Having done several mountain safety courses over the years, one of the most important, if not the most important rules, is to know when to call it a day and retreat to safety, especially when your on your todd. Well done mate, you're an inspiration to us all.
My nephew is a volunteer with mountain rescue, I lose respect for people who take unnecessary risks. People like him then have to risk their own safety.
Something I learned with sailing that I think applies to this video ‘it’s much better to be at home wishing you were out there than to be out there wishing you were at home’. Great video Glenn you do the hard stuff!
That’s one of your best mate. It’s so important to show people it’s ok to leave it for another day. Well done and obviously pleased you’re safe and well.
Please don’t ever change your gentleness of your videos. They are literally healing me this year after my mothers death. Can’t wait to get back to my van on a working farm just below Blencathra. 6 weeks to go 💜
I’m sorry for your loss. This is exactly why I keep coming back to this channel too though. With so many outdoor TH-camrs trying to be HAAARDCORE, Glenn’s videos are just about going into the outdoors to enjoy the scenery and fresh air. He makes the kind of content I aspire to make.
@ Fully agree. So many want to over dramatise and make it loud. Glenn’s videos send me to sleep every night - but in a good way. Have to rewatch the 2nd half the next night. Best of luck with your venture. 👍
Well done for turning back, Glenn. You have just shown us how dangerous walking in the fells in bad conditions 😳 can be. It's a really good lesson to us all.
Blencathra was my first fell. I watched a video today and you were driving. I burst out crying as I know I’ll never see such a view again. It’s my husband’s 10 year memory next month and he was the driver. He adored driving over the passes too. I love your channel. It’s the next thing to being there. I love Finn too. 😊
You wouldn't believe how much you've made me feel better about myself after watching this video. I did Causey Pike from Braithwaite last weekend, it was seriously the hardest thing I've ever done, totally underestimated the snow. I know you still weren't 100% after being poorly, but OMG how hard is it walking in knee deep snow please???? I honestly thought my legs were going to give up on me. I felt every step you took on the video, like I was there again, only with my little legs and my weight to carry. But thank you, knowing I'm not the only one to struggle in that makes me feel heaps better 😊 Beautiful though wasn't it ❤
sensible decision to turn back, you turning back is a good example to everyone tempted to carry on when they shouldn't. I had flu over new year, didn't even have the strength to stand. Take a couple of weeks to recover properly, tire yourself out and you'll delay your recovery
Firstly, congrats on a well deserved 60k subscribers, clearly everyone loved last weeks scary adventures! Secondly, i did warn you about the infamous Mungrisdale common, super tough 🙂 I climbed it in February 1996 in very similar conditions, the snow was deep but the sun was bright all day. I plodded to the top and called it a day like you. I headed back down slowly and happened to glance back. In a field of white I saw a tiny blue dot, i had left my foam sit mat at the top of the slope! Yes, being the tight Yorkshire man I am, I tramped back up again to pick it up 🙂 Thanks for bringing back such amazing memories and well done on making the very sensible decision to turn back.
Great vlog Glenn. To know when to stop & turn back is a skill on its own. You clearly made the correct decision. The Fells will be there another day. Hopefully others will learn from your correct decision.
Well done for calling it a day, Glenn. We had to make the same call on the same day. We were aiming for Red Tarn via the Hole in the Wall and back down via Greenside Mine - a route we have done many times. After struggling in shin and in places, thigh- deep snow, after falling numerous times and having used lots of expletives, we turned around just before the final pull up to The Hole in the Wall and went back to the car at the cricket ground. We had the same issue with the spin drift filling footsteps etc. We met some folk who had come up the Greenside Mine path and said that is was worse over that side. The pub was a better option. 😂 At least we got some amazing views in the snow. ATB Brian and Jill 😊😊
Wow! A great video to show how winter conditions can turn a fairly benign route into a serious challenge. In better conditions, this is probably the best way to do the Wainwright most people put off doing. Another great vlog Glenn. Keep them coming 👌
I love that even though you're trudging through deep snow drifts, ill, and losing daylight, you still can't help but stop to notice the beauty around you 😍
Thanks for sharing another great adventure. Can't wait for part 2 ❤ On 6th of January I did your S2-Ep6 route to Branstree and Selside which 40% of was under knee-deep snow, 40% waist-deep snow and maybe for only 20% the snow layer was thinner. The fence on Gatescarth Pass was completely covered with snow. I wish I had snow shoes with me as spikes were useless. Nonetheless I've managed (very slowly) to finish the route, although all of the descend was in the dark. That was my most exhausting hike ever, but gave me new experience.
Best vlog for a while Glen… I walked the full Cumbria way starting on this day finishing on Thursday the same week … everything you experienced happened to me in the hardest 34 miles I’ve ever walked from Keswick to Carlisle… great content and snow at that depth makes you face the truth … it can quickly go wrong so you have to be alert to the dangers and know your limits … well done … one you won’t forget .. epic fails better than easy gains every day of the week 👏
A VERY good call. You were obviously spent and for your own safety getting off the fell was paramount. I've never done that route but several in Scottish winters have seen me waist deep and on my face in deep snow which is definately not funny at the time, but great to reminise about. Looking forward to Part II and hope you enjoyed your pie and a pint!!
I love my area the Lake District Cumbria, stunning 😍 anybody who lives there will remember the huge amounts of 7/8ft snow drifts in Feb 1996. Walking in it was hardwork, zapped of energy in no time. Gorgeous though ❄️❄️❄️
Turning back is never the wrong decision! My daughter, husband and I were walking up a mountain in the Adirondacks (New York State, US) It was summer, but it started to rain. The rocks got very slippery,. The rain was running down the path. It was like walking IN a stream and my daughter was quite cold. We were pushing on, maybe 15 minutes from the summit and passed another group coming down. One of the group hit a slick patch on a boulder and went down. He got back up, but the large boulders he fell on could have killed him. Needless to say, we saw the writing on the wall and turned around.
Good Grief what were you thinking? You could have been stuck up there? What did you carry in your backpack? Some kind of tent, sleeping back, etc.? Wow. Careful . Spring not TOOOOOO far away. We are all looking forward to some "spring" walks. Sit, relax and rest and BE SAFE!
Great decision to turn back- you’re a good example. Also, a fell walk isn’t a fell walk without a diva meltdown. I had one coming back from High Street via Harter Fell in horrible weather. You stop, have the meltdown, swear, get out the chocolate and then just keep going. Fab video and I always laugh when you say “back to the VAYAN.” Get well soon!
Wow. I watched a recent Cumbria Way walk probably filmed around the same time and I was amazed by the amount of snow currently in the Lake District - some of the high parts were inacessible. You could be in the Arctic .. or Canada! 🏔
Jeez, my heart was in my mouth for most of this Glenn. I kept saying to my hubby - that poor lads not well, he needs to be home in bed! You are a brave soul and well done for turning back. Hope you’re feeling better now 👍
I enjoy your Lake District hikes in the snow but, you were definitely correct to end the walk, the conditions, lack of daylight hours and the fact you had been extremely poorly only a few days earlier made that the right decision ! Like everyone always says there's always another day, but there's not another you. For the two days prior to New Years day I too was flattened by what I thought was just a common cold but must have been more, as I could barely get off the sofa, had nothing to eat for the two days, was trying to be sick but had nothing in my stomach. A fortnight later and I'm still only about 80%, it's taking some throwing off whatever it is ! So stay safe and best wishes, Tony.
I remember once going up onto high street and had the same thick snow there is no shame in coming down I went back a week later and it was clear and safe and enjoyed the more great video
Ah, mate, I'm just coming down with something nasty today and am listening to your videos whilst I work from home. I'm battling a sore throat, cough, aches, and pains. There's a lot going around at the moment 🤒!
Glen, I'm so glad that you turned back. I do think though that you know now that you should have called it off earlier ? You take care, a vlog isn't worth risking your life, you are worth so much more than that. You are no fool and thankfully live to climb another day..
I did Mumgrisdale.and Blencathra this way in May and I found it a real trudge to Mungrisdale without snow. Well done for calling it a day, safety first 👍
Such a stunningly beautiful Winter landscape! The hills and mountains are gorgeous! I’m alway impressed at your knowledge of these landscapes and their names. You did the right thing to call it a day..we all love you man. Cheers from Alabama, USA ! 🇺🇸 🥶
I tackled Skiddaw last week from Dodd forest, ascended to Ullock Pike but the deep drifts beat me, that snow did a good number as it came in from the north west. It wasn’t a wasted day, views going up were spectacular.
Beautiful picture postcard scenery but just shows how dangerous it can be in deep snow even for an experienced walker like you ,good decision to turn back
You're a very silly bunny ... please get better fully before going out to do a gruelling hike again. You won't lose any of us because you take time out to fully recover. We all think a lot of you, and though we love 'joining' you on these amazing hikes, none of us want to see you suffer and putting yourself into unnecessary danger. Take care and get well xx
Conditions were awful, you did the right thing by turning around. Some outstanding views but not worth loosing your life for. You made the right decision. We don't think ant less of you, you always deliver superb content. Thank you again Glenn. P.S. You're a tough cookie.
Beautiful views, good call on turning back, have done so many times myself, sometimes grudgingly, but always been a good call. It’s good for people to see you turn back, it sends a good message. Stay safe and enjoy.
oh mate I felt your pain, fighting against the snow and the light is draining and frightening :D you made the right choice to head back when you did. I only went out in the peaks with the snow and that was challenging enough for me at nothing like the depth you dealt with, but still ended up of course and fighting through deep snow. Glad you got back ok pal
@meTWO2323 I can't comment for Glenn but for me it would've been overkill to buy snowshoes just for my 1 snowy walk, it was only about a foot deep for the most part for me too, tiring but not the end of the world
Unbelievable those conditions. Every credit to you. If you had carried on we may have been hearing about it on the news. Those beautiful views beckon you on but you definitely did the right thing turning back. Could you imagine trying to get down in the dark. Blimey. Well done sir!
Thank goodness the sensible one won. Afraid as we age it takes longer to recover from these illnesses. Take your time we fans can wait until you are properly fit to take us on tour again . S
Did a lot of winter walking in me teens, my boarding school was hot on getting lads out at the weekend with compass and map and telling us we had three days to get back. But in the list on excellent winter walks was The Three Peaks of Yorkshire, Lyke Wake Walk, Snowdonia and Ben Nevis. The weekend walks at school was prep for the big walks I'm sure. This looks absolutely stunning in the snow
That was a brilliant video Glenn , amazing landscapes, the right decision to turn back. I had to laugh when you fell down and got stuck ! Then you were so enthusiastic about the clouds ect even when you were so tired. Keep up your fantastic walks , well done . Stay safe .
Well done turning back. Really shows that the mountains can be dangerous, and adverse factors can snowball (see what I did there?) into going south quickly.
God Glen, I had such nerves as you were coming down, that looked so hard. Well done, never been so relieved to get to an end of one of your videos ❤️ I need a whisky after watching that 😂😂
OMG Glenn, I admire your fortitude but boy did you call it right and turn back. Towards the end of the video you were almost apologising for turning back, there was no need, you did the right thing and showed others that turning back is the right thing to do rather than push on and end up having to call out mountain rescue. I've turned back on a few walks for various reasons and then returned a few weeks later and to repeat the intended walk and had a fantastic day. Blencathra will be there for another day and other days after that whereas you might not have been had your gung-ho head over-ruled your sensible head. BTW, thanks for the video, the stunning views, fantastic scenery and cloud formations - WOW! Roll on Blencathra next time and thanks once again. 👍😊
Good evening Glen You did the best thing leaving specially when you’re still feeling bit of it but what beautiful fantastic views looking forward to going back make sure you get lots of rest and get strong ok Glen looking forward to the next round two walk have good evening Glen 😊
That looked knackering. Me and a friend did the Mel's last year, just after having a virus and in the snow. Might as well have been doing Snowdon twice. I was absolutely done in.
You could have ended up on one of those missing vids...glad you turned back, it did start to look dangerous.. apart from that what beautiful views, look forward to part 2 when you are ready.
That made for a great video, because you showed that it doesn't always go to plan. A really important part is decision making and knowing when to quit, fair play because you definitely showed that. I've walked in Scotland where you sink 18" or more every step like that, the extra time and energy it saps from you, means you just have to scale back your plans in winter. If there's 2 or more of you, means you can take turns breaking ground because it's bloody knackering! If you're still not 100% it only makes it worse, get well soon. Health comes first.
Fantastic views that we saw today. Better that you did turn back. Hope the pie and beer did the trick! I am looking forward to the continuation… Thank you! - Gaylin, Ontario Canada
This cheered me up so much, and made me laugh so much... absolutely hilarious....🤣🤣🤣 When snow and nature fights you... 🤣🤣🤣 Black Crag you so lucky to live in the lake District and be able to climb and be with the fells and mountains so often This is my definition of heaven.... I need cheering up after being scammed out of £500. please be carful buying anything online. Anyway, get outside everyone and enjoy nature Life's for living not just existing... 😃
Glenn , you did well there , absolutely fantastic effort and wow !! Looks awesome especially when you looked back and took those photos... still watching it now. THANK YOU 👍👍👍
This was wonderful, Glenn. Mungrisdale Common looks so much more beautiful in those conditions than when I was last there and it was just a squelchy bog! Absolutely brutal though and you were right to head down.
Thanks Glenn for bringing us those incredible views - I am glad you chose to go back down your earlier tracks...sometimes it is braver to call it and to make the safer choice.
Incredible scenery and the light was perfect 👌 fabulous. You pushed yourself too much on such a snow day. Especially after not been well. I saw the tree, and it was a perfect shot. I'm just pleased you got back safe. Thank you for taking me along in your pocket ❤ Awsome hike. Stay safe my friend. No point putting yourself in danger. Go get pie and drink plenty of beer. 🍻🍻❤
Good call. I had to do that once, on Yewbarrow when we were too late starting and the light started going late afternoon. The only one that beat me... But I don't regret calling it.
We've driven for hours to do a walk and been beaten by the weather. The mountains will be there for you another day. It's a wise person who knows when to quit. This is one of our favourite routes to do Blencathra. The other, from Mungrisdale, following your way up to Bowscale and back via Scales Fell then follow the river back t'pub
Funny how things pan out, but changing plan made a bloody brilliant decision, can do that again another day! Snow looks lovely, but the depth made it nihg on impossible to walk in ,well safely anyway! This is good advice to people who don't know when to accept to turn back & get themselves & others in a precarious situation 😢🎉
What is it about Mungrisedale Common? I was up there with 2 experienced walkers in snow, in a white out, going round in circles and we thought that’s it, this is where it ends! Fortunately we eventually made it down - a forgettable but unforgettable fell.
When you're footprints disappeared was a bit like a hansel and gretel scenario only there's were breadcrumbs. Stunning scenery like the himalayas.Well done and thank goodness you got back safe.
A wise decision considering everything. Nothing is as important as your own health. Rest up till 100%. We all happy to wait and will still be here when you’re ready. Don’t push it as just not worth it at end of day
Awesome !! What an amazing video. Brave man! I’m new to your page, having stumbled across one of your videos last week. I’m now hooked, have subscribed and am look forward to seeing your next adventure. I am now contemplating a trip up to Cumbria later this year!!
You totally made the right decision. I think we’ve all had the dreaded virus this winter and know how tired it leaves you for a good 2 weeks after you get over the main symptoms. Stunning walk though, far more than I’d ever achieve in those conditions so well done. Impressive 🎉 I hope you followed it with a hot toddy x
You made the right decision. Be kind to yourself. Your followers no how fantastic you are. And you have actually taught another lesson to others that it's ok to turn back.. Those mountains are still going to be there.
Ive watched this again wow unbelievable just watch ya health thats more important than anything first time I'm in life im lost for words amzing get well soon
I feel your pain mate. Spent the week before last doing Wainwrights from our base in Borrowdale . Did Base Brown, Green Gable and Great Gable should have been nice 5-6 hour walk. Took us 9.5 hours in the snow. Knee deep snow is just exhausting isn’t it! I bet you never thought Mungrisdale Common would be your most memorable Northern fell of the series! It did look beautiful though. You definitely made the right call.
Loved this. Incredible views. Can't wait for part two 😊 (so relieved you did turn around so there can be a part two! Please always put your safety first. Thank you 😊)
Glad you made the right decision and turned back . I do often think that you never eat enough . I’m sure you would feel stronger on your walks if you kept fuelling . Enjoyed the vid and btw last week bought one of your hurdy pics . Very pleased with it 👍🤗
Fantastic footage really enjoyed it but glad you turned back sooner you be home safe for future uploads than risking that in them conditions. I be back up in the spring.
I have been up there in Deep snow like this and it was hard work, even my spaniel struggled, I do agree if it’s not safe then you best to turn back, looks absolutely beautiful!
Good call man. Defo a good call to go back down if you're feeling dodgy. I always take extra electrolytes and sweet stuff in case I bonk. Great videos, we want to see more so thanks for not going any further!!! 🙂
Having done several mountain safety courses over the years, one of the most important, if not the most important rules, is to know when to call it a day and retreat to safety, especially when your on your todd. Well done mate, you're an inspiration to us all.
I totally agree. It's better being safe than sorry. The mountains will always be there.

Great way of putting it and I totally agree 👍
Anyone else really like the map voiceover part?
My favourite part
That’s one of your best mate. It’s so important to show people it’s ok to leave it for another day. Well done and obviously pleased you’re safe and well.
The sound of spikes biting into the ice is a very satisfying sound.
Absolutely
Please don’t ever change your gentleness of your videos. They are literally healing me this year after my mothers death. Can’t wait to get back to my van on a working farm just below Blencathra. 6 weeks to go 💜

I love this channel. I was so ignorant about the geography of the Fells. It's stunning! Thank you for sharing your adventures.
Absolutely stunning views - thank you for sharing, though it was very risky. Glad you're okay.

@meTWO2323 I can't comment for Glenn but for me it would've been overkill to buy snowshoes just for my 1 snowy walk, it was only about a foot deep for the most part for me too, tiring but not the end of the world
Glad you are safe! Beautiful but deadly! Hope you are soon back to full health. Look forward to the next video, just love your stuff😊
Thanks
Great day to be out on skis - walking NO. I would have stayed at home so well done to get out. Thanks for the video. Geoff
Well done, never been so relieved to get to an end of one of your videos ❤️ I need a whisky after watching that 😂😂
Some drop dead gorgeous images in that Glen, and conveyed the realities of trudging through deep snow really well.
Great video Glen. Always best to make a sensible call and turn back. The mountains will still be there for another day. Great channel.
Good evening Glen
You did the best thing leaving specially when you’re still feeling bit of it but what beautiful fantastic views looking forward to going back make sure you get lots of rest and get strong ok Glen looking forward to the next round two walk have good evening Glen 😊
I am looking forward to the continuation…
Thank you!
Fantastic filming, Glen, the snow was absolutely beautiful that week 💙❄️❄️❄️
Glenn , you did well there , absolutely fantastic effort and wow !! Looks awesome especially when you looked back and took those photos... still watching it now.
THANK YOU 👍👍👍
This was wonderful, Glenn. Mungrisdale Common looks so much more beautiful in those conditions than when I was last there and it was just a squelchy bog! Absolutely brutal though and you were right to head down.
Thanks for sharing your endurance test. Great stuff
The right decision Glenn! Bailed out plenty of times myself.... always another day 👍
Thanks Glenn for bringing us those incredible views - I am glad you chose to go back down your earlier tracks...sometimes it is braver to call it and to make the safer choice.
Absolutely stunning! That kicked up a notch pretty quickly.
Even though you didn’t make it to the top because of weather and time, it was still an excellent video 😊 It’s always better to be safe than sorry 😊
Oh wow this looks crazy!! I’ll be watching this when I get home from work later today, hope you are having a great weekend so far!
I'm so glad you turned back when you did, I was starting to worry
Funny how things pan out, but changing plan made a bloody brilliant decision, can do that again another day! Snow looks lovely, but the depth made it nihg on impossible to walk in ,well safely anyway! This is good advice to people who don't know when to accept to turn back & get themselves & others in a precarious situation 😢🎉
What is it about Mungrisedale Common? I was up there with 2 experienced walkers in snow, in a white out, going round in circles and we thought that’s it, this is where it ends! Fortunately we eventually made it down - a forgettable but unforgettable fell.
Well done, as always Glenn. Best to be smart when out on them their hills. Thanks.
Glad you're ok
Ive watched this again wow unbelievable just watch ya health thats more important than anything first time I'm in life im lost for words amzing get well soon
I love your videos, so chill
😂😂 sorry I could not help myself laughing at you struggling through the snow. But appreciate it. Wow the clouds .... the scenery is magical!!!
I was so glad you called it day, so many reasons not to go….really not worth the risk to yourself….its always there for another day 😊
I feel your pain mate.
Very pleased with it 👍🤗
Would have loved to have been walking in such beautiful scenery in the snow every video you make is like stepping into a painting amazing
