Mr. Weismuller taught my dad to swim competitively at the local YMCA in Milwaukee. My dad thought a lot of him, and won a fair number of metals himself, including a second place finish in a distance swim in the St. Lawrence River. We never missed any of those Tarzan movies by the way.
I grew up watching all his movies. I miss him. There is only one Tarzan for me. Johnny Weissmuller. His yell was perfection. Jungle Jim series was great as well.
Johnny Weissmuller's diet consisted of: 1 dozen eggs, 1 pound of bacon, and a loaf of bread (probably buttered), at each meal if I remember correctly. I did the research at the library 40+ years ago. Makes sense since Olympic swimmers today admit to eating 8000 to 12000 calories per day. KELLOGG, the breakfast cereal people, probably changed Weissmuller's diet to milk and breakfast cereal. That was my diet when I was a competitive swimmer, and it only made me weaker and weaker. I can only imagine what my swimming career could have been had I eaten eggs and bacon instead.
My aunt and uncle bought Johnny Weissmuller’s home in Brentwood, Calif in the late 1940’s. The pool? Everyone asked if it was Olympic size. It was huge but no it wasn’t. The shallow end was 5’ deep and the deepest part was 15 ft deep. It had soft lime green tiling and it was the most gorgeous green water I’ve ever seen in a pool. My brother and I sold it and the neighbors behind us bought it and now it’s just a yard without a pool 😢. Unless of course they have a pool in their closest back yard. But I’d bet it wasn’t like that one!
I met Mr. Weissmuller home in Titusville Florida in 1970 delivered a freezer to him. He was very gracious and nice to talk to.
😊😊

I grew up watching Tarzan. Johnny was absolutely the best! My oldest brother would play Tarzan in the 50’s and 60’s! Rest in Peace. Barry
