    Photographs are the most challenging for me to purge. These ideas were very helpful.
    Before digital photo sharing was available we made duplicates for grandparents. Now that they have passed, the need has arisen to divide photos for each adult child to have for their own memories.

    Online shopping cart is my favorite. Most items go from the cart, to save for later and then delete.
    You’re right, those carts satisfy a very real need for me.
    Wish Dollar Tree had those carts in the store. Lol.

      RIGHT! I don't let myself get a cart or basket when I go in!!! If'I can't carry it.... I can't buy it! LOL I end up looking like a contortionist sometimes with that mindset..... as I approach the checkout with things balanced on my head! (just kidding... but you get the picture.) 😃😆🌻😉

    For a number of years, I worked in direct care in group homes and assisted living programs. We had a "go with the flow" work philosophy. You begin your shift where the last staff left off, clean up and complete a task, then moved to the next task. I realized this philosophy also works in my own home. When I clean up after myself as I go along and put things back where they belong, my space looks neat and tidy. I also know what I have and can see where it is. That makes me smile inside and reduces stress. I become more productive. I do my best to keep to this routine daily. I am not always successful, but I try.

    My husband has always had the philosophy that you make a room better than it was before you leave it, even if it is just folding a kitchen towel or tweaking the angle of the coffeemaker.. .. We have been married 50ish years... He is very good at it.. I tend to put blinders on when there is something else that I am doing.. but how he thinks is so beneficial and I do try.. My space is MY SPACE and he leaves me to it( avid stamper for over 25 years) .. His spaces are his and I leave him to them..We sold our home of over 40 years a couple years back.. I WAS the one that purged and purged.. he just brought everything with him.. that is who he is.. it is all( and I mean all.. every nut,bolt,scrap of wood) in his garage, sheds and he knows where everything is. I try to straighten things in the front of the house while I make my coffee.. we have made a new habit of not leaving anything in the sink before going to bed,.. so there usually isn't much to do. So I open the fridge and toss something out or straighten the "junk drawer" Being great grandparents during this quarantine has kept "kid" clutter to a minimum.. We are so blessed that our kids take good care of us.. OK... I'll stop rambling.. thanks for all the great tips!

    I have to share a story with you from when I was little. My brother and I would come home from school and dump our school bags in the living room. My brother would also take off his shoes and leave them on the floor too. My dad got tired of telling us, everyday, to pick up our stuff, so one day, he really got his message across! He took our book bags and my brother’s shoes, and put them in the tub in our bathroom. I went in, turned on the shower and then saw our things! I turned it off quickly and yelled for my brother! My dad came in laughing and said, “Maybe now you’ll put your things away!” I got the message really quickly after that! My brother was a bit more forgetful and ended up with his things in his bed, and other odd places until the message sunk in!!! Thank you for bringing back memories for me! 😊💕

    The maybe box is a great idea. We keep one that is filled over about three months and gone through before sending to donation. I do the same thing with a bag dedicated to clothing when I am clearing out my drawers or closet (the horror). I do the medicine cabinet every year around September when Scout season starts. My husband helps by decluttering his areas, and encouraging me to declutter mine, ha ha. He is very good about keeping his stuff corralled, donated, and trashed.

    My refrigerator used to be a black hole, but I established a routine to help keep it clean, fresh and organized. Monday is leftovers night, and whatever doesn't get eaten goes into the freezer, the compost, or the trash when I'm washing dishes; refuse collection is the next morning. On Tuesday I take just a few minutes to wash the refrigerator shelves while they're just about empty, make note of which items need to be replenished, and then make up the menu plan and shopping list for the next week. Needless to say, I shop every Wednesday and am able to store groceries in a nice, clean fridge. No duplicates jammed in the back, no problem finding room for everything, no forgotten items for which I must shop again during the week. Works for me!

    I have watched this video several times. Each time I say oh yeah that works.
    Especially the 7 day wait to shop. I was buying storage containers thinking they would work only to find out it wasn’t quite right or don’t fit in the space. Some I returned but some I had to give away.
    I’m taking 2 days off to get my dining room and bedroom decluttered. Then I’ll rearrange the bedroom furniture… again … to make it work better for my sleeping area and my office/sewing room. It’s a small room and I probably have too much furniture in there, but I’m determined to make it work.
    I love watching your videos and getting your tips and tricks for Decluttering and organizing my stuff. Hopefully I can send pictures soon. I need to take before pictures so “I” can see my progress.
    Thanks again!

    I don't have a junk drawer anymore! I went through it, put most of the stuff away, then took what was left and put it in a plastic shoebox and labeled it "What the . . . ?" When I need something that I can't figure out where I put, I start there. It holds things that I KNOW are important but don't know why. It has worked for about 5 years, so far. And it's great having that drawer be useable again! My husband insists I keep my larger countertop appliances in the pantry instead of on the kitchen counter. It's a real pain when I want my heavy KitchenAid mixer, but it does help keep the counter decluttered. Our biggest issues are receipts and photographs. I love the suggestion of grabbing a handful and sorting them! I will definitely use that one. As far as the receipts, I like the idea of putting them in a box, bin, ANYTHING other than the dining room table!!!!!! Urg! Thank you for all your videos. I think I'll have the husband watch this one, too.

      I keep my receipts in one box... and just go through them at tax time. If I need a receipt, I don't mind fishing through the top layer to find it.... and I always know where they are.

      @ziggiezag938 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      We sort the receipts by store. Any stores we don't shop at often goes into the misc. slot. This is very helpful because we tend to take things back a lot. Hmm, that seven day waiting period is a VERY good idea for us!

      You made me laugh out loud! Paperwork is the HARDEST!!!! We get so much of it - and have been told it's important forever! But, times have changed.... and only select paperwork is irreplaceable anymore.

  • @OrganizeCreateDecorate
    @OrganizeCreateDecorate 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Yay! I'm so happy you are getting back to work. I know you're happy about that.
    Mail is sorted right away. Payables: filed, paid, refiled. Junk mail shredded. View weekly ads then recyclable bin.
    I designed one wall of kitchen cabinets on the counter to house the toaster, coffee maker, and blender. There's still counter space for prep. Since cabinet doors are at counter height anything left there has to be moved so it doesn't happen often.
    The desk at our back door is our catch all. Though under it all it's very tidy,😄 we have a bad habit of placing things there instead of taking them out to the garage. That's today's job. While I'm out there, I'll break down boxes and place in largest box to wait for our county recycling center to open again.
    I do a version of your 7 day waiting period. For one, I rarely shopped even before COVID to avoid buying what I don't need. When I did, I'd put whatever in my cart. Before check out, anything that wasn't on my list was checked. It's surprising in that short time, how impulse items lost their "gottahave" label. Sometimes I do the, "if it's here next time I come then it's meant to be" thing too. Usually I forget once out the door.
    As for online shopping, I put things on a list along with the price and date. I keep track of price changes. When it's dropped enough or on lightening deal and it's something I need, or still want, I buy it.
    As for getting family members on board, when our children were home, I used a file card system. They each had their own color card for every day of the week, but Sunday. They knew it was homework, housework, before anything else. Period. Never a fight over who does what. If it's on your card. you did it on that day. A half hour before bed, was pick up time for anything out of place before they got ready for bed.

    • @TheCraftyOrganizer
      @TheCraftyOrganizer  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Amazing system! I love that! Sounds like you have your home completely dialed in! 💐

      @@TheCraftyOrganizer Thank you Norrine.
      Yes, and no. When we get heavy into a project, we were the contractors and are still working on finishing our home, things get very messy. I do find the best way to keep a house looking tidy every day is to give each member of the family daily tasks. That way no one assumes someone else will do it.
      As soon as our children crawled they learned to put their toys away. As soon as they walked they helped put dishes in the dishwasher. Everything went in the bottom rack, but when they were out of sight I moved it where it belonged. Not letting them see the changes, I didn't give them the idea that they did it wrong. I strongly believe in positive reinforcement. As they were old enough to understand, I taught them the proper way to do things.

    Ok, sooo.... My mom was the family photographer and genealogist... And we have a BIG family. There are about 26 grandkids and LOTS of good times captured. And I inherited the job of storing, keeping, tracking, recording! (This is why Hubby and I just invested in creating an office for me, lol)
    After cleaning out my parents' home, EVERY picture, framed, albumed, or loose, got put in boxes of every size and toted to my house. Wow.
    Maybe even as much as 10,000 photos.
    I bought some shoebox sized plastic containers and marked them by DECADE, beginning in the 1800's and ending the year my parents passed away. Any LOOSE photo could be tossed directly into a decade box (so much easier than quickly identifying individual years).
    Tonight, I had one of my teen daughters sort through ONE decade and find the ones with actual dates and make piles of YEARS. I also made a pile for UNdated pictures for me to figure out.
    The plan is to sort them chronologically, then scan and put Mom's collection on a flash drive. I would like to print nice photo books and get rid of the older, bulky albums. I will save the important originals in some classy albums my mom had on hand, toss duplicates, and place the minor photos, chronologically, in a file box and place in closet.
    The younger generation seems to prefer digital, so I'm not going to kill myself making up 100 albums and hog up all my space. Each family member can have a flash drive of all family photos. I would suggest, as time permits, to collect photos of particular people to be used on their special occasions ... Weddings, graduations, funeral... to make it easier to gather later.
    I have to coach myself through this some days, lol, but my new office is working beautifully for this set of challenges.

      @TheCraftyOrganizer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It sounds like you have the perfect system to handle this huge project!!!! I would have done it much the same way! And, I agree. Digital is the way to go. I have a video coming out today with my family photos. I have so many that are from the early 30's and 40's. No date. No Name. No idea who the people are. I'm going to donate them, as I know vintage pictures are useful with art and crafting. At least these images will still go to something wonderful.

    • @suzum.9713
      @suzum.9713 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheCraftyOrganizer That's awesome! My mom has a city history collection that I would like to donate to someone who would appreciate it more than I do. A lot of the clippings were kept in gorgeous burgundy albums that I choose to repurpose for the SPECIAL family photos from both sides of my family and dating back into the 1800's. (I couldn't bear to have them used for city photos when they looked so classy!)
      Then, Mom had a box of unidentified photos of strangers that she had already labeled 'take to genealogy club', so THAT'S at least easy to dispose of.
      She had another box from a neighborhood auction. I created a Facebook page and uploaded those photos in the hopes someone will recognize them and I can pass them along.

    Oh, boy. #12 really hit home. My spouse is the messiest person I've ever known. The problem is, I can't organize his piles of 'stuff' that accumulate everywhere because often I'm not sure which item he needs to keep or toss. Believe me, we've had many of 'those' conversations to no avail.
    I've decided to sort through his stuff and get rid of the things I am sure can be tossed (or donated) then fill a box with the remaining items for him to go through with a deadline. After the deadline, whatever is in that box GOES. Unfortunately, there is a lot of resentment while I'm tidying up his things because I feel I shouldn't have to do this and my time could be better spent doing other things. But after 19 years, I've reached my limit.

      My advice is to not touch his things. Put them in a dated/labeled box like Fairy suggests, but do not dispose of them. I speak from experience. When I was at a retreat, my hubby threw out a big black trash bag that I stored in our master bedroom closet. He said he thought it was 'garbage' since it was there for so long. What I had not told him was that it was full of the gorgeous gold-colored silk drapes I inherited from my wealthy grandmother. They were floor-to-ceiling length beautiful (and expensive) golden drapes. I was planning to use that gold fabric when I retired and sew it into one of my crazy quilts. THat incident broke my heart because I was sentimentally attached. The one thing of my grandmother's that I still had. I still am not over the hurt that he caused me that time. But I learned my lesson. I communicate to him what he should not touch and why he should not touch it.

    I have implemented several of the suggestions you mentioned a few years back. As far as my family's clothing . . . hubby is 6'8" and 2 sons are similar. Clothing and shoes are large and tall size. They would put their winter coats and boots on the backs of chairs or in front of doors. It was always a tripping hazard. I would remind them to put away their items. This was becoming a problem. Finally, I had to let them know nicely that if I found their clothes, boots, shoes laying around where one could trip over them, that I would throw them outside in the snow. I guess they didn't believe me. Out they went. I'm happy to report that I finally got my point across. After that they put away their items. As far as junk drawers are concerned, my hubby was commandeering my kitchen drawers one by one. Many of the drawers broke due to the weight of the items, such as hammers, screw drivers, nails, screws, wrenches, etc. I removed everything that did not belong in the kitchen. Filled 3 boxes. Now if I could only get my sons to take their stuff [clothing, furniture, old computers, tires, vehicles] to their homes!!! Sigh . . .

      @@TheCraftyOrganizer We both have maintenance backgrounds. We both appreciate quality tools and tough, strong, quality cabinets for our tools. In fact, his follow colleagues were envious of his tool storage cabinets and were surprised that he had them because their wives wouldn't let them have the "quality" storage units. So my husband has tons of storage units, tools, and garages that many men would drool over but he's not good about returning his tools to their proper place. I may throw clothes out into the snow, but never tools. I put them in boxes next to the door so that the next time he goes out to the garage, I remind him to take the boxes. It's not likely to ever change. Btw, I enjoy your episodes on TH-cam. I'm always learning something new. Thank you.

    I really like the Maybe Box and the 7 Day Hold. I shop online and I put things in my wish basket or whatever site has, then I want to go back a week later to see if I still want it. Usually its only a day or two. I do compare items when the websites allow that. I find that helpful, because most times, I end up getting nothing. I am going to try the 5 minute timer for all areas and see how I go. See what works best for me. From watching your videos, I have now thought about how to have the decluttered look in all rooms, especially the kitchen. We have this space from under the sink bench which takes up 70% of that wall length. We have put small pieces of furniture that fit under there to store our cleaning items, sponges, etc, like you would normally under the sink, but its all open.
