  • VF-1, Wolfpack was established on 14 October 1972 at NAS Miramar, at the same time as VF-2, these units were the first operational fighter squadrons equipped with the Grumman F-14 Tomcat. VF-1 received the first F-14As on 1 July 1973.
    VF-1 was assigned to Carrier Air Wing 14 (CVW-14) aboard USS Enterprise. The first cruise came in September 1974. The end of the cruise saw the first Tomcat's combat debut, as VF-1 and VF-2 flew cover over Saigon for evacuation of US personnel in April 1975 as part of Operation Frequent Wind.

    Who needs low-visibility paint when you can just dazzle the enemy? Beautiful plane. What a time to be a naval aviator.

    Seeing Tomcats doing workups on Enterprise in the 70's must have been like watching F-35's conducting training evolutions on the Gerald R. Ford today. The Navy's newest fighter on their newest carrier.

    Pretty cool seeing the glove vanes peek out for a split second at 01:48

      They were problematic and welded shut eventually. D models never used them.

    One interesting thing to note about early F-14As is that they didn't have the walkways(the black squares) on both sides, only the left.

      Dangit. I just finished a model of this and put the walkway decals on both sides :(

      @@skipssmn3754 Oh no :( Man, hope you can somehow remove it without damaging the rest of the model. I'm too scared to touch a tomcat until I get my airbrushing in order.

      @@2ksnakenoodles I think i might have to leave it. It'll just be one of those things I point out before anyone notices lol. Tomcat is definitely difficult, the swing wings are a pain!

      @Skips SMN Oh yeah, that looks real difficult. Just got my 1/48 corsair, so think I'll do this and then consider a Tomcat!

    Your video is really good. I want to share this in Korea. If you don't mind, can I use this video? I will leave the source.

    It seems like the first Tomcat had her spoilers extended after touchdown. Does that mean that the pilot mispositioned the anti skid spoiler switch, or is that an older procedure?

    • @aidenbloom1487
      @aidenbloom1487 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Probably a procedure, maybe he was coming fast and the spoilers helped him slow down just a little more, for those spoilers to activate the throttle needs to be idle.

    • @cameron1975williams
      @cameron1975williams ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@aidenbloom1487 I think the throttle should be in Zone 5 as he touched down, not at idle. The spoiler brake switch should be off too, as far as I know.

      @@cameron1975williams I made this comment before I figured out the reasoning, so thank for responding. The spoilers are apart of the DLC system which is used to adjust the F14's glideslope to land on the carrier. The stick has a button on the side which activates the system (or in flight its used for the countermeasures). There is also a wheel your thumb rests near, if you roll up the wheel the spoilers popup and when you roll down the wheel the maneuvering flaps/slats will extend (when the DLC is activated).

      I think this was so early on that mistake got made. You didn’t go zone 5 on touch down just into early burner stages, as some as he got back to idle - he found out he went through his onshore checklist. Bet he felt dumb. 0 reason for arming spoilers on carrier deck. The DLC is only part of those spoilers the outboard ones should not pop out. That was a misplaced switch

    I don't see the low vis paint as an advantage over colors. If it is a survivability issue why do they paint up the CAGs and Skippers birds still? They fly sorties right along side everyone else?

  • @skipssmn3754

    Is it just me or is this tomcat painted in a lighter gray than most tomcats were painted in after?

    • @Orca19904
      @Orca19904 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      This shade was common on Tomcats and other naval aircraft in the 70's and early 80's. It wasn't until the mid-80's when so-called "low visibility" paint schemes started to be implemented that you saw the darker, more subdued shades of grey become more commonplace.
