay safe, and carry

I agree. When he first got up he didn't have good situational awareness as to what's going down, so he played it cool. I think that he underestimated how vulnerable he was going to be on the floor, that the thief could get to him before he could react. He's lucky that they weren't killers. The knife was still by the side of the first guy while the defender was fighting with his back to the first guy.
It's so funny. I've spent soooo much time in Brazil and while their was definitely lots of crime, I NEVER felt in danger. Brazilians (overall) are wonderful people. I will say that it was weird on my first trip that my uber driver told me that "we don't stop at red lights after 9pm" It's essentially the norm in Brazil that police won't pull you over for traffic violations because they are too busy with more serious crimes lol

Exactly the reason I practice my draw from different and challenging positions. I also think the reason he didn't draw out his gun with his back towards them to take a shot is there was too many people jammed up in the fatal funnel it would have been easy for one of those muggers to push someone in front of them when they hear the shots ring out to escape causing the man to hit someone by mistake.

If he grabbed his gun, not knowing if the robbers were carrying guns, he could have set in motion a horrible gun fight. they could have started shooting immediately at him & everyone else in the way. He also could have had Novocain or whatever creating his sense to be slightly delayed as well. Actually, this off-duty cop reacted very well. By lying in the dentist chair, he couldn't know how many assailants were there, and definitely not how they were armed.

I'm no expert, but the defender needs to know how many perps and there is no adequate back stop if he started firing. there are just too many people in a closed space and the bullet doesn't care who it hits. Great job on the part of the defender, in my opinion.
He knows that he can get one of the robbers disarmed at least thats why he did that. If he pulled the gun right away they might've taken a hostage which would definitely complicate things
You know what’s ironic? I was just at the dentist within the month. There I was laying down getting a check up and I thought to myself, “do I really need to be carrying right now? Am I taking this whole thing too far?”

This is the first time I’ve really disagreed with John. I think the reason the victim chose not to draw is that his back was turned, there were multiple offenders, and he was unable to immediately determine who was a threat and who was a victim. We have the advantage of the multiple camera angles to help us determine earlier than the victim who the attackers were.

The gas station a mile down my house was robbed and the no weapons signs actually worked really well. The robber had a baseball bat, and obviously baseball bats aren’t weapons, they’re used for sporting purposes.
Unfortunately the gas station had already had a weapon in it, the cash register. Because when the robber finished emptying the register, he threw it at the attendee and gave her a broken collar bone.

with guys with big knives, I would have thought he would fire off a few rounds immediately to take out the first offender so he could get to the next offender. Speed IMHO was the essence but he's the one with the experience as an officer so kudos to him. And perps owe him a big thanks for not blowing a hole inside of them.
He seemed to have confidence in his grappling skills. Big guy with training. He subdued each in 2-3 sec so his self-assessment was spot on. It looks like he left gun holstered to leave both hands free.
And this is why I'm adamant that we shouldn't have cops that can't control a situation physically when possible.
An individual successfully disarming two armed robbers without shooting either one of them is absolutely unheard of, the bottom line is it would have been nearly impossible without the firearm still as it was proven to be an integral part of taking out the first assailant even though he did not have to shoot him it took all of the intention right out of the first robber which gave him the time and the space to deal with the second guy.

I've already been robbed 4 times. Called police 3 times and went directly into 2 of their battalions on the 4rd robbery. On the 3 phone calls they clowned me and one of the two battalions I talked with clowned me as well. Luckily the second one was a ROTAM battalion and they managed to get my stuff back. After that I started to pack a piece with me, at 17 I had a taurus 92 on me because I was getting robbed too many times.

The gun may have been unloaded, and that would likely be the only logical reason he didn't use it.
A lot of people would of started letting off shots quite early but that could of resulted in a lot of innocent bystander harm especially with those cheap drywall walls. BIG respect to him for initiating contact hand to hand first and letting people scatter before he drew the firearm. Your lessons on situational awareness saved me two days ago. Monday I was at one of my stops. The entrance to this stop is on a less used street, and I’m there at or before 6am. I carry, and I’m always watching my surroundings especially in the city. I go to unload my truck and a guy sees me across the street, he crosses straight for me. I got a huge red flag and jumped up immediately into my truck and behind some of my cans for cover, I readied my firearm (he couldn’t see it from his angle as it’s a higher box truck) and guy crossed, and went on his way. Nothing happened, thank God. Was it a robbery or other dangerous situation? I don’t know for certain. But there was no reason for him to cross there and approach me, and no one else was around. Keep your eyes up people, just in case!

This cop somehow disarmed two people attacking him with knives, he's setting an unrealistically high level of performance expectation for the rest of cops. I can get on board with not shooting the first guy. It was a rather quick disarm and the cop had a vantage point on the entry to the room. However not shooting the second guy as he rushed and continuing into a scuffle left him vulnerable to the first robber getting up and re-attacking. Especially since the cops back ended up being turned to the disarmed guy. Luckily once again it was a short scuffle and the first guy was no longer motivated.
Major hats off to this guy. I only speak from the position of after the fact, seeing all angles, and not having been in the officers shoes. However if faced with multiple threats I think it be best to ensure you're dealing with one without the potential of another if possible.

I agree. When he first got up he didn't have good situational awareness as to what's going down, so he played it cool. I think that he underestimated how vulnerable he was going to be on the floor, that the thief could get to him before he could react. He's lucky that they weren't killers. The knife was still by the side of the first guy while the defender was fighting with his back to the first guy.

It's so funny. I've spent soooo much time in Brazil and while their was definitely lots of crime, I NEVER felt in danger. Brazilians (overall) are wonderful people. I will say that it was weird on my first trip that my uber driver told me that "we don't stop at red lights after 9pm" It's essentially the norm in Brazil that police won't pull you over for traffic violations because they are too busy with more serious crimes lol
Yeah I'm Brazilian and crime has never been much of an issue for me, and for the traffic stuff, in Rio de Janeiro people really don't wait at red lights, but in São Paulo people stop even at 3am sometimes, and police loves giving tickets to everyone.

Exactly the reason I practice my draw from different and challenging positions. I also think the reason he didn't draw out his gun with his back towards them to take a shot is there was too many people jammed up in the fatal funnel it would have been easy for one of those muggers to push someone in front of them when they hear the shots ring out to escape causing the man to hit someone by mistake.

Great response by this off duty officer. Huge props to him. I think his intuition was spot on. He needed a moment to assess what the hell was going on & who was a criminal & who wasn’t.
If he grabbed his gun, not knowing if the robbers were carrying guns, he could have set in motion a horrible gun fight. they could have started shooting immediately at him & everyone else in the way. He also could have had Novocain or whatever creating his sense to be slightly delayed as well.
