- In this week’s episode of The Joel Klatt Show: Big Noon Conversations, FOX Sports’ lead college football analyst Joel Klatt is in Columbus to sit down with the Head Coach with the Ohio State Buckeyes, Ryan Day. The pair discuss how different Day’s job is now from the time he began as Head Coach. They also get into the larger issues facing the sport and how much the NFL should be used as a model for the college game. Coach Day discusses how the expanded playoff will affect top programs like Ohio State. He then gets into how frustrating the targeting rule has become and why common sense needs to be applied more in those situations. They wrap up with a list of coaches that he admires in the game.

May I say as a Michigan fan, Ryan is the best of us. Not just a good coach but a good man. I wish him the best, just not against us. We are blessed to have the rivalry back! And having this man a part of it, along with jim..oh boy this is gonna be fun for a long time. Stay healthy Ryan, and we will see you in the fall! Go blue, go bucks!

Well said. I’m a Buckeye fan that loves that the rivalry is back. Buckeye nation is a brutal fan base to play under. I agree Ryan Day is the best of us and despite the rhetoric, losing one regular season game is not grounds to get rid of anyone……no matter who it is

As a 50 + year Buckeye Fan - I appreciate you saying that. I've always admired and respected Nebraska's 'class' ! Tom Osbourne was 1 of my all time favorite - men - to coach. Bobby Bowden & Joe Paterno were a couple others I really admired. -- We are fortunate to have Ryan Day - in my opinion. He's a 1st time HC and will evolve and improve over time. His beginning as a HC was interrupted with the virus causing issues few others historically had to endure early in their careers. -- He is making the changes needed each year in a rational methodical & logical way. And as the entire country got to see in the Georgia game - he has us '''really''' close !!!

UM fan here... total respect for Day and what he's done: I know many people don't see it this way, but OSU could've won either of the last two years and it's been a long life losing to them: UM had some big plays last year but not sure they were the better team.
OSU is scary and could win it all this year. Fellow Wolverines might want to fight me for this take, but let's not act like the Buckeyes have disappeared.

First off, great interview. Ryan Day seems very approachable and understanding while articulate. Taking over an OSU program is hard, but following Urban Meyer... To say he hasn't been a great coach is simply ignorant. The expansion of the playoffs is here, and beating the TTUN is important, but titles get the blue chips and sustain a program.
I'm glad Joel Klatt is doing these interviews. I do think that with the 12-team playoff coming, the look of the immediate post regular season time needs to be revamped, even taking a hard look at the value of conference championship games. The February signing period worked for a long time, and in the college football of today and going forward, these programs can make that work effectively again. It terms of postseason status, the NCAA Division I men's basketball model is one that could be applied for college football. In basketball, there's the NCAA Tournament and the National Invitational Tournament. Similarly in football, there should be the College Football Playoff and the bowl games. Presently, the CFP semifinals ARE bowl games with the two winners advancing to the CFP Championship Game. In my recommendation, the bowl games would be more akin to the NIT in basketball.
Need more games like penn state vs auburn when expanding the 12 team playoffs love to see odd games like that

Less commercials in college and nfl. Games are to long and it breaks up the flow of the game for the fans and the teams. Love the way rugby and soccer just has a game timer. Beautiful way to watch the game. It would be great if the commercials were at the half and quarter breaks. Maybe the game would be a 1 1/2 hours maybe 2 with overtime.
If a conference like the Pac 12 did this for their streaming games could be a real advantage over linear broadcasts. Commercial frequency and length have nearly turned me off to sport.

It seems every Ohio State season comes to an inevitable bogus call relating to targeting that determines the outcome of our entire season and as a fan you just sit around all season stewing and noting gets resolved in that area. (See Sean Wade, Marvin Harrison, Joey Bosa)
They backed into the playoffs and one play in a 60 minute game isn't the difference maker.

I'm just saying you backed into the playoffs only because USC lost their conference championship game, a game OSU didn't earn the right to play in for the B1G. OSU got in by sitting at home. And it is a 60 minute game, if you're the better team 1 snap shouldn't make a difference in the outcome. Like when JT was short in 2016, it should have never came down to that. We lost the game because our offense didn't get 6 on our possession. OSU had an opportunity to win that game. That's the point.

As another Michigan fan I agree. Ohio State having a great, likeable coach that’s a great representative of the sport is unusual. He’s the complete opposite of Urban. The system only works in the NFL cause there is manufactured parity. The salary cap and draft system keeps things relatively even. College football can’t and won’t have those options.

@@PsarmsI mean he *reportedly* said that in 2020. And odds are his 2020 team would’ve put 70+ on that Michigan team that went like 2-4. It was a completely different team in 2021.
Klatt is right about the playoff overlap with the NFL. Many of the College playoffs could and should be late November, early December. As far as final exams go, the few late season playoff teams, should get an extension or something in regards to academic final exams, some kind of work around for those few. Or if final exams become a problem, end the regular season for all teams in October. Playoffs would be November only.

Very nice job, Joel. After two disappointing conversations with Deion and Saban, his last two with Sankey and now Ryan Day have been much better. This one is the best so far in my view, as Joel was much more proactive in the conversation than he was previously. I'd much rather see some real back and forth than just lobbing softballs and playing Yes-man.
I think some of its also on the coach Day seems more camera friendly than a saban. Didn’t see the Deion one though I’d think it should’ve be good

I just don’t understand how people don’t like Ryan Day.
He’s the first elite coach I’ve seen complain about play calls for an extended period of time. Not sure how I feel about it, will be interesting to see how it plays out.
It reeks of saltiness and Considering Harrison jr should’ve also been called for illegal touching and there was 12 men on the field on the fake punt Kirby smart timeout play that wasn’t called.
He needs to admit they got calls that went their way in the game as well. I bet if the play went the other way he wouldn’t be crying to Klatt about getting rid of slow motion replays.
He needs to just except it and move on, and quit acting like he never got an answer for why it wasn’t targeting…it was shoulder to shoulder contact.

Ryan Day is an offensive coordinator. Urban Meyer had OSU shaped into an SEC program and that’s why they dominated so long. Day has ignored his OL and defense essentially and Harbaugh has attacked those areas the last two years and especially with NFL defensive schemes. Kirby Smart was arrogant in his preparation for them. Had he studied Michigan then Georgia would have blown them out. Instead, he tried to match them score for score. Ultimately, it was OSU defensive scheme that allowed Georgia to score at will in the final minutes. It will cost them again this year too
Ignores Oline? He just has 3 guys drafted, including the first olineman taken in this draft. And had 2 rookie tackles starting in the NFL this past season lol. Also ran for 5 ypc (without top 2 RBs) and only gave up 1 sack vs your Michigan team. Just because he doesn't rely on the transfer portal every year like someone else, doesn't mean they aren't a priority

Two things. First. When asked about coaches, his lack of mentioning Jim Harbaugh, is deafening. I mean the guy that has kicked your a$$ two years in a row? LOL.
Second, this playoff will only work if there is a limit to how many teams per conference can make it. There should NOT be more than 2 or 3 teams per conference, or we'll soon see 6 SEC teams, 4 Big 10 teams, ND and Clemson. Every year.

If you run your finger up your shoulder you will find your neck and head area. I somehow can't figure out how a 6' tall man launched his body off the ground like Superman, after running full speed, and happened to only touch a 4 square inch area on another man's shoulder by shrinking himself. How do you knock someone unconscious, before they hit the ground, without striking the head and neck area? MHJ's arms went limp before he hit the ground because he couldn't even brace his fall.

Harbaugh is 2-1 and has a much better resume….Harbaugh has taken losing programs and turned them into winning programs, with 10-win seasons and conference championships, including on the NFL level. Ryan Day took an elite program backward.

@@ammielcoats9762 Harbaugh inherited a 5-7 team and (without the notorious homer call in ‘16) did enough to beat Ohio State in Columbus in his 2nd season, with far less talent; that’s great coaching. He’s had to deal with that talent gap during his tenure, and he was playing against a great coach, Urban Meyer. But, still with less talent, he’s managed to build a team designed to dismantle the Buckeyes. That’s great coaching.
More important, he’s 2-1 against Ryan Day, and Michigan is improving year over year whereas Ohio State is regressing. You needed USC losing even to appear in the playoff last year…and you played your best game against Georgia’s worst, and still lost.
All things being equal, Harbaugh will be 3-1 against Day this November…and play in another playoff game.
But don’t worry, the NCAA is making rivalries and conferences irrelevant, and Day has already admitted he looks forward to the NCAA being more like the NFL, where you can lose late in the year and still make the playoffs….that tells you a lot about his mindset vis a vis getting his a$$ handed to him two years running.
DON'T emphasize "the"...just say "Ohio State University" like everybody else.
